Energy Crisis

Challenges Youth

The youth of my generation hardly

know the meaning of the proverb "A

penny saved is a penny earned"

because we have grown up in an af-

fluent American society where our

parents have been ablesto provide us

with many of the luxuries of life,

The energy crisis is forcing us

to alter

ife style in order

to conserve

energy. We are

learning that

energy saved is

money saved. We

are learning, ma-

ny of us for the

first time, that

we can get al-

ong on a little

less.

To me the energy crisis is a

challenge to the manhood, the

patriotism, and the commitment of

youth. I have faith in youth and know that we will respond willingly and cheerfully to the challenge. In fact, responses were evident during the Christmas season when our Christmas trees had homemade decorations instead of lights, when we entertained our friends at home, and when we drove at slower speeds.
Some suggestions for saving energy and for youth to meet the challenge of the energy crisis are:
1. Keep the heat of your homes at sweater temperatures.
2. Make windows and doors as air tight as possible.
3. Replace high watt bulbs with lower watt bulbs.
4. Turn off all lights when not in use.
5. Take showers instead of baths. A bath requires about 36 gallons of water, a shower about 10 gallons.
6. Use a basin instead of a shower for shampooing your hair. The shower uses three times as much hot water.
7. Turn off the water while shaving. In addition to steaming up the mirror, an unnecessary amount of water runs down the drain.
8. Stopper your sink or use a dishpan for washing dishes. A running water wash or rinse uses about 30 gallons of water per meal.
9. Check household faucets. A slow drip at one faucet wastes 15 gallons of water per day.
10. Wait for a full load of dishes before running the dish washer.
11. Wait for a full load of clothes before running the washing

Garbage Feeding

Violator Fined

The gross value of Georgia's major crops, including price support payments totaled $940 million in 1973, according to the Georgia Crop Reporting Service. This surpassed the previous record-high value, set just last year, by $254.5 million or 37 percent. Major contributors to the in-
crease were substantial acreage increases for corn and soybeans. Corn was the highest value crop for 1973, followed closely by peanuts.
Cotton ranked third and soybeans came in fourth. Tobacco dropped from the third most valuable crop last year to fifth place this year due to excessive moisture problems which cut the yield substantially. All major
crops, except tobacco, recorded an increase in value. Of the five leading sources of crop value, soybeans had the largest per-
centage increase in value from a year ago with a jump of 183 percent or $79 million.

In the State Court of Lowndes County last Thursday, Jan. 24, a violator of the state's garbage feeding law and dead animal disposal law was sentenced to two years in prison.
However, Judge Arthur McLane probated the sentence with the following provisions:
Burke James, convicted of garbage feeding to hogs and of improperly disposing of dead hogs, must pay court costs on both violations; cease feeding of garbage immediately and properly dispose of all dead animals on his farm; begin feeding commercial feed or grain immediately for a period of 30 days.
After a period of 30 days of
proper feeding, James was ordered to sell or dispose of all of his hogs with the inspection and approval of the Georgia Department of Agriculture. Judge McLane stated that James must "get out of the hog business."
If these provisions are not adhered to, McLane said, James will be required to serve one year sentences on each count in the state institution.
The Lowndes County conviction was the fourth for feeding of garbage to swine in recent months.
The Georgia Department of Agriculture has recently cracked down on all garbage feeding as this is one of the primary causes of hog cholera. The state has now been free of cholera for over a year and officials are anxious to maintain this record as cholera has cost Georgia farmers millions of dollars in losses in recent years.

Warm Weather Capital Gains From Timber Sales

Can Damage Rye
Rye that is beginning to head due to the unusual warm weather should be clipped with a rotary mower in hopes that some cold weather will slow down the growth, according to Dr. W. H. Gurley, Extension Agronomist.
In a letter to all county agents, Dr. Gurly said that due to the untimely warm spell in Georgia, a lot of rye is beginning to head and it is almost certain that these heads will not make it through the cold weather that we will probably have.
"Earlier planted wheat will be in the same condition if warm weather continues," Gurley said. "We would recommend the same treatment for wheat if it has started heading".
Nitrogen applications should be delayed until the cold weather is over as nitrogen stimulates growth which could increase cold weather damage.
Pesticide Exams
The examination for licensed pesticide operator will be offered February 25 at the Agriculture Building, Atlanta, and at the Rural Development Center, ABAC, Tifton.
To reserve a place for either examination, call 404/656-4958,

Provide Incentive For Investment

Legislation permitting the income from timber sales to.be treated as long-term capital gains provided an incentive for many landowners to invest in timberlands. This has resulted in an increase in our nation's timber supplies and an improvement in the economies of many of our communities.

Leaf Growers Meet
A meeting of Georgia tobacco growers will be held Saturday, February 9, at 10 AM in the Rural Development Center at Tifton. All tobacco growers, agricultural leaders and others interested in the tobacco situation are urged to attend this meeting to discuss increased allotments.
9th Steeplechase
Set For March 16
Saturday, March 16, 1974, is the date selected for the ninth running of the Atlanta Steeplechase, a race attracting top thoroughbred horses.
The Atlanta Steeplechase is run for the benefit of Multiple Sclerosis, Atlanta Chapter. Anyone wishing tickets should contact: Multiple Sclerosis Headquarters, 1776 Peachtree Road, N.W., Atlanta 30309.

