Georgia World
Congress Center
Agriculture is Georgia's largest industry, and the $35-million George L. Smith II Georgia World Congress Center (GWCC) will serve as a vehicle to remind citizens of the state, nation and other countries of this great industry.
The GWCC will advertise Georgia's industries, tourist at-
tractions and agricultural products through its permanent display area, the Georgia Products Hall, which will fe ature exhibits on poultry, livestock and farm
machinery, as well as, textiles and other manufactured goods produced in the state.
Hundreds of people a day, from visiting foreign dignitaries to Georgia school children, will view

these exhibits and learn about our state's continuing contribution to this nation's wealth.
By bringing national and international conventions and trade shows to Georgia, the GWCC will enable Georgia's farmers and businessmen to display their products and merchandise and to learn about innovations in agriculture and industry.
The governing body of the GWCC is an authority comprised of twenty men appointed by the Governor, the President of the Senate and the Speaker of the House.
The Center will have 350,000 square feet of exhibit space, approximately 50 meeting rooms, a 2,000 seat auditorium, and adequate restaurant facilities to feed the many visitors who attend meetings there.
Construction is scheduled to begin this fall and the Center should be open in late 1976. The Authority will lease the facility to private parties who will operate and maintain it.
The Center is designed for the citizens of Georgia to advertise their products, to accommodate their meetings and to add revenue to their state budget. The Georgia World Congress Center will bring the world to Geogia's doorstep.

Coming July 3. Deadline for notices is June 26. This includes listings for July, August and September.
Nitrogen Problem
Gets Some Relief
A shortage of nitrogen fertilizer which has threatened Georgia farmers with losses approaching disaster, has been partially alleviated, "but we are not out of the woods yet," Commissioner of Agriculture Tommy Irvin said last week.
Some relief came when Columbia Nitrogen Corporation of Augusta, and Kaiser Agricultural Chemical Company of Savannah, were able to divert some shipments to the state's critical areas, particularly those where crops are ready for side dressing.
The supply of fertilizer is down some 10 to 15 percent in most areas of the state and as much as 40 percent in others. The combined efforts of the companies which had delegates at a meeting called by Irvin, indicate, according to a survey, that the situation may be relieved as much as 35 percent.
Hardest hit, apparently, are some 25 corn producing counties in south Georgia where the magnitude of the problem left farmers with no alternative but to start plowing up some of the acreage. That prospect poses a threat to the production of pork, beef, poultry and eggs due to a lack of grain.
BEEF INTAKE DOUBLES
We are eating almost twice as much beef per person as 20 years
The Georgia Cooking Contest to choose a representative for the national cook-off was held in the Georgia Power Building at the Rock Eagle 4-H Center, Eatonton, last
week. The contest, sponsored by the
Georgia Department of Agriculture, the Georgia Poultry Processors and the Georgia Poultry Federation, was won by the only male finalist, Mr. Durward Key of Atlanta.
Judges included Dr. Barbara Greene from the University of Georgia School of Home Economics, Dr. George Schuler from the Cooperative Extension Service, and Mrs. Jean Thwaite with the
Atlanta Constitution.
Commissioner of Agriculture Tommy Irvin presented prizes of: fruit boxes from the Atlanta Farmers Market; cookware from the Atlanta Gas Light Company; leaf prints from the C & S Bank; bag of Georgia products from the Georgia Commodities Commissions; two water pitchers from the Georgia Farm Bureau Insurance Company; electric frying pans for each contestant from the Georgia Power Company; $50 cash certificate from Gold Kist; pen and pencil set from Rich's Department Store; radio from Sears, Roebuck and Company; and an electric mixer from the Washington County Electric Membership Corporation.
Pictured above from left to right are the finalists: Mrs. Horace K. Sawyer, Jr., Atlanta (first runnerup); Mrs. Eycke Strickland, Decatur; Mrs. L. W. Rhodes, Albany; Mrs. Harriet Hill, Powder Springs; Mr. Durward Key, Atlanta (winner); Mrs. Betty Sikes, Springfield; Mrs. Hazel Walters, Hartwell; Mrs. Kathleen Willis, Lithonia; Mrs. Jackie Rhame, Atlanta.
(Chicken Quiche, the winning recipe appeared in May 22nd issue of Market Bulletin. Chicken Marmalade, the 1st runner up appears on page 5.

Roses That Change
Into Blackberries
Occasionally we hear of gardeners complaining that one of their rose bushes has changed into a blackberry. There is a logical explanation for this situation.
All the named varieties of roses that we buy have been grafted onto a vigorous understock usually the multiflora rose. Occasionally a bud will be produced on the underground stem of the multiflora rose below the graft union. The growth from this bud will, of course, be multiflora and not the variety which was purchased.
Since the multiflora rose has leaves that resemble blackberries and also produces clusters of small white blossoms that resemble the flowers of this plant, it is easy to understand why this new growth may be mistaken for a blackberry bush.
The "sucker" growth, as this understock growth is called, can be distinguished from the hybrid tea rose by the light green color of the multiflora as contrasted with the usual dark green of the hybrid tea.
Also, as may be noted in the photograph, the hybrid tea rose, which is on the (eft, has 5 leaflets while the multiflora, on the right, has 7 leaflets.
The growth of the multiflora sucker is usually quite vigorous and is likely to affect the growth of the planted named variety. The sucker should, therefore, be removed as soon as it is noted. The best approach is to dig the soil away from the main stem until the base of the sucker is evident. Then it can be cut off flush with the underground stem.

