Field Operations
Vital Link to CES
The Georgia Cooperative Extension Service is a unit of the University of Georgia College of Agriculture designed to carry knowledge and resources of the University to all Georgians. The CES is a vital link in the two-way flow of information between the laboratories, classrooms, and experiment stations and the people of Georgia who are not taking part in formal University on-campus activities.
Historically, Extension's major thrust has been toward the real-
life problems of farmers, rural homemakers and youth. County Extension Agents, with the support of highly trained subject matter specialists, have traditionally wo__________rked to solve problems for these important audiences through educational programs in agriculture, home economics, 4-H, and community development. Today, the Extension Service deals with an ever-widening range of problems growing out of the

changing work and life experiences of Georgians regardless of where they live or what they do. The traditional audiences have been expanded to include urban residents, inner-city youth, main street businessmen, agricultural industry suppliers and processors, and local civic and governmental leaders.
To facilitate the flow of such diversified information to Georgia citizens, CES was reorganized in July 1972. In addition to the realignment of administrative districts to conform to state government reorganization, new district level program and administrative teams were created to give more intensive leadership and assistance to County Extension Agents in the four major program areas of agriculture and natural resources, 4-H, home economics, and community development. This team of program leaders in each district is headed by a District Agent-Chairman who coordinates the total Extension program effort in his district.
To increase the availability of this team, district headquarters offices were moved from the University of Georgia campus to strategic locations within the district being

Garbage Feeding
Stopped In State
To Prevent Cholera
The Georgia Department of Agriculture has received a number of inquiries during the last two or three weeks as to why it is now illegal to feed garbage (food waste containing meat scraps) to swine.
This is not an arbitrary law intended to work a hardship on anyone. Rather it is a safety and money saving law which became absolutely necessary to stop outbreaks of one of Georgia's most costly livestock diseases hog cholera.
The law was passed in 1971 by the Georgia legislature as an outgrowth of concern over the high costs of indemnity payments for hogs slaughtered as a result of cholera.
In 90 percent of these cholera outbreaks, which in 1969 cost $275,523
and in 1970, $84,362, the cause could be directly traced to the feeding of garbage. A legislative study committee went into the problem very thoroughly before legislation was introduced and then urged the passage as previous cholera and cooked garbage legislation was not sufficiently ef-
fective to totally eradicate hog cholera.
The law had a delay period and did not become effective until January of this year in order to give institutions which disposed of garbage in this manner and producers who utilized garbage an opportunity to make other arrangements.
Georgia has been effective in the eradication of hog cholera since it began its cholera eradication campaign 11 years ago. It was estimated

The 1973 Georgia tobacco season has ended with a record high general average price being paid for this year's crop of Georgia-Florida flue cured
tobacco.

Ga. Homeowners
Plagued By Mildew
Homeowners throughout Georgia are finding mildew on the exterior and interior surfaces of their homes. This mildew is the result of the heavy rainfall and warm weather we have experienced so far this year.
Mildew spores are everywhere. Mildew feeds on organic matter such as paper, leather, wood or the oily film which accumulates on a surface if it is not regularly cleaned. Aside from looking unsightly, mildew can be extremely destructive. There is no absolute prevention against mildew occuring under continuous warm, damp weather conditions.
Mildew patches are usually black and may resemble dirt. To identify mildew, try this simple test: Apply a few drops of a household bleach solution to the suspected area. If the spot lightens in one to two minutes it is probably mildew.
Repainting is not the answer until the mildew is completely removed. Otherwise, the mildew will continue to grow through the new paint-
The following solution is very effective for cleaning mildewed areas; two-thirds cup of a strong liquid household cleaner, one-third cup powdered all-purpose laundry

However, a drop in sales volume resulted in a decrease in total value and dollars received by tobacco farmers as compared to last year. Due to bad weather conditions, Georgia tobacco farmers produced and sold some 14 million pounds less tobacco this year and therefore pocketed some $1 million less.
Georgia growers had an allotment to produce 126 million pounds of tobacco in 1973, but due to excessive rains during the growing season, only 98 million pounds were marketed. An average price of $88.15 per c.w.t. was received, $2.35 higher than last year for a total of $86,607,375.
Gross sales for the type 14 belt, including Florida markets, totaled 153,457,340 pounds and averaged $87.72 per cwt. This includes 118,974,098 pounds produced in Georgia, Florida and Alabama and 28,871,337 pounds produced in N. C., S. C, Va. and 5,61 1,905 pounds of resale.
Last year's gross sales amounted to 165,097,617 pounds and brought an average price of $85.80 per cwt.
Georgia Commissioner of Agriculture Tommy Irvin visited all of the Georgia markets early in the season and urged warehousemen to give priority to Georgia-Florida grown tobacco when filling warehouse floors.

