Duroc Breeders
On The Move
Georgia Duroc enthusiasm, testing participation, barrow showings, and quality Durocs are the best they have been for years.
Out of the six breeds participating in the Georgia's Swine
Test Station summer of 72, thirty of the seventy - four qualifying for sale were Durocs; leaving only forty-four for the remaining five breeds. These boars must have reached two hundred pounds by one-hundred-fifty days of age, must make his gain on three pounds of feed or less, and have an average of not more than 1.20 inches backfat. The Georgia Duroc Breeders sponsored a booth at the 1972 Swine Expo in January at the Coastal
(Our guest columnist this week is Perry G. Cross, President, Georgia Duroc Breeders Association, Route 3, Colquitt 31737.)__________
Plains Experiment Station in Tifton. And, also helped maintain the Georgia Swine Growers booth where they grilled pork-burgers and miniature sausage to serve to the participants.
We are participating at all levels of showing throughout the United States from local shows on up to our National Duroc Congress held in Des Moines, Iowa this summer. At least six Georgia Duroc Breeders either attended or showed pigs at this show where five hundred were entered.
The last Southeastern National Duroc Congress was held in Goldsboro, North Carolina where a large number of Georgia Duroc Breeders participated.
At the banquet I gave an invitation for the Congress to come to Statesboro, Georgia, January 7, 8, 9, 1973. This is a big show and I ask for the interest and cooperation of every one interested in Durocs, especially the Georgia Duroc Breeders.
We have continually strived to improve the Duroc Breed in Georgia and I honestly believe that the Georgia Duroc Breeders have made more improvement in the quality of their Durocs than any other section of the Southeast. We have driven many miles promoting, showing and selling the Duroc image.
We now have fifty-eight active members in the Georgia Duroc Breeders Association. These men are very interested in promoting Durocs and are backing their President onehundred per cent.

Court Dismisses
Fire Ant Suit
A suit filed in Federal Court in Atlanta by three Harris County property owners in an effort to prevent aerial Fire Ant eradication treatment over their property was dismissed late Friday.
This was the third suit filed in Federal Court, one in Washington, D.C. and two in Atlanta, in which the court has refused to intercede in Georgia's Fire Ant eradication effort and the manner in which it is being conducted by state and federal officials.

Deadly Horse Disease

Diagnosed In Georgia

Equine Infectious Anemia is present in Georgia; it has oeen diagnosed in several herds of horses in the state. Horse owners should therefore make themselves aware of the symptoms and affects of this deadly disease.

Waterfowl Season
Announced In Ga.
Open seasons for hunting waterfowl in Georgia have been announced.
For hunting ducks the open season is December 2, 1972, through January 20, 1973.
There is no open season on canvasback and redhead ducks, brant and geese.
The open season for hunting coots is December 2, 1972, through January 20, 1973.
The open season for hunting mergansers is five daily and 10 in possession, of which not more than one daily and two in possession may be hooded mergansers.
All shooting hours are from 1/2 hour before sunrise to sunset daily.
For hunting waterfowl, all persons 16 years of age or older must have a migratory bird stamp as well as a valid state hunting license.

This disease is caused by a virus, which research workers have been unable to isolate until very recently and therefore have been hindered in efforts to develop a vaccine to prevent the disease. There is no vaccine available to prevent this disease, nor is there any treatment known for positively reacting animals.
The disease may exist in the acute form, which causes a rapid anemia and is fatal, or it may exist in the subacute or chronic form, in which the animal becomes emaciated and progressively weaker and fluid may accumulate in the lower parts of the body.
In the chronic form the animal may remain a carrier of the disease for the remainder of its life.
The disease is spread from infected horses to other horses by biting flies and ' mosquitoes. Ordinarily the disease spreads slowly, but if a carrier animal is introduced into a susceptible herd an outbreak may occur.
The disease is diagnosed by a test,
known as the Coggins test, run on the blood serum of an infected animal. Equine owners who desire to have their animals tested should contact their herd veterinarian and have him take blood samples from the horses and send them to the Animal

Ga. Apple Festival

Commissioner of Agriculture Tommy Irvin and Agricultural Commodity Commission for Cotton board member P. R. (Bobby) Smith like the feel of the material on this all new all cotton shirt. The fabric is the first locally
produced all-cotton material that needs little or no ironing. This new material will represent an expanding new market for cotton and a boon to Georgia cotton growers. In Georgia, farmers produced 380,000 bales of cotton last year (a $100 million crop) and are expected to produce 400,000 bales this year. The shirts writ sell for under $10 and be available for Christmas shopping.

