Christmas Trees
Grown Easily
Growing Christmas trees in Georgia is profitable, but not enough people are involved in the industry. Georgia Christmas tree producers are now producing only about 15 percent of the trees needed for state markets.
Christmas tree production is a universal enterprise in the state

In comparison with other types of farm production, the investment in Christmas trees is low, and land needs are minimal. The proper seedlings for the various areas of the state are available through the

Georgia Forestry Commission and private nurseries throughout the south. Information and know-how necessary for growing Christmas trees can be obtained through county agents.
One way Christmas tree producers in Georgia have attempted to expand our industry has been by banding together into an organization known as the Georgia Christmas Tree Growers Association. The Association was formed in 1960 and strives to help individual growers with production and marketing problems and has encouraged Christmas tree research at the University of Georgia Experiment Stations.
Georgia Christmas trees are marketed through two basic systems. Growers can wholesale or can market through a system we call "choose and cut". Growers selling through the choose and cut system advertise their trees in a local area and allow families to come out to their plantation, take a saw and walk out through the trees. The families choose and harvest the tree of their choice and take it home.

Pecan Weevil Damage Study

Raises, Answers Questions

Wherever pecan weevils exist, they are the number one problem to growers.

Some estimate that a single female weevil needs 30 or more nuts per year to lay

her eggs and when those eggs hatch, the young will be devouring pecans. So

why does a pecan tree pictured have a net thrown over it to keep the weevils in-

side and eating away?

It's all part of a research project

led by Dr. S. G. Polles, assistant

professor of entomology at the

University of Georgia College of

retired from this position Oct. 31. Newberry had been the assistant
administrator of the Georgia milk marketing order in 1969. He has been associated with federal milk marketing orders since 1949 when he joined USDA's Agricultural Marketing Service, the agency that hand-
les marketing orders.

there and protect them against predators to monitor their activity and discover just how many weevils it takes to inflict serious damage.
"We're trying to determine when we need to spray by means of an economic threshold," says Polles. "We release a certain number of weevils over a certain period of time.
The cages are there to maintain a population level; we'll then correlate that level to the damage in the tree.
We will hand-harvest those trees,
and also relate the damage to the percentage of nuts at each level of the tree." (The research team has colorcoded pecans on the trees in three levels.)
In order to keep the population constant, the Georgia research team

sprays the trees with a knock-down

compound every week. The chemical dissipates in less than four hours, and

the same number of new weevils are then released.

Pine cones, small blocks of wood or kindling, wood chips and sawdust, or even one inch diameter rolls of tightly wrapped newspapers or magazines, tied at both ends, soaked in chemical solutions and dried, will give off flames of various colors when they are burned in the fireplace to add to Christmas cheer.

"In the past," says Polles, "people have said that if you find six weevils in a tree by bumping limbs, then you
should spray. We go back to the literature and we can't find where

Dear Editor:
We would like to share "Sarge" our rooster and "Tippie" our dog's picture with you. Sarge is now six-months old and has walked in this upright position since July. He lives with Dr. Hare, our rabbit, and since he was named Sarge he will not tolerate another chick in his pen. My son and I rescued him from the dump, where the local hat chery dumps their garbage and left-overs. We feel we have really found a prize.

THE MARKET BULLETIN

Probably the most expensive spice on earth, saffron is made from the dried stigmas of autumn crocus and every single one must be picked by hand. Each blossom con tains 3 stigmas and it takes 75,000 blossoms to yield one pound of saf fron.
Appropriately, saffron symbolizes necessity of guarding against ex cess. The herb is native to the Near East and saffron is the Arabian word for yellow. The deep-yellow color along with its aromatic properties have made the spice valuable for dying and flavoring foods for cen turies.
Song of Solomon 4:14 refers to saffron as one of the chief spices known and used in Biblical times. Even before then gods and god desses of ancient Greece were dressed in saffron-colored robes and Egyptians anointed their royalty with saffron-tinted oil. Fragrant per fumes were made with the spice and it was also used in making ex pensive cosmetics.
Saffron was not known to western Europe until after the Crusades. Roman legions carried the spice to England where it became so popular that a 14th century cook book calls for saffron in over half its recipes.
Most of the saffron imported to this country is from Spain and is a milder variety than the Italian saf fron. Either whole or ground, saffron should be used with discretion, not so much because of its price but because a little goes a long way. It gives distinctive color to breads and cakes and is often used to flavor rich dishes.
There is a false saffron, better known as safflower. This plant is of fered for sale in seed catalogs but true saffron is the product of the crocus.

placed in a mesh or porous bag, and submerged in the solution. A stone can weight the material down in the solution. A day or so of soaking should be adequate. Lift out and drain over the container and spread the treated materials out to dry.
If the materials are allowed to dry on newspapers, the newspapers themselves, when dry, may be rolled and wrapped tightly to burn in the fireplace.
The burning of the treated materials should be confined to a well-ventilated fireplace.
The treated cones and wooden blocks make good novelty Christmas gifts.