BRING 'EM BACK ALIVE

The Ten Commandments of Hunting Safety

Hunting season is starting across the state and more Georgians are ex-
pected in the fields this year to enjoy the outdoors and to try to put a little
extra meat on the table. Cooperative Extension Service
wildlife specialist Robert L. Carlton
says the hunter should check his gun before taking to the field. This is especially important if the gun has been stored during the winter.
Check the stock. Make sure it is
attached firmly and correctly. Examine the inside of the barrel for grease and rough spots. Only a light coat of oil should be visible.
Make sure the mechanical condition of the gun is perfect. Pay close attention to safety. If there are problems take the gun to a gunsmith.
The best known safety rules are the ten commandments of firearm safety. If hunters learn and observe
them, their outing will be much safer and enjoyable.
Here they are: 1. Treat every gun with the respect
due a loaded gun. It would not be wrong to say that more people are shot by "unloaded" guns than are shot with loaded guns. When
someone hands you a gun, the first

thing you should do is open the action and make certain the firearm is truly unloaded.
2. Watch the muzzle. In company with others, make certain your gun is not pointing in the direction of anyone else. Carry your gun in such
a way that even should you stumble or fall you can control the direction of the muzzle.
3. Make certain that the barrel and the action are clear of obstruction. Should you fall and your firearm hit the ground, always check the barrel to make certain that dirt, mud, snow or other materials have not become lodged in the barrel. If you should try to fire a cartridge through an obstructed barrel, the least that will happen is that the gun will be ruined; at worst, you may be killed or lose an eye.
Carry only ammunition for the gun you are using. Do not mix shells

or cartridges of various sizes. For
example, a 20-gauge shell inserted into a 12-gauge gun. You can imagine the results.
4. Make certain of your target before you shoot You should know
what your quarry looks like before
you get into the field. Ideally, you should be in a field without a gun before hunting season and learn to recognize deer, rabbits, squirrels or birds. Look to see where your bullet
might go if you miss or if it goes through the target. Take the safety off- only when ready to fire.
5. Unload guns when they are not
in use. Break the gun down or open and lock the action. Have your gun
in a case traveling to and from shooting. Do not carry loaded guns in a vehicle.
6. Never point a gun at anything
you do not want to shoot Guns are
tools not toys. Avoid all horseplay.
Don't ever point even an unloaded gun at another person.
7. Never climb a fence or tree or jump across a ditch with a loaded
gun. If you are alone when you come
to a fence, unload the gun, put it across the fence, go through the

7 Year Old Jack

A Young Jack And Jennie

Dear Editor:

The information in "What Is Wild Rose", paragraphs 1
and 4, on Rosa rugosa is possibly inaccurate. There is another rose called Japanese Rose (Rosa
multiflora) which is widely used as an understock, due to its ability to quickly produce a vigorous and well-branched root system. It is found widespread in Georgia and elsewhere due to grafted roses dying out as well as deliberate planting in many places as a "living fence". R. multiflora grows readily from seed, which are widely dispersed by birds. Flowers are single white and in small clusters. It blooms only in spring but R. rugosa repeats somewhat.
The Macartney Rose (R. bracteata) is also widespread in Georgia and is (unfortunately) confused with the Cherokee Rose (R. laevigata), the State flower.
Other roses I have found in numerous places in Georgia are the pink rambler 'Dorothy Perkins' (1901; its red and white forms are less common; often confused with 'Seven Sisters') and R. Carolina, a low-growing single pink species.

Being raised as a city girl, I never knew much about farm animals. One day while visiting a country friend, we were at the bam when she said, "Well, our old cow finally came in". I said, "Where's she been?"

BUYING CITRUS One of the best guides in buying citrus is weight. The heaviest fruit, not the biggest, will give you the greatest value, say Cooperative Extension Service experts.

