Georgia Fairs -
Blue Ribbons
The members of the Georgia Association of Agricultural Fairs are proud of their Association and for what it stands.
Most of the sixty-three fairs in the State of Georgia that are
members of the Georgia Association of Agricultural Fairs are sponsored by civic clubs for the purpose of promoting agriculture, education, community involvement, and family type entertainment.
It has long been said that competition is the life of trade. It may be added that competition is also the life of progress.
The original purpose of competition at the early fairs was to get

those people engaged in agriculture to produce more and better livestock and other farm products, for an ever increasing market. Competition was keen and the desire to produce more was the utmost in the minds of the farmers, as was the desire to win the coveted blue ribbon at the fair. It is that desire today that brings the best livestock, from poultry to beef cattle, to the fairs over the state.
The Youth organizations that are involved in many of our fairs are 4H, Future Farmers of America and Future Homemakers of America. Through the efforts of tens of thousands of these boys and girls has come the science of better livestock breeding and feeding as well as the most advanced agricultural production" of all farm products of the entire state.
Fairs have come a long way, in the past thirty years through modernization, from the all daylight fair to the day and night fair; from horse power to the modern power of electricity and gasoline; from the chick sale specials to the modern rest rooms. So many changes have taken place they are too numerous to mention. In spite of all this great progress, there are still people who have never attended a fair and are certain that milk comes from bottles.
There can be no question about fairs being a great educational institution, for where else but at the fair can you see such a concentration of achievement of modern progress, both on the farm and in industry.
There are eight essential ingredients for producing a good

Farm Income Up In '72
Cash receipts from farm marketings and Government payments rose 14 percent in Georgia during 1972, according to the Georgia Crop Reporting Service, and totaled over $1.5 billion. Commercial broilers had reigned as the leading source of farm income since 1956 but lost that distinction last year as peanuts moved into first place. Sales of livestock and livestock products brought in $786,774,000, accounting for 52.4 percent of the total income while crop sales made up 42.2 percent and amounted to $634,392,000. Government payments increased $18 million
up 28 percent over 1971 payments and totaled $81,853,000.

Magnolia seed may be collected from mid-September through October when the cones have begun to open. Early collections should be spread out to dry in shallow layers.
The fruits will open in a few days

Read, Heed Labels
On All Pesticides
Millions of dollars in research, testing, and developing have gone into producing the labels on pesticides. Therefore, a person should read and heed the label recommendations each time he uses a pesticide.
All the information on the label is important to the user, and is required by both state and federal law. One particular 'requirement of law deserves special mention: each pesticide label must carry a list of the plants or crops on which the pesticide may be used.
The law is for the protection of the user of the product. Suppose an insecticide is registered for use on flowers and ornamentals, but no mention is made of use in the home vegetable garden. This tells the consumer that either the pesticide product may not control the garden insects, or that it may injure the

A number of years ago, we had 48 states in our U.S.A.; later we had 49 states and now we have 50. We had a 48-star flag with 48 states and now we have 50 stars in Old Glory. My question is this: Was their ever a 49-star flag designed and put on sale to the public? Can you buy them and where?
A. S., West Point

The Department of Archives and History offers the information that

there was indeed a 49-star flag which was the authorized flag of the

United States from July 4, 1959 to July 4, 1960. To obtain a copy of this

flag, you can write to Annin and Company, 163 Bloomfield Avenue,

Gnats have really been a pest in southeast Georgia this year. Can you advise how they may be eliminated? They cling1 tenaciously to every part of the exposed body and as one enters the house, there must be a fanning fight to prevent their entrance.
E. P., Newington

The eye gnat, Hippelates pusio, is a serious pest over large areas of Southern Georgia and neighboring states. It breeds almost everywhere the soil is distributed in deep, crumbly, sandy areas. As the immature of larval stage of this pest lives in the soil on organic matter and emerges as an adult in about twelve days (80 F.) after the female deposits the eggs, it is not economically feasible to poison all the soil. As the eye gnats easily migrate up to one mile from their place of emergence to areas of human activity, it would be necessary to poison vast areas to stop them in the immature stage. After the adults emerge, they are vulnerable to spray materials such as Malathion, Dibrom and Pyrethroids; however, it is necessary to treat a large area and only temporary supression is obtained due to new adults constantly emerging from the soil. Unless a person is prepared to treat large areas of land with an insecticide for temporary

Dear Editor:
This double watermelon was viewed by hundreds of people at the Savannah Fanners Market who young and old remarked that they had never seen a double watermelon. It had two hearts and was separated by a thin white wall.

