FIP Catching
On In Georgia
A program to increase timber pro-
duction nation-wide is being well
received by forest landowners in
Georgia.
The Forestry Incentives Pro-
gram (FIP) provides financial
assistance to
qualified land-
owners who wi-
sh to plant
trees or impro-
ve their timber
stands. More th-
an 750 landow-
ners have ap-
plied for FIP
_
as of May 15.
Cost-sharing will be 75% of the
cost of preparing the land and plan-
ting the trees up to $70 per acre. The
field program is under the super-

vision of the Georgia Forestry Commission for approving field practices and technical assistance.
Any private landowner, group, association, or corporation owning less than 500 acres of non-industrial forest land is eligible for cost-sharing payments. However, no landowner can receive more than $2,500 per calendar year under the program.
This will be a continuing program. The federal budget for 1975 contains two and a half times the amount of money as received in 1974. Any landowner who does not get his application for 1974 should go ahead and apply for 1975.
Landowners who qualify and are interested in receiving assistance in improving their timber stands should contact their county ASCS office, county extension agent, or their local forestry office for more information.
NEW SOY CONCENTRATE
Ninety-four percent of the protein and 85 percent of the oil in soybeans
is retained in a new soy concentrate developed for use in beverages and formulated foods.
Soy beverages are used in many parts of the world to prevent protein deficiency in the diets of babies and children. Milk production in developing countries is often
inadequate to meet nutritional needs, and supplies of nonfat dry milk for
world distribution are declining. In the United States, soy milk is used for feeding babies who are allergic to cow's milk.
The new soy concentrate produced by the ARS process reconstitutes in
water to a smooth, light-colored, bland base.
A wide variety of high-quality beverages or formulated foods can be produced by adding minerals,
vitamins, and flavor ingredients.

New Opportunity Growing Forages
Summertime Problems On Way For Ga. Gardeners, Homeowners
Summertime temperatures and soil moisture conditions have arrived. With these come some of the woes which beset gardeners.
Forage crops are the primary source of feed for the cow-calf and the growth period of stocker cattle. Traditionally, the yearling has been placed in a confined feeding area and fed a high grain mixture to produce a desirable slaughter animal.
Feed grains are now in great demand world wide for direct consumption by humans. This has caused the price of teed grains to increase to the point that conventional methods of feeding cattle may no longer be profitable or possible in some situations.
Forage crops may be the answer for supplying desirable meat protein in the future.
Evidence of cattle being fed to desirable slaughter quality with
forages and or forages plus some grain is found in research work conducted by University of Georgia Agriculture Scientist at several different locations.
Some plus factors for feeding on pasture may be less labor, less air and water pollution, less fly problems and no manure handling. All of these factors influence the cost of beef to the consumer.
Milk Production
Down in Georgia
The Georgia Crop Reporting Service estimated milk production on Georgia farms in 1973 to be 1,163 million pounds 6 percent below the 1,235 million pounds produced in 1972. The average number of milk cows on Georgia farms during 1973 was 136,000. This was also a 6 percent drop from a year ago.
/n-Befween Peanuts
Are you watching your diet? Try low-calorie peanuts as an in-between meal snack. Processing removes a large percentage of the oil and threefourths of the calories, leaving the peanut with its excellent flavor and high protein content.
Kudzu - Imported Legume
Now Poses Grave Problem
Landowners have recently bombarded us with requests for information on the easiest and best methods to use to eradicate kudzu from their pastures, fields and forestlands. Kudzu, an imported perennial legume, has become a grave problem for many farmers and home-owners.
Flowering Plants
Need Special Care
How do you choose plants for your flower garden? Probably the wrong way.
"Most people look for the plants with flowers, which is a mistake," says Cooperative Extension horticulturist Doug Crater. "The ideal plant is the one just getting ready to bloom the one still in the bud stage.
"Flowering plants go through a cycle," Crater explains. "From vegetative growth to budding to flowering, then into seed production. After this the cycle starts over.
Another thing to remember buy plants with dark green, healthy leaves.
Kudzu was originally recommended to landowners for grazing and erosion control. Unfortunately, it isn't worth the after-effects it causes in the majority of instances. It's another sad case of a foreign plant being brought into the United States and taking over the landscape because it doesn't have very many natural enemies, therefore making it stronger and more tolerant than the native flora.
An effective cultural control is continued heavy grazing. It can be
eradicated by continual overgrazing. However, in order to accomplish this, it must be completely surrounded by a fence. For if it is allowed to cross the fence it spreads quickly to fields and other areas where it is not wanted.
If allowed too close to buildings, it

