Solving Problems
Of Conservation
The Southern Piedmont Conservation Research Center was established in 1936 to study methods of solving soil erosion problems in the 44 million acres of the Southern Piedmont which extends from Virginia to Alabama.
At that time the Piedmont was characterized by low producti-
|| vity, badly eroded land, and streams that
I were highly polluted with eroded soil. At the time soil
II and water conJ servation research was initiated at the
Center the Chattahoochee River at the Atlanta Water Works intake had a turbidity of approximately 400

ppm due to the soil pollution of its waters. Turbidity is now less than 40 ppm due to research and extensive application of on-land conservation practices.
CONSERVATION RESEARCH The research program at tne
Southern Piedmont Conservation Research Center is still mission oriented and aimed at developing soil- and water-conserving land use practices which protect our natural resources of soil and water from depletion and pollution, and at the same time provides farming methods which permit an economical return for the farmer. Specifically, the
Center provides research support for the Soil Conservation Service.
All research is cooperative with the land grant colleges in the Southeast which serve the Southern Piedmont. In addition, it has cooperative research with the Southeastern Environmental Protection Laboratory, Environmental Protection Administration, Athens, Georgia.
TWO AREAS The Center's research program is generally divided into two broad areas: (1) environmental quality, and (2) plant-soil-water relations. Environmental quality research is studying poultry manure utilization on forage lands, pesticide loss, sediment loss, plant-nutrient loss, and is developing a prediction model for the loss of all agricultural chemicals from farm lands. The Center's plant-soil-water relations research is studying minimum and zero till methods for the production of corn, small grains, and other crops in sod crops; and plant-soil-water relations of corn, peanuts, fertilizer requirements of forage crops, greenhouse production of tomatoes, water movement in, through, and over soils, and microclimate conditions effecting crop production.

Pick Your Own Is Picking Up
New House Fly Control
Reduces Insecticide Use
Muscalure, an attractant for house flies, may substantially reduce the need
for insecticides. Initial ARS field tests show that muscalure more than triples
the response of house flies to several traps and baits now used against these
disease-bearing pests.
ARS chemists collaborated in
developing muscalure, which
originally appeared to act as a sex at-
tractant for male house flies. Field
tests have now shown that muscalure
attracts both sexes.
Pick-your-own fruit and vegetable
operations are becoming very popular across the state with farmers and homemakers alike. And with good reason everyone saves money.
The farmer saves on labor and he can get a better price for his products. The homemaker saves money by going directly to the producer and picking her own.
Georgia Cooperative Extension Service horticulturists C. D. Spivey and Paul Colditz believe that such counties as Fulton, Cobb, Clayton, DeKalb, Gwinnett, Richmond, Bibb, Chatham, Dougherty and other urbanized areas of Georgia could support hundreds of acres of pick-yourown food crops.
Spivey and Colditz note that this type of operation can be a moneymaker although it is not near a metropolitan area.
Chemists tested pairs of baited and unbaited traps in hog, horse, and sheep barns in Florida. The results have implications for poultry houses, dairy barns, homes, or other places infested by flies. Three to twelve times more flies responded to traps baited with muscalure than to unbaited traps. In 24-hour exposures in heavily infested barns, the baited traps caught flies in the presence of other natural attractants: female flies, animal feed, and manure.
Muscalure attracted the greatest number of flies in electric grid traps placed 15 feet apart on barn floors. A pan under the grids contained muscalure-impregnated corncob granules. In efforts to reach the granules, an average of 6,000 flies landed on wires of the grid and were electrocuted, compared to about 350
in the control trap without muscalure.
The horticulturists point out that pick-your-own operations have somewhat of a sentimental appeal to many people. They say that after a .day in the country picking their own vegetables and fruits, people feel they have really accomplished something.
A commercial, granular fly bait containing dichlorvos and trichlorfon was also tested. This bait was treated with muscalure and placed it in small pans on the ground. After 24 hours, pans of treated bait contained an average of 1,000 dead flies, seven times more than the pans

More Soybean Production
In experiments with 1-foot square adhesive-coated Formica panels, treated panels captured an average of

Georgia farmers have expanded their soybean acreage by almost 900% in the last decade yet they still only produce one-half of the beans used in the state. No other crop has experienced this tremendous acreage expansion.
A few stable flies also were captured by various traps. However,
large numbers of unwanted species were not attracted to the traps.
We are frequently asked why we our per acre yield averages have

We Get Letters
Dear Editor:
Just a couple of suggestions that I believe you will be able to appreciate:
I have found that these gallon milk jugs of plastic make wonderful insulators for the electric fence. The handle is just dandy to wire the charged wire to. All you need to make a grand fence is a piece of scrap reinforcing steel long enough to place the fence at the right height. The jug slides down the steel post and costs nothing as they are a matter of garbage disposal in most cases. I had trouble with deer hitting my fence at night but with these white jugs so easily seen and if the posts are too far apart, the surveyors ribbon tied at the right interval will warn the deer.
Finally found an old note book of Manual Arts vintage and it had the information about using a solution of salt peter and water to take our stumps. Bore a hole in the top and pour in the solution. Eventually it will burn when ignited. Been trying to find this formula for years, it seems.

