Range of Talents
For Ag Career
As we are all well aware agriculture has changed in the last 20 years. Today it's a highly complex, mechanized business. There are hundreds of specialized occupations. Nowadays when people talk about agriculture they're talking about agribusiness. Careers in agribusiness require a broad range of talents.
Over 200 schools across the state offer courses in agri-
business education. In additi] on to programs in production i agriculture, these schools offer other types I of agribusiness i courses such as \ agricultural, supplies and services, food processing, forestry, natural resources, horticulture and agricultural mechanics. A unique feature of the agribusiness or vocational agriculture program is that learning doesn't end in the classroom. You'll
(Our guest columnist this week is J. E. Dunn, Executive Secretary, Georgia Association FFA, 323 State Office Building, Atlanta 30334.)
find learning can be an exciting experience in the FFA, the youth organization for students in agribusiness education. The FFA is a vital part of classroom agribusiness education, providing a laboratory for the practical application of lessons in leadership, citizenship, cooperation and occupational development The FFA prepares students to take responsibility when* called on for leadership in business or the community. That's why many members have found their experience in the FFA one of the most rewarding of their high school education.
What does FFA stand for? Today, it stands for many things to students of Vocational Agriculture who form its membership.
For some it stands for Future Farmers of America, for at no time in the history of the world has such a success story been written than that of the ability of the American Farmer to feed the world. He has enough technical knowledge of farming to provide high quality food and fiber for himself and 51 othei persons; thirty-seven of them in the United States and 14 of them overseas.

Lovebug's Bite
Is Harmless?
Love knows no season, but what about the lovebug? Lovebugs (maleand female often seen in pairs hence the name lovebug) are small flies that have recently invaded South Georgia.
Two generations of these pesky creatures^are produced each
year, in the spring and the fall,
he adults drift long ' the highways striking motorists' cars and the splatter quickly covers the windshield, grill, radiator and lights. The nuisance often'requires frequent stops for a cleanup. A piece of window screen placed between the grill and radiator will help prevent clogging of the cooling fins and reduce engine overheating. The splattered remains should be cleaned off as soon as possible. Avoid painting building exteriors while the bugs are in flight also. They seem to congregate on porches and in carports. Except for the mess they make, lovebugs are harmless.
Fertilizer Situation
Prompts Meeting
A three day Fertilizer Workshop will be held October 30, 31, and November 1 concerning the fertilizer situation and what to do about it. The workshop will be held at the Rural Development Center and Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College in Tifton.
Farmers and researchers interested in attending should contact Larry Marchant, RDC, Tifton 31794.
Ag-Alums Meet
The 20th annual Agricultural Alumni Association meeting will be held in Athens October 11 and 12.
Eat Peas And Beans
Gnats. Ugh! If you've spent any time in South Georgia in the summer, you're probably a past master at flicking the tiny, swarming pests away from your face.
Riding Horses Needed
For Student Training
Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College began for the first time this fall quarter a Horsemanship Program to teach students care of horses, horse management, horse breeding and added a course in Horseback Riding in Physical Education. Interest has been so great that more horses are needed by the college for the program.
Farmers or families wishing to donate good riding horses should contact Dr. Frank McCain, Chairman, Division of Agriculture, ABAC, Tifton 31794. Donated horses are also tax-deductible.
4-H, FFA Steer Show
Entry Deadline Nears
Georgia 4-H and FFA members entering the next State Junior Steer Show, March"29-31, 1975, must have entries in by October 15, 1974.
Steers must be weighed and tattooed by the county vocational agricultural teacher and the county agent and both must sign the entry blank. For additional information, contact your local county agent.
Go. Seafood Operators
Start Cooperative, Inc.
Fishermen and shrimp house operators in Georgia recently formed the Georgia Fishermen's Co-op, Inc. to promote the fishing and seafood industries in Georgia. Gene Sumner, Darien, was elected President. Anyone interested in more information should contact Georgia Fishermen's Co-op, Inc., Darien 31305.
Honey Production
Unfavorable conditions have led to a decline in Georgia's honey production. Total production from commercial apiaries with 300 or more colonies is expected to total 1,750,000 pounds. This is only 51 percent of the 1973 production and the lowest production since estimates began in 1971.
But a University of Georgia College of Agriculture Exper-
iment Stations scientist who has been researching eye gnats for three years believes they may have a more serious effect than human irritation
they may be
NORMAL tural crops as well.
Dr. Edward L. Snoddy, assistant professor of entomology at the Coastal Plain Station and the leader of U. Ga. eye gnat study, has found evidence that may prove the "Co-
astal Plain eye gnat," feeds on the emerging seed of crops in its immature form. If this is so, eye gnats may be more serious a threat than previously CURLY WING thought.
The gnats were the most fond of Southern peas, but they seemed to be causing the greatest damage to soybeans. Apparently, female gnats follow the - planting of seeds a process which involves dist-
urbing the soil. It is known from lab observation that when a seed starts swelling there is a great increase in metabolic activity. The preliminary theory RUDIMENTAL is that th 'S in "
crease in activity attracts the larvae; they gather around the seed and attack the embryo. , What can researchers do if the eye gnat is confirmed as the culprit?
"We may have to start working on better seed treatments for deterring the gnat larvae," says Snoddy. "It would be like any other agricultural pest. We'd just have to keep looking and searching."

