Providing For
Future Ag Needs
Agriculture, the most important industry in this nation and in the world, is continually facing an uphill climb to keep abreast with the population explosion, and with the needs of agriculture related industries to feed the increasing population.
During the last twenty-five years, and especially during
the years that I have served in the General Assembly, we have seen a need for a c o n t i n ued upgrading and revamping o f agriculture laws relating to production, marketing and consumption of agricultural products. The ever-decreasing farm

population has had to keep abreast of this change that has taken place during this period of time.
No longer can we farm like our fathers or our grandfathers, but we have to stay informed on the new technical ways to control insects, control our water supply, and to meet the new trends that are required by the housewife at the market place.
A farmer in this generation almost must have a degree in some phases of agricultural programs if he is able to do some of the things that he must do in producing and marketing agricultural products. This need is so great that the U.S. Congress and the State Legislature have to continually enact laws governing the procedure, and set up the various educational programs to keep these farmers abreast with the times.
In the last fifty or sixty years we have seen more change in America and the world than has ever taken place in all the time up to that time. Then, during this last twenty-five years we have seen agriculture take on an entirely new picture as we use fewer people to produce the food and fiber the world needs. Legislative appropriations, legislation governing environment, ecology, conservation, and forest land marketing, is on a continual rise due to these changes.
Some of the greatest educational programs to prepare young men to take their place in agricultural production has been our FFA and 4H Clubs. Then recently, to continue this high school preparedness to be good farmers, is the Young Farmer program that is being organized at the grassroots level, and is headed by some of our best agricultural leaders at the state level.

Spring Farmland
Edition Coming March 21st.
The Spring Farmland Edition is coming March 21. The deadline for ads received in the FARMERS AND CONSUMERS MARKET BULLETIN office is March 9. Please remember that no realtors, brokers or dealers are allowed to advertise in this edition, only individual farm owners wishing to sell their personal property or wishing to purchase farm property for their own use.
Due to the fact that there were several violations of this ruling in the last farmland edition, notices will be checked carefully in the Real Estate Commission Directory.
Georgia's 83rd anniversary of Arbor Day will be observed February 16, 1973. School children, teachers, garden clubs, agricultural groups, civic and fraternal organizations dedicate this day to recognizing the value of Georgia's vast tree crop. Forests occupy 69 percent of Georgia's land area and provide the raw material for the state's wood using industries. These industries funnel an estimated $1.9 billion a year into Georgia's economy. The Georgia Forestry Commission, with the cooperation of the Georgia Highway Department, will feature a Plant Dig February 17 honoring Arbor Day. Foresters will be available to assist the public in digging plants from a section of wooded area north of Douglasville that is slated to be cleared for 1-20. You will be able to take the seedlings home to plant in your yards. The seedlings will be saved from the bulldozer and will beautify your neighborhood at the same time. For additional information on the Plant Dig, contact your local forestry unit. All Georgians are urged to give attention to this observance and at all times support, aid and take part in the protection, development and perpetuation of the state's timberlands.
Cotton Acreage
Still Available
Georgia cotton producers stand to
lose approximately 7 million dollars income in 1973 by not planting the state's allotted cotton acreage, according to J. Paul Holmes, Jr., State Executive Director, of the Georgia State ASCS Office in Athens.
Reports from counties indicate more than 29,000 acres on 7,000 farms are still available for transfer and planting. The following counties have reported more than 200 acres available for transfer as of January 25th:
Brooks, Bulloch, Coffee, Colquitt, Crawford,, Early, Emanuel, Floyd, Franklin, Grady, Hancock, Jack-son, Laurens, McDuffie, Madison, Meriwether, Miller, Mitchell, Newton, Peach, Pike, Screven,

Dear Editor: To solve the problem of excess leaves without building a
compost bin would have several solutions: Not to rake them up, but to continue to mow the leaves. These small particles would filter down into the grass and build up the organic matter in the soil. Of course, it will not look pretty, but you have to make a choice. Or, rake them up and place the leaves in and around plants and four to five feet solid from the base of the house to edge of the grass area.
Also, I think there are people that are trying to grow grass or the wrong type of grass in a shady location that would look better in a deep 2 to 4 inch of leaf mulch or pine straw of irregular shape.
Another idea would be to rake up the leaves and put them on the vegetable garden site. If you don't have one, start one.

ROTATE VEGETABLES
Crop rotation is the growing of two or more crops in regular sequence on the same land. Extension Service specialists say the practice is a good one for vegetable growers, and for two reasons. First, it helps with insect and disease control. Second, it aids in soil management, in that different crops have different nutrient requirements, and a rotation system prevents one crop from removing large amounts of certain elements.