Dear Editor:
I'm writing in reference to the article on the Gypsy Moth that appeared in the August 8th issue of the FARMERS AND CONSUMERS MARKET BULLETIN. The article was very informative and would like to see more printed on the subject. Should this destructive pest invade our state, it would ruin our beautiful Georgia forests.
I was made aware of where and when the male gypsy moth was trapped, and by whom, however, credit was not given where credit was due. As you may know Chapters of the Georgia State Association of the National Campers and Hikers Association are very much involved in the gypsy moth trapping program, and the suspect (now positively identified) was found in a trap installed and checked weekly by a member of the DeKalb Trail Hounds Chapter, NCHA.
I would appreciate very much a follow-up article on the subject and credit these conscientious citizens and cam pers who are working so diligently and with close coor dination with the U. S. Department of Agriculture Plant Protection and Quarantine Programs and the U. S. Forestry Commission.
This is the first year that the Georgia State Association of NCHA is involved in the gypsy moth trapping program in Ga. Plans are being formulated to have a still greater coverage in 1974. Thanking you in advance for your cooperation and the fine work you are doing for our state.
Ed J. Parent, Chairman Georgia Gypsy Moth Task Force Georgia State Assn. of National Campers and Hikers 4640 Bloomfield Road Macon, Georgia 31206

IMPORTANT NOTICE Please remember that a listing without stating a price is hardly worth the effort or, at best, requires extra effort.

Humor 'Round The Barn
During the depression, the Rolling Store would come by our house every Saturday for trading of various types. Papa had gone to town and bought a Cornish Game Rooster, which Mama resented, because she considered her chickens in her jurisdiction. So one Saturday morning while Papa was in the tobacco field, she caught the Cornish Game Rooster and sent my little sister, Mamie and little brother, Talmadge, down to a tenant house to sell him to the Rolling Store before he got to our house. All went well with Mam's trading until Papa walked up. He liked the Cor nish Rooster so well that he decided to buy him to go with his other one! I will never forget the funny look on Mac Simon's face, as he tried to keep from laughing as he sold Papa's rooster back to him, or the dismayed look on Mama's face, as she stood helplessly by, looking on!

Ground ivy differs from other ivy mainly because of its inability to climb. When allowed to naturalize, it covers all available ground with a green carpet in shaded areas, or crimson and purple tinged leaves in the sun.
Our British ancestors are credit with transplanting ground ivy to the New World. In Europe it was also known as tunhoof, blue runner, cat's foot, and Creeping Jenny. We nicknamed it "Creeping Charlie".
As standard stock of most European household herbs, it was encouraged-to grow among other garden plants. In America, however, where its herbal uses have long been over-looked, it grows wild and is regarded as a nuisance.
"Creeping Charlie" is a perennial with trailing stems, and fibrous roots that attach to the ground at intervals. The hairy, heart-shaped, scalloped leaves can thus quickly cover an area in shade or semi-sun.
In Britain, the main purpose of ground ivy as an herb was as a flavoring agent for liquids. However, ground ivy can be made into a tea valuable in itself for relieving coughs, indigestion, and kidney disorders according to her balists. One ounce of the herb to 1 1/4 pints of boiling water produces a curative tea supposedly useful in doctoring most complaints of the body.

WHEN TO PRUNE

Don't get in any hurry about
pruning fruit trees. It's a good practice to wait and do all pruning in late winter, according to Extension Service horticulturist C. D. Spivey. Except for muscadine grapes, that is.
Muscadines should be pruned between Thanksgiving and Christmas.