The first annual Georgia Apple Festival will be held in Ellijay September 22 and 23.
The festival will honor Georgia's apple growers and their contributions to both the state and the national economy.
Among the many festivities will be the "Miss Georgia Apple Festival" beauty contest from which the winner will compete in national competition.
September 23 thru October 1 has been declared Georgia Apple Week.
Seed Case Ended
The Georgia Department of Agriculture Seed Inspection Division found and reported to federal authorities shipments of red fescue seed to Atlanta and Madison and a shipment of white clover seed to Cartersville to be in violation of the Federal Seed Act.
The case against the Farmers Marketing Service, Inc., of Albany, Oregon, was terminated by a judgement in the amount of $500. Included among the violations were false labeling as to the percentage of pure seed, other crop seeds, germination, date of test, and occurrence of noxious-weed seed.

We Get Letters

Dear Editor:
I read Mrs. Johnston's letter to the MARKET BULLETIN about attracting birds to her home and bird houses and feeders do a lot as do shrubs that bear berries or anything that is food. But I have found them equally attracted to water in a shallow pan, especially when the weather is dry, where they can drink and bathe. I use an old garbage can lid and a tray that has sides and find them ideal. Birds won't come to deep water. The reward is worth the trouble of carrying out a bucket of water when needed.

September Gardening
Bearded Iris Rhizomes may be planted now, or old clumps of bearded iris may be divided and replanted. Locate the bed in full sun if possible and in a well-drained area. Soil should be light in texture and well fortified with a balanced plant food.
Lift old clumps of iris with a spading fork and divide the clump into single, fresh terminal rhizomes. Discard the tough old growth in the center of each clump. Cut leaves back to at least half their length in a fan shape. Plant each section about a foot apart just beneath the soil surface. Point the growing end in the direction you wish the plant to spread. Water the bed well.
Camellias As flowerbuds continue to develop on camellias, be sure to give the plants ample water to prevent loss of these buds. For larger flowers, thin out the flowerbuds in each cluster, leaving only the largest on each shoot.
Chrysanthemums Continue to lightly feed your chrysanthemum plants each week until color shows in the flowers. Using 1 teaspoon of complete liquid fertilizer per gallon of water, give each plant 1 pint. If you are growing large standard mums, stake each plant to prevent wind damage. Also, continue to disbud your standards.
Compost Prepare a compost bed now to receive leaves that soon will be falling from deciduous trees. Locate the compost bed in an out-of-the-way area, yet convenient to gardening activities. Build a frame of wire, boards, or bricks to accommodate leaves and other vegetative material as it becomes available. By the addition of a small amount of fertilizer and an occasional watering, you can have excellent compost for use in the garden next spring.
Container Plants Container-grown plants that you intend to overwinter indoors need attention this month. Groom plants by cutting away overgrown, damaged, and dead foliage to encourage new growth and healthier, more attractive plants.
If plants have outgrown their containers, repot now to allow time for them to become re-established prior to bringing indoors. Include peat, compost, or a similar organic material in your potting soil to assure good drainage and to avoid compaction. Protect newly potted plants from direct sunlight and drying winds, and keep the soil moist but not wet.
Gourds Ornamental gourds should be harvested as soon as the vines dry up in late summer or fall. Cut a small piece of stem with each gourd so it can be hung up to dry slowly in a cool, airy spot. When thoroughly dry, preserve the gourds with a coating of shellac, lacquer, or paste wax.
Lawns Watch out this month for brown patch, a destructive fungus disease that makes its appearance during cool, humid weather.
If the problem appeared on your lawn last fall, make an application of PCNB (Terraclor) to the affected area to help prevent its appearance this year. If moisture is lacking in the soil, water the lawn thoroughly at least 24 hours before treating with the fungicide.
Roses Proper attention to roses can extend their blooming season well into fall.
Feed now and again in October for continued growth and flower production. Prune plants as necessary to reduce their size and to encourage new growth.

