Naval Stores
Vital To Georgia
Naval stores have been vital to Georgia's economy since the turn of the century. Gum Naval Stores is produced across the southern section of the United States. Gum producing pines, slash and longleaf are here by nature.
Georgia leads the nation in the production of Gum Naval Stores,
producing more than 80% of the supply.
There is an apparent worldwide shortage of Gum Naval Stores, In spite of a substantial increase in crude gum prjices, the supply has not kept up with the demand and prices paid for crude gum last season was in excess of $60.00 per barrel. It is anticipated that the price will be higher in 1974. During 1973, approximately nine hundred Gum Farmers in
(Our guest columnist this week is Jim L. Gillis, Jr., President, American Turpentine Farmers Association Cooperative, 1204 N. Patterson Street, Valdosta 31601.)
Georgia worked 6,000,000 trees which produced 100,000 barrels crude gum. This yield brought in excess of $6,500,000 to Georgia farmers.
Technological advances in chemical stimulation now permit a reduction in labor of about 50%. Acid paste applied at three week intervals will yield approximately 85% of the Gum normally produced by the application of acid by spray form.
The United States Department of Agriculture has announced a Support Program for Gum Naval Stores in 1974, at a'support level of 41.77 per standard barrel. This is for rosin content only and does not include turpentine. The Commodity Credit Corporation (CCC) loan program has not been used in the last several years, and there are no gum rosin stocks remaining. In 1972 and 1973 over 3 1-/2 million dollars was paid to ATFA Gum Farmer members from profits derived from the sale of CCC loan rosin.
With Gum selling for record prices, with a great demand for Gum Naval Stores products, with an unlimited supply of trees, with an ever decreasing supply stumpwood, and a leveling off of rosin production from pulpwood, it is an excellent opportunity to put Gum Naval Stores in your farm program.
For information, contact a representative of the Georgia Forestry Commission, University of Georgia, Extension County Agent or The American Turpentine Farmers Association Cooperative, Valdosta, Ga. 31601.

A well-tended garden can supply
you and your family with a variety of nutritious, healthful vegetables to be enjoyed fresh or preserved for later use.
When space is limited, a plentiful
supply of such crops as tomatoes, pepper, eggplant, and okra can be grown on a few properly cared for
plants. Plan your garden so that the
available space can be used wisely. For small areas, select those crops that you like best and that will produce an adequate supply on a few plants. Also, plan to use the space continuously.
When a crop has finished producing, plant another crop that is adapted to the particular time of

year. Plant tall growing plants together
on the north or west side so they will not shade lower growing plants.
Make a map and keep it current so that the vegetables can be rotated within the garden from year to year.
In addition, save the map showing last freeze date printed above. Too early planting can cause you to have
a poor stand or lose seed. Always buy good quality seed
from a reputable company. Do not save your own seed or buy "cheap seed."
The variety of seed you purchase is also very important. In next week's
BULLETIN we plan to print a chart showing the various varieties adaptable to your area.

Dairy, Breeding Livestock

May Result In Tax Saving

The proper reporting of dairy and breeding livestock sales on the tax return

can often result in a tax saving. Livestock held for dairy or breeding purposes is

treated as a capital asset when sold. The sale of such livestock can result in a

long-term capital gain, only half of which is taxable. However, to qualify for

long-term capital gains, horses and cattle must be held at least two years; other

types of livestock, such as hogs and sheep, must be held one year.

The capital gains treatment on the considered in computing the gain or

sale of livestock applies to both loss. raised and purchased animals held

for breeding, dairy or draft purposes. On raised livestock that qualifies for capital gains, the selling price

THE MARKET BULLETIN

Wednesday, March 13, 1974

Rosemary is a common perennial herb which has been grown in gardens for centuries. It is a symbol of love and rememberance and was used for decoration in funerals and weddings. Tradition required that a bride wore a sprig of rosemary in her hair and carried it in her wedding bouquet.
As a plant, rosemary is often used in borders and as a houseplant. The lance-shaped leaves are about one inch long and are very narrow. The violet-blue flowers bloom in early spring on upright spikes.
As an outdoor plant, rosemary is tolerant of dry soil conditions, likes a lot of sun and will thrive where other herbs are too tender. If you like your herbs indoors, the soil needs to be kept moist to prevent leaves from shedding.
Rosemary has been used for centuries to flavor soups, meats, breads, salads and vegetables. When the leaves are crushed and used to fill sachets, the sweet aroma will penetrate damp, musty closets and drawers.
