Dynamic Research
Benefits Georgia
In the past few months, some very exciting things have been happening at the University of Georgia College of Agriculture Experiment Stations, and it is not an exaggeration when I say
that you are to see one of the most dynamic research programs in the country on cattle and swine swing into operation here in Georgia.
We have always had capable researchers in these fields in the Experiment Stations; the new factor is the construction and opening of some modern and

long-needed facilities for these scientists that will allow them to expand their programs in these areas.
At our Coastal Plain Experiment Station in Tifton, completion of a new swine research facility, a beef cattle feeding and feed processing center with terrific research potential, and a new livestock sales arena with holding pens are among the most significant developments of the year.
A contract was recently awarded at Tifton for the construction of a new dairy cattle unit while at the College Station in Athens, new swine and dairy facilities are allowing our scientists a greater potential scope for study than ever before. Our new Dairy Cattle Research Center is expected to be completed in the fall, while our Swine Research Center in Athens is already almost ready for use. It's one of the outstanding individual swine feeding facilities in the United States.
We are not saying that our new facilities are a panacea for the problems which confront Georgia's dairy, beef and swine industries. No thinking Georgian could say that either. We all know that research results do not come about overnight; when agricultural research is undertaken correctly, it takes time, hard work, and support. What we are saying is that our old facilities in these areas of study were simply not adequate to do the job, which is to support Georgia's agriculture with modern, factual, and useful scientific investigation.
The new facilities are a tribute to all those who understand the need for a modern ag research program the legislators, members of the board of regents, agribusinessmen and researchers who are making dreams a reality, and the people of Georgia, who understand that progress does not come about just by wishing for it.

Tobacco Sales Start July 15

Commissioner of Agriculture Tommy Irvin has set Monday, July 15,as the date for flue cured tobacco sales to start in south Georgia. . His action came following a meeting of the state flue cured tobacco advisory committee in Macon. The 1 1 man committee, after surveying conditions throughout the tobacco belt, recommended July 15.
"Although it was suggested that July 9 might also be considered, warehouses compiling the information as to how much tobacco will be sold on each warehouse
Go. Coffon Day Coming July 17
Cotton Promotion Day will be held at the Dooly County Methodist Campground, Vienna, Georgia on Wednesday, July 17 -beginning at 10:30 AM.
Activities will include the presentation of awards in connection with the Money Maker Cotton Production Program sponsored by the Agriculture Commodity Commission for Cotton through the Cooperative Extension Service.
For entertainment country music will be provided by Bill Blalock and The Modern Sounds of Bluegrass Band along with some of South Georgia's finest gospel singing by the Master's Trio from Rochelle.
P. R. Smith, Chairman of the
Agricultural Commodity Commission for Cotton, will be presiding. Commissioner of Agriculture, Tommy Irvin, and Dr. William P. Flatt, Director Experiment Stations, are scheduled to speak.
Other activities will include a cotton fashion show featuring a number of district and state winners in the 4H Cotton Boll project and crowning of a new Miss Georgia Cotton.

have not had time to fill their labor needs," Irvin said. "Also buying companies advise they need at least two weeks to work out a schedule for their buyers based on the availability of tobacco in each market area," he added.
The Commissioner said other than sales beginning a week later than some growers would like, he could see no other serious affect on tobacco farmers because of problems presented by the new marketing system.
"I am confident that with everybody working together we will solve these problems and have one of the best tobacco seasons in our history," Irvin said.
Screwworms Pose
Possible Threat
Livestock owners in the southeastern states are warned to be on the lookout for possible screwworm infestations.
According to USDA officials screwworms have been increasing in the southwest and could pose a threat to southeastern livestock.
Screwworms, the flesh-eating larvae of the screwworm fly, in the past have caused millions of dollars in damages to the livestock industry. The pest was eradicated from the southeast in 1958-59.
The risk to Georgia is that an animal could be shipped into the southeast from the southwest with a screwworm-infested wound. All it takes is one infested wound to create a problem.
Livestock and pet owners are urged to inspect their animals frequently for wounds.

Number 27
Peanut Farmers Need To Vote Send In Ballot
Georgia peanut farmers have only a few days left to make a decision on whether or not they want to establish a special program designed to protect against peanut income losses.
With no federal price supports on peanuts contaminated with aspergillus-flavus mold, the Georgia Agricultural Commodity Commission for Peanuts has proposed a special stabilization fund to indemnify producers for their losses. The fund is designed to pay producers the difference between oil value and government support levels.
Peanuts contaminated with the mold can not be sold for edible purposes and may be used only for vegetable oil. Such peanuts last year averaged around $227 per ton while edible peanuts sold for $328 per ton.
Peanut farmers in Georgia have received ballots to participate in a referendum deciding if they want to set up such a program by agreeing to an assessment of $5.50 per ton to finance the program.
Some 21,000 ballots were mailed out for the June 7 - July 6 referendum but as of June 24, only 3,853 ballots had been returned to the Georgia Department of Agriculture.
Unless peanut farmers get their ballots in soon and unless some 1 1,000 approve the Commission's proposal, growers will have to accept whatever they can get for aspergillusflavus mold peanuts at harvest time, according to agricultural leaders.
Tim Todd, Jackson, Ga., received top honors at the thirteenth annual Natural Resources Conservation Workshop at Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College. Charles B. Place, Jr., President, Georgia Chapter, Soil Conservation Society of America, presented Tim with an automatic rifle and a $333 scholarship to any college in Georgia. Sam Dunaway, Workshop Director looks on. The 1974 Workshop was attended by 210 boys and 48 girls from 133 counties in Georgia, the largest number in the history of the Workshop. This was the first year girls attended.

I am a Georgia cracker (and that means 100%) so why was I left wanting when I ordered a new doubled bed quilt and received a 3/4 bed quilt. You get cold if your feet stick out and you do not have cover enough to tuck on the side. I believe 80 x 108 is the old Georgia quilt size that my mother made.

What 9

In many European countries,
costmary is dedicated to the Virgin
Mary but it is also associated with
Mary Magdalene. From this
association it derives its common
name "Sweet Mary".
Early American colonists used
the leaves of costmary as book-
markers, especially in their Bibles
and hence it received another com-
mon name of "Bible Leaf".
The English knew costmary as
"alecost" because it was once used
to flavor beer and ale. Greek
physicians thought it had great
curative powers but there is no
record of what they thought it
would heal. Costmary was probably
one of the strewing herbs strewn on
floors and used for scenting the
washing water at meals.
Costmary is a perennial with
unusually large leaves. The toothed
edge leaves are normally about 7
inches long. Although the ap-
pearance of the plant is somewhat
weedy, the sweet scent of the
foliage makes it a pleasant herb for the garden.
This is an easy herb to grow and
is propagated by division, seed and by underground runners. It prefers
sun or partial shade and ordinary
well-drained garden soil.
Costmary leaves are frequently
placed in drawers and closets to
give linens a fresh aroma.