Couch grass is not a favorite plant because it readily invades gardens and lawns and is difficult to get-rid of. It likes loose ground where its creeping rhizomes can run without discretion near the surface. These underground stems put out side branches with joints about one inch apart. If you cut couch grass down, the underground joints will not die but form several new plants instead of one.
The rhizome tips are so tough that virtually nothing will stop them, even tree roots. The close and strong network that these underground roots form serves a useful purpose away from the garden in holding loose soil together, especially shifting sand.
On the plus side, couch grass is a rich source of potassium, chlorine, and other useful materials. It is often called "Dog's grass" because sickly dogs and cats seek it out as a cure to their illnesses. In fact, if it is available, they will eat it regularly to keep themselves healthy and fit.
It has been suggested that couch grass be fed to beef and poultry as a means of organically providing minerals, special carbohydrates and sugar for their diet.
Herbalists in Europe sell couch grass as a health food. The sweettasting roots are said to relieve rheumatism, gout and kidney disorders when made into a tea. Clean roots and remove any fine hairs. Cut into pieces and steep one ounce of roots in 1 1/4 pints boiling water.

Garbage Feeding
(Continued From Page 1)
at one time that cholera was costing Georgia swine farmers at least $2 million each year.
After 8 years in its cholera eradication effort, the state was certified by the federal government as being free of the disease. However, two years later the disease was reintroduced from outside sources, including garbage feeding and flare ups continued to occur. These flare ups, which cost the state and federal governments $743 thousand in farmer indemnities during the past five years, were attributed primarily to the feeding of improperly cooked garbage.
We have in Georgia been able to eliminate these outbreaks and regain our cholera-free status. To maintain the control of this costly swine disease, it is necessary for garbage feeding to be stopped entirely.
Mildew Plague
(Continued From Page 1)
detergent; one quart of household bleach; three quarts of warm water.
Scrub the solution onto the area with a medium soft brush. Keep the surface wet until the stain has bleached out. Then rinse with clear, fresh water.
Hunting Safety
(Continued From Page 1)
fence yourself. Then reload. If you have a friend with you, one of you hold both firearms while the other crosses. The firearms are then passed across the fence unloaded. Only then does the next man cross.
Likewise for ditches. If you must climb a tree, unload the weapon first. Make absolutely sure it is unloaded! Either carry it up with you or attach a string to the gun and pull it up to you after you have climbed the tree. Never pull the gun toward you by the muzzle.
8. Never shoot a bullet at a flat or hard surface or at water. A bullet striking a flat surface at a low angle will ricochet. You have no knowledge where it may go. Remember even a bullet as small as a 22 is capable of killing or damaging at a mile.
9. Store guns and ammunition separately. Before you enter the house, unload your gun and open and lock the action. The gun should go in a cabinet which can be locked. Ammunition should go in a separate drawer which can also be locked.
10. Avoid alcohol before or during shooting. When hunting, do not drink. And do not go out with others who drink. Gun powder and alcohol do not mix.

Straight Line

What is a "water closet"? H. B., Gumming

A toilet.

***

When is a pony considered a household pet and when is it considered livestock?
S. B., Richmond Hill

A pony is always considered livestock. It is a pet but not a household pet (unless you keep him in the house, and not enough people do). It is included in the USDA Agricultural Census*as* l*ivestock.
Is there such a thing as a hereford hog? Do you have a picture? D. M., Dublin

There is, but we don't know of any in Georgia. You might find a picture of one in one of your farm journals,* b*ut* we don't have one.
Enclosed you will find a caterpillar that feasts on the leaves also enclosed (believed to be a red bud tree). One of these beasts caught on my sleeve as I was cutting the grass and stung the living daylights out of me. It was more of a burning sensation, more on the line of a Portugese Man-o-war type sting. How do I get rid of IT?
J. C., Gumming

The beast was one of the slug caterpillars. A characteristic of these beasts is their stinging setea (hairs) which inject a fluid into the skin causing a sharp pain and itching. Spray Sevin for control.

When is the best time to pull martin gourds? C. B., Manchester

The gourds should be allowed to remain on the vine until they are fully matured, usually when frost kills the vines. After the vines are dead, the gourd should be pulled and placed in a dry sheltered area until they are fully dried. It is usually best to wait until the gourds are dry before cutting the holes in them for martin houses. The gourd will last longer if you apply a coat of varnish before you hang it up for use by the birds.
