Greatest Bargain
Is Still Food
Regardless of what we compare food prices with, over the past twenty years food in the United States has been and still is the greatest bargain any people of any nation at any time have enjoyed.
The food industry has responded to the tremendously incre-
ased demands for more and better food | products by developing the most efficient production, processing and distribution methods. Indeed many members of the industry have not survived the revolutionary changes in efficiency and are no longer with us. To substantiate this statement let us compare the food industry with
I (Our guest columnist this week is Frank Welton, Executive Secretary, Georgia Agribusiness Council, 19 Hunter Street, S. W., Atlanta 30334.)
others of prominence. For example: over the past ten years the price of food at home has gone up 29%, while clothing prices have increased 33%. auto repair and maintenance, 45%; restaurant meals, 52%; dentists fees, 54%; home maintenance and repairs, 56%; public transportation, 63%; physicians fees, 64%; postal costs, 73%; Auto insurance, 81%; movie admission, 101%; hospital room charges, 165%. To bring these figures into sharper focus it should be pointed out that family incomes have increased 60% in the same time period.
If members of our industry are not allowed to take their place with the rest of society in our freeenterprise system, it should be obvious to all that there would be no incentive for anyone to remain in the industry. This could only result in additional shortages and even more serious problems.
The food industry is very sensitive to the needs of those whose incomes have not kept pace with spiraling inflation. As a matter of fact, many people in the industry are in this position, particularly farmers. But we submit that our industry has done less to cause this inflationary spiral than any other.
We acknowledge that food prices have increased dramatically in the past several months, but it could not be otherwise considering basic economic principles. Food prices could not remain unchanged, when the industry is faced with:
1. Increased labor costs 2. Sharply increased domestic demand 3. Increased international affluence and demand 4. Devaluation of the dollar

Attractive, Long-Lasting Results

Diesel Shortage
In Rural Ga.
April 11, 1973
Honorable Tommy Irvin Commissioner of Agriculture Agriculture Building 19 Hunter Street, S. W. Atlanta, Georgia 30334
Dear Tommy: I read with much interest your ar-
ticle on the shortage of Diesel Fuel in this week's issue of Farmers & Consumers Bulletin.
However, without making you mad I think that your article is misleading in that you left the impression from your survey that there is no serious shortage! To me there is a serious shortage as we serve 16 middle Georgia Counties and we are short at least 100,000 gallons per month that we are presently having to purchase for a Black Market price and in some instances we are paying as high as 7 cents per gallon over our normal cost and then beg to get it! I am absorbing this additional cost as long as I can, but if The Oil Industry does not free up some in the very near future, I will be in a position that I will certainly have to pass this cost along to The Farmers.
For your information in Southwest Georgia most Farmers now are paying a premium of 5 and 6 cents per gallon to get Diesel.
Of course the Major Oil Companies will be the first ones to tell you that there is no shortage to the Farmers, they do not wish this end of it to be publicized!
I am on the firing line with well over a million Big Country Dollars invested in my Oil Business and what I have told you above is the truth.
I can show you farmers right now in my territory that do not have any diesel now and no hopes of finding a supplier.
Thanks again for your prompt response to my request of giving the shortage some publicity, but again I say that it was mis-leading. Yours Sincerely, Buddy M. NeSmith, President Buddy NeSmith Oil Company, Inc. P. O. Box 509 Hawkinsville, Georgia 31036 Telephone (912) 892-9176
(Editor's note: In last week's
BULLETIN we published an article concerning the diesel oil shortage
which was written as a result of con-
tacting most of the major oil com-
panies. We have since heard from a
number of our distributors who have
expressed the same opinion as Mr.
NeSmith in his letter. We think Mr.
NeSmith said it better than we could and we are therefore publishing his letter.)
Lumber Big Item
About half of the wood produced in the United States is used in the manufacture of lumber. The second most important timber product is pulpwood.

Come From Mulching Ornamentals

Mulching is one of the most beneficial gardening practices yet it is one of the

most neglected practices in the culture of flowers and shrubs in Georgia. There

are a number of beneficial results from applying a mulch to the surface of the

soil.

_ _ _____ _

It can reduce weed' seed ger-

mination, prevent crusting of the soil

surface and can moderate soil tem-

peratures. The most useful effect of a

mulch in Georgia is that it reduces

loss of moisture from the soil.