Patchwork Memories
The family home was smoldering From the fire the night before And the country folks were planning To the rescue they would go.
One friendly, kindly neighbor Thought of the old quilt chest, All wrapped in faded tissue The one that she loved best.
She carefully unfolded it And gently touched the squares, Then carbon copy memories Around her everywhere,
Again she heard the neighbors knock And hurried to the door. It seemed a re-creation A day they shared before.
She saw old friends and neighbors, Today was yesterday, And then before her very eyes, The quilt scrap basket lay.
The mothers brought their children, The babies and some kin, Little pallets on the floors, No baby-sitters, then.
The old quilt frame was set in place, And friends around it sat, Pleasant, happy faces, The same old chitty-chat.
Sweet, gentle hands held needles And thread them one by one, They tied the knots securely, The quilting had begun.
The happy children's voices Were heard outside the door, Laughing, playing hop-scotch, A game of long ago.
Upon the pretty patchwork quilt She found a lacy scrap, Then visions of a little girl Who wore this baby cap.
A piece of well-worn denim, Her son's discarded coat, Fingered and carressed it, A lump came to her throat,
As she began to fold the quilt, A muslin piece off-white, Perhaps she cherished most of all, Worn on her wedding night.
From enchantment to reality Where all of us must come, The time had passed too quickly, A perfect day, re-run.
She reached for her blue bonnet, And tied the ribbons tight, And hurried to her neighbor Who would need the quilt that night.

on hardware cloth. After a short period of superficial drying, the seeds are ready to be planted.
Magnolia seed may be either fall sown or stratified over winter and sown early the following spring. In the fall sowing, clean seed or seed in the pulp should be drilled in rows eight to 12 inches apart and covered with about one-fourth inch of firm soil.
The bed must be mulched with a layer of straw or leaves heavy enough to prevent freezing of the seed. This is not removed until all danger from late, spring frosts is past. Seedbeds must be kept moist until germination is complete.
The seedlings require half shade during much of the first part of summer and do best in rich soil.
More Pork Needed
Hogmen will have to up production 25 per cent by 1985 to fill the expected demand for pork.

Straight Line (

(Continued From Page 1) control, it would be better to use a good insect repellent when it is
necessary to be engaged in outside activity. There are many good repellents; however 6-12 is commonly available and works very well. It is well to keep domestic animals, if possible, away from the proximity of the house and keep Mammalian pets, e.g., dogs, cats, etc., as clean as possible. This will help cut down on the "attractant load". Current research on the eye gnats include certain genetic aspects, new juvenile hormones (compounds applied to the soil in very minute quantities that prevent the immature from becoming an adult), poison baits, and ecological studies. This gnat is not unlike many other insect pests in its resistance to all forms of control. As many other insect pests, they will require much time and energy to learn how to permanently suppress this

nuisance.

Could you tell me why milk will not clabber after about two days. It will sour but still be thin. I will appreciate your letting me know of something to

do. Mrs. P. B., Greensboro

We have been getting quite a few letters from people who are having trouble with their milk not clabbering. We suggest that you put about a cupful of buttermilk into your milk and stir it up. The milk should set over night at room temperature -- about 72 Fahrenheit.

Please tell me the proper time to prune gardenia bushes. Mrs. J. H., Waverly Hall

It is our general opinion that if gardenia plants need severe pruning, this should be done in late winter or very early spring. If light or moderate pruning is needed, it may be done at the same time or by cut
ting flowers with larger stem during flowering. Pruning should not be done in late summer since the resulting new growth may not be suf

ficiently matured by cold weathe*r.* *

I would like some advice on the use of the chemical Silvex for control of

lily pads in a pond.

F. S., Athens

The chemical Kuron (Silvex) used at the rate of one gallon per surface acre for control of lily pads will not harm the fish population. If the en tire lake is covered with lily pads, we suggest treating sections of the lake, waiting two weeks between treatments. This is to avoid low oxygen problems due to the decomposition of the plant matter.
