Testing Program
There's just one way to tell how much lime and fertilizer to put on a field crop, around a fruit tree or shrub, or on a lawn. That's by using a soil test.
The Cooperative Extension Service, University of Georgia
College of Agriculture, has offered farmers and growers a soil testing service since the early 1950's. At first tests were actually run by research staffers at three experiment stations. Since 1970, however, extension has been handling this service. 1970 was the year Georgia's new Soil Testing and Plant Analysis Laboratory one of the finest in

the nation was constructed on the University campus in Athens.
One thing the new building and facilities did provide for a comprehensive soil testing and plant analysis program.
Technicians
The new lab and its 8,000 square feet of floor space is located at 2400 College Station Road. In addition to myself, the program employs a graduate analytical chemist, Dr. Robert A. Isaac, and eleven laboratory technicians and assistants.
Equipment includes the latest analytical instruments. These are capable of handling 600 to 800 soil samples which arrive daily at the Lab during peak periods.
Last year some 55,000 soil samples and over 3,000 plant tissue samples were analyzed for thousands of Georgia growers. In fact, the number of samples has increased every year since 1970.
More and more, farmers are recognizing the importance of these two testing techniques in producing food, feed and fiber ~ as well as ornamental plants.
Serves Everyone Services of the laboratory are available to all Georgians. Every county extension office has information leaflets, sampling instructions and mailing kits* for use in submitting samples. In addition, the lab provides analytical services to researchers at the University of Georgia and elsewhere. The largest instrument in the building is called a "direct reading emission spectrograph." In less than one minute, it can analyze plant tissue for 16 - that's right,

'73 Go. General Assembly
Passes Farm Legislation
Stewart Bloodworth, Perry, has been named as one of the four men chosen as America's Outstanding Young Farmers in a recent contest held by the Young Farmer Congress in St. Paul Minnesota. Bloodworth operates a 2,038 acre farm near Perry and raises a variety of crops and livestock. This is the 17th year for the contest sponsored by the United States Jaycees and General Motors.
Weight Shortages
Found By Ag Dept.
Weight shortages have been discovered by the Georgia Department of Agriculture in bags of pine bark and pine nugget mulch materials shipped in from out of state and sold through some Atlanta area chain stores.
The Weights and Measures Laboratory of the Department of Agriculture checked on mulching materials produced by Klumb Company of Gulfport, Miss., and Green Life Products of West Point, Virginia, and found bags of pine mulch material from both companies short in volume as well as weight.
"Retail outlets where we have found the products involved have cooperated wonderfully to insure customer protection," said Commissioner of Agriculture Tommy Irvin.

The 1973 regular session of the Georgia General Assembly ended on Friday, March 16. The session was a successful one for agricultural
legislation and appropriations.
Several bills and resolutions were passed which affect the welfare of Georgia farmers and consumers. Following is a breakdown of several bills and
resolutions of particular interest to Georgia farmers that were passed and await
the Governor's signature:
H. B. No. 201 sets standards for treatment and inspection of treated posts, poles, piling, timber, laminated timber, lumber and plywood when produced for sale in Georgia.
H. B. No. 607 requires that dead livestock and poultry be either burned, buried or rendered. This bill also makes it unlawful to abandon dead livestock or poultry on the land of others.
H. B. No. 994 requires that cattle and swine not be taxed for ad valorem purposes until they have reached the age of production.
H. R. No. 337 by the House Agriculture Committee urges Congress to support all farm crops at least 85 percent of parity.
The Reorganization Act of 1972 gave gasoline filling pump in-
Pesticide License
Deadline March 31
Commercial applicators of agricultural pesticides are reminded that they have until March 31 to make application for licenses under the state's new pesticide use and applicator's act.
Heretofore agricultural pesticides have been regulated in Georgia only from the standpoint of product registration, labeling and chemical analysis. The new act will assure proper application and adequate pesticide application for the farmer and consumer.
Farmers are exempt from the law in the use of pesticides on their own land or in assisting neighbors with pesticide application.
spection for metering accuracy and octane standards to the Georgia Department of Agriculture.
S. B. No. 73 provides for a civil penalty of up to $1,000 for violation of the gasoline inspection law. This bill also requires truth in advertising the price of gasoline so that the price on the pump shall be the same as that used in the advertising media. This act also requires that where free gifts or services are offered the offerer shall have a sufficient number of suth gifts on hand to supply the demand and shall be prepared to provide the free services as ad-
vertised. S. B. No. 201 revises the
Veterinary Practice Law to permit
doctors of veterinary medicine to employ up to two technicians to draw blood samples.
S. R. No. 76 by the Senate Agriculture Committee asked Congress to support the price of milk at 85 percent of parity.
The members of both the House and Senate Agriculture Committees were alert to legislation which could inadvertantly adversely affect agriculture.
There were five ecology bills
passed dealing with the control and use 'of ground water, solid waste management, sewage discharge, emitting air contaminants, and water supply quality control. These bills were amended to protect the agricultural use of water and to permit agricultural waste and sewage to be disposed of in such a manner as to not adversely effect agriculture and at the same time to

