Egg Industry
Looks To Future
It is a pleasure for me to be associated wjth one of Georgia's greatest industries. The commercial egg industry has faced two of its most trying years but the experts say there is hope for a brighter day ahead.
We, at the Georgia Egg Commission, are working to insure a
brighter future for the industry through promotion, research, and education -- our stated purposes and tools to the future.
In the area of research, the Commission has funded the University of Georgia Poultry Science Department in the areas of yolk mottling and eggshell quality.
(Our guest columnist this week is Bill Sanders, Executive Secretary, Georgia Egg Commission, Georgia State Farmers Market, Forest Park, 30050.)
The results of these studies are already benefiting the industry.
Our education program continues through the efforts of Home Economics Coordinator, Mildred Huff. She appears on radio and television programs throughout the state. Her column "Eggcellent Ideas" appears in over 50 newspapers. Mildred also takes the Georgia Egg Story in person to thousands each year through personal appearances and demonstrations.
Today we are striving even harder to find new avenues of promoting the goodness of the Georgia egg. Special merchandising and marketing materials go out every week to stores all over the state.
We are working toward establishing new uses for the mass communications media in Georgia.
One of the major concerns to Georgia's egg industry today is the abundance of mis-information concerning cholesterol. We are working to inform the public of the truth in these areas and to establish regular lines of communication with health and medical officials throughout Georgia.
We welcome the help and suggestions of all Georgians in our efforts. We are now located in our new facilities at the State Farmers' Market in Forest Park. We invite you to come by and visit us or to write our office for free recipes and nutrition information. Our address is Georgia Egg Commission, 16 Forest Parkway, Forest Park, Georgia 30050.
FOREST FACT
Georgia leads all states in the amount of forest land in private ownership, and is second in the nation in the amount of commercial forest land.

"Know-How"
Buying Nursery Plants

When plants are bought at a nursery, be sure to learn something about the cultural practices needed to get the best growth from the plants.

No Difference
In Swine Feed
No matter how you slice it, the ham turns out about the same whether the hog was fed corn, wheat or grain sorghum.
That is the preliminary conclusion of a group of Texas Tech University researchers:from the Animal Science and Food and Nutrition departments on the Lubbock, Texas, campus.
Experiments on 120 pigs have been conducted on feeding value of various grains for swine and the study is nearing completion.
Some phases, however, still are in progress, according to Dr. Leland F. Tribble, swine specialist and project leader for the research.
Data on the performance of pigs fed corn, wheat or grain sorghum showed no "significant differences" in rate or efficiency of gains.
"From the data analyzed to date, we can conclude that there is little, if any difference in corn, wheat or grain sorghum when properly supplemented for growing-finishing swine as measured by performance of the pigs, carcass composition, processing characteristics and cooking and eating characteristics of the pork," Tribble said.

Never buy a plant without learning how large it grows, color of blooms, evergreen or deciduous in nature, exposure it will grow best in, and rate of growth. This information can be the difference between a successful and disappointing landscape planting over a period of time.
The nurseryman is often asked "How fast will it grow?" The buyer is interested in a small plant that will grow rapidly and make a good show in a short period of time.
This will lead to a great deal of pruning in the future years trying to keep the plants from overcrowding the house and garden.
Overgrown plants may cover win-

Crossbred Cattle
Produce On Pasture
Researcher Hollis Chapman, Tifton, has been experimenting with crossbred beef grown entirely on pasture.
He has used Hereford, Santa Gertrudis, Charolais and Simmental sires, as well as Brown Swiss females. The Brown Swiss, he reports, have real potential for beef production.
In tests of Herefords against crosses of Simmental, Charolais and Santa Gertrudis on Herefords, Chapman found the Santa Gertrudis and the two import crosses had significantly greater carcass weight per day of age than the Herefords.
The Hereford nipped the Charolais cross for a slightly higher United States carcass grade (both were high good), but the Simmentalcrosses had less external fat and a slightly better yield grade than the other breeds or crosses.

Number 17
Congress '72 For Livestock Slated In June
All segments of the livestock industry will be represented in Atlanta, June 14-16, when the Livestock Marketing Congress-'72 is held.
Legislation, finance and movement - three areas which influence livestock profits - will be studied during the event.
The Congress program will be built around these three areas, with one major session devoted to each. Top spokesman from within and outside the livestock industry will address the general sessions and participate in panel discussions.
The meeting is designed for every business related to livestock production and marketing. In addition to livestock producers, feeders and marketmen, the congress will consist of bankers, transportation people and others who service and supply the livestock industry.
An Advisory Board of Georgians is working with the Livestock Merchandising Institute on plans for the Congress.
Tommy Irvin, Commissioner of Agriculture, is honorary chairman of the event. Other members of the Board are O'Dell G. Daniel, Head of the Cooperative Extension Service Animal Science Department, University of Georgia; Tom Dally, Social Circle, President, Georgia Stockyard Operators Association; State Senator Sam P. McGill, Washington, and State Representative Henry L. Reaves of Quitman.

