Vet Schools Set Higher Standards
The earliest record of veterinary services in America refers to a "Cow Doctor", in Virginia in 1625.
Veterinary Education was available only through private schools. Most of these school were
not satisfactory, their ultimate goal was profit, not education. They adm itted i 11 prepared students, shortened curriculums and graduated large numbers regardless of their capabilities. Therefore about 62% of these schools had to close their doors at the turn of the century.
(Our guest columnist this week is A. B. Kamine, D.V.M., President, Georgia Veterinary Medicine Association, 5400 Waters Avenue, Savannah 31401.)____________
In 1888 the livestock in this country was valued at $2,236,000,000. The health of this valuable national resource was unsafe under the uneducated psuedo-practitioners. Agricultural leaders became critical of the situation and realized the need for a more knowledgeable individual to entrust the health of the livestock. Better methods of teaching and adequate facilities was a necessity.
From that time to the present, the colleges of veterinary medicine advanced to a respectable standard. Well qualified candidates are accepted and competent students are graduated.
Most schools became either completely public or semi-public in the early 1900s. Following the depression of the '30's more applicants than room for students were received. However, after the end of World War II nine more colleges were created by state sponsored universities with the help of federal funds.
With the disappearance of the horse as the dominant animal, reevaluation of the role of the veterinarian was needed. The livestock industry changed needing veterinary consultants and the public health requirements of the nation increased. Thus higher standards were indicative to attract a more capable student.
The number of qualified prepared candidates for entrance into the colleges of veterinary medicine in 1970 was approximately one out of every five candidates. In that year there were 26,000 veterinarians in our country but the services of 42,000 will be needed by 1980.
What does this mean? The facilities in our schools will have to be expanded; student bodies increased without jeopardizing the educational qualities to satisfy the needs of the next decade.

Ga. Seed Cases
Three violations of the Georgia Seed Act were discovered by the Seed Division of the Georgia Department of Agriculture recently and cases brought against all three.
The first case was against Northrup, King, and Company, Minneapolis, Minnesota, involving a shipment of lima bean seed into Georgia that was mislabeled as to percentage of germination and date of test.
The second case was entered against Ring Around Products, Inc., Montgomery, Alabama, involving the false labeling of a shipment of hairy vetch seed into Georgia. The seed was represented to contain no noxious-weed seeds when in fact it did.
The third case involved annual ryegrass seed shipped into Georgia that was falsely and incompletely labeled from George W. Smith, Halsey, Oregon.
Georgia farmers and consumers are protected by a truth-in-labeling law that requires agricultural seed be truthfully and completely labeled.

New Group Benefits
From Soil Testing
A new group of growers is now benefiting from the University of Georgia Cooperative Extension Service soil testing program.
Producers of fruit, vegetable, field and forage crops have long used soil testing to solve fertility problems and increase yields.
Thanks to a new procedure initiated at the Soil Testing and Plant Analysis Laboratory here, greenhouse operators and nurserymen can also get answers to their fertility questions.
Soil bags, sampling instructions and other information are available at county agents' offices.

