Beautification -
Everybody's Job
The University of Georgia
Cooperative Extension Service has
for many years conducted an
educational program toward preser-
ving and developing the landscape of
the state. In the early years the
primary emphasis was on the home
landscape.
Extension specialists working
through 'the local Extension Ag-
ents brought ab-
out many impro-
vements in the
home and commu-
nity environ-
ment.
During the pa-

beautification, civic design, highway beautification, and 4-H Community Pride projects.
The "Make Georgia Beautiful" program (1965-1970), in
cooperation with the Department of Industry and Trade and other state organizations and clubs, was a tremendous success by promoting anti-litter and the planting of flowering trees. Through these projects many worthwhile and con-
tinuing efforts in clean-up a-nd civic design projects have made communities cleaner and more visually pleasing. Result landscape demonstration projects have made available good examples of residential and civic designs in all areas of the state.
Today the Extension Service is active in conducting short courses,
clinics, demonstrations and lectures in communities over the state. The Extension Agents and Extension Landscape Architects working with local clubs, adult education classes in University System colleges, and youth groups plan and conduct short courses on home landscape design and community planning.
Radio, TV, slide sets, and
publications are used to present the latest landscape design information
to the public. The Extension landscape program
emphasizes the importance of preserving historical areas, as well as protecting natural beauty. Much emphasis is placed on better land use
and site planning, use of native plant materials,, and planning low maintenance landscape developments.
Several thousand 4-H club mem-
bers annually are given the op-
portunity through the "Landscape Project" to learn more about plants and the environment and also make

Butz Proposes Georgia Soils Need Lime
Drastic Change For Maximum Soybean
In Leaf Quotas
Low soil pH is one of the major limiting factors on many Georgia farms. Numerous crop failures in Georgia have been attributed to unlimed acid soils. These failures have been especially evident on "new-ground" land. Most of

press indicated that Secretary of Agriculture Earl Butz is considering increasing and/or completely lifting flue cured tobacco production quotas.
The effect on Georgia's number two cash crop could be disastrous.
Without production quotas on tobacco and an accompanying price
support program, anyone could get in the tobacco growing business. This would result in lowering land values in tobacco producing areas, would threaten a major source of cash farm income for hundreds of
farmers, create havoc in our auction market system and other problems for tobacco producing states that are
as yet unforeseen. Tobacco farmers in Georgia are
urged to contact Secretary Butz's office and their Congressman during the Christmas holidays and
express strong opposition to any such changes in our present tobacco production program.
WARNING! PESTICIDE DRUMS SHOULD NOT BE REUSED
The Georgia Department of Agriculture has received reports that some farmers are possibly using old 55 gallon pesticide drums to store oil and gasoline.
This is in-direct violation of the Georgia Pesticide Law and, in addition, can be dangerous.
Pesticide authorities warn that the pesticide residue in these drums can be harmful to your engine and the vapor or fumes from the pesticide is dangerous if inhaled.
Please READ and FOLLOW the directions on the label when using any pesticide or pesticide container. It is important!.
In spite of the demonstrated need
to correct low soil pH through sound liming programs, there is an alarmingly high percentage of soils that need lime. A summary of soil test results of the University of Georgia Soi_l and Plant Analysis Laboratory showed that almost 80% of the samples tested required some amount of lime. A recently completed survey of 309 farmer's fields in Southeast Georgia revealed that 43% of the soils such as this, what can one do? In this situation you should always innoculate and apply molybdenum. Molybdenum is not readily available on very acid soils. In fact, one of the
reasons for liming is to improve the availability of this nutrient. By sup-
plying molybdenum through a seed treatment, you may be able to increase yields on moderately acid soils.
The costs per application is not very high when one considers the economic returns. If we assume a

according to Commissioner of
Agriculture Tommy I rvin.
Under the new regulation, each
milk product container must be
clearly marked with the last date on
which the item can be sold or offered
for sale, listing either three letters

the date or a numerical series. Thus,

Irvin announced in October that
he would seek such a regulation after
holding hearings and meeting with
dairy industry representatives. He
said at that time that such a
requirement would not represent a
drastic departure from what was
already being done in that many
processors were putting a shelf life
date on milk products but in most
instances it was coded and not easily
interpreted by the average consumer.
Under the regulation, milk
processors will be required to certify
Nearly everybody loves green beans. Most Market Bulletin readers are
familiar with the different styles that can be purchased either canned or frozen in the food store. However, the folks up in the North Georgia mountains have two old time ways of preparing green beans that make for a
mouth watering delicacy. At left, Mrs. Gordon Odom of the Lower Young Cane community near Blairsville exhibits sour crock beans in her well stocked cellar pantry. On the right, Mrs. Norine Odom of Blairsville shows dired beans strung with needle and thread which are commonly known as "leather britches."