Dear Editor: I saw in last week's MARKET BULLETIN that jars from
products purchased at the store were not suitable for home canning. I have been using these kind of jars for 40 years, and have had good results.
The regular flats and rings are used on the regular size and there is a smaller size you can buy to fit the smaller mouth jars. Don't throw away any. Use them.
Mrs. Pauline Smith Rt. 1, Box 144 Royston, Georgia 30662
(Editor's Note: I, too, know of many people, my mother and aunt included, who regularly use jars from certain products to do their home canning. However, they are not recommended by the extension home economists as they will occasionally break or not seal properly. Those of you who are more experienced may wish to continue to use them but the editors felt they should not be recommended for inexperienced canners.)

There are four traditional fine herbs: tarragon, parsley, chives and chervil. Chervil is little known in this country but is used extensively in Europe. The curly and very finely cut leaves are used primarily in soups and salads and as a garnish.
Sweet Cicely is often confused with chervil. The main difference is that chervil is an annual sweet cicely is a perennial. Chervil leaves look a great deal like fennel and parsley but have a more distinct anise-like flavor.
The curled chervil is the most popular variety as it is decorative as well as useful. Chervil reaches a height of 1 to 2 feet and produces clusters of white flowers. To encourage fuller plants and more foliage, the flower heads should be cut before blooming.
As a member of the carrot family, chervil has a long fleshy root which can be eaten as a vegetable. When boiled, these roots are aromatic and carrot-like in flavor.
There are few medicinal properties attributed to chervil. Perhaps the most interesting one is its use as an ancient hiccup remedy: crush 1 tsp. chervil seed in 1/2 cup vinegar and gargle!

Garden Color Easily Achieved
Most gardeners want color, but would prefer plant material that required little maintenance. There is no maintenance-free flowering material, but some plants are much easier to maintain than others.
Roses, while very popular, require frequent spraying or dusting. Most annuals also must be cared for in terms of weeding, watering and insect control.
One excellent source of summer color is daylilies. This plant is easy to grow, and if planted in good soil, needs very little care with the exception of dividing large clumps every three to five years.
Cannas also provide much color during the summer with a minimum of maintenance.

The Georgia Commission for the national Bicentennial Celebration and the Georgia Forestry Commission are jointly sponsoring a Liberty Tree Planting, Monday, June 10th, in 35 communities across Georgia. The trees are being called Liberty Trees due to the fact that early day patriots met and discussed their cause under trees which they themselves dubbed Liberty Trees. The Georgia Forestry Commission is providing a live oak, Georgia's state tree, or swamp chestnut oak to the communities. Contact your local forestry unit for planting locations in your area. The line oak pictured above is located in YVaycross.

I am going to Michigan this fall and I may purchase some horses. I would like to know what steps I would have to take to bring these animals into this state.
E. S., College Park
Our Department requires the following: 1. A health certificate issued in
the origin state by an accredited, licensed Veterinarian. 2. Temperatures
must be shown on the health certificate for each animal of equine origin.
3. All equines shall be tested for Equine Infectious Anemia in a
recognized laboratory within 30 days prior to importation into Georgia,
and must be negative to the Coggins Test. These results shall be recorded
on the health certificate.

Will you please advise how to store Irish potatoes? Mrs. H. P., Jonesboro
Mr. James Barber, Extension Horticulturist in Tifton, advises that
spring potatoes, due to their high moisture^content, are not usually stored
or held for a long period of time. Potatoes that are free from serious
bruising and decay can be held four to five months at 40 degrees F. if they
are cured for five days or longer at 60 to 70 degrees before storage. They
can be stored two to three months at 50 degrees without curing. Since
these storage temperatures are not usually available, the next best thing is
to store them in a cool, dry place with as good air circulation as possible.
It is also best to store them in the absence of light since light will cause
the potatoes, particularly white varieties, to turn green. One or two mon
ths is probably as long as they can be stored without shriveling or
sprouting at common storage temperatures. If you have ample freezer
space, it would be good to properly prepare and freeze any excess over a
month or two supply.

I am sending you a sample from a plant that I found growing in the pine
forest. Can you tell me if it is poisonous? Is it a house plant?
R. M. Newborn
Our sources reveal that the plant is Chimaphila maculata (L.) Pursh
(Pipsissewa or spotted wintergreen). Kingsbury, (Poisonous Plants of the
United States and Canada), does not list this genus. There are a number of
members of the same family (Ericaceae) which are' poisonous however. It
could probably be grown inside the house, but it is not considered a com
mon florist item.

I have a tree peony that is three years old and has never bloomed. What can I do to make it bloom?
S. M., Unknown
There could be several reasons for tree peonies not blooming. They
could be planted too deep, might not get enough sun or could be planted too far south to bloom. Peonies require planting not any further south than Griffin, need good drainage, and should be buried halfway up the scion in an area that gets partial shade. Use manure fertilizer and com mercial fertilizers sparingly.