It allows water to move down into

the ground, but prevents rapid

evaporation of water back into the

air. In Georgia, many flowers and

Flowers such as pansies respond to the use of a mulch.

shrubs are injured as a result of an uneven moisture supply. Dry periods often occur during the months from

April through October.

Therefore, a mulch is most im-

portant during the later spring, sum-

mer and early fall months. It will be

necessary to water mulched or-

namentals during long, dry periods.

Watering is required about half as

often as for unmulched plants, thus

greatly reducing the water bill

during a long drought. Watering

properly mulched plants ap-

proximately once a week should be

sufficient if heavy watering is done at

each application.

In addition, an organic mulch is

very beneficial in moderating soil

temperatures. In Georgia, soil tem-

peratures become quite high during

the summer months. Most mulching

materials will reduce soil tem-

peratures several degrees as com-

The mulch should extend beyond the dripline of shrubs for best

pared with an unmulched area. A mulch is equally beneficial

results.

Decorating Easier Eggs

Can Be Fun For Everyone

Decorating Easter eggs can be fun for everyone in the family. Get an old shoe
box and start gathering nick nacks from around the house. These might include: buttons, dried beans and beads, yarn, ribbon, pieces of felt and other materials, pipe cleaners, doilies, bottle caps, pill boxes, paper of various types and colors, and any other objects that can be suitable for decorating.

In addition to a box of nick
nacks, have on hand Easter egg dye, color crayons or paraffin, and glue.
To make designs on the eggs you may either use a color crayon to draw objects or designs on the eggs, or use melted paraffin. If you use the latter apply the wax with a small paint brush, a string, or a tooth brush to make varying patterns. Then the egg is dyed. The part of the
egg with crayon or wax on it will not take the color of the dye.
A Chinaman: Use an egg that has
been dyed yellow. Glue frayed black yarn on to make a mustache, and braid yarn for a pigtail. Use strips of bl-
ack paper to make slant eyes and a mouth. The
cap is the top of a pill box covered with colored paper. Paste on a pea,
bean, etc. for the ball on the top. A Boy: Glue yarn on for hair.

Use beads or buttons for the eyes and nose. Cut ears out of paper. Make a tie out of cloth or ribbon.
A Girl: Glue yarn on for the hair. Use a small piece of la-
ce, paper or material for a hat. Cut eye lashes out of paper or felt, and cut a red heart for a mouth. Note: Stand the egg up in a small paper cup or a bottle cap. The cardboard center of paper towel rolls can be used. Cut them in sections then cover with lace, material or a pleated doilie to make a dress. A Pig: Glue beans on for feet (Continued On Page 8)

We Get Letters
Dear Editor:
If any subscriber knows what direction to turn a sundial to install, please reply.
Mrs. Paul Davis 420 Hickory St. Rossville, Georgia 30741
Dear Editor:
If I had the largest sheet of paper, all the ink and the broadest vocabulary I could still only say "Thank you dear friends." The response to my letter for my daughter's wedding scrapbook was just wonderful. Most people said "She probably already knows, but ..." No, I knew some as my mother did but we couldn't remember them all to tell her, so it was big news to her. From the simplest to the hardest, from the funniest to the most sincere, young and old, please let me say the words we hear daily but are meant from the bottom of our hearts "Thank You". Anyone who still wants to add to our book, they surely would be appreciated.

While the pomegranate is by far not one of our most important fruits, it is one of the most ancient. It is mentioned frequently in the Old Testament and is thought to be a native of Persia. Mythology regards the pomegranate as a symbol of fertility and historians say that they were cultivated and grown in the Hanging Gardens of Babylon.
Pomegranates are considered to be one of nature's most unusual fruits. They are about the size of an orange with a hard leathery skin ranging in color from deep purplish-red to light yellow. The inside flesh of the fruit is brilliant red with thousands of little seeds. Although the seeds do get in the way of chomping through the fruit, the delicious sweet meat is worth the effort.
Punica Granatum is a tender, deciduous shrub or small tree widely grown in tropical and subtropical climates. Although it will grow as far north as Washington, D.C. it grows best in warmer climates. It usually grows into a large bush but often forms a tree up to 25 feet high. The small deep green leaves are willow-like and about three inches long.
Many people grow the plant not for its fruit but for its beautiful fireengine red flowers which are about two inches in diameter. The shrub should be encouraged to form a tree in either case by removing the lower branches.
From one pomegranate fruit you can propagate enough plants for your whole yard since they sprout easily from seeds. However, the best way to increase your supply is to plant the numerous shoots that spring up around the base of the tree.
Besides being a beautiful flowering shrub and bearing delicious fruit, the pomegranate also has other important qualities. The'bark is used for tanning; the roots have medicinal properties used in the preparation of prescription remedies; and the dried rind of the fruits has been used in cases of diarrhea and dysentery.

