Odd Gathering
Cares A bout Ga.
We may seem to be an odd gathering.
We are farmers, bankers, lawyers, merchants, retired civil servants, state representatives, contractors, teachers and salesmen. But all 217 men have two things in common. We
care about. Georgia's future and we are all Soil and Water Conservation District Supervisors.
Our job is helping landowners conserve, preserve and protect soil and water resources. We promote urban sediment control, sponsor youths in conservation workshops and provide educational materials for Georgia's schools. It may be that we do it because of a feel for the land and a hate for the waste of erosion. It may be because
(Our guest columnist this week is Frank O. Crawford, President, Georgia Association of Soil and Water Conservation Districts, Route 1, Morgan Valley Road, Rockmart

we recognize the serious threats to the beauty and productivity of Georgia lands. We aren't paid for it and don't want to be. We are neither heroes nor martyrs. We're just plain workers.
President Franklin D. Roosevelt was moved by the mid-thirties dust storms to institute a program controlling erosion across the nation. He recommended in 1935 a law establishing conservation districts to the governor of each state.
Every square foot of Georgia was included in one of 27 conservation districts 14 years after the first district was formed in 1937. Each of the districts has one to nine counties with one or two supervisors elected or appointed from each county.
President Roosevelt realized that for the effective application of the assistance he was offering to solve the landowners problems, this federal effort had to be coordinated by those closest to the problem. He provided for assistance through the Soil Conservation Service of the U.S. Department of Agriculture. The supervisor's duty was to determine priorities and direct the efforts of SCS where conservation practices were needed.
This alliance between the districts and SCS has resulted in conservation practices being applied to a total of nearly 22 million of Georgia's 37 million acres today. Woodland planting, contour farming, terracing, farm ponds, eroded area planting and irrigation systems are just part of the measures implemented on these lands.
Good conservation practices on every acre in Georgia is our goal.

grant from the USDA to study vaccines effective against Exotic Newcastle.
The work involves epidemiologists
Two Bartow, Ga. brothers have been fined $500 and placed on six months probation as a result of charges of diverting slaughter swine to farm premises which may have contributed to a hog cholera outbreak in Johnson County.
Commissioner of Agriculture Tommy Irvin said evidence secured by livestock inspectors of the Georgia Department of Agriculture indicates the brothers, Ernest C. and Woodrow W. Smith, doing business as Smith Brothers Livestock Auction of Bartow, were responsible for violating a state-wide quarantine designed to prevent hog cholera outbreaks in the state.
For turkey, the young may be labeled young turkey, fryer, roaster, young hen or young torn. The mature may be labeled mature turkey, yearling turkey or old turkey.
Tips for poultry:
Use fresh chilled poultry within one to two days.

Poultry should be thawed completely before cooking. (Allow more cooking time if not thawed). Thaw in the refrigerator whenever possible. Never thaw poultry at room temperature. It may be left in the package and immersed in cold water.

Three outbreaks in the state this year have caused Georgia to lose its hog cholera free status, reducing the federal share of indemnities from 90 to 75%.
Georgia can regain its "free' status in six months if there are no further outbreaks. Commissioner Irvin stressed the importance of all producers and sale barn operators

Chop the onions, and cut up the turkey liver. Soak bread crumbs in water and squeeze dry; season to taste with salt and pepper. Melt butter in a frying pan, and cook onions and liver until tender. Add the bread crumbs and seasonings. Let it all cook, constantly until almost dry. Then the stuffing is ready.
To stuff and truss the bird, begin by placing spoonfuls of stuffing in the neck end, using enough to fill the skin. Fold
the wings close to the body and hold them by inserting 2 skewers through the wing, body, and wing on the other side. Fasten the thighs in the same manner with one skewer. Draw the skin over the neck and fasten to back with skewer. Rub the outside of the bird with 1 1/2 tablespoons of salt, 5 tablespoons of fat, and 2 tablespoons of flour mixed together.
Lay the turkey, breast down, in an open roasting pan and place in a moderate (375-degree) over. When brown, turn the fowl on its back, basting every 15 to 20 minutes with 3/4 cup hot water and 1/2 cup melted butter. Cook for 20 to 25 minutes to the pound, depending on the age of the bird.

The purpose of insulation is to provide resistance to the~ flow of heat. It may be heat escaping in the winter or heat entering the house in the summer. If your home isn't insulated, this could be a worthy project during the inbetween fall season. Fuel savings of around one-third can be realized in a properly insulated home.

