Serving Farmers Our Only Purpose
The Georgia Development
Authority was created by the
Legislature in 1953 to serve farmers.
One hundred fourteen banks provide
funds for this service. The Authority
services and insures real estate loans
to farmers throughout Georgia.
Presently, we have farm real estate
loans in 129 counties.
Farmers are excellent credit
risks.

lenders. How-

who have been tu-

Loans are made for as much as

property for as long as twenty (20)
years. Qualified local appraisers are

farm land for loans. Our Directors
are all well informed in farm len-
ding.
Local banks do not necessarily
participate in our loans but a great
many do help in the program. If your
local bank does not make the loan, money is usually available elsewhere.
Loans are made for such things as:
Purchase Land
Refinance short-term debts
Farm Buildings
Catfish or other ponds
Land clearing
Livestock and machinery
Pasture development
All loans are secured by a first
mortgage on farm real estate.
Repayment of loans can be made
early with no penalty charged after
the first year. Simple interest charged
only while you use the money and
payments are scheduled to fit farm
income. We promise the fastest
possible service.
Our rates are as low as the money
market permits. We have no "cheap
money". We hope we can be of ser-
vice to you. Why not check with your
banker or attorney. It is very likely
that he does business with us. The
Authority has no state money, but we
are a state Authority. Why not get our brochure, "Money for Georgia
Farmers".

Market News Using
New "Bull" Grades
The Federal-State Livestock
Market News Service's reports began
reflecting the new bull and bullock
standards effective July 1. The new
standards would distinguish for the
first time between beef from young
and older bulls.
Historically, most bull beef has
co.me from older animals and has
been used primarily for processed
meat products. In recent years,
however, there has been increasing
interest in feeding young bulls
specifically for the production of
beef for sale at retail level. This in-
terest stems largely from research
showing that young bulls gain more
rapidly and efficiently than steers. Young bull carcasses will be
graded on the same standards as
steer carcasses. When federally graded, however, the carcasses will

The tissue samples are being sent to the Communicable Disease Center in Atlanta for further lab tests and positive diagnosis.

We Get Letters
Dear Editor:
Anyone with eyes to see, ears to hear and a nose to smell knows the environment in Georgia is full of irritants and pollutants.
The question of whether we have more pollution now than thirty years ago can be debated on and on.
Columns like Mr. Byrd's only sound like a defense of big industry. Surely Mr. Byrd and every Georgia citizen realize that big industry can significantly improve the environment. Some examples: treatment of waste, filters in smoke stacks, health precautions for textile workers, etc.
I believe very strongly in progress. To me progress means all areas of life are better for the common person. But our progress now is wasteful. More highways, more cars, more noise, more polluted lakes and streams, more unnecessary gadgets using more electricity that's what is wrecking our environment and it's not progress to me.
Ms. Mary G. Britting 2175 Tilson Road Decatur, Georgia 30032
Dear Editor:
Thanks for the refreshing editorial written by Roger Byrd and reprinted in the MARKET BULLETIN May 30, 1973. I agree with him 100%.
Let's put some teeth into our anti-litter legislation, because it is individuals who are the cause of much of the pollution on the beaches and waterways, not industry.
The only thing polluting our few acres is trash dumped by
individuals, and insects that a good dose of DDT would get rid of.
I wish the "drumbeaters of doom" would give us more facts and less hysteria.

CHICKEN SPAGHETTI CASSEROLE
1 broiler-fryer chicken
4 qts. water (or enough
(whole or pieces)
to cook chicken in)
2 1/2 tcr 3 pounds
2 1/2 tsps. salt
1 tsp. Accent
1/2 tsp. black pepper
1 tsp. garlic powder
2 cups diced celery
1 Irg. onion (1 cup)
1/2 cup green pepper,
diced
diced (optional)
1/4 cup Mazola Corn
1 am. jar (2 oz.) pimiento,
Oil
drained and chopped
8 oz. thin spaghetti
(optional)
1/2 cup cheese (grated Alcoa Wrap
or shredded)
Place chicken, water, salt, Accent, pepper and garlic powder
in roasting pan and bring to boil. Cook at medium tem-
perature approximately one hour or until chicken is ready to
fall off bones, adding more water if necessary. Saute' until
slightly golden and tender (10 to 15 min.) celery, onion and
green pepper in Mazola Corn Oil. When chicken is tender,
remove from broth and cool. Cook spaghetti in chicken broth
for 9 mins. and do not drain. It may be necessary to add one
or more quarts of water to this broth to have enough liquid to
cook spaghetti. Remove meat from chicken and coarsely
dice. Discard skin and bones. Mix the diced chicken, the
saute'ed ingredients and pimiento to the spaghetti. If it
seems too dry, stir in more water. Place in casserole dish.
Sprinkle cheese over the top and bake in oven for 15 mins. at
400 degrees. Remove from oven and cover with Alcoa Wrap
to keep casserole warm until serving time.