In June We Salute
The Dairy Industry
This year marks the 35th year the dairy industry of Georgia and the nation have joined hands in celebrating June Dairy Month. The Department of Agriculture cooperates in this observance and salutes the dairy producer and distributor for providing Georgia consumers with the finest milk that can be purchased in the United States.
There are approximately 1200 Grade A milk producers in Georgia producing over two million pounds of milk each year. These dairymen have about $450 million dollars invested in their farm operations. They contribute more than $70 million annually to Georgia's economy.
There are 35 dairy plants in the state that distributes 139,534,883 gallons of milk to Georgians each year.
These processors and distributors have $175,000,000 investment in their operations and employ over
6,000 people. In 1971, milk and ice cream sales
amounted to $150,000,000.
Milk, nature's most nearly per-
fect food, provides some of all the daily vitamin and mineral requirements of man. Milk is enjoyed by young and old alike. Georgia's booming dairy industry
supplies some 140,000,000 gallons each year to Georgians.
Georgians drink more than three million pounds of grade A fluid milk each day. This is about 382,287 gallons daily or 140,000,000 gallons annually.
All milk produced and sold in Georgia is checked regularly by the Georgia Department of Agriculture for sanitation, purity, and quality. Georgia consumers are provided the best tasting, highest quality milk that can be bought.
We salute the dairy industry of Georgia and urge all consumers to celebrate June Dairy Month with a large glass of cold milk.
Farm Management
Estate Planning
The practice of giving property and cash to individuals', both related and unrelated is commonplace. The objectives of the donor vary widely but a
primary objective is frequently that of reducing the taxable estate and in turn the estate tax liability.
Director Appointed
Dr. Stanley H. Kleven of the University of Georgia's College of Veterinary Medicine has been appointed as Director of the Poultry Disease Research Center (PDRC)
Prior to his appointment, Dr. Kleven served as an assistant professor of avian medicine and medical microbiology of PDRC.
He succeeds Dr. David P. Anderson who recently assuyed the position of Associate Dean for Graduate Affairs and Research at the College.
He is currently engaged in research projects on Marek's disease vaccination, the role of Mycoplasma synoviae in avian respiratory disease, and the development of serologic testing procedures for avian mycoplasmosis.
Without getting into the complex legal technicalities associated with gifts, let me suggest a few basic considerations.
Each individual has a lifetime exemption of $30,000 and an annual exclusion of $3,000 per gift against the federal gift tax. A man and wife
(Editor's Note: This is one in a series on money matters that affect Georgia consumers and farmers. This' service was provided as many people have the misconception that only the very wealthy need estate planning services. Property values, inflationary trends, and tax structures make much of this information valuable to even the smallest land holder._____________________
making joint gifts can double these two figures. For example, if you and your wife have never made in-
dividual gifts valued in excess of $6,000 you could give away cash or property valued at $60,000 without owing any gift tax.

We Get Letters
Dear Editor:
I would like detailed instructions on making small amounts of butter using a blender.
Mrs. William B. Eidson 3015 Mabry Road, N.E. Atlanta, Georgia 30319 Dear Editor:
I wanted to share my fertilizer formula with the other
readers of the BULLETIN.
1 Tablespoon household 1 Tablespoon salt peter
ammonia (a neutralizer) (Potassium nitrate)
1 teaspoon epsom salts 1 teaspoon baking powder
(Magnesium sulphate)
(Phosphorus)
1 gallon water
Note: Use Tablespoons and teaspoons as directed, and be sure to use BAKING POWDER, not baking soda. Use sparingly on small seedlings. On large or established plants, use one cupful as needed, but don't use too long or too often on tomatoes as it will cause them to go to top at expense of fruit. Use for house or outside plants.
Mrs. F. K. Hicks 3153 S. Jackson Blvd. Uniontown, Ohio 44685
(Editor's note: We have tested this fertilizer formula in our lab and have come up with an 8-5-16 with 2% magnesium mixture. While this fertilizer will not do damage to your plants, the ideal formula is a 5-10-10 mixture.)

Where can I get the castor bean that gets rid of moles? G. W. M., Americus
From your feed and seed store or the MARKET
BULLETIN.
****
I have started collecting old bottles and need a safe way to clean them. Can you suggest one?
C. C, Cornelia
We called the bottle experts and were advised to try a
mixture of ammonia and water, let solution stand in
bottle for approximately 24 hours, then use soap and
water. Some bottles will never come completely clean
due to age and the fact the residue has been in the bottle
so long.
****
I had a large oak tree cut down and can't get rid of the stump. Any suggestions?
S. M., Austin
Yes, Please, Please include your name and address so we can answer your request personally. This saves time for all of us and especially for you as we get hundreds of letters each week. Animate crystals will destroy your stump. These crystals are available at your feed and seed store or garden center.
****
Could squirrels cause an oak tree to die? Mrs. C. R., Athens
Yes m'am, May we suggest that you use traps to help thin out the squirrel population. Then you can take the animals to another area and let them go. We have tried to contact you but you failed to give us your full address.
****
I have property in both North Carolina and Georgia. Will one will suffice or do I need two?
Mrs. G. S., Marietta
May we please suggest that you contact a lawyer before attempting to draw up a will of this complexity? One will should suffice but must meet the requirements of both states, according to our legal advisor.

