Better Seed-
Better Crops
The Georgia Seedsmen's Association is an organization of commercial seed growers, processors, wholesale distributors, retail seed and farm supply dealers. We are a non-profit, non-political trade association.
Since our organization in 1941, our purpose is to be an
important part of Georgia agriculture, furnishing seeds of high quality and adaptability to help Georgia farmers and home gardeners produce better crops. We are deeply concerned with the availability and supply of good seed for 1974 planting season. On the survey that I have done, it seems there will be adequate supply of corn seed for the anticipated

acreage, but possibly not in the most popular varieties. Some will have to plant varieties not to their preference but will be approved and a good hybrid adapted to one's particular area.
Some suppliers feel there will be limited supplies of 80% germinating cottonseed for the season. Most will be in the 70% range. As for adequate supplies, they are probably there, but no one seems to know, at this writing, just how much acreage is going to be planted.
We believe, generally speaking, there will be ample supplies of soybeans available for the crop to be planted, and of good quality.
Apparently there will be ample supply of peanuts even though some suppliers report that they have already sold out.
It seems that garden seed will be the most item in short supply this year.
In general, everyone should be aware of persons taking advantage of persons capitalizing on the demand with seed of poor quality and varieties of unknown origin and adaptation.
Wheat Production
Wheat production in Georgia from the 1974 crop is projected at 65.9 per cent higher than last year's crop.
The Georgia Crop Reporting Service indicates the state's wheat plantings are expected to total 215,000 acres or an increase of 30 per cent more than that of 1973 but still 10,000 acres lower than plantings for 1972 harvest.

Grocery Fined
After Hearing
Commissioner of Agriculture Tommy Irvin Friday fined Alewine Grocery of 1913 Hollywood Road, N. W., Atlanta, $1,600 following a hearing on charges of deceptive trade practices.
The fine was levied in lieu of revocation of the Food Sales Establishment License issued by the Department.
The Department's investigation and the resulting hearing followed complaints from regular customers and the purchase of meat products by Department inspectors for checking and testing in Department laboratories.
Greenhouse Tomatoes May Be Risky Venture
Growing greenhouse tomatoes is not a business for amateurs.
Neither is it a good sideline operation to supplement the family income, warns James M. Barber, horticulturist of the University of Georgia Cooperative Extension Service.
Greenhouse tomato production now being advocated in many quarters is an extremely risky adventure, and that growers fail more often than they succeed.
The greenhouses require a considerable investment, and that operating costs are high.
Anyone interested in growing tomatoes or other vegetables in greenhouses should contact his county extension agent for the latest, unbiased research information before making any definite plans.
National Leader
Georgia continues its national leadership in tree farm acreage. Behind Georgia are Alabama Florida, Oregon and Louisiana. In number of tree farms, Georgia is fourth with 2,018. Mississippi has the most farms with 4,245.
Winged Enemies Attacking!
Protect Home, Farm Buildings
Some people don't find out about their termite problem until their foot goes through the floor. Around 90 per cent of all wood structure buildings in
Georgia have had, now have or will have termites.
Beware of the individual with no identification card and an unmarked truck. All employees of reputable, licensed pest control companies are required by state law to carry state issued identification cards showing their name, signature, picture, and the name and address of the company they represent. Trucks and other mobile equipment must be lettered to show the name of the company, the pest control license number, and the town in which it is located. If there is any doubt that a company is licensed, contact the Entomology Division of the Georgia Department of Agriculture before allowing the work to be done.
The Department of Agriculture makes periodic inspections of work performed by each licensed pest control company to determine if the required state minimum standards are met. All work is not checked routinely, but any requests for inspection or complaints received by the Department are fully investigated. When corrections or additional work is found to be necessary, the company involved is notified and required to return and bring the job up to the standards and in accordance with the contract.
ANTENNA ELBOWED
These pests, when uncontrolled, can eat away floors and walls in a few years time.
This is the time of year when the termites emerge and swarm to do their damage.
A careful inspection is necessary to determine if the pests are laying siege to your home.
Anywhere wood is close to the soil is an important place to look.
Ants are often mistaken for termites. Ants have two pairs of transparent wings of unequal size and have a waist smaller than the rest of the body. Termites have thick waists and wings of equal length. Also, the ants' antennae are elbowed and the termites' are not. Extension offices have information on do-it-yourself exterminating for those who wish to try it. If the soil treatment is disturbed by the addition of a new room, carport or an excavation, the area involved should be retreated.
To help prevent termites from ruining your home, remove all wood debris from along the foundation walls and make sure wooden structures, such as dog houses, are away from both the ground and the home.
Don't put off having your house checked. You may think you can't afford to have your house sprayed when actually you probably can't afford not to.

