Beekeepers
Promote Honey
The Georgia Beekeepers Association promotes scientific and practical beekeeping and acts as the representative of the Georgia beekeepers in national beekeeping matters.
The Association, composed of approximately 200 Beekeepers a-
cross Georgia, also promotes the use and sale of nature's sweetest sweetner, HONEY.
Georgia has a population of several thousand colonies of honey-bee hives, operated by hob-
bist and professional Beekeepers. The honey and beeswax production amounts to several hundred thousands of dollars annually; but the honey bee is of much more value as the production partner of Georgia farmers.
Many crops in Georgia require insect pollination. Cucumbers, cantalopes, watermelons and squash

must be insect pollinated. It has been estimated that the honey bee pollinates more than one billion dollars worth of valuable agriculture crops in the United States annually.
Man's most useful insect, the honey bee, is also one of the most interesting to work with and observe. For instance, did you know that:
A strong hive of bees contains approximately 75,000 bees;
A honey bee makes 154 trips for one teaspoon of honey;
Bees consume seven pounds of honey to secrete one pound of beeswax;
Actual weighing has shown that it takes about 20,000 trips to bring in a pound of nectar from the flowers and blossoms;
To gather a pound of honey, a bee flies a distance equal to more than three times around the world. It takes 160,000 bee hours to produce a pound of ripened honey; ~ The Queen Bee lays approximately 1,500 to 1,800 eggs per day during the summer months. A queen Bee can lay her own weight in eggs in one day. Her average life span is 2-3 years while worker bees live only 5-8 weeks. Their wings wear out while gathering Honey. Sam O. Cribbof Waycross serves as president this year. Serving as vice president is J. W. Sheppard Jr., of Stone Mountain, and Doys Hand of Waycross is secretary-treasurer.

Straight Line Attracting Birds

For Your Pleasure Do you have a method of drying

We do not have a method of drying them but our home economist advises that they can be frozen. Cut them in slices or chunks and freeze one whole sliced or chunked pepper in a plastic bag. Pack four or five of these little bags in a freezer container and put in the freezer. They need not be thawed to be used, but can be parboiled for quicker cooking. Various birds have different feeding habits. Some prefer animal foods, such as beef suet. Others prefer grain, and still others prefer fruit. Supply all three types of food at the feeding station.

Black Walnut is one of the most valuable and highly-prized timber trees in our country. The wood has a rich, dark brown color and is very heavy, hard and strong with a very tight grain. It has been considered the ultimate in cabinet woods since colonial times but the wood is so valuable today that only veneers of black walnut are widely used in the furniture industry.
One of the most widely known uses of the wood is for gunstocks. During World War I the trees

became so scarce that surveys were made to locate individual trees.
The nuts of the black walnut are also widely used in cakes and candies and the hulls surrounding the nuts have been used as a dye to stain cloth.
Black walnut trees are found as far north as Minnesota and as far south as northern Florida. Although it withstands a variety of temperatures, the optimum average is 55 with a frost-free season of at least 170 days and 35 inches of rainfall per year. In Georgia this tree is generally found in the piedmont and mountain region though found sparingly along the coast.
Many people say that other trees and shrubs will not grow near a black walnut because it poisons the soil. Actually the soil is not poisoned but the roots of the tree emit a toxic substance which will kill the root systems of neighboring plants if they touch.
It takes about 150 years for the black walnut to mature but it will start producing nuts when it is about 30 years old. Many trees live over 250 years and grow to a height of over 100 feet and 100 inches wide.

is not readily available, use a peanut butter-grain mixture; it is relished by a number of birds.
Seed-eating birds will take a wide variety of food, such as millet, corn, sunflower seed, hemp, wheat, cracked peanuts and pecan meat. A good balanced mixture for graineating birds contains 30 percent sunflower seed, 30 percent hemp seed, 30 percent millet, and 10 percent buckwheat.
Whole corn and starch grain are taken by a large number of species, such as English sparrows, starlings, blue jays and pigeons. There are also many commercial bird feed mixtures available at garden supply, hardware and feed stores.