A date is the fruit of the Phoenix dactylifera, otherwise known as the date palm. This tree only grows in hot climates with relatively low humidity but once the tree is established it often lives to a ripe old age of 200 or more years. The fronds grow into a stiff crown supported by a slender trunk which may be as tall as 100 feet.
Dates are one-seeded berries which grow in large clusters. Until the date clusters turn a yellow-red they are not ripe. Commercially dates are ripened off the tree and dried before packaging.
The history of dates is more than 5,000 years old. They are said to have originated in Arabia, southwestern Asia and parts of Egypt. Nomadic wanderers would not have survived their long journeys through the desert without the handfuls of dates they collected from the date palms on the edge of the wilderness.
The ancient Greeks considered dates as the symbol of light, fertility, and riches. The Hebrews had a legend that the female palm tree wept for her lover until a branch of the male tree was brought to her. Fronds from the date palm are symbolic of Jesus' triumphal entry into Jerusalem on Palm Sunday.
In addition to the valuable food and sustenance derived from dates, the. leaves are woven into roofs, walls, and baskets; the fiber is made into rope; the pitts of the fruit are roasted and brewed similar to coffee. It is no wonder that the date palm is the tree of life to so many.
Date palms are not native to our country but were brought in the late 1700's by Spanish missionaries. Dates, however, were not grown commercially until 1890 in California and Arizona.
Nutritionally speaking, dates are an excellent source of sugar, iron and protein. 3 ounces of pitted dates yields approximately 240 calories.

Future Ag Needs
(Continued from page 1)
Agricultural Calendar
of Georgia held their annual convention at Tifton, and to see some thousand or twelve hundred of these people working together for a common goal and really searching for everything that would help them meet the price squeeze and be better farmers, was a sight to behold.
We, in the General Assembly, especially we who serve on the Agriculture Committee, take our hats off to these young people who are the hope of feeding the world tomorrow.
A lot of us have already seen our day, and without these trained farmer technicians, the world cannot be fed. You cannot take a boy out of the urban areas and take him to the farm and hope to make a successful farmer out of him.
A young man, to do a successful job in agriculture, must be trained from the grassroots. He must love the soil; he must want to make the best better; he must have a desire to see his city cousins fed; and he must have available to him all the technical know-how that our agricultural and educational advisers can give him.
They cannot be hamstrung by laws from Washington that would penalize them, and they cannot have mandates sent down by some of the so-called do-gooders to not do certain things in the production of crops. If the environmentalists and ecology people in Washington could have their way, this country would be hungry in two years. We who serve in the legislative processes of the General Assembly are trying to keep abreast with what is coming out of Washington and trying to enact agricultural legislation that would tend to head off some of these unfair or ridiculous programs that are
being perpetuated on us from those who don t know.
We are extremely proud of these young farmers, and we are glad they chose this kind of work.
In this day in which we live, only 5% of the people are in agriculture, and they can not do the job that they are destined to do if agri-business people and those who till the soil do not work hand in hand to meet the ever increasing demands on the few that serve in agricultural production.

sponsor's products. Ten finalist will be selected from
Georgia to attend the State CookOff. The winner of the Georgia cook-off will go to Little Rock for the National contest. Each national finalist's recipe will appear in the 1973 National Chicken Cooking Contest cookbook which will be available on the national cook-off date.
All Georgia cooks, male or female, enter your chicken recipe. Yours may be the $10,000 recipe!
An official entry blank will be in the Market Bulletin at a future date as time and space permit.
Minimum Germination
Requirement Lowed
The Georgia Crop Improvement Association Executive Committee has lowered the minimum germination requirement on all classes of certified seed of soybeans and cotton from 80 to 70%. Seed germinating below 80%, but not less than 70% will be identified on the certification label with the statement "Germination Sub-standard".
This emergency action was taken due to the unfavorable environmental conditions during the harvesting season of 1972 and the shortage of planting seed of known origin.

( Straight Line
I have recently found two old, yet quite small, cedar trees. One of them is about two feet too tall to be used for Bonsai, and I would appreciate your opinion concerning the possibility of air layering this tree, making two trees. It is quite old, perhaps 30 years, with a diameter of about two inches at the point where I would apply the spaghnum moss.
J. C., Waycross We have been advised that your chances for success would be very slim. Due to the age of the tree and to the ge'netic and morphological make-up, (hope you understand that as the Straight Line editor didn't want to ap pear dumb and didn't ask) cedars would seemingly be most difficult to air layer. However, we suggest that you try it even though the process of root initiation and development may require several months, if at all.
I wish to know what to put on honeysuckle vine to completely destroy it. It has covered the ground under my pecan tree and I believe this is the reason for my pecans being no good. Also, I would like to know what to use to destroy wisteria.
Mrs. E. B., Rochelle Our Plant and Entomology Division says that 2,4-1) or Silvex spray will destroy both of these vines. For honeysuckle vines, we suggest spraying twice in two to three week intervals around February and March, before it starts blooming. Wisteria vine should be sprayed twice in two to three week intervals in April or May.