Six 4-H'ers Represent Go.
Only a portion of the damage done by recent storms at the Atlanta Farmers Market in Forest Park is shown here. The storms caused damage in excess of $40,000 to market officials and Georgia farmers. Transformers were knocked down, trucks were overturned and produce scattered.
Six young Georgians have been selected to attend the 44th Annual 4H Conference in Washington, D. C.
During their stay in the nation's capital, April 20-25, the delegates will study federal departments and agencies concerned with youth and determine how federal resources can be used to strengthen 4-H programs.
The six, selected to represent some 161,000 Georgia 4-H'ers : are Lynn Sands, Daisy; Tommy Thomas, Hahira; Burton McDaniel, Rossville; Claire Hamby, Jersey; James Plunkett, Conyers, and Lynn Harper, Wray.

Dear Editor:
Reference is made to the recipe for Rose Petal Sweetmeat, on page 5 of the March 20, 1974 issue of The MARKET BULLETIN.
The use of rose petals from roses which have been sprayed or treated in anyway with chemicals can cause severe sickness to anyone consuming them in sweetmeat or jellies.
Recommend that readers of the MARKET BULLETIN be cautioned to use ONLY rose petals from roses which HAVE NOT been subjected to chemicals.

What 31
It may be difficult to understand how this plant is considered a herb since it grows to an average height of 6 feet, leaf length of 2 feet and, although exotic in appearance, is indigenous to Iceland.
Since most plants that do not develop woody tissue are considered herbs, however, Angelica meets the qualification as well as having rich history of folklore, medicinal attributes and limited use in cooking.
Angelica is thought to have been brought to earth by the angels as a cure to the plague in the 15th and 16th centuries. It was also thought to ward off evil spells and witches.
The seeds, leaves and roots of Angelica have been prepared as a tonic for stomach pain, heartburn, colds and fever. One ounce of Angelica leaves to 1 1/4 pints boiling water supposedly makes a tea to cure practically anything.
The culinary aspects of Angelica have not been exploited too much, but is ocasionally used to flavor cakes and candies. The roots can be boiled and eaten like celery.

Peach Committee
Named For Georgia
The USDA has appointed eight members and their alternates to the Georgia Peach Industry Committee, which recommends regulations to be issued under the federal marketing agreement and order covering the handling of fresh peaches grown in Georgia.
The marketing agreement and order was developed at the request of growers and handlers to establish grade and size regulations, and to set minimum standards of quality and maturity for peaches marketed in interstate commerce.
The members and alternates were nominated by Georgia peach growers. They will serve a one-year term ending Feb. 28, 1975.

Would you please identify this insect and tell me if there is any way to control it in my dogwood trees. I have tried to cut the infected limbs as high as I can reach; they all have these bugs on them.
Mrs. C. S., Folkston
The insect has been identified by our Plant Division as Xylosandrus compactus, (no common name). This is a new insect to Georgia, having been found recently damaging dogwoods, magnolias and redwoods. The only control at present is to cut off and destroy the infested twigs; the in sect usually damages only the sm*al*l *twigs on the trees.
Why can the super markets in Georgia sell ice cream, which is made by a further processing of milk, at a price per half gallon much cheaper than milk itself?
H. I., Monroe
Our Dairy Section provides the information that ice cream is whipped and frozen and about one half of it is air. Also quite often, ice cream is of fered for sale as a loss leader and sold at cost or below in order to get customers into the store to buy other items. Ice cream processors have a premium ice cream and also a cheaper grade of ice cream which is sold at less than the price of whole milk.

A big part of insect and disease control is early detection and action, says the Cooperative Extension Service. Frequent inspections of vegetable fields will keep you informed as to a specific insect or disease problem that may be developing.
INSULATION TIP
A moisture barrier is an essential part of a home insulation system. Most batt and blanket insulations have moisture barriers. But it is often practical to cover the wall studs from the ceiling to the floor with plastic after the batt insulation is installed.
HAVE SOME PRIDE Pride is a new muscadine grape that produces excessively large fruits. The fruit is purple, of good quality and has a good sugar content.
