Rural Fire
Defense Program
The growth of the industrial type community, and its ever changing populace along with the farmmachine age, has resulted in a community change that sees an expansion of urban communities.
To meet this change, the Georgia Forestry Commission,
in cooperation with county and city governments developed a Rural Fire Defense Program in 1968.
This program is under the provisions of the Georgia Emergency and Disaster Plan. The Forestry Commission is assigned the task of providing a means of fire defense in forest and rural areas. In those areas where the Forestry Commission operates and local services do not

have the^capability of answering calls outside corporate limits, the suppression of all fires, in these rural areas, becomes a part of the Forestry Commission's responsibility.
Through the Rural Fire Defense Program, communities, unprotected by organized fire departments, have an opportunity to provide an initial fire suppression service. Established fire departments can reinforce present equipment which will enable them to increase their rural services.
This is accomplished through the loaning of state and federal government excess equipment which includes a truck and water tank. The departments man, equip and maintain the equipment in readiness for service.
Cooperatively, the program objective is to minimize the loss of life and property as a result of uncontrolled fire in rural areas.
The volunteer rural fire control groups make the Forestry Commission's woods fire suppression efforts more effective by relieving them of the many calls to building residence, grass and debris fires.
In 1973-74 Fiscal year RFD personnel suppressed or assisted in the suppression of 2,828 fires. There were 1,525 fires involving structures

Meat Processing

The Georgia Department of

Agriculture has changed the policy

for "HOME USE ONLY" meat. This

was done to prevent uninspected

meat from entering the retail trade.

Under previous guidelines, a retail

market could obtain permission to

process uninspected meat for a con-

sumer as long as that meat was retur-

venience to the consumer but has recently resulted in uninspected meat being sold to the public.

The new policy requires all meat

Number One Nut
Peanuts rank number one among cash crops in Georgia and have led all other crops in dollar value since 1965.

Timber Survey
Shows Residue
A survey conducted by the Georgia Cooperative Extension Service shows that almost 25 per cent of the merchantable volume of wood from Georgia's forest was either left in the woods as residue or removed by land clearing, urban development and other land use change activities

Meat Production
Georgia's red meat production in commercial plants during October totaled 39.9 million pounds, according to the Georgia Crop Repor-
ting Service. This is 22 percent above the 32.7 million pounds
produced during the same month last year and 16 percent above the 34.5 million pounds for September 1974.
Commercial plants in Georgia reported 41,500 head of cattle slaughtered during October 1974 7,000 more than last month and

as rye, oats, ryegrass and clovers are
often grazed with a great degree of inefficiency. Take a look at the nutritional value of a typical winter annual pasture. Protein content is about 20% and total digestible nutrition content about 70%. This means that the amount of protein in winter grazing is equal to 20% protein range cubes and the amount of digestible energy in winter grazing is equal to ear corn.
Winter grazing can usually be used more efficiently by limiting the
amount cattle are permitted to consume. On farms where winter grazing

where the timber was not utilized.

Wkal 9 Satiety?
Ancient Greeks called this plant
isope and it has been thought by
Biblical scholars that savory was actually referred to in the Old
Testament rather than hyssop.
In any case, savory is an old herb
long appreciated for its culinary
and medicinal value. A native of the
Mediterranean, savory was carried
to England with the Norman
conquerors. It was widely used in
sausages, stews and beans, hence
the common name "bean herb"
evolved.
There are two varieties of savory
widely grown: summer savory
which is an annual and winter
savory, a perennial. Summer savory
grows upright-to 18 inches with
narrow, aromatic dark green leaves.
Winter savory on the other hand
is more low-growing with narrow to
roundish leaves. Savory' has a pleasant peppery
flavor and adds a spiciness to
beans and other foods. Medicinally,
it has been claimed that savory
leaves applied to bee stings will
relieve pain and itching.