At one time the leading sweet potato producing state, Georgia is still a major producer of this nutritionally complete vegetable.
Indians were cultivating sweet potatoes on what is now Georgia soil when the first English settlers made their homes here. Ever since, sweet potatoes have played an important role in the history of Georgia as well as the South. It was the most important single food in sustaining the people of the South during the American Revolution, the Civil War and Reconstruction.
Sweet Potatoes have always been a major production item in Georgia, especially during the 100 year period between 1836 and 1936 when Georgia had over 150,000 acres in production.
Sweet Potatoes are members of the morning-glory family. They will not thrive in cool weather. There is no farming area that is too hot or moist for growing sweet potatoes. No other crop grown in the U. S. will withstand more heat and few require as much heat to grow as sweet potatoes.
Due to these tropical requirements, the sweet potato never became popular in Europe and was little known even in the warmer areas of the Mediterranean.
Sweet potatoes are among the most easily prepared of all vegetables. They lend themselves to most of the cooking methods used for potatoes. The consumption, however, of the sweet potato has been on a downward trend for the last 30 years. This has nothing to do with the merit of the food but rather with the competition from the enormous number of food products now offered to the public.

The saddleback caterpillar, also known as a "stinging" caterpillar, seems to be prevalent in Georgia. It does not sting but has spines which are connected to poison glands. These cause severe itching and burning pains when they come in contact with skin. It is brown with a green back and flanks on which is a conspicuous brown, oval, central area usually bordered with white. The brown spot has been likened to a saddle and the green area to a saddle blanket, hence the name. The saddleback caterpillar has many plant hosts and appears to show little preference. Your county agent can advise what insecticide will eliminate ihese creatures.

I would like to know when and if hornets ever leave their nest. I have found a very large nest that seems to be full of them at the edge of my back yard in a bush. I want to know if there is a way to destroy the hornets without hurting the nest as I would like to have it.
Mrs. C. M., College Park
Our Plant and Entomology Division has advised us that hornets leave their nest after the first cold freeze. May we suggest that you spray the nest at night for elimination of the hornets with hornet and wasp sprays, available at your local garden center or hardware store.

Can you identify two birds that come to my feeder every day? One is very small, dark gray on his head and face and light gray on his breast. The other looks like a sparrow in color and size except that he has lots of red on his head and neck. Both are beautiful.
Mrs. F. H., Covington

The bird people at the Game and Fish Commission told us that the

first bird appears to be a junco, and the second is probably one of the

small woodpeckers.

HELP!! We have skunks under our home. Sometimes the odor is so strong it wakes us up at night. Can you help us?
C. R., Valdosta

The Game and Fish Commission advises moth balls or moth crystals be placed under your home in the area that could be frequented by wild animals. After the animals are discouraged from using the house, we would suggest that all openings be closed. The best time to do this would be around 10 p.m. after the animals have left.

Horse Disease
(Continued From Page 1)
Disease laboratories at Tifton.
There is no cure for this disease and an infected animal that survives may remain a carrier for life.
If an animal is found to be infected with this disease the owner has three choice: he may put the animal to sleep; quarantine the animal on his premises and completely isolate from any other horses or house in totally insect free quarters. A system will be developed to permanently identify this animal as infected with Equine Infectious Anemia. Every effort should be made to eliminate flies and mosquitoes from this area.
To avoid introducing this disease into his herd, a herd owner should have all horses tested before adding them to his herd.
This disease does not affect any species of animal other than horses. Hopefully, we will be able to initiate a state-wide program for the control and eradication of Equine Infectious Anemia in the not too distant future.
Prices Raised
On Seedlings
Approximately 55,593,000 tree seedlings are available for order by Georgia landowners. This is a 16 percent increase over 1971. An additional 8,600,000 seedlings are being grown under contract for industries.
The price on all species of pine and lespedeza have been increased $1 per thousand. The species include improved loblolly, and slash pine, eastern white, longleaf, shortleaf, slash and Virginia pines.
The early submission of orders is encouraged as all orders received prior to the first of November will be filled depending on supply. If orders exceed supply, the trees will be prorated between orders. Orders received after the first of November will be filled on a first come, first serve basis.
Seedling application forms can be obtained from the Forestry Commission county rangers, county agents, soil conservation service technicians and agricultural conservation program _ officers. All orders must be submitted on a Forestry Commission application form.
