Georgia Tobacco
Standards High
Georgia farmers are fortunate in having Commissions composed of producers of every major commodity to administer a self-help program in research, promotion and education. These programs are made possible without tax money by a small voluntary assessment on the production of every major crop.
Tobacco producers are in a somewhat different position from
the producers of any other crop with regard to the promotion of their commodity. We do not have any contact with the ultimate user of our commodity. We produce only the raw product and are dependent upon manufacturers to promote our tobacco in its final form. We do however, contribute and cooperate in the promotion of unmanufactured tobacco sales in new

foreign market areas, but, we have no way to promote our commodity with people in the same way that food products can be promoted. Our greatest efforts, therefore, are somewhat different from any other major Georgia farm crop.
Georgia tobacco will release approximately 150 million dollars to our economy in 1974. Of great importance is the fact that three-fourths of this money will come from foreign countries, adding to our favorable balance of trade. Also, on a basis of 6 or 7 to one, this 150 million dollars placed in circulation means that our economy will benefit in the amount of nearly one billion dollars from this current tobacco crop.
Another matter that will be of interest to many people is that 70 million dollars each year goes into our state treasury from taxes on tobacco products purchased in Georgia.
The fact that we sell about 70 percent of our tobacco to foreign manufacturers indicates that they have a preference for Georgia produced tobacco, while the entire flue-cured belts export less than half their total production. There are several reasons for this.
First and foremost, is the fact that

Caution Urged
With Pesticides
If someone swallows a pesticide, check the label for first aid treatment. Then call or go to a doctor or hospital immediately.
Take along the pesticide container so that the doctor can properly identify the pesticide and check emergency directions and antidotes.

Reading Labels; Fall Go-togethers

Raking leaves and re-seeding the lawn in the fall are go-togethers. There are lots of reasons why your lawn may not look as nice this fall as you would like it
to look. Too little or too much rain, too much traffic across it during the summer, too many insects and weeds, and it could also be that you planted too many of the wrong seeds in the first place.

Fall Farmland
Editon Coming
The Fall Farmland Editon is coming October 23. The deadline for ads received in the FARMERS AND CONSUMERS MARKET BULLETIN office is October 9. Please remember that no realtors, brokers or dealers are allowed to advertise in this edition, only individual farm owners wishing to sell their personal property or wishing to purchase farm property for their own use.
The Horse Show Edition is October 2. The deadline is September 25.
FARM NUMBERS
The number of farms in the U. S. is projected to drop to 2 million by 1980. And the number of families who rely primarily on the farm for their income will be much smaller than this.

If it looks like this year is your year to re-seed, study the labels on packages of grass seed before you buy. Buy the package with the highest percentage of the grass seed you want
on your lawn.
What may appear as a bargain to you in lawn seed may produce a coarse and ugly lawn. In the long run, the price you pay for good seed of preferred kinds and varieties is a small price to pay for a beautiful lawn around your home. Remember, it only takes a few pounds of seed for an ordinary sized lawn; and while
you may pay more for fine-textured seed, you are getting more seeds per
pound than when you buy the cheaper but bigger seeds in a coarsetextured blend. No matter what the price on the package, read the grass seed label to know what you are buying.
The Federal Seed Act, and the
Georgia state seed laws, help ensure that the labels will truthfully show the percentages of seeds in the package. Next spring, your lawn will
show that you cared about it enough to read the label before you bought the seed.

Sorghum Festival Promises Variety

The Fifth Annual Sorghum Festival will be held on October 17th thru the 20th in Blairsville. This
festival is held at a time when you can see sorghum being made the old fashioned way. Many events are planned including the biscuit and syrup sopping championship. Mr. Winert, last years champion consumed thirty three cat head biscuits sopped in sorghum syrup in a fifteen minute
time limit.

Other events will include cross cut log sawing, greased pole climbing, rock throwing, old fashioned syrup
mill in operation, mountain arts and crafts on display and for sale, antiques, wood carving, spinning and
weaving, unique flowers, ceramics, quilting, country music, country singing, clogging, square dancing, parades and many many others. For further information please contact: Ron Arrendale, Blairsville, Georgia

Dear Editor: As a result of having my name in the BULLETIN I have
received a great deal of "junk" and religious mail. While it is no trouble for me to discard It, these people are wasting their time and money by sending it to me. Would you please carry an article in your paper requesting that these people not use advertisers' names and addresses in this manner.
Name withheld by request
(Editor's Note: This is a common occurrence that happens to people who advertise or have their name published in any publication, whether it be the MARKET BULLETIN or a local
newspaper, etc. We have in the past been able to stop some solicitors from
using our advertisers in this manner since their type solicitation was on the legal borderline. However, we do not know of any way we can stop the many people who have ac-
cess to our paper from using the names and addresses they
find. If, however, any objectionable mail is received, we would
appreciate knowing about it and will notify the postal
authorities.)

CAUTION CAUTION
We have had a number of calls about last week's article in using plastic jugs for canning. We would like to call to your attention that these jugs should not be used In a pressure canner. The type of foods canned in plastic jugs should be of high acid content, such as tomatoes and different types of fruit juices.

