Farm Survey
Vital To Farmers
Whether U. S. farmers have responded to the call for all-out production in 1974 will first be indicated by our June acreage, livestock and labor survey.
Our June Survey always provi des the first hard facts about
planied acreages in every growing season, but things being what they are this year, the su.rvey has tak-
n on special | importance.
The farmers who provide us with information about their crops and livestock will also be providing us key elements that will eventually help answer
(Our guest columnist this week is Frasier T. Galloway, Statistician in Charge, Georgia Crop Reporting Service, 1861 West Broad Street, Athens 30601.)_____________
some of the most important questions being asked in the Nation today: How large will the 1974 feed grain and soybean crops be? Will there be enough to meet expanding demand?
While the main emphasis of the June survey is to gather data on crop acreages as a foundation for forecasting production, there are questions in the survey on numbers of cattle and hogs. These livestock questions are quite significant in that they enable us to update mid-year inventory numbers and gauge the possible level of marketings during the second half of 1974 and early 1975.
The Georgia farmers who will be interviewed for the June survey are part of a sample of nearly 70,000 scattered throughout the Nation who were randomly chosen to represent a cross-section of U. S. agriculture. Representatives from the Department of Agriculture will talk with each farmer individually. Additional details will come from mail responses of other producers. However, all responses are kept confidential and only State, regional, and national summaries will be released.
Data from the survey will begin being released on June 21, when the Crop and Livestock Reporting Board in Washington, D. C. will issue new hog and pig estimates. July 11 is the date set for release of the all-important Crop Production Report which will give everyone the first look at what kind of a year 1974 is likely to be.
Due to a paper shortage we were unable to print a 12 page Bulletin this week. If your ad was left out, do not resubmit as we will publish it next week. The Editors.

Planting Time
For Soybeans
"Research has shown that the optimum planting dates for soybeans in Georgia are from May 1 to May 15," says Bill Segars, Cooperative Extension Service agrpnomist for soybeans.
Segars explains that soybeans require approximately 14 and onehalf hours of daylight a day to prevent them from attempting to set flowers. In Georgia, the days aren't that long until May 10.
Area Meetings Scheduled During May
For Segregation 3 Peanut Producers
Eight area meetings over the peanut belt will be held during the month of May to explain the basic fundamentals of a proposed self-help indemnification program for producers of Segregation 3 peanuts in Georgia.
Poultry Federation Elects President
Perry McCranie, Jr., Tifton, was elected President of the Georgia Poultry Federation at its Annual Meeting held recently.
Serving on the Executive Committee with McCranie will be the immediate past president, Howard Parker, Dalton, and three vicepresidents: Lee Arrendale, Gainesville; Ed Houston, Lumber City; and Bill Schimmel, Athens.
Georgia Farm Bureau President Emmett Reynolds (left) congratulates Larry and Phyllis Tucker, of Smithville, after winning one of three Young Farmer of the Year awards at the American Farm Bureau Federation's annual convention.________________
The program, drafted by officials of the Peanut Commission, Georgia Farm Bureau Federation, and the Georgia Department of Agriculture, is subject to approval by the state's 22,000 peanut growers whose Segre-
gation 3, peanuts (those that have visible aspergillus-flavus mold) will not be eligible for government price supports in 1974.
J. R. Odom, Chairman of the Peanut Commission, says the proposal is being offered in response to numerous requests from growers, grower groups, and a resolution submitted by the Farm Bureau Federation's Peanut Committee last fall.
Before the indemnification (or insurance) program could be set into motion, 51 percent (or a majority) of the state's peanut growers who produce 51 percent of the state's production would have to approve the measure in a referendum.
If the plan is approved by the
required majority, growers would
be assessed up to $5.50 per ton of
peanuts to be placed into a base
fund. These funds would then be
used to indemnify producers of
Segregation 3 peanuts up to the ef-
fective 1973 price support level
which was support less a $50 per
ton penalty.
Two alternative plans of financing the program are under discussion, Odom says, and these will be outlined at the eight area meetings.
All growers are urged to attend the meeting in their area in order that they can become acquainted with the proposed program.
Dates and locations of the eight meetings are:
May 14: Rural Development Center, Tifton; May 15: Courthouse, Camilla; May 16: American Legion Hall, Blakely; May 20: Courthouse, Waynesboro; May 21: National Guard Armory, Dawson; May 22: Courthouse, Vienna; May 23: Laurens County Agricultural Center, Dublin; and May 29: Bulloch County Agricultural Center, Statesboro. The meetings will be held at 8:30 p.m.
Representatives of the Georgia Poultry Federation, Georgia Poultry Feed Council, Georgia Department of Agriculture, and University of Georgia Extension Service met in Atlanta last week to discuss the possibility of increased testing of feed ingredients. Left to right are, first row: Elmo Winstead, Department of Agriculture; Howard Parker, Immediate Past President, Georgia Poultry Federation; Commissioner Tommy Irvin; Jim Brock, President, Georgia Poultry Feed Council and Dr. Wayne McWard, Director, Feed Council. Standing are: Harry Johnson, Department of Agriculture; Cecil Spooner, Department of Agriculture; Abit Massey, Federation Executive Director; Dr. Bill Adams, Director, Georgia Poultry Labs; Dr. John Shutze, Extension Poultry Head; and Dr. O. W. Charles, Extension Poultryman.
Commissioner Irvin told the group the Department would step up its monitoring of fats and animal proteins and work with the group in evaluating the total situation. An additional meeting is planned at the Department of Agriculture Building on May 9.
New Record Highs
For Livestock
The sale of livestock, poultry, livestock and poultry products brought Georgia farmers $1,160,700,000 in 1973 according to the Georgia Crop Reporting Service. All species except sheep and lambs and wool set new record highs. Comparisons with 1972 are as follows: Broilers up $151 million to $365 million, eggs up $100 million to $259 million, hogs up $62 million to $182 million, and caitle and calves up $54 million to $231 million.

What
Medieval literature claims that borage gives strength to the heart, courage and joyfulness to anyone who eats the leaves. The plant is native to Asia Minor and has been popular in European history, especially during the reign of Queen Elizabeth.
Borage is a member of the forgetme-not family of which there are over 2,000 species. The beautiful star-shaped blue flowers are the most characteristic physical quality while the cucumber taste and smell of the leaves are the valuable part of the plant.
The gray-green leaves which are 4 to 6 inches long are covered with small grayish hairs which are lost in cooking. They are nibbled fresh in the garden, added to spring salad bowls, used as a garnish and even cooked with some vegetables, such as cauliflower. Since many people like the delicate taste of cucumbers but do not enjoy the accompanying side-effects, borage leaves are often substituted.
Besides its culinary value, borage reputedly is an excellent source of potassium, calcium and other natural minerals. The juice of borage is said to be soothing to the stomach and borage tea has been used to bathe sore inflamed eyes. Borage is a safe plant, no part of which has been found to be harmful to humans.
Also known as star-flower, beebread and common bug loss, borage is a very easy to grow annual. It requires a sunny location and ordinary garden soil. It is necessary to make successive plantings of the seed, as borage will flower 4 weeks after sowing. As is true for most herbs, the leaves should be picked before the plant blooms. Blooming tends to make the leaves coarser and less appetizing.
