Peach Decline Being Studied

Decline or short life is a disease

complex that results in death of

peach trees, usually during the

spring. It has been especially

prevalent following winter fluc-

tuations of temperatures from very

mild to sub-freezing. Trees com-

monly die at ages of three to five

years and the disease clearly is more

prevalent on land where peaches

have been cultivated previously.

Peach tree short life has been a

recognized problem for many years

but until the latter 1960's it received

little concentrated research.

In 1965, pathological studies

were begun in Fort Valley and

research work

was expanded

in 1968 throu-

gh the estab-

lishment of a

team of state

scientists all

working at the

same location.

Research on the

__

problem was al-

so started at the Southeastern Fruit

and Tree Nut Research Station in

Byron.

Preliminary findings and recom-

mendations were made available to

peach growers by the extension service as soon as they were obtained from research. The year 1972 marks the fifth year of most experimental plots and coincides with a severe decline year.
A series of eight good
management practices are now available from the extension service. These practices, which incorporate and amplify research findings from 1967 to 1972, are all pointed toward maintaining vigorous tree growth as the primary basis for peach production. Tree longevity can be significantly increased through use of these recommendations.
Many of the recommended practices, which have been found to be beneficial by research in Georgia and have been substantiated by research in South and North Carolina, are at variance with commonly accepted grower practices. The eight practices listed below should be used together in management systems to obtain the maximum benefit: 1) subsoil deeply and thoroughly prepare land; 2) fumigate soil where nematodes are a problem; 3) lime soil to about pH 6.0 or above, down to a depth of 16 inches or more; 4) plant trees grown in fumigated nursery soil - don't import a disease or nematode problem; 5) Lovell rootstock is recommended because it is superior to many commonly-used rootstocks available

Statewide Embargo The Traditional Catfish Due To Hog Cholera Is Now Booming Business

Commissioner of Agriculture
Tommy Irvin has imposed a statewide embargo on the movement or sale of all swine from the states of North Carolina and South Carolina because of new hog cholera out-
breaks in the states. The embargo will continue in ef-
fect until further notice that both states have been declared cholera
free. Georgia has not had a hog cholera
outbreak since May.

Catfish farming has become a thriving business for some of Georgia farmers, You can tell farm reared channel catfish by: (1) looking at label, (2) the forked tail, and (3) the speckled abdomen.
It is important to recognize this species among the more than 1,200 different species of catfish found mostly in fresh water, because it is generally agreed that channel cat have the best flavor of any of its relatives.
Catfish are now hatched under controlled conditions. The fingerlings, three to five inches long,

Catfish are an American tradition. They have been known to grow as long as six feet and
weigh 150 pounds or more.

About four to six months later, they
are harvested by the use of large nets. By this time the fish weigh threefourths to one and one-fourth pounds.
The next step is the processing.

Take soil samples now on, all areas. Then as quickly as possible fertilize and apply the needed lime, based on test recommendations. It takes several months for lime to react with the soil.

oregano

1/4 tsp. pepper

ham

1 cup shredded mozzerella

3 slices mozzerella,

Combine beef with eggs, crumbs, parsley, oregano, salt, pep-

per and garlic. You may use a few drops of milk if mixture

seems dry, but mixture should not be sloppy. Pat out meat

mixture on waxed paper to a 10 x 12-inch rectangle. Arrange

ham slices on top of meat, leaving a margin around edge.

Sprinkle shredded cheese over ham. Starting from short end,

carefully roll up meat using waxed paper to lift. Seal edges to

form nice loaf. You might experiment with chipped, chopped

ham as a substitute for ham slices. Bake at 350 degrees for 1

hour. Remove loaf from oven to top with cheese wedges;

then continue baking only until cheese melts.

THE THIN LOOK
The thin look is in! But the natonal preoccupation with slimness, surprising as it may seem, creates a problem, says Miss Martha Johnson, Extension home economist - nutrition. She explains: "Too many people turn to bad diets, pills and gadgets which result in poor food habits, wasted money and sometimes serious effects on health. This is not the way to lose weight. It takes a steady balanced diet to take weight off and keep it off."
BLACKSPOT Blackspot, a troublesome rose disease, is caused by a fungus that lives from year to year in dead, fallen leaves and stems. Control measures for this disease should include a good program of sanitation, including disposal by burning of fallen leaves and proper pruning of stems. Efficient control of blackspot requires repeated applications of an effective fungicide every seven days thoughout the growing season.

