Research Plays Important Role
Historically Americans have always taken positive and vigorous action to correct environmental abuses once they become aware of the problems and the need for conservation measures. Witness the ground swell of public opinion that led to the formation of the National Parks and National Forests in the early 1900's.
Later, concern over the deter-
ioration of farm and range lands stimulated the soil c o n servation movement and the effective remedial programs
C ^.... that started in A^j the 1930's. MolSlfeof^Bfc re recent envi"^^m ronmental and *iiiSBH ecological concern stems from our rapidly expanding population and pressures on land, water~and air resources. Land use problems have become critical and pressing.
Research has always played an important role in defining natural resource problems and in furnishing

basic facts needed to chart meaningful and productive courses for corrective action. Research is particularly important, and is a continuing vital need in the present conservation thrust which encompasses not only the materials for economic survival but also the essentials for healthful and meaningful human existence.
Land use planning is the key to the future to ensure the proper balance between productivity and a full and satisfying life for all in which aesthetic and spiritual values can be obtained from farm and forests as well as the more basic needs of food and shelter.
By the year 2000 the South will be called upon to produce more than half of America's total wood supply. It can do so if research solves numerous problems on how to fully utilize every available acre and if knowledge of human behavior can be harnessed and directed toward positive economic goals. Human attitudes and social behavior may be the most important factors in the long term objectives.
There is no time like the present to prepare for the future. The Biblical observation that where there is no vision the people perish is particularly apt today. Planning for the future requires people, land, and facilities.

State Joins Fight To Stop Rustling
Commissioner of Agriculture Tommy Irvin has thrown state agriculture inspectors into the fight to halt livestock rustling and "moonlight slaughtering" which has grown significantly since the beef shortage and meat price increases.
Although no arrests have resulted as yet, Department inspectors are stopping livestock trucks on major highways to determine whether the livestock are being moved legitimately. Truck driver identification, as well as proof of livestock ownership, is sought in each such case.
Several cases under investigation include the killing and butchering of cattle and hogs in pastures. In several instances where cattle have been slaughtered, only the hind quarters have been cut off and the rest of the animal left in the pasture.
Although the Department is limited in the number of men it can detail for such work, Irvin said his people will try to assist local law enforcement officials whenever such assistance is requested.________
The Paintin' & Pumpkin Arts and Crafts Show, September 8th and 9th, at the Atlanta Farmers Market, will feature arts, crafts and flea market finds offered by some 350 to 400 exhibitors. There will be music by the Forscom Army Band (formerly the Third Army Band) and other entertainment, too. The Arts & Crafts Show is open to the public.
Extra Selling Time Is Gained
For Georgia Tobacco Farmers
Farmers in the Ga.-Fla.-Ala. flue cured tobacco belt will have extra selling time to dispose of local tobacco. Representatives of the Department of Agriculture met with buyers and members of the 33 man industry wide marketing committee in Raleigh last week and hammered out an agreement that should dispose of most, if not all, in-belt tobacco.
USDA Support Level For 1973 Peanuts
A national average support level
of $328.50 per short ton for 1973-
crop peanuts has been announced by
the U.S.D.A. This is $18.00 per ton
more than the preliminary minimum
announced and compares with the
$285.00 per ton support level for the
1972 crop. The final figure
represents 75 percent of the peanut
parity price for Aug. 1, the beginning
of the 1973-74 marketing year.
Support levels, by type, per ton of
average quality peanuts, are:
Virginia
$334.90/ton
Runner - - , 331.90/ton
Southeast Spanish 322.94/ton
Southwest Spanish - 319.23/ton
Valencia in the Southwest area
suitable for cleaning and
roasting
3 34.90/ton
Values for each percent of sound mature and sound split kernels, on a per ton basis, are: Virginia type, $4.671; Runner type, $4.632; Southeast Spanish type, $4.632; Southwest Spanish type, $4.632; Valencia type in the Southwest area suitable for cleaning and roasting, $5.102; other Valencia type, in all areas, $4.632.
Price schedules can be obtained from the GFA Peanut Association, Camilla, Ga.
The agreement reached late Thursday evening, after a vigorous fight, doesn't give everything Commissioner Irvin wanted and may inconvenience some farmers, but will give an opportunity to overcome most of the problems created by the flood of out-of-belt tobacco which robbed Georgia farmers of sales opportunity time.
The original sales opportunity time allocated for use during the next two weeks on six markets was reallocated for use by these markets this week, while three other markets are using their normal sales allocation this week but will also remain open next week.
Commissioner Irvin tried to get a fourth set of buyers on a market north of the Altamaha River for next week but was unable to do so.
The markets selling this week with extra sales time are Nashville, Statesboro, Tifton, Valdosta and Vidalia in Georgia and Live Oak in Florida.
The three markets selling their normal allocation this week and remaining open next week are Blackshear, Douglas and Moultrie. These three markets were selected by members of the Georgia Tobacco Warehousemen's Association, Irvin said.

