on all phases of turkey production, disease control and marketing, promote increased turkey consumption, attempt to improve methods in management and develop markets.
Turkey production expanded rapidly from a few hundred thousand birds in the 50's to more than two million birds in 1970. Annual production has averaged about two million birds during recent years. The growth value of the turkey market annually in Georgia currently has averaged about $10 million.
Although the national trend has been toward contract or integrated production, three-fourths of the turkey production in Georgia has remained in the hands of independent farm families. However, all Georgia turkeys are shipped out of the state for processing. Most of our turkeys go to processing plants in South Carolina and North Carolina but some go to Virginia and as far north as Ohio.
Early centers of turkey production in the state started in Pike, Barrow and Franklin counties. Along with these counties, Hart, Madison, Elbert, Clarke, Oconee, Oglethorpe, Wilkes and Richmond counties now make up the main turkey production regions in Georgia.
All the turkeys grown commercially in Georgia are of the large white variety. The finest breeding in the world is represented in the turkeys grown in Georgia. About one-half of these birds are hatched from eggs produced from breeder flocks kept in the state and hatched here.
The turkey industry moves at a fast pace and Georgia turkey growers are as progressive and innovative as any

Day Common weeds in Georgia

Over the river and through the wood, To grandfather's house we go; The horse knows the way To carry the sleigh Through the white and drifted snow.
Over the river and through the wood
Oh, how the wind does blow! It stings the toes And bites the nose, As over the ground we go.
Over the river and through the wood, To have a first-rate play; Hear the bells ring "Ting-a-ling-ding!" Hurrah for Thanksgiving Day!
Over the river and through the wood, Trot fast, my dapple-gray! Spring over the ground, Like a hunting hound! For this is Thanksgiving Day.
Over the river and through the wood, And straight through the barn-yard
gate, We seem to go Extremely slow It is so hard to wait!
Over the river and through the wood
Now grandmother's cap I spy! Hurrah for the fun! Is the pudding done? Hurrah for the pumpkin pie!

Check For Mildew
On Conning Jors
Do a lot of canning this summer? If you stored those foods in the basement or other mildew prone spots, check the jars. Even the most meticulous housekeeper and canner may leave a little foor or sticky syrup on the outside of a jar.
Mildew may have grown. Wash it off quickly. It is unsightly but should not affect quality of food if the jar is sealed and adequate steps in processing were taken.

Can Be Toxic To Animals

Several common weeds found in Georgia are highly toxic to all classes of livestock. These include, but are not limited to, several species each of the cof-
feebean, crotalaria and cocklebur families. Livestock normally do not by choice eat these plants, or their seeds, unless all other food sources are exhausted. However, mechanjcal harvesting of grains including corn, also harvests all other seeds that are present causing a contamination of livestock feed grains.

County Agents

The force feeding of poisonous seeds is often unintentionally done by grinding the seeds with grain that is to be used in making up a ration. This pollution of grain is more acute as the bottom of the storage bin is approached. The small hard seeds of the coffeebean and crotalaria sift to the bottom, increasing the number present per bushel of corn. This becomes increasingly important, for example, one teaspoon of crotalaria in a bushel of corn used in a hog ration produces toxicity in hogs.
A single exposure to crotalaria plant material, or seed may produce a long delayed effect, with the animal never fully recovering to become an economically productive individual. This chronically affected animal may represent a greater loss to the owner than death, because it continues to eat without gaining weight. The coffeebean plant and seed causes a muscular degeneration and paralysis in cattle with eventual death. The seed produces a severe diarrhea in hogs. One hundred and fifty seeds are fatal to adult chickens.
A lethal dose of the coffeebean for cattle is 0.15 percent of body weight which causes death in two weeks; only 0.3 percent body weight of cocklebur seed is lethal for cattle and only 200 grams of seed needed to kill a calf.
Actual losses due to consumption of toxic seeds are difficult to evaluate because of the vague symptoms of these poisonings. Signs of poisonings vary from those of a "poor doing" animal to one of sudderi deaths where heavy doses of weed seed are consumed. Terminal illness and losses from chronically affected animals are frequently blamed on a

Dear Editor:

Last year I set 13 rows, 82 steps long, of Georgia Red sweet potatoes and dug five large banks of large potatoes and one bank of seed. We dug them using old time potato rakes. The beds were made up high and the potatoes were on top and easy to roll out. It was easy to follow a lead root to the potato that had run into the middle. From one hill I decided to weigh the potatoes and had over 14 1/2 pounds. Then I found one that weighed 8 pounds -
one potato. My farm is east of Nashville and I am 84 years old, but still take care of my blueberries and gardens and potatoes. Last year I only had Georgia Red but this year I have a pink skin,
which is a tender round potato. I use Mocap, then a very little 5-10-15 and the rest of my fer tilizer is from the horse lot and mostly goat fertilizer. I find you get dusty working on a farm but you have plenty to eat if you are willing to work.