Net taxable income can be substantially reduced through the provisions of long-term capital gains. To obtain the benefits of these provisions, however, landowners must be sure their timber sales meet certain conditions. If these conditions are not met, then the income from sales may be classed as ordinary rather than as capital gains.
Capital gain treatments on timber sales are possible under the following methods:
1. Outright, or "lump-sum" sale of standing timber
2. Disposal of standing timber with an economic interest retained
3. Cutting of timber with election to treat as a sale.
The first method pertains to a sale in which standing timber is sold for a fixed amount agreed upon in advance. The sale may cover all of the timber or only a portion of it, such as marked trees or certain species. Many owners of small acreages of

Dear Editor:

I ran a notice in your "wanted" column recently for a specific item and received a package containing goods that I did not want. This person did not ask me if I wanted what she had to sell, she just sent it. My question is this do I have to pay for it or can I return it to her postage C.O.D.?
Name withheld by request

(Editor's note: You certainly have no obligation to accept any such package and are certainly within your rights to return it postage C.O.D. In fact, if you do not open any unsolicited package, you are not required to pay for it even if it remains
in- your house indefinitely.

READERS Always inquire before you go to the expense and trouble of sending someone something you think they might like. Chances are they will be interested in what you have to sell, but you can save yourself a lot of trouble by querying the
party first.)

Dear Editor:

You recently had a piece in the MARKET BULLETIN on sassafras but you didn't mention "white sassafras" which is real bitter. I remember getting hold of the wrong sassafras when I was a boy in Madison County and it certainly has a terrible taste. I'd be interested in finding some
more just for curiosity. Mr. L. H. Williams 217 E. Hancock Street Decatur, Georgia 30030

Witch-hazel is a small tree in the south, a shrub elsewhere in the country. Its leaves are wavymargined; the flowers are a cluster of long narrow yellow petals appearing in autumn; and the shiny black seeds pop from capsules, often flying through ,the air several yards. These characteristics make witch-hazel one of the most unusual of our native woody plants.
Witch-hazel is an old-time remedy for skin irritations and inflamed eyes. The Indians first made a poultice from the inner bark of the tree but we now use an alcoholic extract prepared for the same purpose.
The forked stick of a "water diviner" was probably made of witch-hazel. The popular name of the plant came from the divining fork's reputation of being able to locate precious metals in the soil and to discover springs of water by dipping forward suddenly when properly balanced between the thumb and fingers of a gifted "water diviner".
The unique quality of locating water by this means has eluded science as all claim that "there is no possible connection between the antics of a witch-hazel or any other kind of fork and the presence of subterranean springs".
Nevertheless, there are still those who believe that somewhere there is a Witch named Hazel who directs particularly gifted people to fresh water. Certainly a pinetree divining fork would be of little use to anyone seeking an underground spring.

machine. Use cold water detergents for your wash. 12. Cook several meals in the oven at once. Thaw frozen foods first to shorten cooking time. 13. Observe reduced highway speeds when driving. Never carry gasoline in your car. 14. Car-pool to go to school, to date, to shop, and to visit. Eliminate unnecessary trips. 15. Ride school bus and public transportation. Perhaps our era of super abundance is at an end. Our sources indicate that jimsonweed is a widely naturalized weed in North America but native to the tropics. It does not survive the winter here. It has lobed oaklike leaves, 8 inches long and erect white or violet trumpet-shaped flowers 4 inches long, with two inch long, prickly seeds. The leaves, roots and seeds of the plant are poisonous and very illsmelling when crushed. It is easily propagated by seeds, but the plant should be weeded out and destro*ye*d *wherever it appears.

timber sell by this method and are generally safe in assuming their sales will qualify for capital gains. Some problems may arise, however, if the landowner makes frequent sales, or sales'involving substantial amounts, under this method.
Landowners who make frequent or large sales would be wise to seek the advice of a tax consultant prior to selling. Otherwise, they could be faced with the prospect of being taxed at ordinary rates.
The second method, "disposal
with an economic interest retained," occurs under a so-called pay-as-cut contract in which payment is based on a stated amount per unit harvested. Because ownership is retained until the trees are harvested, the title does not pass when the sale or contract is made. Under this method, the question of the landowner's trade or business, as well as the amount and frequency of sales, does not arise; and landowners are pretty well assured of obtaining capital gain benefits.
The cutting of timber with election to treat as a sale is the third method and is more applicable to persons in the timber processing business than to individual owners of small acreages. Therefore, no explanation of the requirements under this method will be presented here.
In all cases where long-term capital gains are claimed, the holding period of the asset becomes a consideration. Timber must be held more than six months before it can be disposed of under the long-

If all requirements for long-term capital gains are met, then only onehalf of your net income from timber sales is taxable. With this incentive,