The maximum shelf-life for fluid uncultured milk products will be 10 days from the date of packaging.

( Dear Editor: This is to tell you and Mr. Tommy AGAIN how very much I
I enjoy our "new" BULLETIN. It is fabulous!
|
I And the issue of December 5 was especially interesting |
c with the wonderful holiday information; some pieces I've =
I sent to my daughter-in-law in Tennessee as she is girted I
I with making "pretties".
f
I enjoyed the way of fixing up a tree for Birds and will |
follow directions. I also sent that along to my son who loves |
birds as much as I.
c
Now, I greatly appreciated Mrs. McCullar's article. That i
wonderful Mr. Henry Grady isn't the only one having TWO |
CHRISTMASES, as you will see from the little story I'm sen- r
ding about my two Christmases. I hope you all will enjoy it. I
I'm now a senior citizen but I remember a wonderful I
childhood and the years that have followed.
|
Here's wishing all of you a delightful Christmas and not J
only 1974, but all the New Years to come.
c
"Miss Bertie"
I
"Two Visits from Santa? Yep!"
I
When I was growing up, my parents thought Christmas |
was a time to be AT HOME. My paternal grandparents and ~
family lived in the same community so I saw them almost I
daily. My maternal grandparents and family lived in f
Covington, Georgia, and when we visited them we rode the |
train from Atlanta to Covington and Grandpa would meet I
us in the buggy drawn by Bill, his big red horse. He'd tuck o
us in with a big furry laprobe for the drive into Covington. |
As the train travelled along, I could see Stone Mountain |
first on one side of the road and bit further, on the other 2
side. When I asked "How come?" I was told it jumped from I
side to side.
"
Since we were HOME for Christmas we always went to |
Covington for New Years. Now hear this: My Granny always J
gave her youngest daughter, four years my senior, and I a =
special treat. SHE wanted to enjoy we two little girls finding I
Santa Claus so she'd tell us if we were good girls Santa f
would stop back by on his way to the North Pole. Oh, how |
good we'd be, too! And sure enough, New Years Eve, we'd I
hang up our stockings and next morning we'd find them c
filled to the brim with candies, nuts and an apple and an i
orange!
I
What lucky kids we were to have TWO visits from Santa ?
Claus. I wonder if any other kids ever had such a thrill? I I
feel we were the only ones.

Humor 'Round The Barn
"THE POTATO ORDER"
Dear Mr. Jake Hardin Avera, Ga.
Please, sir, bring me seventy five cents worth of sweet potatoes at your earliest convenience. I want all of them excepting one, to be about the size of an egg laid by a eight pound hen, and about eight or ten inches long. I want one large one to fry, make souffle, pies, custards and a good old fashion potato pudding.
As you know I'm a poor widow woman, living all alone, and have a roost of children and grand children that are forever in and out and, Lordy mercy, what coming appetites they have all got, and the last one of them are pig wild after sweet potatoes anyway I fix them.
I have just retired on social security and am catching up on my visiting around and fishing, and most likely, won't be at home when you bring them, but, please sir, put them on the water shelf on the back porch for me and I'll be forever, muchoblige, to you and will return the favor some day.
My neighbor's dog, Cricket, lies on the back porch, a lots, and most likely will be ther, but don't pay him no attention 'cause he won't bite. But to be for sure he'll be friendly, carry him a few Johnny cake crackers. He love's 'em like a pig loves slop.
I'm not enclosing the seventy five cents in the letter because of hearing about so much money being stole from the mails. I'm not enclosing a check, neither, because the bank has started charging ten cents to cash them, unless you've got about a barrel! of money on deposit with them. But don't worry about your pay, Mr. Hardin, because nobody has ever said that good, ole, Ruby Taylor didn't pay her honest debts.
However with me being retired on social security and catching up on my visiting and fishing, I'll be a little hard to find to get your pay. The best time to catch me at home will be soon in the morning and late at night. I, also, go to the Red and White supermarket sometimes on Saturdays.
I'm at home most all of Sundays, excepting when I'm gone to church, but don't think it'd be pleasing to the Lord to be paying a debt on the Sabbath day.
However, if you don't make contact with me in a reasonable length of time, give me a ring on the phone and I'll tell you the precise time and place where you can find me.
I know we're not on the same exchange, and it'll cost thrity five cents to call me, but we won't fight over that, because we're both good people and want to do what's right.
Bye, now, and I'll be looking for my potatoes real, real soon.
As ever, Ruby Taylor P.S. Ruby got her potatoes, Cricket got his Johnny cake crackers, and Mr. Hardin? Well, he felt so overly paid from the kick he got out of the letter that he graciously gave Ms. Taylor the potatoes.
(Ed's Note: One of our advertisers declares he really received this letter. However, he changed the name of the potato customer.)________________