Ambrosia, Jesuit tea, stinkweed, feather geranium, American worm-
seed, oak-leaf geranium, Mexican tea all are common names of
Chenopodium botrys, better known
in these parts as Jerusalem Oak. Earlier this year we published a
request in our "Letters" column for
information on this plant. We were surprised to learn that so many of our readers remember as children
eating Jerusalem Oak candy seasonally for whatever ailed them.
Others advised us that the boiled syrup was the "best cough medicine you can find" and was
made by boiling the leaves and
stems to make a thick syrup. Although we received only one
report that it could be used as a sunburn remedy, we pass it along to you as an item of interest. Boil
leaves and stems and apply with a damp cloth and within 20 minutes it
will supposedly cure sunburn.
The plant is considered by most to be unattractive but its leaves are decorative in dried flower arrange-
ments. It has a strong unpleasant
odor, much divided green hairy leaves (hence the common name feather geranium) and reaches a height of about 2 to 3 feet.
Once established, this plant will
seed itself like a weed. The sturdy white roots will survive through
most winters except extremely severe ones. The stems grow heavy like tomato vines and will flourish anywhere.
Georgia Tobacco
(Continued From Page 1)
we are blessed with a climate and total environment that cannot be duplicated by any treatment by man. Secondly, we in Georgia have been guided by forward looking people in research and education to provide the know-how to produce a product that meets the rigid standards demanded of it by our foreign customers. These standards are also necessary for our domestic buyers.
In past years we have made numerous adjustments in our cultural practices to improve the quality of our tobacco, and to make it even more preferred by our customers. Our growers have always given a wholehearted response when these changes in practices had to be made. Tobacco growers seem to take a special pride in trying to produce a finer crop every year.
We are optimistic about the future

Do moth balls hurt the germination of seeds? We save seed and add moth balls to keep out insects. If it is harmful to use moth balls, what is the best method to accomplish this?
J. P., Monroe

Our Seed Division admits that it is safe to use moth balls in seed con tainers. As a matter of fact, it is a common practice to use moth balls to prevent insects when there is a small quantity of seed involved.

The enclosed sample was taken from a plant that is taking over my yard and killing out my grass. Is there anything I can use to eliminate it without harming my lawn?
Mrs. L. R., Pineview

The plant you submitted for identification is Cudweed (Gnaphalium purpureum L.). The available research bulletins do not list any chemicals for the eradication of this plant. A simple method is to kill the plants by applying excessive amounts of fertilizer. You can take a large spoon and place one or two spoonfuls on the center of each plant. This will kill the bud and will stimulate adjacent grass plants to grow.

Can you tell me more about what is called "Devil's Snuff Box"? Recently my husband dug one up which was the size of a cereal bowl with tulip-like petals which discharged a fine black dust when opened.
Mrs. E. D., Atlanta

The "Devil's Snuff Box" is one of the puff-ball mushrooms and is con sidered edible when it is still white inside. They do grow to be quite large. As do other members of the mushroom family, they grow on organic matter. We are enclosing the information this office has available on this mushroom and hope that you find it helpful.

Newcastle Disease Study

Since 1970, virulent strains of Newcastle disease have produced severe worldwide losses in poultry. If the disease becomes so widespread in the United States that it cannot be eradicated, an economical means of evaluating vaccination procedures will become necessary.

Present methods of vaccination have had highly varied results. Scientists think this extreme variability may be due to the particular Strain and potency of the vaccine as well as the route of administration.
In studies at ARS' Southeast Poultry Research Laboratory in Athens, Ga., a simple and rapid microtest procedure was evaluated for measuring response of poultry to Newcastle vaccination.
During a year's application in at least one large diagnostic laboratory in Georgia, the manual-microtest hemagglutination-inhibition (III) procedure proved to be a very satisfactory compromise between the old test tube method (macrotesting) and a highly automated and expensive microtest method.
Hemagglutination (HA) is the clumping reaction of red blood cells when suspended in a liquid that contains Newcastle disease virus. Specific antibodies directed against that virus will inhibit the hemagglutination.
Blood samples were obtained with syringe and needle either from the wing vein of the chicken or by cardiac puncture and then placed in. tubes treated with a silicone solution

to aid in clot release. After clotting was adequate and the serum had been chilled at 4 C., sometimes overnight, it was harvested with disposable glass pipettes and placed in microtest plates.
Similar plates were prepared for serum dilution by adding antigensaline mixture to each well. The sera were diluted until there was lack of inhibition of agglutination evidenced by a distinct "button" of red blood cells in the bottom. From this end point the antibody titers were determined.
Using stock inactivated antigen and washed red blood cells which have been prepared in advance, an experienced technician can test as many as 700 sera in approximately 7 hours.
The serum-storage plate, developed by Southeast Poultry Research Laboratory scientist Dr. James E. Williams and biological laboratory technician Alton D. Whittemore, occupies minimum freezer space and allows simultaneous pickup and dilution of 12 sera, utilizing 12 microdiluters to each microdiluter handle.
Equipment costs are 10 times less for the compromise manual method than for the automated microtest method.
Described by veterinary medical officer Charles W. Beard and biological laboratory technician William J. Wilkes, the procedure also affords savings in reagents and makes possible a reproducible determination of antibody levels'in serum.