THE MARKET BULLETIN
Sweet GW,?
One of the most common trees found in Georgia and the south, the Sweet Gum will grow on almost any kind of soil. The tree is easily identified by its "star-shaped" leaves. The edges of the leaves are serrated, alternate, simple and at the end of long stems. They give off a light fragrance when crushed.
The tree itself is quite large, usually growing to a height of 80 to 120 feet and 3 to 4 feet in diameter. The tree has a natural pyramidal shape when allowed to grow unobstructed. The bark is furrowed into narrow and sometimes flaky ridges.
During wartime, the Sweet Gum provided the balsamic resin used in making perfume rather than the Oriental storax which was unobtainable.
The sweet Gum is also a natural birdfeeder. It has been reported that as many as 12 different species of birds, including the Bobwhite, feed on the seeds.
Redgum wood has become quite important in the production of veneered furniture. It can be stained in imitation of more expensive woods and frequently trees are found that produce a veneer pattern of exquisite detail.
In the northern states, the Sweet Gum is often planted as an ornamental not only for the bright scarlet leaves of fall but also for the valuable Sweet Gum balls used so extensively in decorating for the holidays.

What is the name of the enclosed bug? Where do they come from? I have been aggravated for months now with them. How can I control them?
Mrs. J. W., Ringgold
Well, it certainly would have been easier to help with your bugs if you had included your name and address. The bugs are ground beetles and they come in from outside. They are not harmful and can be controlled with Sevin or Diazinon outside.

I fertilized my fish pond and now the fish won't bite. Can the fertilizer keep them from seeing the bait?
H. D., Powder Springs
The Game and Fish people advise that normal fertilization of a fish pond does not under normal conditions stop fish from biting. Since the fertilization does create a plankton bloom that to some degree reduces visibility, it may be that for sight feeders such as bass this would interfere to a slight degree with their ability to see lures or other baits that are offered. However, they don't think* th* is* would apply to catfish.
Where can I get agricultural gypsum? A. B., Dublin
Agricultural gypsum is Calcium sulfate and should be available at most farm supply stores which handle fertilizers and lime. Gypsum is often sold under the name of landplaster.
RESPONSE
There is a simple reason for Mrs. L. B. of Martin's milk souring and
bubbling. It is the persimmons. They are getting ripe now and falling. I
have had this trouble before. All you do is cut down all persimmon trees
nearby or pick up all persimmons that fall on the ground and your
problem will be solved.

related to growth and efficiency. "For many years," said Dr.
Brown, "we judged cattle on the basis of looks but cattlemen learned the hard way that an attractive appearance is no guarantee for breeding success. Then we entered into the present period of breeding for size, with cattlemen matching
the biggest animals they can find in hopes of bigger and better offspring. Now we are beginning to think in terms of growth efficiency and productivity.
At Millarden, we will attempt to develop animals that efficiently convert food to quality red meat. We will also be working toward systems of production that improve the overall efficiency of the cattle industry. And the result will be animals that are PROFITABLE arat.t"her than just large or nice to look
Dr. Brown pointed out that the first step in the research program will be to stratify the Millarden herd and evaluate each individual animal, which now numbers 300 breeding females.
This is where the computer comes in. The computer is being used to speed up evaluation, improve accuracy and to perform all statistics analysis.
We will record as much information as possible about each bull and heifer: past productivity, body measurement, ancestory, size, and shape. Then we'll feed in specifics on productivity and growth as the program develops.
We will have to know more about our cattle than anyone else in the business, therefore the computer is a necessity for keeping individual records and instant data retrieval.
The information will be analyzed on computers at the University of Georgia. After we evaluate the present herd, we'll begin a program of selective breeding to emphasize specific traits for a variety of purposes."
All results of the Millarden applied research program will be published for sharing with the industry. In addition, limited number of proven cattle, having completed required phases of research, will be sold to breeders.
Bird Choice
(Continued from page 1) mercially stuffed frozen poultry should be cooked without thawing.
The internal temperature when done is 180 to 185 degrees F.
Poultry should be completely cooked and served immediately after its done.
Left-over cooked poultry, broth, stuffing and gravy should be separated, covered and refrigerated. Use within one to two days. For longer storage, poultry should be frozen.
When using left-over poultry and dressing, it should be thoroughly heated before serving.
Animal Science Head
Marshall E. McCullough, professor of animal science, University of Georgia College of Agriculture Experiment Stations, has been named head of the Department of Animal Science at the Georgia Experiment Station, Experiment by the University System Board of Regents.
As department head, McCullough will direct the research program in animal science of Georgia's oldest experiment station, one of three main stations in the College of Agriculture's state-wide system.
Mrs. Lillie Mullis, Winder, is shown in her front yard with her Big Boy tomato plant which has yielded tomatoes weighing two pounds and over. The tomato plant, planted in a basket of sawdust and shavings, has produced over two bushels of tomatoes and will probably continue to yield tomatoes until frost.

Dead Livestock
Must Be Buried
It is a state law in Georgia that all dead livestock be buried within 12 hours of death.
Livestock producers are warned to cover and disinfect areas where dead animals have been lying.
Rendering trucks should not enter animal yards and dead animals should not be dragged through areas used by other animals.
If a rendering truck is not available, animals should be buried where surface water will not be contaminated or where other animals will not uncover the body.
