Good NewsFor Dogs, People

In January of this year the prestigious National Academy of Sciences (NAS) issued a report which should interest all farmers and con-

sumers in Georgia. The report, "New National Re-
commendations for Animal Rabies "Vaccination, ' was designed
to serve as a

basis for standardizing anim-

al rabies vacc-

ination throughout the United

States.
tne re '
port was is-

sued,

there

was some con-

fusion about rabies vaccination. Rabies vaccination laws and

regulations varied among the states and often among counties and cities within the same state. For instance, a dog owner might wonder why he was

required to have his pet vaccinated every year, while someone in a nearby county or state was required to have his animal vaccinated only

Our guest columnist this week is Dr. U. S. G. Kuhn, HI. Dr. Kuhn is Chief of Treponemal Research at CDC and is Chairman of the Committee on Public Health of the Georgia Veterinary Medical Health
Assn. ____________________ every three years. Veterinarians would often find themselves frustrated in attempts to explain why they used a certain type of vaccine for one person's dog and not for
another's. The reasons for this were
twofold: first, laws and regulations are usually slow in catching up with scientific advances. Second, though longer lasting vaccines were on the market, some had not been evaluated to determine if they would in fact do the job they were claimed to do.
To answer this question, the Center for Disease Control mounted a long-needed definitive study. Hundreds of purebred dogs were immunized with the commercially
available vaccines. Then, at certain set time intervals,
groups of the immunized animals were challenged with virulent rabies virus. At the end of three years, the answers were available. The National Academy of Sciences then appointed a blue-ribbon committee which studied the results of the experiment in context -with immunization practices, laws, and the practical problems of rabies control, and issued the report.
In its report, the Academy recognizes live rabies vaccine as the most immunogenic type, the one that gives the strongest immunity. It is administered at three to four months of age, at one year, and at three year intervals thereafter. Killed vaccines prepared from tissue culture are less immunogenic. Two doses three to four weeks apart are administered

Quality A Must In Peanut Seed

By: J. Frank McGill Extension Agronomist.Peanuts

Horse Show Edition
Dixon Blackwood, son of Mr. and Mrs. Dick Blackwood, Social Circle, is a 4-H'er and is busily preparing for the 1973 horse show season. Helping Dixon are Jose Hilrman and Harris Blackwood, also 4-H'ers. Dixon is shown on the 1972 World's Champion Juvcnilly Racking horse, Java's Secret Agent, that he shows.

Remember To Heed
Horse Protection
The 1973 horse show season is rapidly approaching. And, with it, comes a reminder that the regulations of the Horse Protection Act must be met by persons participating in or holding such events.

Germination and vigor of Georgia's certified seed peanuts is somewhat lower than last year. Although the majority of the State's certified seed peanuts will still meet the minimum germination requirements of 75%, Georgia has voted to certify seed peanuts germinating between 60-75% provided the certified tag is stamped "Below Standard in Germination".
The supply of certified seed peanuts germinating 75% or above will not be sufficient to meet the demand, particularly the Florunner variety. Therefore, some growers will be faced with planting certified peanuts that germinate less than 75%' but no lower than 60%. Certain peanut seed processors with substantial quantities germinating between 70-74% are planning to tag them 70%. However, the tag must still be stamped "Below Standard in Germination" if certified.
Peanut growers being made aware of this peanut seed situation should contact their county agent for a copy of Peanut Release No. 65 which outlines specific recommendations concerning adjustment of seeding rate, planting dates, depths and herbicide placement designed to secure and maintain a good stand of peanuts as we face the planting season.
Since the quantity of high quality Florunner seed may be in tight supply, certain growers may do well to consider planting a few more Florigiant peanuts in 1973.
provided: 1. They have had previous expedience growing Florigiant peanuts. 2. Their soil type is a light textured sandy loam soil.
LP Gas Meters

The act specifically prohibits the practice of "soring" a horse to make it perform better. Exhibitors may not show a horse that has been made sore; owners may not permit their horses to be shown if it has been sored; and show management may not permit sored horses to compete.
The act also prohibits transporting a sored horse across a state line with the intent of showing it. using foreign substances on the pastern urea: selling a horse's hoof at an illegal toe and heel ratio and using illegal boots.
The Horse Protection Act provides for both civil and criminal penalties that can involve as many as three parties in each violation of anti-soring regulations. Willful violations carry penalties of up to $2,000 in fines or six months in prison, or both. Unintentional violations can bring up to S 1,000 in fines.

With the purchase of a new space-age shaped liquid meter prover last spring,

the Georgia Department of Agriculture Weights and Measures section began

testing metering devices used on LP (liquified petroleum) propane and butane

deliveryJ trucks.

^T,.he new regul, atory, consumer

protection program has been rcvvar-

Within the initial test period of eight months (May thru December) 300 scries of tests were run on trucks in cities, hamlets and farms.
Of the total number of units tested. 145 units v'48.j r ; ) were within tolerance. Eight of those had little or no error in metering. Fifty were under regi ster ing (favoring the customer). The other eighty-two units were overregistering the delivery of fuel in favor of the seller.
Among those outside of tolerance, there were ten units delivering more fuel than was being charged for.
One hundred forty five additional units were charging for more fuel than delivered in amounts up to (17) gallons, as registered on one unit.