I have five large chestnut trees and the chestnuts are beginning to fall. What method should I use in caring for them after picking them up for storage?
Mrs. G. M., Hampton Spread the unopened burs in a drying shed out of the sun. The chestnuts should be removed from the burs and stored in a cool dry place. If you have only a few they can be kept in the refrigerator in a sealed container.
They'll keep for months. If planted, the nuts should be stratified in moist sand, sawdust or peat in an outdoor pit at least two feet deep and well covered with earth and straw. The seeds should be examined occasionally after February for sprouting. When germination starts, the nuts should be either planted or subjected^to temperatures slightly above 32 degrees in
order to inhibit growth until they are planted. Said a mouthful, didn't we?

Please tell me the cheapest phonograph made. G. P., Smyrna
That is a good one. Sorry, we* j*us*t d* on't know.
I need information on selling timber and pulpwood, estimating loads, weights, cord prices, etc.
L. L., Lumpkin
The Forestry folks have alrea*dy* c*on*tacted you. Good luck.
Please identify this plant. It grew from the roots of a grapevine we bought and has several limbs from the ground about four feet tall.
S. W., Millwood We think it's hackberry. This tree produces small round seeds which pass through the digestive system of birds and mammels. Your plant was probably planted by a bird. If y*ou* n*ee*d a shade tree, use this seedling.

What plum should I plant as a pollinator for Burbank? My Red June

blooms too early.

D. M. Wadley

Sorry about your problem. Try a Santa Rosa. It should do an excellent

job in most years, according to Butch Ferree, Horticulturist with the Ex

tension Service.

Do cattle eat seaweed?

V. C., Hampton

Some cattle feeds are supplem*en*ted* *with seaweed. Humans eat it too.

I would like information on showing rabbits and pigeons. J. M., Decatur.
Sorry, we don't have any information on rabbit shows. May we suggest that you contact the American Rabbit Breeders Association, C. C. Hutchins, Director, 2813 Meadowbrook Drive, Augusta 30906, for this in formation. For pigeons, try Mr. Tom Peacock, Atlanta Racing Pigeon Club, 1881 Langston Avenue, S*.W*., *A*tlanta 30310.

Enclosed is a "dropping" from, I guess a chipmunk, or a field mouse. Please

identify. I have a house in the country and everytime I go there I find these

droppings. I can't find where they come from.

J. D., Clayton

We were unable to identify from what critter the droppings came, but

were able to discern that the droppings were composed of insect parts. So,

whatever it is, it apparently preys on insects and should not harm your

house.

How can I cure gourds? Do they keep better painted? B. B., Gainesville
Don't paint the gourds. Gourds should be cut from the vine on dry clear days. Handle as you would eggs to prevent bruises ~ bruises cause rotting. Wash the gourds in a strong solution of non-bleaching disinfectant. After
washing place the gourds in a dry place with good air circulation until they are thoroughly dry. After they dry, wax with a liquid floor wax.

I seldom ask this question since I try and save them, but how can I kill a tree? This one I have been trying to do away with for months ~ salt, kerosene, root killer, etc., nothing works. I could cut it down, but as it is large I want to get roots and stump also.
R. P., Smyrna Forestry folks say (1.) "Girdle the tree with an axe and pour 245-T her
bicide around the cut area, (2) Cut the tree down and keep any sprouts cut back for a couple of years. (Cutting the sprouts will keep the tree from manufacturing any food for a growing season and this will kill the stump.)
or (3) pour a gallon of "buttermilk" around the base of the tree -- sets up a chemical reaction of some sort. We understand the Forestry folks never tested this method but it sounds good.

The "stuff' in the enclosed envelope is from the basket where I store my onions. I am concerned that insects/rodents are getting to my onions. Maybe it's onion seeds???
S. G., Atlanta Ain't onion seed. Looks like mice or crickets have been in your onion basket
