North Georgia
Has Agriculture
The great metropolis of Atlanta tends to command the spotlight when people think of "North Georgia". This has probably contributed to the idea that the region from the Fall Line northward is mostly "non-agricultural." But when one goes a few miles beyond the outskirts of Atlanta and its satellite towns, it's quite apparent that agriculture is an important continuing part of economic and social life in North Georgia.
Sixty to seventy percent of our state's dairy herds are located
in this northern region. The major concentration of our poultry industry, the largest single agricultural enterprise in Georgia, is located in the region. The poultry industry and other agricultural endeavors are supported by large concentrations of agriculturally related business in Northern Georgia. A significantly large proportion of Georgia's feeder cattle and feed

grain production are among the major farm pursuits and the region is particularly well suited to a rapidly expanding feeder pig industry.
The University of Georgia College of Agriculture Experiment Stations research effort in North Georgia is geared specifically to support the region's agriculture, and the administrative reorganization we underwent on August 1 does not change that goal in the slightest.
We are continuing to conduct our research program in the public interest. We do this by identifying and solving the problems that face our growers and businessmen and we try to anticipate problems before they spring up.
By consolidating all our North Georgia operations in one administrative confederation, we will be able to give closer attention to the kinds of work that fit the needs and desires of the North Georgia farm and urban population.
At Blairsville, we will continue to do our major proportion of work with horticultural crops such as fruit trees and certain vegetables and feed grains. At Eatonton, we will still concentrate on pasture management and beef cattle, and at Calhoun on livestock, in keeping with the fact

Irvin Requests More Selling Time For Georgia Tobacco

Number 34

Commissioner of Agriculture Tommy Irvin has asked the 33 man industry wide flue cured tobacco marketing committee that regulates tobacco sales to give him additional sales opportunity time for the Georgia-Florida flue cured tobacco belt.
In a telegram dated Thursday, August 16, to J. Frank Bryant of Boonville, N.C., committee chairman, Irvin asked that at least 3 million pounds of additional sales time be given him along with authority to assign it to tobacco warehouses on a ratio based on the amount of local tobacco handled during the first three weeks of tobacco sales.
In his request, Irvin pointed out that at the end of the first three weeks of sales 17,667,539 pounds of out-of-belt (Carolina) tobacco had been sold on local markets while a total of only 17,739,000 pounds was originally figured into the total sales opportunity time for GeorgiaFlorida markets.
"We will probably sell 3 million pounds of out-of-belt tobacco this week (August 17) and maybe as much as 5 million more pounds before the season closes Sept. 6. This extra burden of Carolina tobacco is robbing the Georgia farmer of sales opportunity time," Irvin said.
In the meantime, Irvin said some Georgia farmers are having trouble finding floor sales space for their tobacco on their local markets. He has urged farmers having such trouble to call his office for in-

We Get Letters

Dear Editor:

This is an article I wrote trying to enlighten the public to the shape this nation of our's is getting in. Anyway possible that you can find to print it would be greatly appreciated by myself and many other farmers who feel the same way.
"FOOD FOR THOUGHT" "Do these cows give sweet milk or buttermilk?" This question was asked by a ten year old boy visiting our dairy one day. Another youngster informed us that she liked to drink milk but her's did not^come from a cow; it came from the grocery store. These words came out of the mouths of babes but in comparison it is amazing how little the con sumer realizes what is involved to place milk on the shelves
at the store. Costs of everything have escalated to the dairyman in the
last year. Dairy feed alone has increased in price 100%
since mid-1972. In this same time period milk producers have only received a 12% increase for their raw milk. The average age of the dairy farmer is almost sixty years old. Cost of dairying is so high it is virtually impossible for young people to even get into the business, much less stay there. Land prices are so tempting to the farmer that he sells his land for subdivisions. Why shouldn't he if he can't make ends meet farming? When people are living on all the. land and there are no more farms where is the food and milk going to come from?
Dairy farmers, all farmers for that matter, are a dedicated breed of people, fighting high costs and very little pay because they like to farm, not because they are getting rich. Who can get rich when it takes more to operate a farm than your product brings?
It is time for people to wake up! When the consumer goes to the grocery store all they can do is complain about the high cost of living. They don't stop to think that a smaller percentage of their paycheck is going for groceries than ever before. As a concerned dairy farmer, I would like to suggest that people smile when they pay for their groceries, be thankful that they are able to buy them and pray as I do that the day will never come that they have the money to buy with but nothing to buy.
Mrs. Arthur Lee Tidwell Route 2 Summerville, Georgia 30747
(Editor's note: Although this letter exceeds our word limit, we
felt that Mrs. Tidwell had well stated what is in the minds and hearts of many of our farmers and needed to be published in its
entirety.)

Humor 'Round The Barn
I think batk a year ago when we welcomed to our farm home some military friends who were planning to retire from the Army and searching for a community such as ours. Fortunately, they did. Their youngest daughter was a very serious minded young lady and fascinated with farm life. She agreed to help me gather eggs and then decided to stay outside the chicken pen while I finished the chore. Af ter I closed the gate, she asked me quite seriously, "Did you get chicken maneuver on your feet?". The memories of the laughter that followed will live with us for years to come.

WHITE CLOVER

The fragrant wild plant is native

to Europe and Asia and has been

used as a crop cover for years in

America. In olden times they were

known as "clavers" and con

sequently lent their name to places

where they were found in abun

dance.