We Get Letters
Dear Editor: Consumers and farmers owe thanks to Commissioner
Tommy Irvin for his lucid and needed article on milk pricing. The people ought to be told that the farmer receives less than 40 cents out of each dollar spent for food and fiber; that of this 40 cents, after giving the machinery, fuel, finance, fertilizer and other partners their share, get to keep for his own less than 20 cents out of the dollar you spend. In 1972 the farmers had a total net income of $19 billion in an American economy of $1100 billion. Truly a pittance for all the work he does and the goods he delivers. He is not paid half enough.
Look at these facts: No nation has ever been fed for so small a part of its total economy; not only fed, but the best fed in all history. This providing for us is done far better and cheaper than we, who work at other things could do it for ourselves, because our farmers are not the rustic hicks some call them, but the greatest experts in the world.

Two recent analysis point up that a substantial portion of the bill at the check-out counter pays for the advertising and the packaging of the foods they buy.
A U.S.D.A. report says that out of every dollar spent for food excluding imports and seafood approximately 9 cents goes for the package. The figure varies, depending on what you're buying. Packaging took 8.8 billion dollars of the 101.6 billion dollars that food shoppers spent in 1970.

Today both wooden and aluminum martin houses may be purchased ready-made and are available through such outlets as hardware stores and feed and seed stores, but it is possible to make your own martin house. The sketches (figures 4 and 5) show how you can make what is called an add-on apartment house. It merely consists of a number of layers of apartments.
How To Do
As a rule, you might start with just one layer and then as your colony grows add one and perhaps

(Second of a two part story on purple martins by R. L. Carlton, Extension Wildlife Specialist, Cooperative Extension Service, U. G. A., Athens 30601.)_______
a second layer on top of the first. Generally, 24 nesting compartments would be all that you would try to have for a single colony.
First of all, use as light a material as you can; you want to be able to take the house up and down for cleaning and storing. The compartments should be approximately 6" x 6" on the side and 6" deep.
Entry holes should be two and one-half inches in diameter with the lower part an inch above the bottom of the nesting compartment. Except for the lowermost layer, the center compartment does not have a floor. This gives a central air passage for ventilation.
Make certain that you drill 5/16" diameter holes on the interior walls of each compartment so as to allow air to circulate and be drawn through the central air passage. The roof compartment should be provided with ventilation holes that are screened so as to prevent
Figure 4
the entry of starlings or sparrows. Don't forget to leave a hole in the floor of this roof section to communicate with the central air passage.
The roof section and separate layers are held together by means of hooks and eyes. Paint the house both inside and outside with white paint. The white paint on the outside will help to keep the house from becoming unbearably hot during the summer. The white inside will help to prevent starlings from using the house. Starlings prefer a dark cavity, whereas the martins will use one which is lighter.
When you are ready to put your house up, place a small pinch of
sulfur dust in each compartment. This will help to control mites. Put the house on a pole 15 to 30 feet tall. The lower the vegetation in the area of the house, the lower the pole can be. If you can, make certain the pole will allow you to take the martin house down so that it can be cleaned in the fall and taken in for the winter.
However, should you decide to install the house permanently, make certain that you have some way of cleaning out the nest compartments and be sure to provide plugs for the entry holes to prevent use of the boxes by starlings and sparrows.
Fall Cleaning
When you take the house down for the fall, clean it thoroughly. Make certain all the old nesting material is removed. Dust the house completely with sulphur. Houses should be placed out again the following spring at about the end of January when the martins return.
Although martins do feed on flying insects, their ability as mosquito control agents has been over-rated. Studies on the food habits of the martins are few and far between, the earliest having been done about 1918, others, being continued into the present time. These studies indicate that

mosquitoes provide a very small part of the food taken by martins.
Other evidence which would indicate that martins are probably not much of a control agent lies in times at which the two species are active. Martins actively seek food just after dawn until after dusk. On the other hand, most mosquitoes are active at twilight or at night.
Mosquitoes spend most of the day on the ground or in vegetation close to the ground. The only time
mosquitoes are very active during the day is when they are disturbed; thus mosquitoes would be available for only a very short period of time at sunrise and at sunset, and then only if the birds were feeding near the ground. So it appears that the martin plays very little role in the control of mosquitoes.
Among the bugs that martins do eat are butterflies, beetles, flies, damsel flies, dragon flies, and grasshoppers. In conclusion, although the purple martin does not appear to be our answer to mosquito control, we still have every reason to encourage it to nest in and around our homes for the insects that it does eat and for the beautiful bird that it is.
For additional information on martin houses and houses and feeders for other birds, ask your County Extension Agent for Bulletin 645, "Building Wildlife Houses and Feeders."