5. A balance of payments problem 6. Grain sales for export increased
7. Dramatic feed price increases 8. Unfavorable harvest con-
ditions last fall 9. Cost including government regulations
As these economic factors exerted their influence many costs were absorbed by the industry until it was no longer possible for it to do so and the consumer had to become, rather abruptly, concerned with the problem. Indeed while the industry tried to cope with the situation without involving the consumer
many agribusinesses here in Georgia closed their doors because they sim-
ply could not go on losing money. One solution to the problem we
have been discussing is to increase production, but without adequate incentives no farmer is going to increase the investment necessary for preparing new lands for cultivation, enlarging herd size and adding new equipment.

Mulching

(Continued From Page 1)
during the winter in reducing cold injury to the shallow roots of ornamentals. A mulch, of course, only protects the plant parts that it covers, and thus cannot reduce cold injury to the top of a plant.
A mulch can do much to reduce the never-ending task of weeding

(This is the first of a two part ar

ticle on mulching practices by

Gerald E. Smith, Extension Hor

ticulturist, Floriculture and Nursery,

Cooperative Extension Service,

University of Georgia, Athens,

30601.)

around flowers and shrubs. Most mulching materials reduce weed seed

germination and growth. Even when

the weeds do grow, they are easier to pull than when they are growing in

an unmulched soil.

Few mulching materials are ef-

fective in preventing growth of perennial weeds and grasses, such as

Florida betony and bermudagrass. A

possible solution for these problem areas is to place polyethylene plastic on the ground and then to cover the plastic with a more attractive mulch such as pine straw. Both clear and

colored plastic may be used. A 4 mil.

or 6 mil. thickness is usually selected. This will effectively control all
weeds with the exception of nutsedge

(nut grass), which will grow through the plastic.
A common problem with mulched

shrubs and flower beds is keeping

bermuda-grass and other lawn grasses from creeping into the

mulched area. One of the most satisfactory approaches is to spray

with the herbicide dalapon

(Dowpon). Spraying the material on

the actively growing grass in a narrow band around the edge of the mulch will effectively keep the grass

in check. Three applications during

the growing season should be sufficient to keep the runners killed.

Ask your County Extension agent

for details. Mulching can be overdone,

especially in heavy soils. If the material is 6 to 12 inches deep after settling, it is possible that root injury

will result due to excessive soil

moisture and poor aeration. Mulching is not recommended

around plants located in soils that tend to remain too wet.
A mulch in this situation will only aggravate the water-logged soil con-

dition. Mulches should not be piled

heavily against the trunk of shrubs and young trees. This may result in

mice damage to the trunks during the

winter months.

Can you give me some information on the culture of Cannabis saliva?
R. H., Woodbury
The lawman does not allow "Straight Line" to give out in formation on growing Cannabis saliva, commonly called marijuana. . .shame, shame.
*** What is the law governing the disposal of dead animals in the state of Georgia?
K. R., Gibson
Section 3 of the Georgia Dead Animal Act states: "It shall be unlawful for any person caring for, or owning, any animal that has died or which has been killed to abandon said animal including the blood and/or parts thereof on his own land, or upon the land of another, without first having the other's permission for burial or burning as prescribed in this Act, or regulations adopted pursuant to this Act. Arrangements for proper burial or burning must be made with a city or county official to dispose of such animals in a city or county dump. Under no conditions may dead animals be abandoned in wells or open pits of any kind on private or pub*lic* l*and."
Could you please tell me the best way to get rid of stumps? Also, what will keep moles from destroying flowers?
C. T., Clarkesville
We suggest that you cover pine stumps with soil to speed up decomposition. Any hardwood stumps may be covered with soil also or they may be treated with a stump remover, available at garden stores, and later burned. We mailed you a pamphlet on the con trol of moles. Some of our readers say that castor beans planted in the infested area work wonders in ridding moles.