Unless vegetable gardens, flower beds and planters are thoroughly watered each week, they will wilt in the drier areas of the state.
Trees and shrubs transplanted during the winter and early spring may be in trouble. This is particularly true where gardeners do not have a regular watering schedule.
Newly transplanted dogwood trees are a good example. These young trees in most cases were correctly transplanted. Some leafed out in early spring. Some larger trees even produced a few flowers. Now the leaves have developed a scorched look on the margins. The foliage has wilted. This is a moisture problem.
It is important to remember that dogwood trees have a limited root system. Young trees dug from nurseries and sold in retail outlets have a reduced root system because of digging.
If nurserymen dug soil balls large enough to retain most of the roots, it
would make the cost of the plant beyond most gardeners' reach. Consequently, trees are dug and sold with about two-thirds of their root system intact. For this reason some of the small branches should be removed at transplanting. This will help achieve a balance between the reduced root system and the leafproducing stems.
To overcome or prevent wilt, take these precautions: Be careful at planting time. Prune as needed. Thoroughly water and mulch the plants. In late spring, summer and fall, keep your garden hose handy. A slow stream of water, rain-like drops from a sprinkler or a soil soaker is best.
Remember, it may take two or three hours to thoroughly moisten the soil through the root zone. And it may be necessary to repeat the watering at four- to five-day intervals during hot weather.
The first year after transplanting is important for trees, shrubs and vines. Your success or failure may be determined during this time.
Mulching Plants Beneficial, Easy
It is easy to do, costs very little money and is very beneficial, yet it is one of the most neglected practices in the culture of flowers and shrubs in Georgia.
It's called mulching and it consists of nothing more than spreading two or three inches of material, like pine straw or peanut hulls, around the base of the plants.
A mulch can reduce weed seed germination, prevent crusting of the soil surface, and moderate soil temperatures. But the most useful effect of a mulch is that it reduces loss of moisture from the soil.

Dear Editor:
When I was in Norway last summer, I visited the Viking Ships which had been dug out of mounds. Among the perfectly preserved artifacts was a bread tray - a huge one - in which the Viking sailors made bread for the crew. The design was EXACTLY like the picture of the bread trays which was in the BULLETIN several months ago. A design that has endured for 2,000 years should not be retired!

Blue Sailors, Garden Endive or Succory - whatever name you prefer - Chicory is almost as valuable to man as are dandelions. While this statement may seem incongruous, these plants are beneficial to man's health and when returned to the soil as compost add back to the land what they have taken away.
Chicory greens are an excellent source of vitamin A and are easily recognized as the leaves are toothed like the dandelion. Two main physical differences in chicory and dandelion are the bright blue flower heads of the former which are very large when fully open compared to the small compact yellow blooms of the latter as well as dandelions being a low growing plant and chicory reaching a height of three feet. Chicory flowers open and close at specific daily intervals with such regularity that they have been used in sundial gardens to tell time.
Most folks have tasted coffee with chicory. Actually chicory is an adulterant or filler in coffee and to many lends a bitter taste to the brew. The fleshy taproot can also be eaten as a tasty vegetable when served with butter.
Medicinally, chicory has been used as an all-purpose tonic but primarily as a stimulant to the liver and kidneys. Boil down 1 ounce of root in one quart water until the liquid is reduced to 11/4 pints. This liquid is also excellent as a lotion for skin disorders.
Chicory is usually found in light, sandy soil, wastelands and fields. The roots are quite long and make the plant difficult to transplant. It is usually propagated from seeds which should be sown in the spring.

Kud zu

For further and more complete information on the kudzu problem, landowners are urged to contact your county agent or the local forestry unit for up-to-date advice.
WATER WASTE Never let faucets drip. One drop per second adds up to 700 gallons of water a year, according to home economists with the Cooperative Extension Service.

I just received some running okra seeds. Is running okra edible as is regular okra', or is it just ornamental?
J. M., Stone Mountain
Our Seed Specialist advises that running okra is a Luffa often referred to as running okra, dishrag gourd or vegetable sponge. It is actually a member of the gourd family. The vines are similar to many of the other gourds and its fruit, and when allowed to fully mature, produce a fiberous spongelike interior. The pods of this plant can be eaten if they are harvested while young.

We planted some Great Northern soup beans in our garden and would like to know the best time to harvest them; also how to store them.
Mrs. C. H., Ringgold
When the seed pods mature on your Great Northern Beans, you can pick them off individually as they mature and allow them to dry or you can leave the pods on the plant until all of the pods are mature and make one picking, which is the way these beans are normally harvested by mechanical means. You will have better quality beans and be able to save all of them by picking the beans off individually as they mature. After these beans have fully dried, you can shell and store them. We do not believe that you will have any problem with insects in the beans but you should make certain they are completely dry before placing them in any air tight container, such as glass jars, for storage.