A protector against life's misfor tunes and a guide to heaven in death in the Hindu religion, basil ranks high throughout the world as not only a sacred herb but also as a delicious culinary seasoning.
Basil comes from the Greek word meaning "royal" or "king" thought to come from its purple color used in classical times by royalty. Basil is a native to the Middle East and the Mediterranean.
Many legends surround the use of this herb including good fortune for those who build their houses where basil grows well but only evil to those who inadvertently uproot the herb. The Italians consider a sprig of basil tucked behind the ear of a peasant girl a warning that she's out to win her sweetheart and in Africa a scorpion bite will be painless if one eats basil soon after the attack.
There are five or six varieties of basil all differing in height, color and taste. Each variety of the an nual is very hardy and will grow in most climates. Basil seed ger minate readily and the plants do well in well-drained sunny soil that is not too rich.
The two tall varieties of sweet basi.l most familiar in this country reach a height of one to two feet. The dwarf variety forms small bushes and often is used in garden borders.

For Your Protection
For your protection, did you know that ...
Being informed is your best protection against consumer fraud.
Pigs aren't as fat as pigs use to be! Controlled feeding brings them to market with much better figures and only about half the fat and twothirds the calories of the pig from a dozen years ago.
The placement of meat or poultry term in the product name determines the amount of meat or poultry. Products called beef and gravy contain more meat than those called gravy and beef. There is more poultry in turkey with noodles than in noodles with turkey.
The octane rating of gasoline is a simple means of determining how well a gasoline will resist knocking in the engine, "Knocking" can cause damage to automobile engines; use of the proper octane-rated gasoline can control knocking and can save the consumer money if he has been paying for high octane gasoline that he does not need. Check your car operation manuals.

g What average yield can the home gardener expect from the following: each Kentucky Wonder bean vine; a dwarf apple tree; a Big Boy type tomato plant; a mammoth okra plant; a dwarf peach tree? E. B., Macon

The age of the apple and peach trees and the size of the tree would determine the yield that you could expect. There is no way for anyone to estimate that yield without having this information. The words "mam moth okra plant" give no indication as to what variety this might be and there, again, it would be impossible to estimate the yield. The Kentucky Wonder bean plant might produce up to one peck of beans if the plants were spaced out and kept fertilized, sprayed and watered during the en tire growing season; however, an average vine would not produce this many beans under normal conditions.

We have a chihuahua and lately he stands on the porch and howls like a wolf. What is this a sign of?
C. W., Barnesville

Since all dogs are descendants of wild animals, this is not an abnormal

occurrence in these dogs. We would suggest that you take the dog to a

veterinarian for a complete check-up, and if he finds nothing wrong

physically with the animal we would not worry further about the

problem.

My mimosa tree leaves just started dying, instead of open falling as in the fall of the year. What causes it?
Mrs. G. M., Albany

Your description indicates your mimosa trees are infected with one of

several conditions. The most common disease is one called mimosa wilt.

This disease has killed thousands of mimosas in Georgia during recent

years. There is no known effective treatment. The only way to maintain

healthy mimosas is to purchase varieties that are wilt resistant. If you

desire these, make certain that they have been propagated from the

disease resistant types.

We have a pot plant called dwarf palm. Can you tell us how to propagate it?
B. D., Lenox

Palms are propagated by seed or by separation of offshoots from the main trunk. Sometimes such as those that clump are propagated by dividing or division. Generally most all palms are propagated from seed because of the ease and the number of seed produced on a plant greatly outnumbers the offshoots or division. Since palms are monocots, they cannot be propagated by cuttings. Offshoots or division must have some roots if they are to be successful.
**#* I have quite a few bee hives and about one or two out of all my hives get wax worms. Please let me know of any prevention for these worms.
M. J., Thomaston

By the advice of our Plant and Entomology Division, the best control

for the wax worms are the bees themselves. A strong colony of bees will

get rid of the moths.

Please advise how I can get bermuda grass from around my daylilies. Is it true that geese will kill this grass?
Mrs. M. B., Macon

It is true that geese will keep down the grass, .but may not kill it. May we suggest that you use dalapon on the bermuda grass, being cautious not to put it too near your daylilies.

Transplant Strawberries
Strawberry plants set out between September and October will produce more berries than if set out later. They will have plenty of time to become established and to develop ^ good root system before cole weather occurs. Plants set out in early fall may be allowed to fruit the first year.
Peach Decline

now; 6) do not harrow orchards because this practice destroys roots control weeds with herbicides; 7) apply extra nitrogen during August; and 8) prune trees moderately during February, March or April.
Research in Georgia has been of great benefit to our peach industry and work is continuing in Georgia and other states to determine the causes of short life. It is very likely that no simple remedy to the problem will be available even when the principle causes of this complex disorder are clearly demonstrated.
Recently, a Peach Tree Short Life Work Group was formed by scientists from Georgia, South Carolina and North Carolina. This group will plan and conduct research cooperatively to focus their state and federal research resources on this important problem.

seeding. However, don't plow steep
slopes. Disk them after applying lime, fertilizer, then seed.
The late summer fallow on fields where erosion can be controlled helps reduce weed competition later, and improves soil moisture and nutrient supply. It often makes the; difference between a productive long-time perennial pasture and a poor pasture needing renovation every few years.
