Watermelon Time
Is Approaching
Watermelon time is fun time. Although the watermelon is not native to North America it has become one of the nations favorite fruits. Millions of Americans each summer enjoy the sweet deliciousness of watermelon. Watermelon is not only a palate pleaser but stands high in nutrition.
But, watermelons are big business in Georgia also. In 1973 approximately 160 million pou-
nds were grown and marketed in our State.
The crop prospects for this year are good and quality should be excellent. Harvest began June 15th. Tonnage will probably exceed the 1973 crop. Several years ago a number of watermelon growers and distributors of the State founded the Georgia Watermelon Growers and
(Our guest columnist this week is C. L. (Buddy) Leger, President, Georgia Watermelon Growers and Distributors Association, Box 686, Cordele 31015. He is also 1st Vice President of the National Watermelon Growers and Distributors Association._______________
Distributors Association, which immediately joined the National Water- melon Growers and Distributors Association. The purpose of these organizations is to promote the best interests of the industry from production to consumption.
Each year several events are held in the state in recognition of the Watermelon industry. The first of these events is Watermelon Festival Week which begins June 26th in Cordele, Georgia. The climax of the weeks activities is the State Watermelon Queen pageant which will be held at 8:00 P.M., June 28th at the Crisp County High School auditorium.
Then, on June 30th everyone is invited to come to the Atlanta Farmers Market you will be given a slice of ice cold watermelon to eat while you are entertained by well known country music stars.
WATERMELON TIME IS TRULY FUN TIME.

Lawn mower Time Arrives;

Proper Use, Care Needed

"Commissioner for a day" Kerry Louis Wilson tries out Georgia Commissioner of Agriculture Tommy Irvin's "big chair." Kerry was elected Commissioner of Agriculture at Boy's State, an American Legion sponsored program to familiarize young people with state government. Young men from all over Georgia gather and try their hand at "running the state" for a week. Kerry is from Hiawassee, Georgia, Towns County.
Stone Mtn. Park
Celebrates July
Visitors to Stone Mountain Park during July will find something for everyone to enjoy. Scheduled are symphony concerts, spectacular fireworks, a barbershop quartet, clogging groups, bluegrass and jazz bands, folk dancing, Model A car show and flea market and a horse show.
Star Spangled Week, June 30-July 7, is scheduled with old-fashioned Independence excitement.
Lack Of Chin Hurls Ga. Peach
Georgia's peach growers are expecting only 45 million pounds of peaches this year, according to the Georgia Crop Reporting Service. This level of production will be 45 percent of the short 1973 production and 24 percent of the more normal 1972 production.
The lack of chilling hours is the principal cause of the poor crop. The South Georgia area will have a very slim crop, while early varieties in Middle Georgia have a fair set and are being thinned; however, those varieties requiring a greater number of chill hours' have a very poor set.
This latter category represents the majority of the trees in this area. In North Georgia most varieties have a fair set and thinning is in progress.
IMITATION MARGARINE
Margarine is required by law to contain 80 per cent fat. Otherwise, it must be labeled "imitation," say home economists at the University of Georgia Cooperative Extension Service.

Summer means lawnmower time, and that means danger. This year approximately 123,000 Americans will end up in hospital emergency rooms as a result of accidents associated with yard and garden equipment.

Don't Forget
Watermelon Day
The Twelfth Annual Watermelon Day will be held at the State Farmers' Market June 30th.
Activities include three hours of country-music entertainment starring the Nashville sounds of Jim Ed Brown and Ronnie Milsap. Watermelon Day is sponsored by the Georgia Department of Agriculture in cooperation with the Georgia Watermelon Growers Association. Free melon will be served from 2-6 p.m. Showtime begins at 3 p.m.
Price Support
Set For Peanuts
The U.S.D.A. announced on May 9th the minimum national average price support rate for 1974-crop peanuts at $358.50 per ton, the lowest level allowed by law but still 9.1 per cent above last year.
Under federal law, peanut supports must be set between 75 and 90 per cent of the "fair earning power" parity price for the crop. Officials said the rate announced is 75 per cent of the May peanut parity.
The announcement means the 1974 support cannot be less than $358.50 a ton but officials pointed out the final support rate may be higher if the 75 per cent of parity calculation produces a higher dollars-and-cents figure on August 1, the date when the next peanut marketing year begins.

Heading the list of products involved with serious injuries and deaths are power lawnmowers, riding mowers and garden tractors.
There are now some 45 million power mowers in use in the U. S. Annually, they are associated with 60,500 injuries that require hospital emergency room care serious cuts, punctures, fractures, amputations, loss of sight, and other permanent disabilities.
The greatest percentage of power
lawnmower accidents is attributed to rotary power mowers.
In-depth investigations of accidents over the past few years reveal two major hazard patters associated with rotary power mowers:
1. Direct contact with moving blades a clump of grass clogged in the discharge chute has lured many a gardener to pain and misfortune as has a quick adjustment while the motor is on. A foot slipping under the mower while mowing on an incline or in tall grass and encountering an obstacle such as a rock has accounted for numerous injuries.
2. Propelled objects operators, bystanders, children, and neighbors nearby have been severely injured by small pieces of wire, small rocks, stones, and bits of wood and metal shot from discharge chutes.
Many accidents could be averted by careful attention to instruction manuals, proper maintenance and the use of common sense.
VEGETABLE PACKAGING
A number 2 or number 303 can of vegetables is equal to a pound of fresh vegetables or a ten ounce package of frozen vegetables, say Extension home economists at the University of Georgia.