If you see a beef animal on the hoof, it is not all meat that meets your eye according to the U. S. Department of Agriculture. Would you believe that about thirty-nine percent of the animal is all you'll get for "table ready" meats? An 885 pound steer produces 345 pounds of waste material, 180 pounds of fat and 86 pounds of bone. That leaves 346 pounds of "fit to eat" meat.
Fishing Abounds Throughout Georgia
Streams in the Blue Ridge Mountains of north Georgia offer some of the South's finest trout fishing for three different species. There are more than 3,000 miles of streams 'designated as trout waters.
The fighting rainbow trout are found in most trout waters in Georgia, but prefer fast-flowing streams and rivers.
Native brook trout are found in the headwaters and the more remote feeder streams.
Wary, elusive brown trout inhabit the slower-moving, warmer trout waters.
Many trout streams are regularly stocked by the Game and Fish Division, Department of Natural Resources, to supplement the existing fish population.
WARM-WATER
The rivers and streams of middle
Georgia and South Georgia offer some of the nation's finest warmwater fishing. These rivers include
the Flint, Alapaha, Satilla, Suwannee, Savannah, Ocmulgee, Altamaha, Canoochee, Ogeechee and St. Mary's.
Fresh water fish in these rivers and streams include large-mouth bass, spotted sunfish, chain pickerel, bluegill, redbreast, warmouth and catfish. In addition, striped bass and

Humor 'Round The Barn
The wild rose that we most often see growing along roadsides, overgrown gardens, and in open fields is the Rosa rugosa, the one variety of rose that most horticulturists classify as a weed rather than a flower. Rugosa is difficult to control in gardens but it also has many assets which balance out most of its liabilities.
Rugosa means wrinkled which characterizes the dark green leaves of the rose. The large, single fragrant flowers are a bright purplish-pink and the stems are covered by an armor of closely set, tough prickles.
The origin of the wild rose is thought to be Japan, northern China and parts of Korea. Rosefanciers introduced it into Europe and America where it has become so naturalized that it is more often considered a nuisance than a blessing.
This strong rose has been used as the most robust stock available for rose grafting. When grafted roses die out, many old gardens have been taken over by the rugosa. The plant has also been used extensively in Europe as a hedgerow to establish boundaries between farms and yards, the result being picturesque rose hedges along country lanes.
If you do not consider the healthgiving qualities of the wild rose you are not being totally fair. The leaf, petal and hip (the fruit of the rose plant formed after the blossom dies, a bulging of the stem under the wilted flower) are all most useful.
Dried rose leaves brew a soothing tea which cools the blood and can cure a tickling cough. Add fresh rose leaves to salads and desserts and take rose-hip syrup as a valuable source of vitamin C.

coastal areas. For inshore angling, there are vast stretches of estuaries, sounds and marshlands, along with the surf itself. Fishing from piers, bridges, beaches, banks and small boats, anglers bring home big catches.
Sea-trout, channel bass, striped bass, sheepshead, drum flounder, croaker and whiting are among the most frequently caught inshore. Shad are caught in bountiful numbers during their spring runs up the coastal rivers. The annual Shad Derby on the Ogeechee River offers fishermen a chance to compete for prizes.
OFFSHORE PARADISE Georgia's offshore waters are a paradise for the salt water angler. Warm Gulf Stream waters pass Georgia while moving northward, and species taken either north or south of the state, may at times be caught offshore. Game fish taken in Georgia's offshore areas include red snapper, bonita, flounder, crevalle jack, greater amberjack, little tuna, king mackerel, Spanish mackerel, dolphin, barracuda, bluefish and an occasional sailfish. Some of the best fishing in Georgia's offshore waters is five to six miles offshore and at the mouths of the larger sounds. The Sapelo Reef, approximately 16 miles east of Sapelo Island, often affords excellent fishing. The reef is an area rich in marine life.

Could you please tell me how to get rid of mildew on the ceiling of an open carport. It has been primed and painted with a good oil base paint and is ventilated in the eves and roof. Even the redwood posts mildew. Any advice.'
C. T. Chickamauga
To remove mildew from painted surfaces, the following procedure is recommended: Use about 1 cup of Chlorox to 1 gallon of water. Add some laundry detergent to this and apply to affected surface. A few minutes after this treatment, wash surface using water hose and a stiff brush. Rubber gloves may be used to protect the hands. If the paint is badly contaminated with mildew, a second treatment may be necessary.

I would like to know what will keep my little gourds from rotting every year. They get about as big as my thumb and rot.
Mrs. R. A., Cairo
The Director of our Plant Industry, Mr. Elmo Winstead, suggests that you apply some lime to the area in which you intend to plant gourds, do not plant them in an area with a rich soil and be sure not to use any nitrogen on the plants (since nitrogen usually causes excessive vine growth).
During the depression, the Rolling Store would come by our house every Saturday for trading of various types. Papa had gone to town and bought a Cornish Game Rooster, which Mama resented, because she considered her chickens in her jurisdiction. So one Saturday morning while Papa was in the tobacco field, she caught the Cornish Game Rooster and sent my little sister, Mamie and little brother, Talmadge, down to a tenant house to sell him to the Rolling Store before he got to our house. All went well with Mama's trading until Papa walked up. He liked the Cornish Rooster so well that he decided to buy him to go with his other one! I will never forget the funny look on Mac Simon's face, as he tried to keep from laughing as he sold Papa's rooster back to him, or the dismayed look on Mama's face, as she stood helplessly by, looking on!

GREENHOUSES
Considering a greenhouse? Think about building a plastic one. Construction cost per square foot is generally one-sixth to one-tenth the cost of a glass house, according to specialists with the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
SMALL GARDEN
Is a small garden worth the investment? Probably. A 20 x 20 foot garden plot should yield roughly $150 worth of vegetables. It'll cost you around $10 to $15 to get the garden established and keep it safe from insects.
