GCIA Safeguards Seeds Of Georgia
The Georgia Crop Improvement Association is an organization of seed growers, seed processors and others who are interested in growing and making available to the public, through certification, high qual-
ity seeds of superior varieties so grown and distributed as to insure genetic purity and identity. To this end the association receives assistance and cooperates closely with the agricultural units of the University of Georgia and the State Department of Agriculture. Some of the objectives of the Association are as follows: 1. To make available sources of high quality seed from

superior adapted varieties and
hybrids of known origin. 2. To safeguard the purity of seed from varieties developed by our Agricultural Experiment Stations and other qualified
? lant breeders. . To protect purchasers of seed by maintaining an inspection service and approving for certification only those seed that are of high quality. 4. To emphasize and demonstrate the importance and value of using seed of high quality. There are three classes of certified seed (1) Foundation (white tag), (2) Registered (purple tag) and (3) Certified (blue tag). In general, the foundation and registered seed go to seed growers with the certified seed being planted by the general or commercial farmer. The Georgia Crop Improvement Association in 1973 field inspected 88,621 acres of seed crops, of this 84,041 was approved for certification. This acreage involved some twelve crops and sixty-five varieties and hybrids. GCIA has 466 active members and approximately 1,200 seed growers producing seed under contract. The GCIA Board of Directors have approved 76 seed plants to process certified seed. From the 1973 seed production, GCIA will supervise the processing, bagging and labeling of 1,300,000 bags of certified seed. This seed will have a retail value of over $21,000,000. The percent of certified seed available to plant the acreages devoted to the major crops in Georgia is as follows: (1) Peanuts 90%, (2) Cotton - 80%, (3) Hybrid

Agrirama is trying to locate a small rural community church of the period 1870-1899. The church needed for the state supported living museum should be similar architecturally to the one pictured above, with steep-sloped roof, high ceiling, bay window type area on back for the pulpit and overall dimensions of approximately 30' x 50'. After a representative church is selected, it will be moved to the Agrirama site in Tifton, renovated and located in the late 1800's rural village as a symbol of our forefathers' deep religious belief. Any information you have on churches of this nature which could be donated to the Georgia Agrirama, should be made to Dr. Frank King, Georgia Agrirama Development Authority, Coastal Plain Experiment Station, Tifton, Georgia 31794, 912-382-5561.
Mislabeled Seed Shipped To Georgia
A judgment of $1,000 plus court costs for violation of the Federal Seed Act has ended a case against W. R. Grace and Company, Kansas City, Kansas.
The case involved shipments of lettuce, orchardgrass, timothy, oat, Korean lespedeza and crimson clover seed into Georgia, Virginia, and two mid-western states.
Violations included false labeling as to the percentages of germination, pure seed and weed seed, as well as to the number per pound of noxiousweed seeds and the date of test. Other violations of the Act included incomplete labeling as to germination and failure to test for germination within a 5-month period prior to shipment.
The Georgia Department of Agriculture cooperated with the U.S.D.A. in the investigation.

"Million Dollar Baby" On Way For U. S. Cotton Industry
If it can be mass produced, an elongated roundworm may someday turn into a million dollar baby for the U.S. cotton economy.
A new genus of a nematode that parasitizes the boll weevil has been found for the first time in North America. A natural enemy of the boll weevil, it is a wor-
mlike parasite which penetrates the body cavity of the insect and kills it. The nematode causes the weevil to emerge from hibernation abnormally early.
Especially hungry because the parasites have depleted their stored fat, the weevils invade the cotton fields in late March, 4 to 6 weeks before the cotton is planted. Finding no cotton, they die, meanwhile
releasing the female nematodes in the soil to infest later generations of
weevils. Cotton producers across the
nation lose up to $200 million annually because of the boll weevil,
and suppression costs an additional $75 million. Nearly one-third of all

insecticides applied to crops are used to fight the weevil, found nearly 80
years ago in South Texas. Control has depended on in-
secticides, release of sexually sterile male boll weevils, and preventive cultural practices. More recently,
traps have been set in cotton fields to lure boll weevils by means of chemical sex attractants called pheromones.

Georgia Peaches
Georgia has about 40,000 acres planted to peaches. Under favorable conditions, the trees produce about $16 million worth of fruit annually.

Turkey Income
Georgia growers received $11,771,000 gross income from their 1973 production of 1,936,000 turkeys. This was 54 percent more than the $7,639,000 received in 1972.
I960 when ARS entomologist Tomie C. Cleveland found the nematode in weevils collected from ground trash in Madison Parish, Louisiana. Because the specimen was immature, the species was undetermined but thought to be in the genus Hexamermis.
Further research was conducted in 1971 at the former USDA laboratory in Tallulah, Louisiana. Mr.

Dear Editor:
Dressage what is it? If you own a horse you really ought to know.
Your readers have doubtless seen horses listed in the MARKET BULLETIN as dressage horses or prospects. Many people do not know the meaning of the word and others are perplexed by it.
Dressage is a French word which may be literally translated training. Dressage is the classical method of developing the horse's athletic ability, the object being a calm, responsive horse, regardless of any other specialized training he may later receive. Dressage in itself can be practiced to the level of an art (such as with the Spanish Riding School) but is good basic training for any horse.

CRAB APPLES
Crabapples are becoming more popular as small flowering trees for landscape use. Their height at maturity enables them to be used freely around homes having a low profile. Two popular varieties are Dolgo, a whiterflowering upright form, and Floribunda, a spreading type with pink buds opening to reveal white flowers.

Although catnip primarily has the reputation of bringing great joy to felines, it also has been quite valuable to humans in days gone by. Today, it seems that only cats enjoy the effects of catnip, but we who walk on two legs are depriving ourselves of an important herb.
The first recorded use of catnip was as a popular culinary herb. Fresh leaves were rubbed on meats and were also added to early spring salads.
Catnip tea was a common beverage in England long before oriental tea was imported. Although it was often enjoyed for taste alone, it was also credited with relieving gastric distress, reducing fevers, soothing gangled nerves and insuring a good night's sleep.
To prepare catnip tea, use a few more catnip leaves than you would for ordinary tea. Pour boiling water over the leaves and let steep a few minutes. Never boil catnip.
Mountain trappers used catnip leaves to lure cats into their traps as this herb creates an unexplainable reaction in all felines including lions, tigers, civet cats and the household torn.
Catnip is a perennial herb which has naturalized itself throughout the United States. It is a member of the mint family and catnip tea maintains a faint hint of mint flavor.
Early in spring the plant, which may eventually reach a height of three feet, emerges producing many heart-shaped leaves with coarsely toothed margins. The entire plant, leaves and stems, are covered with a fine whitish down giving the plant an overall gray appearance. When the plants are young, they are decorative but as they get older they are stragley and should therefore be planted in back of the garden. Catnip does well in sun or shade.
Gather catnip when the first blooms appear usually about midsummer. Store them in a warm, dry place. When they are dry, crumble and remove all large stems but do not powder. Store catnip in airtight containers in a dry place.
If Captain John Mason who is credited with bringing catnip to America several hundred years ago was living today, he would probably have wondered if it was worth the effort since cats seem to be the only creatures that appreciate the value of this old-fashioned herb.