Attracting Purple Martins
Now is the time of year when many of the birds with which we are familiar begin to return. Although we enjoy most of the birds with which we come in contact, there are some which tend to excite our imaginations and feelings more than others.
Foremost among this group are
the swallows; and of these, perhaps none has struck our fancy like the purple martin (Progne subis).
Their aerial acrobatics and the fact that they eat flying insects have endeared the martins to many.
Not too long ago, every farm house had its martin boxes, martin
gourds, or other martin facility put up with the hope that martins would be attracted and live on the homestead. Today, martin houses are not as common as they once were, but given the resurgence of
interest in the environment and in non-chemical methods of pest control, there has been an increased interest in the martin.
As people move from the city to the suburbs and to the country, we receive more and more requests for inform.ation on feeding habits, site requirements, and housing requirements for martins.
The martin is not a year-round
Fireproof Sleepwear
As of July 3, 1973, it will be unlawful to market children's sleepwear size 0 to 6x which has not met flame retardant standards set by the Federal Trade Commission.
Consumer acceptance of flame retardant sleepwear will determine its future in the market place.

part of the fall. The winter is spent in South America. When the birds arrive, old birds tend to return to areas in which they have nested before, whereas young birds seek out new nesting areas.
Once nesting sites have been located, nest building begins. Nests

Guava is the tropical fruit of the guava tree, which is a member of the Myrtle family. These small trees are found throughout the West Indies, Brazil, Mexico, and warmer climates in the United States.
The fruit of this tree is about the size of a small apple covered by a thin skin which can range in color from yellow to red and from oval to perfectly round. The guava itself is sweet and juicy but is best when cooked for use in jellies, preserves, etc.
Nutritionally, guavas are an excellent source of vitamins A and C as well as many minerals. The guava can play an important role in one's diet but because of the characteristic odor of fresh guavas, many people overlook its value.
Guava trees will bear fruit at an early age and in abundance. There are numerous varieties which have been developed for flavor, color and adaptability. As a result, guavas will thrive on practically any soil except marsh lands. They prefer good drainage but the soil needs to be moist for them to bear

Soil, Planting

Besides doing all the plant tissue work requested by farmers, the spectrograph has also been analyzing over 25,000 plant samples a year for agronomic and horticultural researchers in the state. This support will mean higher, more profitable yields and better quality products from Georgia fields and orchards in the future.
Testing Feeds Soil and plant analysis is not all the laboratory does. It tests feeds for protein and mineral content, water from fish ponds to determine lime and fertilizer needs, and water from ponds, lakes, rivers and wells to determine its quality for irrigation purposes. And then there is the ecology. Everybody has heard about that, and Georgia's Soil Testing and Plant Analysis Laboratory is playing an increasingly important role here. Our analytical capabilities and skills are being brought to bear on possible problems with mercury, cadmium and lead, for example. Researchers as well as producers are turning to us for assistance. In just two short years, the laboratory has built a reputation for excellence in soil testing and plant analysis. Georgia farmers and growers have the best analytical and advisory service to be found anywhere in the Southeast. And people in many other endeavors are turning to the Lab for solutions to problems peculiar to their fields. May we serve you? We are as near as your county Extension agent.

Have Record Year
As 1973 spring planting time draws nearer, Georgia peanut producers continue to bask in the lime-light of their record 1972
peanut crop. Peanuts stepped far out front again
in 1972 as the state's leading money crop reaching almost one-third (30.1 per cent) of the total value of all crops produced in Georgia.

Legislation
(Continued from page 1)
protect the general public.
Appropriation for agricultural
research this year is the greatest in the state's history. More than three and one-half million dollars in new money was appropriated to be used in research and promotion in the Experiment Stations, University of Georgia, Georgia School of Technology and by the Extension Service. Some of these funds will be used in the purchase of much needed new equipment and in basic research in needed agricultural fields.
Commissioner of Agriculture Tommy Irvin praised members of the House and Senate Agriculture Committees and members of the Appropriations committee for their "diligence, foresight and plain hard work in preparing and, passing legislation which will benefit the Georgia farmer and the consumer.
"Due to their efforts and the cooperation of many other members of the General Assembly, much legislation of benefit to agriculture was passed," Irvin said.

are made from such things as twigs, weeds, dead leaves, coarse grasses and similar materials. The female will lay three to eight white eggs. These are incubated by her for about 13 days. Feeding and care of the young is undertaken by both male and female. The young will stay in the nest for three to four weeks and even after leaving the nest will still return to the nest site for about a week to ten days, after which time they leave.
(This is the first part of a two-part story by R. L. Carlton, Extension Wildlife Specialist, Cooperative Extension Service, U. G. A., Athens, 30601.)
What kinds of places do martins prefer for their spring and summer homes? In general, martins prefer that their houses be relatively open areas; if possible, never put a martin house closer than 30 feet to a tree. You can place houses closer than this to human dwellings and very often martins may even nest closer than this to trees, but if you don't have to, don't.
Put your house further away from houses and trees. If you can, place your martin house near utility wires. For whatever reason, martins love to socialize on telephone and electric wires. If you have open water nearby, this very often will help attract the birds; however, such water is not. absolutely necessary.
Open fields near by are a powerful attraction. This is because martins feed almost exclusively on flying insects. Flying insects are
Figure 2
much more readily taken over an open field than amongst trees.
Martin houses can take on a variety of shapes and can be made from a variety of materials. The figures which accompany this article will give you some idea of how you, with the materials you have available to you, might construct a martin house and hence attract a colony of martins.
It's important to keep in mind that martins are colonial birds, that is, they like to nest together. For the most part, separate, widely scattered houses capable of keeping only a single pair are generally unsuccessful.
What we have to do is cluster our houses so as to appeal to the colonial nature of the martin. In the past, when finished lumber was much dearer than it is today, it was quite common to see a number of gourds hanging either from a pole with crossarms to which the gourds could be attached or perhaps hanging from a wheel mounted on a post (figures 1 and 2). These are seldom seen today although they still have a certain rustic appeal. Unfortunately, for most of us, natural gourds are not as common as they once were. However, it is possible to purchase plastic gourds and duplicate the older style.