Dear Editor: Please share this bit of good news I discovered quite by
accident. I have a 1950 National Pressure Cooker Co. canner No. 7. It needed some new parts and since there is no longer a National Pressure Cooker Co. I thought that it was obsolete and good only for scrap. However I learned that National and Presto had merged and the new company is National Presto Industries, Inc. Their local service representative is:
Presto Parts and Service Corp. 3595 Clearview Parkway NE North Park Atlanta, Georgia 30340 For the lady who advertised for No. 7 parts and all others who may have these older cookers, parts may be obtained at very reasonable prices at this address or by writing National Presto Industries, Inc., Eau Claire, Wisconsin 54701. These older cookers are of much better construction than
the newer ones and are well worth the little it costs to fix them. I do hope you will share this with your readers as the dealers I talked to didn't even know these two companies were the same.

Ga. Housewives Put The Lids On!
During the 14th century this plant became so widely cultivated in England that it affectionately became known as "Old English Lovage". The dried root was especially popular in the American colonies as something to chew during lengthy church services.
Lovage is celery-like in all respects except size. It grows to a height of 4 to 6 feet. The leaves are finely divided and deep, glossy green.
The leaves and stalks of the plant can be used in cooking the same way celery is used. However, due to the size of the plant, the leaves and stalk should be cut while the plant is still young and tender.
This perennial plant prefers sun or partial shade and can be propagated from seeds started in late fall to produce seedlings the following spring.
Valera Jessee
The enthusiasm in canning this past season has been unbelievable. This is evidenced by the large number of visitors to the Georgia Department of Agriculture Atlanta State Farmers' Market Cannery an estimated 10 to 15 thousand households.
Representatives from several other states also visited the cannery for assistance in opening canneries in their states. Widespread coverage was given to the operation of the cannery by the news media through articles in magazines, newspapers, and TV stations.
Cash receipts for the 1974 season totaled $23,714.49 and only 13,295 cans were left in stock at the end of the season.
The following gives a breakdown of the activities of the cannery by month for the 1974 season:
Pecans Dropping Means Trouble
Owners of pecan trees should be watchful for pecans dropping unusually early during the next several weeks.
Early dropping pecans are a sign of infestation by the pecan weevil which is one of the most destructive insects attacking Georgia pecans.
Weather conditions have been ideal in many areas recently for the emergence of the weevil. Pecan weevils cost the pecan industry more than $7.5 million last year inGeorgia alone.
If weevils or weevil damage is found, chemicals should be applied and reapplied every seven days throughout the weevil emergence period.
Chemicals recommended for pecan weevil control include Sevin, EPN, or a mixture of Toxaphene and Guthion.

We started a bee colony two years ago. Our problem is that the bees are so vicious until we can't check them or try to replace the queen without being attacked. Should we destroy them?
Mrs. W.E., Atlanta
The best way to straighten out an ill-tempered colony with as little disrup-
tion as possible would be to wait until next spring to replace your queen. We
mailed instructions.

The Ga. Sales tax people tell us we must collect sales tax on all seed, feed and fertilizer purchased for home use. Some of our competitors don't and we are getting complaints. Who is right?
W.C., Dalton
Only if the crops being raised are to be sold is sales tax omitted. Send a list of those not charging sales tax* to* t*he tax folks and watch the action.

Let the letters "FFA" stand for Food, Fiber and Agribusiness.
Agriculture is the business of putting 615 million meals a day on the table for 205 million Americans. Out of every 100 jobs in private industry, 33 are related to agriculture and food.
If you prefer, let the letters "FFA" stand for Famous for Action. Opportunities for action build selfconfidence.
Let "FFA" stand for Fortified for Abundance.
We are challenged in knowing that a nation's strength lies not in her military power, but in her ability to feed the people. FFA encourages improved agriculture through improved farm practices and agribusiness. FFA members are prepared and trained in all aspects of America's largest industry and subscribe to the belief that "He who serves agriculture, serves all mankind."
Let "FFA" mean Foster Freedom Always; or maybe it means Freedom for America.
Let the FFA be Foundation for Achievement. Francis Bacon, the English Philosopher of the sixteenth century said, "It is not what men eat, but what they digest that makes them strong; not what we gain, but what we save that makes us rich; not what we read, but what we remember that makes us learn; and not what we preach, but what we practice that makes us Christians."
The "FFA" means Figure Far Ahead. What a wealth of opportunity lies in the years ahead for FFA members who remain loyal to themselves, their country, and their God.
Which brings us to our final, and perhaps most vital meaning of FFA. It means Find Faith in the Almighty.
FFA members believe that if you take God with you, the enthusiasm will come forth with great but humble rewards. This is truly the strength of America.
