Good Breeding
For Healthy Foals
We are approaching the optimum equine breeding season, and pleasure horse owners who have decided that they would like to breed their mares should be familiar with the practices surrounding a successful breeding program.
The mare has an estrous cycle that averages approximately 21
days. Included in this cycle is an average six-day period of standing heat or true estrus. Generally, the mare ovulates 24 to 48 hours before the end of standing heat. The mare has three periods or phases of reproductive tract activity. The year can be divided into the so-called dormant

period (August to December), the transition period (December to March), and the true breeding season (March to August). The period of greatest reproductive efficiency is the true breeding season. Mares may have cycles throughout the year, but most cycle with more consistency in the true breeding season.
If a mare has a 21 -day cycle and is in standing heat for a period of six days, she should be covered by the stallion on day 3 and 5. It is necessary that she be covered before ovulation because very few mares conceive when covered after ovulation.
In preparing for the breeding season, each mare should be given individual attention. Maiden mares (mares never before bred) should be examined for breeding soundness by a veterinarian prior to the breeding season. This examination should include a general physical, checking the reproductive tract and the mammary gland.
The barren mare (open the previous year) should be examined by your veterinarian for breeding soundness and treated if need be prior to the breeding season to prevent loss of valuable time during the true breeding season.
Foaling mares should be examined about the seventh day post parturient (just before foal heat or so-called 9-day heat) in order to determine the advisability of breeding on foal heat. In general, foal heat breeding should be very selective because of the statistically poor results (in terms of conception and a successful gestation).
A good record of reproductive activity is a valuable aid to the

The Spring Farmland Edition of
the Farmers and Consumers
Market Bulletin will be published
March 20. All land notices for this
edition must be received in the
Bulletin office by March 8.
In recent farmland editions of the
F & C Market Bulletin, the editors
have noted a growing tendency for a
few of our advertisers to misuse these
columns and the purpose for which
they are intended.
As a result, we are making extra
efforts to check and strengthen the
enforcement of the rules and
regulations governing these land
notices.

Many of Georgia's top-ranking officials participated in the joint session of the General Assembly February 14, which was called for the Georgia Department of Agriculture's 100th birthday. Those participating were, left to right, Dorsey Matthews, Chairman, House Agriculture Committee; Sam McGill, Chairman, Senate Agriculture Committee; Tommy Irvin, Commissioner, Georgia Department of Agriculture; Jimmy Carter, Governor; Tom Linder, former commissioner, Georgia Department of Agriculture; and Lester M add ox, Lieutenant'Governor.

vertise his privately owned land for sale, rent or exchange.
New Accuracy Test
For LP Gas Dealers
A second mobile unit to test the accuracy of measuring meters used by LP gas dealers has just been put in service by the Fuel and Measurements Division of the Department of Agriculture, Commissioner Tommy Irvin announced.
With the new unit now in operation, the state has been divided into two districts, running from the

Rules for the 1974 Moneymaker Cotton Club have been announced by the University of Georgia Cooperative Extension Service.
"Any Georgia producer with a yield of at least 750 pounds of lint per acre planted solid, or 1,000 pounds planted skip-row, is eligible," said Charles Roland.
For additional information, contact your county agent.
In times past we have allowed realtors to advertise if they assured us that the land advertised was owned privately by them and not by a client. Regrettably, some have taken advantage of this opportunity. Therefore, in the coming land issue, realtors will NOT be allowed to advertise at all. In addition, we feel these people do have other outlets available to them for selling their land not generally accessable to the individual farmer. Therefore this should not work a particular hard-

Nitrogen Fertilization

half of the state during the peak
tobacco season, and in the northern
counties during their busy months. Each will also serve as a "back-up" unit for the other when convenient.
Department inspectors will now be able to check dealers at least once in nine months, whereas with one unit, inspections were possible about every 20 months.
We have had reports from growers throughout the state that at least one com-
pany is promoting the use of nitrogen fertilizer for soybeans. This information
is in direct conflict with data obtained by the College of Agriculture, University
of Georgia.
Numerous research experiments
throughout the Southeast and Mid-
west have shown that nitrogen fer-

Tabulation has been made for the recent referendums concerning the continuation of the agricultural commodity commissions for milk, eggs and sweet potatoes. Producers of these commodities voted overwhelmingly to continue these commission programs for another threeyear period. Milk passed with a 92% favorable vote, eggs - 83% and sweet

The data below illustrates the response of soybeans to nitrogen fertilizer in a typical Georgia test.

Dear Editor:
Enclosed is a picture of Glenn, age 4, Kyle, age 6, and Sheri, age 10, and their crop of pumpkins and squash.
Glenn prepared the ground by building a nice warm fire last January in our 60 year old barn.
Kyle and I planted the seeds and then ran for cover. It's a good thing we did for those vines sprouted so fast and covered the whole area in no time.
The weeds didn't stand a chance and Sheri kept up with the watering. We etched their names in the pumpkins and squash while they were still small and then watched them grow.
Kyles' pumpkin weighted 105 1/2 pounds and took first place at the Coosa Valley Fair. Sheri's squash weighed 26 pounds and took first place and Glenn entered a Sugar Baby watermelon for his pumpkin deflated before the fair.

THE MARKET BULLETIN
Wednesday, February 27, 1974
Land Edition
Tea is the name applied to an evergreen shrub or small tree of whose leaves the drink tea is made. The tea plant is native to China and India and also grown in Japan, southeastern Asia and Africa.
Although Thea sinensis is closely related to Camellias and magnolias, it will not grow in Georgia. Horticulturists say that the humidity is too high here and that the plant is "super-sensitive" to cold temperatures and frost. If the tea plant is allowed to go unpruned, it will reach a great height and produce blossoms like its relative the magnolia. It must however be kept small and pruned constantly as it is the young tender leaves which are picked to make tea.
Tea leaves were used to flavor boiled water as early as the 6th century in Asia. Europeans did not enjoy the beverage until the 17th century. Along with other Old World customs and tastes, tea was brought to the colonies as early as the first ship arrived on the eastern seaboard of America.
After the uproar caused by the "tea-tax" and the resulting Boston Tea Party, it was considered unAmerican to enjoy a cup of tea. Substitutes from native roots and barks were devised.
There are two tea customs, however, which are distinctly American. First, iced tea was first made at the St. Louis fair in 1904 when a vendor became distressed that patrons were not drinking his steaming cups of brew in the middle of the summer; and second, Americans are responsible for the invention of the disposable tea bag.

examining veterinarian and a major factor in the successful breeding of the mare. This is especially beneficial if you have recorded the following: days of standing heat; days out of heat; how heat was detected and by whom-; history of previous foaling; health of the foal; health of the mare and to which stallion she was bred; condition of the placenta (over three hours is considered retained); weight of placenta at time it was shed; and evidence of infection, vaginal discharge, or any observable tear in the reproductive tract.
Elaborate record books are available commercially, but an ordinary notebook serves the purpose. The important thing is its availability and completeness in details.
With some plans on your part and close observation and occasional help from your veterinarian, breeding horses for healthy foals should prove to be a profitable enterprise as well as an enjoyable experience.

HARD-COOKED EGGS
The green discoloration that sometimes appears between the white and yoke of hard-cooked eggs is harmless. It is simply the result of a chemical reaction between the sulphur in the white and iron in the yoke.
Dolan E. Brown Jr. of Twin City, Ga., has been named to the 20-man Cotton Board which administers the national research and promotion program for upland cotton.
Named as alternate was John H. Harris of Cordele. They will serve through Dec. 31, 1976.