THE MARKET BULLETIN
Cicuta douglasii, named for
David Douglas, is a violently
poisonous plant. A piece of the un-
derground tuber the size of a
walnut is sufficient to kill a full-
grown cow. Many humans are
poisoned by this plant as well. It is
a member of the Parsley family
which contains some of the most
edible as well as some of the most
deadly poisonous plants.
History suggests that the close
relative of this plant, the Poison-
hemlock, was the source of the
poison Socrates was forced to drink
because he dared to speak his
beliefs.
How can you identify this poten-
tial danger? First, it is a stout herb
growing from 2 to 7 feet tall with
compound small white flowers
arising from the same point. The
leaf venation is trie surest iden-
tifying characteristic. Veins ter-
minate at notches rather than at
tips of teeth on leaf margins. All
leaves are saw-toothed.
This plant grows from thickened
tubers. If base of the stem just
above the root is cut lengthwise,
you will be able to see many tran-
sverse chambers divided' by pithy
walls. This is unique to this par-
ticular member of the Parsley
family.

Poultry Processors
Get Cleaner Birds
Poultry processors will be able to use less water yet get cleaner birds via a newly developed bird washer.
Most commercial washers currently used are not designed for maximum effectiveness. Poultry is conveyed through a tunnel lined on both sides with spray nozzles. The birds are deluged with water but, because of the random spray pattern used, a tremendous amount of water is required to get them washed clean.
ARS engineers Ken Whitehead and Rex E. Childs devised a poultry washer that uses a carefully designed spray pattern in which each nozzle directs a flat, jet spray at a specific area on each carcass.
Preliminary tests run at the Richard B. Russell Agricultural Research Center, Athens, Ga., and at a commercial plant, showed that the birds not only appeared cleaner after passing through the washer, but the volume of water used is reduced from a range of 50 to 100 gallons per minute in a commercial washer to 25 to 30 gallons per minute in the experimental unit.
Now the engineers are working with ARS microbiologist James Thomson to confirm preliminary tests which showed a reduction in the microbial population on washed carcasses.
Governor Jimmy Carter, Honorary Chairman of June Dairy Month in
Georgia, and Commissioner of Agriculture Tommy Irvin kick off the an nual June Dairy Month observance in Georgia. Georgia's dairy industry contributes to the economy approximately $162 million in retail sales and has over half billion dollars invested in land, livestock, equipment, dairy plants, milk trucks, etc.

In addition you could give up to
$6,000 to any number of individuals and still not owe gift taxes. In succeeding years any excess value over the $6,000 gift to each individual would be taxable. The graduated gift tax rate starts at 2.25% for the first $5,000 and increases to 57.75% at the 10 million dollar level.
It should be understood that gifts to individuals do not qualify for income tax deductions. The donor is liable for the income tax on the gift. The donee does not pay income tax on a gift.
If property or cash is given and
then the donor dies within three
years of the date of the gift, it becomes necessary to prove to the Internal Revenue Service that the
gift was not made in anticipation of death. If such proof can't be furnished, the value of the gift will be included in the estate and be subject to estate taxes.
Fair market value is used to determine the value of gifts and to compute gift taxes due, if any. The cost basis of the gift goes with the gift though. For instance, a couple gives their son a 300 acre parcel of land they acquired 30 years ago for $50 per acre.
The land has appreciated to a fair market value of $350 per acre. The $50 per acre cost basis goes with the gift. If the son sold the land for $350, a $300 per acre gain would be realized. Income tax would be paid on $ 150 per acre if the sale qualified for capital gain.
In computing the gift taxes let's assume no taxable gifts had been made previously and that this is a joint gift.
300 acres x $350-
v
Less joint lifetime exemption-
Si 05,000 60,000
Less $6,000 joint annual exclusion-
$45,000 6,000
(residual subject to gift taxes) $39,000
Gift taxes from table: $2,250 on $30,000 plus 13.5% on $9,000, $2,250 + $1,215 ,* $3,465 federal gift taxes due. In summary, consider gifts as a potential facet of your estate plan but seek legal assistance to help align this alternative with others to accomplish your final objectives in estate planning.
Can most all full grown-up dogs spot or sense, or smell any kind of snake (especially poisonous ones).
J. P., Stone Mountain
Snakes do emit a scent, as do all reptiles, which dogs are able to pick up from protein particles on the ground where reptiles have been. They can smell the scent and warn their master of possible danger by barking. Most all dogs are wary of snakes and will not go too close to them; although they will circle around and bark, which should serve as a warning.

Mrs. W. B., Brinson

Are wild cherry leaves poisonous to cattle? I cut some trees in my pasture and someone told me the leaves are poisonous.
W. G., Rock Springs
Remove trees and leaves from your pasture. The wild cherry tree is poisonous to cattle. The leaves are the poisonous part and the young green leaves as well as wilted leaves are the most poison ous.