Dear Editor:
I got this recipe for my own furniture polish from an antique dealer who refinishes lots of furniture and it is good:
1/3 cup of boiled linseed oil 1/3 cup of turpentine 1/3 cup of vinegar Mix these together and shake before using. Pour on soft cloth rub good into furniture. Wipe dry with another clean cloth. It will polish furniture and bring but the wood grain.
Ruby Miller Macon, Georgia
(Editor's note: Do not boil your own linseed oil it won't work. Buy the boiled linseed oil from a paint or hardware store.)

Cotuuutet?

"And the House of Israel called

thereof Manna: and it was like

coriander seed, white; and the taste

of it was like wafers made with

honey." Exodus 16:31.

Coriander seed are often referred

to in the Bible in comparison to

Manna. They have been discovered

in Egyptian tombs and are thought

by historians to be one of the very

first spices used in cookery. Corian-

der, while native to the

Mediterranean and Orient, was im-

ported to this country before 1670.

The flavor of coriander is similar

to a combination of anise, cumin

and orange. It becomes more flavor-

ful the longer it is kept. Ground

seeds are used in pastries, cheese,

salads and soups. Whole seeds are

the center of old-fashion penny

candy jawbreakers.

Coriander is a member of the

carrot family and it is a relative of

parsley. It is, however, an annual

and parsley is biennial.

Fresh coriander leaves are sold

as Chinese parsley or "cilantro".

Most people do not find the fresh

leaves appetizing though as in-

dicated by the meaning of the root

word "coris" which means bedbug.

The plant reaches a height of 12-

18 inches with lacy delicate leaves

which are ill-smelling when bruised.

Small pinkish-white flowers bloom

in clusters in June and July.

For a pleasant ending to a meal,

crush a coriander seed in the bot-

tom of your coffee cup before ad-

ding the brew.

Straight Line
I have a Christmas cactus that has bloomed once after my mother gave it to me but has not bloomed for the last two years. Can you tell me what to do to make it bloom again?
Mrs. F. V., Warner Robins
Flowering cacti fail to flower because of any number of reasons. Usually they set flower buds at 50 55 degrees Fahrenheit night temperature. However, if your plant receives light at night from lamps, fixtures, etc., they will not set flower buds. For flower development in the home, it will be necessary to place your plants in a room with 60 - 65 degrees F. night temperature and where they are not exposed to lights after the daylight hours end. At room temperature 70 degrees F. flower buds seldom form regardless of daylengths or lights. Repot the cactus if you haven't already done so. Use a well drained, clean soil mixture. Grow the plant outside on the porch or in light shade until October. Take inside and water sparingly once a month. During November, water twice (early in month and late). If the plant shrivels, it may be necessary to water more frequently. After November gradually move the plant into an exposure with full sun. Water weekly and use a liquid fertilizer in your water; follow directions on the container. Do not keep plant damp after buds begin to show. After flowering, let the plant go through a rest period until new leaves start forming.

Lije Brown is gone, the neighbors say,
Well, some man goes 'most every
day,
But food for thought to us is lent In ponderin' the way he went. For Lije, who should have lingered
here, A-plowin' corn for many a year, Is lyin' where the daisies grow Because a woman laid him low.

Doc. Bolus gives a little cough When asked what 'twas that took
Lije off.
"Acute gastritis," he replies. But there's a look in Doc's shrewd
eyes Which says he knows as well as me That Lije's woman, foolishly, Hastened the end of that pore man By swattin' with the fryin' pan.

She didn't biff him on the head, And yet Elijah Brown lies dead; She didn't play the strong-arm game, But sure and deadly was her aim; A solar-plexus blow she dealt,
It took him jist below the belt Though not so vital as the heart, The stummick plays a needful part.

She never bore Lije no ill will, But you've all heard that love can
kill,
Though some may doubt the fiendish darts
That lurk in culinary arts. Victuals she fried three times a day,
For fryin' was that woman's way; Goose grease and taller, oil and fat

'Twould give dyspepsy to a cat.

She never baked nor broiled nor

stewed,

No matter what the kind of food;

Though fresh or canned, though

green or dried,

The woman allus served it fried,

Twas fried pertaters and fried meat,

Fried eggs, fried hash, fried mush to

eat,

Fried pancakes

doughboys

sometimes called

Until poor Lije's stummick stalled.

And so the Baptist choir tonight Is practicln' Leau, Kindly Light," Ant' seen,- a'nv^t, by listenin' sharp, You'd hear Lije ^ryin' out his harp, If I'd the makin' of the laws, Then pizen rules should have a
clause To put a skull-and-crossbones ban On every cussed fryin' pan.

Oh, gentle housewife, lend an ear To this sad tale, let wholesome fear Of God's command your conscience
fill, He wisely said: "Thou shalt not kill."

Young Pines

Attract Tip Moths

Young pines less than ten feet tall are often attacked by pine tip moths. These insects lay eggs near the terminal buds of small pines.
The hatching larvae bore in the bud, killing it and forcing the tree to sprout new growth. This results in slower height growth and unsightly trees.
Contact your county agent for additional information.
LETTUCE AND TOMATOES
Next to tomatoes, lettuce is probably the most popular fresh vegetable on U. S. menus. But unlike most other fresh vegetables, consumption of lettuce per person has increased slowly but steadily over the past 50 years.

Lynn Sands

Bill White

State winners in the 1974 State 4-H Cotton Bill competition which took place recently at Atlanta's Perimeter Mall were Bill White of Fulton county and Lynn Sands of Evans county. The unusual fashion contest, sponsored by the Georgia Agricultural Commodity Commission for Cotton, attracted 1,030 Four-H participants across the state. Normally, fashion events are
based solely in fashion. But not at the Cotton Boll activity. Here contestants were judged heavily on how their outfits suited their lifestyles. And judging from the marked differences in apparel, lifestyles varied considerably.
