Poultry Labs Serve Georgians
The poultry industry in Georgia is
more fortunate than most states in
that they have six poultry disease
laboratories which are located in the
major poultry producing areas of the
state. These laboratories are
operated by the Georgia Poultry Im-
provement Association on a con-
tractural agreement with the Georgia
Department of Agriculture.
These laboratories are lo-
cated at Oakwood, which is just

vice. The administration of the National Poultry Improvement Plan and pullorum-typhoid disease control are carried out at the Oakwood laboratory. All six laboratories offer poultry disease diagnostic service.
The National Poultry Im-
provement Plan work has to do with the enforcement of State and Federal Poultry Regulations that are under the jurisdiction of the Official State Agency, pullorum-typhoid testing, hatchery and flock inspections, training pullorum-typhoid testing agents and supervising and check testing the work of these agents.
Any poultry producer in the state may submit birds to any of the six Georgia Poultry Laboratories. He may do this when he suspects that he has a disease problem, when he wants a "routine" check on his birds, or when he wants to find out how effective some of his previous vaccinations may have been.
Usually the producer carries
about six typically affected birds to the laboratory. When he gets there he is asked to give all the information that he can concerning the appearance of the sick flock, age, number of birds in flock, how long they have been sick, medication, vaccinations they have been given, daily mortality, per cent of flock affected, or any other information that might be helpful in making a diagnosis.
A veterinarian then performs an autopsy on some, or all the birds submitted. He may decide to. hold some of the birds for observation for a few days. The flock history and autopsy findings will guide the veterinarian in selecting further tests that need to be run. It may be necessary to run bacteriological cultures for

All animals leaving the screwworm infested area are inspected to determine if there are any open wounds and if any of the wounds are infested. Animals having open wounds are not allowed to move out of the screwworm infested area.

Frying Problems Made Easy
Although many doctors have told us to cut down on fried foods it is very difficult to do so. Fried foods just taste good usually. Sometimes fried foods can be a real problem. The manufacturer of one of the leading brands of polyun-
saturated solid vegetable shortening gives some tips on trouble-shooting your own problems with frying.
WHEN PAN FRYING
When This Happens:
It May Be Caused By This:
Try This To Correct It:
Food sticks to pan
Spattering Food tastes greasy
Fat smokes Fat bubbles over

BOOST CREDIT
Do you want a good credit rating? University Extension home economist Nancy Chandler says the best way to build an iron-clad credit rating is to buy an article on credit and pay it back on time. In doing so, you open the door to larger credit purchases, credit cards and loans.
CANDLE FRAGRANCE
Save odds and ends of old candles. University Extension home economists advise that these tallow remains make perfect room fresheners. Melt them down over low heat and add spices or a few whole cloves. Then pour the liquid tallow into molds with wicks. You'll have attractive products ideal for air freshening in bathrooms, basements and other places.
LETHAL TRACTORS
Each year, hundreds die in farm tractor mishaps. Thousands are injured. The 4H tractor project stresses how safe operation of farm equipment will keep not only machinery, but arms, legs, fingers and hands in good working order. For information on this or any of 4H's 102 learn-by-doing projects, contact the county agent or home economist located in your county Extension office.
FLOUR FOR BREAD
If you're making bread, don't use cake flour it's not suitable, according to the U. S. Department of Agriculture. Stick to allpurpose flour because it has sufficient protein to form an elastic framework and is strong enough for breadmaking.
PRESERVE GARLIC
To keep fresh garlic longer, University Extension home economists recommend peeling each garlic clove. Then seal the cloves in a bottle of olive oil. Store in the refrigerator. The garlic will keep for months and the oil can be used for salad dressing.
OVERWEIGHT?
One of the greatest problems in preventive medicine today, according to Miss Martha Johnson, Extension home economist nutrition, is obesity. She points out that overweight is closely related to heart disease, kidney diseases, degenerative arthritis, gout and gallbladder disease. She adds that it's also a risk for persons who need surgery.