Winter Grazing
(Continued From Page 1)
is in short supply, it may be most profitable to use the crop only as a protein supplement.
One should consider that the daily protein needs of cattle range from approximately .75 to 1.50 pounds per day, depending on animal size, growth rate desired and production cycle. Cattle will consume about 2 pounds of dry matter per hundred pounds of body weight.
For example, if a 1,000 pound dry cow is permitted free access to winter grazing, it will consume 20 pounds of forage (dry matter) thus will receive 4.0 pounds of protein, more than twice the amount needed. The forage may be more efficiently used if the cattle are permitted to consume only enough forage to supply their protein needs. Other feeds, such as hay, silage or grains in some instances may be used to supply the additional nutritional requirements. In situations where it is not practical to move cattle on and off winter grazing, the use of stalk fields, harvested crop residue and hay offered free choice to cattle will limit the consumption of winter grazing crops.
A good winter annual grazing crop is capable of producing 600800 pounds of protein and over 2,000 pounds of digestible energy per acre. This is equivalent in feed value to 1.5 tons of range cubes (20% protein equivalent) and 50 bushels of corn (energy equivalent).
To reap this harvest, annual winter grazing should be carefully managed. Do not abuse plants by overgrazing. Split application of nitrogen to provide a more uniform plant growth and to stimulate more growth as needed. Limit grazing to efficiently provide daily nutritional needs of cattle.
Temporary winter grazing crops are costly to establish and maintain. Thus efficient utilization is the key to win income over cost.

Fire Defense
(Continued From Page 1)
and equipment. The efforts of the RFD volunteers resulted in the saving of property valued at more than $10.9 million. RFD and Forestry Commission personnel combined their efforts on 1,203 wildfires.
At the end of October 1974 there were 291 departments active in 127 counties. The volunteer rural fire control groups have 366 pieces of equipment on loan from the Forestry Commission's and federal governments' excess property.

The Forestry Commission makes available a field and brush fire training course. The course is designed to familiarize the trainees with the program responsibilities, and acquaint them with the Forestry Commission's forest protection organization and the fundamentals of rural fire suppression.
The Georgia Forestry Com mission has the challenge of maintaining and furthering its forest fire protection organization in keeping with the value of timberland and throughout Georgia. As timber values increase and fire risks rise, we must work together to provide a fire protection network that adequately serves both rural and urban Georgia.

Raceway System
(Continued From Page 1)
over to an 18-inch aeration-drop to the next segment. Once the water passes through all eight segments it is returned to the pond.
Originally the system was set up to study catfish production, but it was only possible to use the facility from March to October because catfish don't grow in cold water. In 1971 the system became a two-crop system with the introduction of rainbow trout during the winter months. Rainbow trout thrive in water temperatures below 70 degrees Fahrenheit.
One very important part of this fish production project is monitoring water quality, since a buildup of waste materials can kill the fish. The man responsible for this mission is Dr. J. L. Chesness, professor of agricultural engineering at the College Experiment Station in Athens.
At the upper end of the raceway
it takes 1.16 pounds of food to produce each pound of fish, but at the lower end of the raceway where waste materials are numerous and water is dirtier (segments seven and eight), it takes 1.3 pounds of food for every pound of fish.
This indicates that the growth rate at the lower end is not as good as it is at the upper end since growth is shown by the lower feed conversion rate.
Dr. E. Evan Brown, Chesness' research colleague and an ag economist, sees the higher stocking rates as a definite benefit to South Georgia farmers now engaged in fish production. "I regard fish production as a supplementary enterprise," he said. "Those individuals involved in production could double or triple their incomes."
Although Dr. Brown is optimistic for the Georgia farmer, he cautioned against expecting any kind of boom for the state's economy.
In Tifton, Dr. T. K. Hill, the principal leader of the raceway project, described another benefit of the higher stocking rates. "We can raise more fish in a smaller area. This is especially important with today's high costs of real estate," he said. He estimated that in a year about 5300 pounds of fish per acre can be raised at Tifton's raceway system, which covers approximately six acres.
The raceway idea is apparently catching on around the state. "I would guess that about 60 people in middle and south Georgia are raising catfish and trout in raceway systems. Some of these people have been successful.
