Working Together Benefits States
Since becoming Commissioner of Agriculture, I have been keenly aware of the necessity and of the benefits of working together with other State Departments of Agriculture, especially those southern states that are our close neighbors.
There are many problems such as those involving quarantines, disease eradication, imports and exports that are dependent on our neighboring states for their success.
Other programs such as marketing, environmental control, federal cooperatives, pricing, inspection and uniform labeling can be expedited and strengthened when a cooperative effort is put forth.
It is for these reasons that I have taken an active part in the national and more specifically the Southern Association of State Departments of Agriculture.
I recently attended the conference of the 16 southern state departments and was gratified by the accomplishments and informative discussions of the three day meeting.
Resolutions of particular interest to Georgia which I helped sponsor as a member of the resolutions committee included:
a Food Price Resolution criticizing President Nixon for his recent action listing meat import restrictions and a resolution specifically condemning the action of lifting beef import quotas;
a resolution endorsing the federal proposal to provide for inspection, treatment and certification of livestock prior to Interstate movement from screw worm infested areas and further requesting the USDA to implement any funds available to prevent the spread of screw worm;
a resolution recommending that the 80/20 funding of the wholesale meat act be favorably acted on by the House Agriculture Committee so that states will be able to continue this program;
and resolutions concerning hog cholera, egg pricing, dairying and Newcastle.
I look forward to serving as the president of this organization during the next year and working toward the enactment of these resolutions.
Beware Of Bulge
Have you ever picked up a can of vegetables and noticed that it was bulging? If so, don't buy or use it. Bulged or swelled cans indicate spoilage. Small dents in cans do not harm the contents, but badly dented cans should be avoided.
Frozen vegetable packages should be firm. Vegetables that have been defrosted should be used immediately to avoid loss of quality. If the package is limp, wet, or sweating (signs of defrosting), don't buy it.
Also watch for packages stained by the contents. This may mean that the contents have been defrosted

Pinkeye Harmful
To Ga. Cattle
Farmers and cattlemen should be especially watchful of their cattle at this time of year for pinkeye. Late spring and early summer are the time of year when the greatest number of cases of pinkeye are seen, as increased glare from sunlight seem to set off outbreaks of the disease.
Pinkeye can set back growing calves, and sometimes one case in some calves will lead to a wholesale outbreak.
Fly control will go about as far as anything to hold down cases of pinkeye. Many persons feel the fly is the agent by which the disease is transferred from one animal to another.
If you suspect pinkeye in your herd, contact your local veterinarian immediatley._______________

How do I prepare new potatoes for freezing after they have been sliced for french fries?
M. H., Stapleton Your potatoes should be cut lengthwise, then crosswise into 3/8 inch strips. Rinse in cold water; dry thoroughly between towels. Fry small amounts in deep, hot fat (360 F.) about five minutes until tender but not brown. Drain on paper towel, repeating with remaining batches. Cool to room temperature, package, seal, label, date and freeze. Recommended storage time, one month. To serve, arrange potatoes on baking sheet; put in hot oven (425 F.) for ten minutes or until brown, turning once. At once, season with salt and pepper and serve.

What will keep ants off my strawberry vines?
Mrs. M. P., Monticello Our Entomology people advise using Chlordane. Make a band around the bed avoiding any contact with the plants themselves.
***
How do I best start live oak trees in my yard?
D. M., Whigham Our Plant division advises the best method of starting live oaks is to plant them from seed. This is the way nurseries grow them.

Georgians Plan Foreign Ag Tour
A group of Georgia farmers, agricultural leaders and agribusiness men and women are planning a farm study tour to include four continents during the latter part of September.
In addition to studying farm practices, the group will endeavor to promote Georgia agricultural products and trade relations in several European countries, South America and Africa.
There are a few openings left on the tour and anyone desiring additional information or who would be interested in accompanying the group should contact the Georgia Department of Agriculture, Room 218, 19 Hunter Street, Atlanta, Ga.
Georgia Lifts Cholera Embargo
Effective June 22, Commissioner of Agriculture Tommy Irvin released the embargo placed on the state of South Carolina on April 17, when hog cholera was confirmed in this state.
Since the federal quarantine has been released on all areas of South Carolina, the restriction of moving South Carolina hogs is no longer necessary.
South Carolina swine may now enter Georgia provided they have been permitted through the state veterinarian's office.
A weight watcher's delight containing 96 percent water, the cucumber has been enjoyed by civilizations around the world. Indians, Hebrews, Greeks and Romans included the fruit in their diet as long as 4,000 years ago and cucumbers were cultivated in colonial America as early as 1609.
A. member of the gourd family, cucumbers have always been a staple vegetable, both fresh and pickled. They come in a number of varieties from the short and thick brown skinned cucumber popular in Russia to the large white species grown in France primarily for cosmetic purposes to whiten and soften the skin.
Cultivation of cucumbers is relatively simple as long as they have plenty of heat, moisture and a rich soil.