THE MARKET BULLETIN
Onions are members of the lily
family which includes such flowers
as the tulip, hyacinth, and lily-of-the
valley. The onion is the un
derground bulb of the plant Allium
cepa. There are many kinds of
onions with different-colored skins
and they vary in size from the very
small bulblets of the spring or
green onions to the huge round red
Italian onions. The warmer the
climate in which onions are grown,
the milder and sweeter they tend to
be.
Onions were considered a symbol
of the universe because of their
spherical shape, thus the name
"onion" from the Latin word unus,
meaning one.
The onion has been cultivated as
far back as we have written history.
In the 4th millenium B.C., Egyptian
slaves working to build the gigantic
Great Pyramid at Gizeh are said to
have subsisted largely on onions,
radishes, and garlic. The children
of Israel had enjoyed onions in
Egypt and cried out bitterly when
they were deprived of this delicacy.
Onions have also been used for
medicinal purposes through the
ages. A 14th century document
reads, "It is good for them that have
cold and wet natures, and it does
good in the stomach and gives
good complexion." Through the
centuries onions and onion juice
were recommended to cure
earache, colds, fever, laryngitis,
and warts: an onion, cut into halves,
rubbed on a wart, tied together
again and buried, was supposed to
make a wart disappear while the
onion decayed in the ground.

Screwworms Threat
(Continued From Page 1)
animals closely and all wounds should be inspected to determine if any worm larvae are present. If a cattleman should find an open wound on any of his livestock which contains any type of worm larva, these larvae should be collected and submitted to the Georgia Department of Agriculture laboratory for identification. Open wounds should be treated as soon as possible.
Screwworm collection kits are available through veterinarians, livestock inspectors and county agents. Anyone finding a worm larva in an open wound on livestock should contact one of these people to get the larva submitted for identification.
Any larvae that are collected should be sent to the Georgia Department of Agriculture, 19 Hunter Street, N.W., Atlanta 30334. They will then be sent to Beltsville, Maryland, for identification. Screwworm collection kits may be obtained from the above address.
Screwworm was eradicated in Georgia in 1959. Prior to 1959, screwworms cost the southeastern states approximately $20 million per year.
Commissioner of Agriculture Tommy Irvin welcomes country singer Chet Atkins to the first Atlanta Symphony Pop Concert held June 18. The con cert, held at Stone Mountain Park in the new covered arena, is the first in a series to be held. The next concert, July 2, will feature the Atlanta Sym phony and the International Champion Barbershop Quartet, "The Gen tlemen's Agreement", and will celebrate an old-fashioned fourth of July. The Concert will begin at 2:30 p.m.

My horse has developed rough patches under the skin causing the hair to fall out and it is spreading. Could you give us a cure?
C. N., Ball Ground
We could have helped you much sooner if you had included your name and address. This condition could possibly be caused by lice or some other type of external parasite. We advise that you con tact your local vet as soon as possible and have the horse thoroughly examined so he can recommend treatment.

The bug you mailed us is a clothes moth, and is harmful to carpets and woolens. We could have mailed you a pamphlet on control if you had included your name and address.
Enclosed is a sample of one of my azaleas purchased from a nursery. It just won't bloom. I have tried everything.
Mrs. B. R., Ellijay The sample you enclosed is not an azalea but one of the dwarf hollies. May we suggest that you return this plant to the nursery where you purchased it, and ex plain the situation to them. We feel sure a satisfactory trade can be made.
How can I get rid of pigeons? They roost on my house and are a real nuisance.
Mrs. C. P., Savannah
A solution of full-strength amonia and either diesel fuel or kerosene, at the rate of one pint diesel fuel or kerosene to each gallon of amonia, has proven to be very effective. Apply this solution on the perches and other areas where you often see the pigeons. Be sure to use caution when using the solution on painted surfaces because it can remove the paint or cause discoloration.
Poultry Labs
(Continued From Page 1)
Salmonella, fowl cholera, or other organisms.
Sometimes tests are run for the presence of certain virus such as Newcastle virus, infectious bronchitis virus or laryngotracheitis virus. In some cases blood tests are run to check for the presence of antibodies to avian encephalomyelitis, Mycoplasma gallisepticum, Mycoplasma synoviae, Newcastle disease and infectious bronchitis. Tissue from certain areas may be taken and cut into very thin pieces and viewed with a microscope to see if certain characteristic lesions are present.
When all these tests are completed, the veterinarian takes these results, in addition to the flock history and autopsy findings, and makes a diagnosis. Along with the diagnosis, he also gives the poultry producer his. recommendations for prevention and/or treatment.
Sometimes poultry problems arise that can't be diagnosed in the laboratory. In this situation, one of the veterinarians will make a trip to the farm to look at the problem first hand.
The veterinarians in these laboratories are also available for consultation on setting up new programs and adjusting vaccination schedules.
The sole purpose of these laboratories is to provide service for the poultry industry, so do not be hesitant about calling on them when they can be of service to you.