when the dog is between three and four months of age, and annually thereafter. The third type of vaccine is made from nervous system tissue. It is given in a single dose at three to four months and then at one year intervals.
All of these vaccines, when administered on the proper schedule, will do the job of protecting our dog population against rabies. And when we protect our dog population we are building the best possible barrier around our human population.
As we probably all know, rabies is spread principally by animals which are equipped to bite. These include dogs, of course, but also many wild animals. Right now half the counties in Georgia have rabies in their wildlife. Raccoons and, to a lesser extent, foxes, are the species in which rabies has been diagnosed most frequently. Needless to say, this makes it especially important for farm families and country and suburban dwellers to have their pet, sporting, or working dogs protected.
The Georgia Veterinary Medical Association has been concerned for some time about the conflict or disparity between the various rabies control regulations and was ready without delay to endorse the NAS recommendations. Fortunately, our state rabies control law is so constructed that it allows immediate implementation of the recommendations.
Vaccination has been largely responsible for reducing canine rabies in Georgia from 385 cases in 1946 to three this past year. It is now doubly important that we keep our guard up. The new uniform regulations will help us do this better and easier.

PASTRY CRUSTS

Pastry crusts frozen before

baking are more tender and

flaky than those frozen after

baking. It's a fact, according

to U. S. Department of

Agriculture

home

economists. The experts also

suggest baking with oil or

using less fat to reduce the

crust's calorie count.

The Quince, Cydonia oblonga, is a native of Asia and has been cultivated for over 4,000 years. It is found mentioned in Greek and Roman mythology as they considered it sacred to the Goddess of Love. A "gift of quince" was truly a "gift of love" meaning the same as an engagement ring in modern times.
Other historical accounts of the quince assert that it was the beauty and delightful fragrance of the quince that tempted Mother Eve. Whatever the case may be, it is one of the oldest known cultivated garden fruits. In fact, the early settlers of this country brought the seeds with them in 1628 so they would not be deprived of the delicious fruit.
Perhaps the best-known quince products include the reddishgolden jelly, preserves, jams, honey and marmalade. However, quinces have also been used in other ways. The blossoms were made into perfume; the fruit provides the base for a natural hair dye and hair lotion; quince syrup has been an old-time standby for relief of colds, coughs and other throat ailments.
Quince trees are grown throughout Georgia and will thrive wherever peach trees grow. Their wood, however, damages easily to sub-freezing temperatures. They must have good drainage, prefer a heavy soil and need good air circulation. It is not often that quince trees need pruning since it is a slow - growing tree. Heavy pruning stimulates vigorous growth which is undesirable. Vigorous-growing twigs are very susceptible to fire blight.
The fruit of the tree should be allowed to hang on the branches until it is fully matured and ripened, making it ready for harvest about mid-October. Whatever you do, don't remove the fruit if it takes more than a slight pull. Otherwise the quinces will quickly shrivel and spoil. Well-ripened fruit gives off a powerful aroma and will practically drop in your hand when touched.

National Survey
On Farm Dollars
How much does it cost to live on a farm?
Starting in April the U.S.D.A. will conduct a nationwide survey to collect current information about the dollars spent and purchases made by farm people for family living needs.
Frasier T. Galloway, Statistician in Charge of the Georgia Crop Reporting Service stated that the survey results will update the important prices paid index, an economic indicator of how farmers are doing compared with other groups in the economy. The index also provides guidelines for farm policy and programs.
It's been nearly two decades since a Farm Family Living Expenditure Survey was conducted. Rising costs and changing living habits have greatly altered the kinds and quantities of goods and services purchased.
Farmers have become greater consumers of manufactured goods which means an important source of income for rural merchants and small town economies. The survey will help establish the economic impact of the Nation's 2.8 million farms some 9.5 million people.
Visits will be made in April and July of 1973 and again in January 1974 to collect data. All individual reports will be kept confidential and only regional and national information summaries will be published. Georgians are urged to cooperate if contacted.

Karen McGuire, a 4-H'er from Athens, received the trophy for Grand Champion in the recent State.lunior Steer Show held in Athens. Shown with Karen is Commissioner of Agriculture Tommy Irvin and her champion, "Ted". Reserve Champion went to Sii/annc Miller of Athens.

I am interested in buying some peafowl to raise but their awful screams will bother my grandmother. I have heard that their vocal chords can be cut by a vet. How involved would this operation be and what would be the effect on the peacock besides the loss of his voice?
T. P., Warm Springs

One of the state veterinarians says that he has never heard of this operation being done on peafowls, though it is occasionally performed on dogs to stop them from barking. We suggest that you contact your local veterinarian and get his opinion on this operation.

I noticed in the Market Bulletin that linseed oil will give a horse a slick and glossy coat of hair. Will this also work on cattle? If so, where can I find it? I have only been able to find the type that is used in paint.

Our state veterinarian says that it would work on cattle. It might prove somewhat expensive unless it were to be used on show cattle or cattle for exhibition purposes. We do not recommend buying linseed oil at paint stores as these preparations sometimes contain lead which would be poisonous to your animals. Be sure and get raw linseed oil, preferably from your druggist. If this is not available, you might contact your feed dealer for the possibility of adding linseed meal to your cattle ration, which should accomplish the same purpose.