"I wish the Bald Eagle had not been chosen as the Representation of our Country; he is a Bird of bad moral character, like those among men who live by sharpening and robbing ... the turkey is a much more respectable bird, and withal a true original Native of America." ... Benjamin Franklin.
Long before colonists settled on this continent, wild turkeys roamed the eastern United States in large numbers. They lived in forests in small flocks and came out to the clearings only to feed. Being fast on their feet they run rather than fly when being chased. However, when they must fly, they fly high and fast at speeds estimated at more than 50 miles per hour.
A similar species, domesticated by the Aztecs, was discovered in Mexico by Spanish conquerors. Species of these birds were sent back to Spain and soon became popular there and elsewhere in Europe.
Europeans did not accept the origin of these birds from America but most thought turkeys came from Turkey, others thought India. In France it was known as I'lnde but in England it was known as the Turkey-bird.
British settlers in New England imported cows, chickens, and TURKEY-BIRDS from their homeland. In this roundabout way our barnyard turkeys got back to their native soil, very little changed from their wild brethren which are now rare except in sparsely settled sections of the southwest.

secondary problem such as pneumonia or parasitism. There is no known effective treatment for these plant and seed poisonings. The most effective procedure consists of removal of the animal from contaminated grains and plants.
Prevention is the most effective means of combating the problem. This can be done by the use of proper herbicides, or destroying the plants before they produce mature seed. Several years may be needed to accomplish an effective control because seeds may remain in the soil for longer than one year before germinating.
Handpicking of corn or harvesting with a mechanical snapper will eliminate most of the contamination of corn. Proper adjustment of combines will likewise reduce the contamination factor. The most effective measure in preventing the mixing of weed seeds in grain is to control the weeds in the fields through the use of proper herbicides to kill the plants before seeds are formed.
Grains that are contaminated by seeds of unknown source or type should be thoroughly cleaned before being used in animal feeds.

THE MARKET BULLETIN
Weather Conditions Go. Watermelons

Affect Pine Beetle
There appear to be several critical points during a season which are of primary importance in population size of the Southern pine beetle.
At least three generations are necessary for the development of a light-to-medium population, and four generations for a medium-to-
(Continued from last week.)
heavy population. For a small overwintering population to increase in the spring, there must be a moisture deficit then.
A very large overwintering population will survive a spring with no moisture deficit because of its great numbers. However, a shortage of moisture must occur by early summer for the population to continue to develop.
Dr. R. T. Franklin emphasizes that "September and October are critical months for sustaining the beetle .population. Moisture deficit at this time allows the maximum length season for the population increase.
The size of the overwintering population is crucial because of the decline in the numbers of beetles during the winter. Enough beetles must survive to sustain the new spring infestation even when there is no moisture deficit."
Although the beetles went into this past winter with an epidemic population, it is hard to predict what the situation will be this year, Franklin says. "The difficulty in predicting is due to the fact that there were many warm days during the winter when the beetles may have flown and then died in a cold snap before they had found a suitable tree to bore into."
In the future, Franklin hopes to combine this knowledge of the effects of moisture on beetle populations with information he is gathering on how other weather conditions affect the southern pine beetle. By programming all the different possibilities presented by changes in the weather, he hopes to be able to make accurate near future predictions of the insect's movements and numbers.

in the land. Our growers have adopted the latest research findings in breed, nutrition, management and disease control to achieve the best in efficient production.
Turkey growers in this country during 1974 have been caught in the squeeze between low market prices and high costs for feed and all other production inputs. Georgia turkey growers are no exception in this case having lost heavily on the 1974 production. However, compared to other top-quality protein foods, turkey will be a smart bargain for Georgia homemakers this year.
HUNTER SAFETY COURSES
Are you planning an out-of-state hunting trip? If you are, be sure to check on requirements for a hunting license. At the present time, 21 states and four Canadian provinces require that certain hunters show proof they have successfully completed an approved hunter safety course before they can receive a license.

Lead Nation
Georgia led the nation in the production of watermelons during the summer quarter (July, August, September), according to the Georgia Crop Reporting Service. Although an early hailstorm destroyed an estimated 400 to 500 acres in the major producing area, production increased 12 percent above last year's for the same period.
The increased production of watermelons was due largely to good yields promoted by adequate rainfall throughout the growing season. Specialization and good management practices also played a major role.
For the second consecutive year, Dawson county corn grower Ben Overstreet has set a new state yield record of over 200 bushels per acre. This year Overstreet produced 207.1 bushels per acre on 44 acres, exceeding the previous record he set in 1973 of 204.6 bushels.

FREEZING CHEESE You can freeze pieces of cheese that are less than two inches thick and weigh less than a pound. They'll keep for up to six months.
CHEESE SAVER
When end pieces of cheese become dry and hard, don't throw them away. Instead, grate them, then store them in the refrigerator in glass jars. Use the grated cheese to dress up casseroles, vegetables, soups and sauces.
SOIL TEST GARDEN
November is a good time to collect soil samples from next year's garden site. If lime is needed, a fall application is best. Several weeks will be required for limestone to react with the soil and increase the pH.
WEIGHT LOSS TIP
If you're trying to reduce, eat breakfast. Lack of an adequate breakfast means less energy by late morning. It also produces a feeling of hunger which may lead to snack ing and overeating at the next meal, say food specialists with the University of Georgia Cooperative Extension Service.