products should be handled carefully. Loss of vitamin A and C occur when the tissues of vegetables are bruised thus using a knife with a sharp blade will help stop this.
One of the best methods of cooking vegetables to conserve maximum food value is to cook them only until tender, in just enough liquid to prevent scorching. Use a pan with a tight fitting lid to keep steam and vapor in so vegetables cook quickly. Use only a small amount of water since water soluble vitamins and some of the minerals will dissolve into the liquid.
Holding and reheating cooked vegetables will cause additional losses of nutrients, particularly vitamin C. Vitamin C loss in cooked vegetables increases with the length of time they are held. If reheated after two or three days refrigeration they have only one-third to one-half as much vitamin C as they originally had.

THE MARKET BULLETIN

Most people are familiar with the
lovely song from the "Sound of
Music" that derived its name from
this low-growing herb of the Alps.
Edelweiss is synonomous with the
Alpine countries of Europe just as apple pie and the "Stars and Stripes" surely remind us of our homeland.
Edelweiss is probably the most
Members of the State 4-H Board of Directors elected at State 4-H Council meeting are, left to right, (seated) Lynn Sands, Daisy, vice chairman; Danny Forehand, Cochran, chairman; Frank Maddox, Madison, vice chairman; (standing) Rita Smith, Jackson; Lynn Harper, Ocilla; Ray Banks, Jonesboro; Lynn Andrews, Toccoa, and Terry Yarbrough, Athens. They will be installed for a year term at State 4-H Congress in Atlanta in August.
Improper Food Handling sought after souvenir of European
travelers. It is an emblem of purity and the name means "noble white".

sely covers the floral leaves. It is a small plant which reaches
a height of no more than 12 inches. The star-like cluster of woolly floral leaves which surround the true flowers attract attention and are often pressed for bookmarks and dried floral pictures.
For years it was thought that Edelweiss could not survive in the United States because it was found growing primarily in the higher altitudes of Europe. However, it has been planted and flourished in rock gardens which are subject to very cold weather in the winter and full sun in the summer.

The stability of nutrients in food varies greatly. Losses of vitamin C, A, and
the B, vitamins, and Joss of some minerals is a natural occurrence in fruits and
vegetables.; but proper storage and preparation in the home can decrease the
loss of nutritive value. The best safeguard is a broad knowledge of the storage
methods for each product.
In storing fresh fruits and vegetables, the length of time, the

temperature, and the humidity affect the retention of nutrients. Most fresh
vegetables will keep well at nearfreezing temperatures and high
humidity. Though vitamin C is lost readily in
most fresh vegetables and some fresh

I have been told that you can tell me how to start grapevines that will bear large grapes from seed. I sure would appreciate any information.
R. E., Columbus
The fruit and nut specialist, Mr. C. D. Spivey, would like to discourage you in this thought. If you plant the seed of a grape, just like apples, peaches, pears or any other fruit, you will only get a seedling. You do not get the same kind of fruit from which the seed came. In most cases, you get a much inferior fruit. The only way that you can be sure of getting the same fruit would be to either bud, graft or root a cutting of a vine that you would like to propagate. There is no way of knowing until seeds are planted and plants grow and begin to bear fruit as to the size of fruit, but they would most often produce very small fruit with poor quality. There are several large fruited grapes that can be bought from nurseries. Plants of such are available both of the bunch grape and of the muscadine type.

Please send me some information regarding goat dairying in Georgia. Include, if you would, the laws governing the sale of goat milk to individuals for personal or household uses.
W. B., Nicholson
Goat dairying has attracted very little interest in Georgia and, as a result, has not been developed to any extent, although there are several small family dairies. Recent interest has encouraged a much better market for registered breeding stock in particular. We suggest that you subscribe to "The Dairy Goat Journal", a monthly magazine devoted to the dairy goat industry, at P.O. Box 1908, Scottsdale, Arizona, 85252.
The laws which govern the sale of any milk for human consumption would apply on an individual basis such as you mentioned. There is a limited but good demand for this product. Your local health authorities can give you the necessary information regarding this. We also suggest that you contact Mr. Robert S. Glauer, who is employed by the Cooperative Extension Service of the University of Georgia and is con sidered an authority on dairy goats.

AWAY WITH PAINT ODORS Painting a room in your home? Cut an onion. According to Martha Sershin, home economist with the Cooperative Extension Service, a sliced onion, placed in a room that's being painted, removes paint odor.
FURNITURE SCRATCHES Removing furniture scratches can be as simple as cracking a nut. Just rub a shelled pecan on the scratched area.