THE MARKET BULLETIN
What is the most popular question
these days regarding trees and
plants? That's easy - our phones have
been ringing and our mail bag full of
questions about the purple flowering
tree that is now in full bloom
throughout Georgia.
Contrary to many ideas, it is not
wild wisteria that has climbed an old
tree, although the cascading purple
blossoms do resemble wisteria at a
distance; it is not a catalpa tree,
although the leaves are similarly
heart-shaped; and more than
anything else, it is not a cottonwood
tree, even though many people think
the seed pods resemble a cotton boll.
It is the Royal Paulownia or Princess
tree that has become a native of our
state.
The Royal Paulownia is a native of
China. It has been planted as an or-
namental tree for many years but has
now become thoroughly naturalized
in Georgia forests. There are about
2,000 seeds in one Paulownia pod,
meaning that one tree could produce
over 21 million seed. The tree grows
rapidly and sprouts are known to
grow over 15 feet in one growing
season.

Soybeans

tilization, and weed control. A statewide survey of growers earlier this year revealed that these three
factors were the major cause of lowyields throughout the state.
Land Selection - As a "step-
child" crop, soybeans were assigned to the worst land on a farm. They were often grown on severely eroded clays and deep droughty sands that were low in fertility. Top production was impossible under these conditions. This year, remove the "stepchild" label from soybeans and plant them on fertile, well-drained loamy soils. Selection of a good productive soil is the basis in a good production program.
Fertilization - In the early 1960's
many growers were of the opinion that soybeans did not need to be fertilized. Perhaps this idea arose from the fact that the soybean is a legume and can obtain its nitrogen from the air. Top growers know that to produce high, economical yields, we must maintain good soil fertility. Phosphate, potash, and lime should be applied based on soil test results. Soybeans grow best on soils with a pH of 6.0 or above. High fertility is good business for any crop. Don't let fertilizer be a limiting factor in your program!
Weed Control - Most growers in the state consider that poor weed control is the number one management factor in soybean production. Weeds cause us millions
TOMATO PLANTS are big sellers now at many of the State Farmers' Markets. E. Hugh Thames, who has worked at the Atlanta Market several decades, sells tomato plants in the Spring that his wife grows in their greenhouse at Red Oak, Ga. "Big Boys", "Better Boys" and "Patio Tomatoes" are most popular with his customers this Spring. Apartment dwellers are growing tomatoes in bushel baskets on their patios. Here, Mrs. Kitty Williamson of Forest Park makes a selection from the "Big Boys."

Please advise the best possible sources for obtaining swan, peafowl and pheasant eggs.
J. S., Moultrie
Our poultry specialist informs us that there are not any hatcheries in
Georgia that could supply you either the young birds or the eggs of
swans, peafowl or pheasants. We suggest that you talk with your county
agricultural agent. He may be able to give you advice about obtaining
them from a local grower.

I have a small horse that has developed warts around his eyes. What can I do for this?
R. A., Chamblee
Most warts are believed to be caused by a virus. Usually, they cause no inconvenience and will disappear spontaneously after a period of a few months. Applications of sweet oil may be of some benefit. If the warts become extremely large and interfere with the horse's vision, surgery for removal would be indicated. * * *
I would like to know if plastic milk jugs can be used to make nests for Martins.
H. V., Blue Ridge
We have heard that it is possible to use gallon plastic milk jugs for Martins. Make a 2 1/2 inch diameter hole about 1/2 inch from the bot tom. Drill two or three small (1/4 inch diameter) holes in the bottom and hang as you would a gourd. This should do very nicely.

I would like to know where to send canned food for examination. I have several cans of a product that I have reason to believe are contaminated.
J. C., Fitzgerald
Please forward any remaining cans of this product to us! Send to: Con sumer Protection Division, Mr. Cliff Ward, Director, Department of Agriculture, 19 Hunter Street, S.W., Atlanta, Georgia, 30334, for in spection. If there is any question as to the edibility of the food, this division is authorized to initiate* a*cti*on in that direction.
Do you know what will kill the moss growing on my asphalt roof without doing any harm to the roof itself?
M. H., Crandall
Copper sulphate spray, or bluestone, will eliminate your problem with moss on the roof.
of dollars loss each year. Adequate weed control usually in-
volves the proper use of herbicides and cultivation combined with a lot of luck from the weatherman. There are a number of herbicides available for use in soybeans. Consult your county agent for those recommended by the Extension Service.
We can change the image of soybeans as a "step-child" this year by devoting more attention to soybeans and using improved production practices; we can produce better yields in the state. Remember, that the poultry industry needs 30 million bushels of beans each year. We need to produce these soybeans in the state!