Claver is thought to come from

the Latin word "clava" meaning

club referring to the plant's three

leaves. The leaves are historically

ancient charms against witches,

and other evils, and are especially

potent if a four-leaf clover can be

found.

White clover was first

acknowledged in Holland as an im

portant agricultural crop and con

sequently became known as

"Dutch" clover. The "bobby roses"

or clover flowers stand erect until

they are pollinated, then turn brown

and develop seed pods.

The white clover leaves, however,

remain green through the heat of

the summer and are often used in

lawns where they spread rapidly to

form a thick carpet.

Red clover has as many common

names as any other wild plant can

claim. "Clover Rose," "Sugar-

Bosses",

"Honeysuck",

"Cowcloos", and "Lady's Posies"

are only a few of the more popular

ones.

Red clover, unlike the white

variety, does not creep. Its flowers

and leaves are much larger and the

plant will grow up to two feet tall

from several stems, all originating

in a central root. Red clover, too, is

an excellent green manure for your

lawn. It will enrich your soil and

choke out weeds.

Besides being a valuable ground

cover, clover also has been used

as a medicinal for centuries. Clover

tea made from flowers and leaves

soothes the nervous system,

reduces gas and relieves coughs.

Make the tea by pouring 1 1/4 pints

of boiling water over 1 ounch of

fresh leaves and/or flowers. Red or

white clover may be used.

THE MARKET BULLETIN

Wednesday, August 22, 1973

North Georgia
(Continued From Page 1)
that the principal agriculture of
North Georgia is principally animal agriculture. The major programs underway at the Georgia Station where a good portion of our effort goes toward feed grain production and feed evaluation will continue under the new administrative arrangement.
I am personally convinced of the tremendous potential for agricultural advancement in North Georgia, especially in the areas of feed grain production, animal production, ornamentals, fruits and vegetables and horticultural specialty crops. I think we are about to experience a renewal of the kind of interest in North Georgia agriculture that existed when cotton made it the agricultural center of the state and our research scientists will continue to help clear the way for that to happen.
Georgia Tobacco
(Continued From Page 1)
formation on where floor sales space is available and been assured by warehousemen they will give Georgia farmers priority over out-ofbelt tobacco in alloting floor space.
In regard to prices on this year's crop, Irvin said he was disappointed.
"The price has not been as high as I was led to believe it would be," he said. "There is a strong foreign demand for our tobacco, a short supply, an increase in production costs coupled with re-evaluation of the dollar, buyers should be paying more for this year's crop," he said.
The Georgia Department of Agriculture is keeping an up-to-date listing of all Georgia markets which have space available and/or when space will be available. If you need this information call Area code 404 656-3676 or 656-3368.
Ga.'s Wafers
(Continued From Page 1)
largemouth capitol of the state. Small Waters
There are numerous small water impoundments in many parts of the state that provide good fishing.
Many Georgia State Parks offer rewarding fishing at readily accessible lakes or in reservoirs, streams or rivers mentioned elsewhere. High Falls State Park, near Jackson and Griffin, has a 660acre lake intensively managed for fishing. The principal species are largemouth bass, crappie, redear sunfish, channel catfish and bluegill.
Recently opened Chattooga Lakes State Park, three miles southeast of Summerville on Marble Springs Road, offers fishing for largemouth bass, channel catfish and bream.
Bream and Channel Cat The Game and Fish Division, Georgia Department of Natural Resources, operates three public fishing areas. The McDuffie Fishing Area near Thomson includes 15 ponds stocked with bream and channel catfish. The Baldwin State Forest Lakes, four miles from Milledgeville, are open for fishing and have channel catfish, bass and bream. The Arrowhead Public Fishing Area, easily accessible from Rome, Summerville or Calhoun, has two ponds stocked with channel catfish, bass and bream. On the McDuffie, Arrowhead and Baldwin Forest Fishing Areas there is" a charge of $1.00 per day for fishing for all persons between 16 and 65 years of age. Tobesofkee Recreation Area near Macon can be reached from 1-475 and offers good fishing for largemouth bass, crappie, bream and catfish.
(First of a two-part article on the recreational resources available to Georgians. Next week; fighting trout, sea-trout and many others.)

I Straight Line I

Would you please send me some information on how to get rid of large and small type cane reeds?
T. S., Eastman
For an accurate recommendation for controlling weeds and other vegetation, it is imperative that the exact identity of the pest be known. Since several different plants are known as "Cane Reeds", I believe you will have safer and more effective results if you have the plants iden tified. Your County Agricultural Extension Agent will be able to iden tify or have identified the plant in question as well as be able to work with you in solving your problem.
*** Could you give me any information on the cost of about 8 or 9 acres of farmland with a house, barn and chicken house.
D. S., College Park Location is a prime factor in determining land values. Closeness to ur ban areas greatly enhances the value. Small size tracts also usually demand a premium. The average price for all farmland in Georgia in 1972 was $290, a 23% increase over year earlier values. Good farmland in south Georgia in large tracts sells for $400-$500 per acre. House and buildings vary in cost according to size and condition of the structures. New housing construction costs begin at about $15 per square foot. Poletype barn construction costs are about $2 per square foot. The value for existing buildings would need to be discounted by the degree of deterioration and depreciation. This, of course, is not a precise estimate due to the many factors involved.

*** RESPONSE***
Mr. Will Fowler, 1606 Sixth Street, South Cordele 31015, has the blueprints for a butterbean or pea shelter that were requested by Mr. C. C. of Ocilla.