Considered to be the first gift of the New Year, winter aconite blooms as early as January when warm days often melt the chill of winter. As a harbinger of spring, it has bright yellow flowers about 1 1/2 inches across bedded in small green leaves.
Eranthis means "flower of the arth" because of its short stems and hyemalis means "of winter" due to its characteristic blooming when Jack Frost has not yet given up the ghost.
Winter aconite thrives in any good, well-drained garden soil. It flourishes in shade and does quite well in a rock garden. It is a free seeder so it propagates itself rapidly but may be left undisturbed for years.
Although the name "New Years gifts" implies that it might be a nice present for someone, don't get out your shovel now. Winter aconite should not be moved or planted until August or September as active growing starts in early fall. The plant goes through a period of dormancy after blooming (anytime from January through March) until late summer.
Because of its early blooming, winter aconite has been compared to baby innocence and consequently Us affiliation with baby New Year. Although it appears harmless, it has been identified with the classical aconite which is the most deadly of all poisonous herbs.

Georgia Seed Lab
Improves Services
The Georgia Department of Agriculture seed laboratory, considered one of the best in the nation, was used last week to provide advanced training for state, federal and commercial seed analysts. This training is designed to provide uniformity in testing at the various private and government labs. Analyst from the Federal Seed Laboratory in Beltsville, Maryland and Montgomery, Alabama provided instructions for tne school.
A consumer can not judge the quality of seed by sight and must depend on the label on the container or analysis tags. This information on the tag or container is obtained by having a sample of seed tested in the Seed Laboratory.
This school is just one of the ways the Georgia Department of Agriculture uses in improving its services to Georgia farmers and consumers as we try to provide better services with the most modern laboratories and the best trained personnel.
Go. Leads Nation
in Farrowing
Georgia led the nation in percentage increase in farrowings during the March - through - May period in 1973, the Georgia Crop reporting Service indicates.
The increase of seven per cent paced the nation, with Minnesota as the runner-up state with a four per cent gain. Nationally, total farrowings declined two per cent.
Georgia registered 93,000 sows farrowing an average of seven pigs per litter for a pig crop for this period of 651,000 to rank 12th nationally.
Beef Cows Increase
Beef cows on Georgia farms at mid-year increased 5 per cent over the 881,000 on hand a year earlier, the Georgia Crop Reporting Service indicates.
The number of cows and heifers that had calved climbed 4 per cent to 1,064,000 head but all cattle and calves in the state totaled 2,080,000.

Could you please tell me the best way to keep a bull from nursing cows. I have a year old registered Santa Gertrudis bull and he has started nursing the cows that have just calved.
C. B., Norcross
We suggest that you put two rings in the bull's nose to prevent his nur sing any more cows. If this does not correct the problem, you may have your veterinarian remove a small portion of the triangular tip of the tongue. This surgical procedure has been successful in some cases. The only additional remedy that we could suggest is to separate the bull from the cows for a long period of time. If all the above attempts are failures, it is suggested that the bull be sacrificed for slaughter.

Agricultural Calendar-
Soybean Yield
(Continued From Page 1)
soybean rotations the useful period for lime is.three years; therefore, it would require a yield increase of less than one bushelper acre per year to pay for the lime. It is logical to assume that if your soil test results indicates a need for lime, you will gain more than enough yield increase to pay for the lime. In reality, on some strongly acid soils we can expect annual yield increases of 7 to 10 bushels per acre.
Many soybean producers have complained that they use lime, yet they can't see any differences in growth where it was used. It is true that unless you have check strips through the field and there is a rather large difference in soil pH you will not be likely to observe differences. You must, however, keep in mind that it is difficult if not impossible to see a difference of 3 or 4 bushels per acre in soybeans. Even the most trained expert could not do this. The only true test of yields is when the beans are weighed.
The unavailability of liming materials when needed is becoming more of a problem each year. Transportation is one of the major difficulties. Other "higher return" items frequently have priority for transportation facilities. Applying lime in the off-season is one way to reduce the problem of availability.