We Get Letters

Dear Editor:
Please print some information in the BULLETIN for the ones who have plants for sale about sending them in the mail, especially young tender plants like tomato plants. These are rotten when received if they are wrapped in plastic or sent in milk cartons. The ones that are shipped with a wet rag on their roots and sent in a cracker box arrive in good condition. I'm sure other people have had the same trouble I have had when they receive their plants. Plants need air and they can't get it if they are wrapped in plastic or air-tight milk cartons, especially if they are mailed on Saturday and sit in the post office over the weekend. I have gotten where I am afraid to order anymore for I have received one good order out of five.
Name withheld by request Whitfield County, Georgia
(Editor's note: Thank you very much. We do encourage our advertisers to be most careful because in the long run it helps them with their business when plants arrive in good order as a result of proper packaging.)

What
Trilliums, poetically called Wakerobin, are a common sight in Georgia as nine different varieties of this plant can be found within the state boundaries. Prairie Wakerobin, Dwarf White, White, Red, Painted, Nodding, Toad, Yellow and Rose are all similar and vary only in size and flower color. Some of the flowers, however, are not as pleasant to the nose as others, hence the nickname "Stinking Benjamin" has evolved for the odoriferous members of the family.
Trilliums are easily recognized because their leaves and flower petals are in threes. The name, which comes from the Latin for "three", refers to this characteristic number in the floral parts and in the whorls of leaves.
For a beginner in growing wildflowers there is hardly a family more satisfactory than the Trilliums. They grow easily in hardwood shade and flourish with a good supply of leafmold. All may be propagated from seed, although it requires two years to germinate and two or three more before they get large enough to bloom.
Trilliums, while generally found in woods, do not necessarily require deep shade if their major soil requirements are met. Most need rich soil, acid or neutral depending on the species, that does not become bone-dry. Old clumps may be divided after flowering. When planting, the rhizomes should be set so they are covered by about 2 inches of soil.
You are most likely to find Trilliums in the company of their friends, Maidenhair Fern, Bloodroot, Wild Oats and Wild Ginger. Consequently, we encourage you to employ good conservation habits when you come across this rare and beautiful colony of wild flowers.

DON'T OVERCOOK
Save those nutrients! When boiling vegetables, cook only until they are tender in order to insure the best flavor, color, texture and food value. Overcooked vegetables not only look unattractive, but have a marked loss of flavor and food value, according to Extension home economist food experts at the University of Georgia.

THE MARKET BULLETIN

Horse enthusiast and star of television's Wells Fargo Dale Robertson, visited with the Tennessee Walking Horse Association recently. Robertson discussed Georgia's growing horse industry with Commissioner of Agriculture, Tommy Irvin and the department's equine coordinator, John
A. Smith.

Nursery Plants
(Continued From Page 1)
dows, crowd walks or create traffic hazards at corners and driveways.
It is better to get slower growth plants and have a little more patience. Some of the low or dwarf type plants will not grow to the size wanted as fast, but they are far less trouble when pruning time comes around.
Kurume Azaleas, Rotunda Holly, Heller Holly, Dwarf Yaupon Holly, Dwarf Burfordi Holly, Catoneaster, Andorra Juniper, Shore Juniper and Japanese Boxwood are a few of the lower type shrubs that require little pruning and are in scale with the low one story house.
Tall, rapid growing plants, such as Ligustrum, Elaeagnus and Photinia sometimes are used as foundation plants, but will be out of proportion with a low building in a few years if severe pruning is not practiced.
Use these plants with the large two story building, or for hedge and screening work.
In most cases, it is better to buy a few larger plants than it is to spend money on numerous rooted cuttings. There is a definite tendency to "over plant" when using a number of real small shrubs. It is difficult to adequately space these plants.
Buy plants from an established nursery, and trade with local concerns as much as possible.
Often a gardener gets plants that are not adapted to local conditions when ordering from other sections of the country that have extreme dif'ferences in climate and soils.
Creating Extra
Storage Space
by
Mary Frances White Extension Home Economist-Home
Management
The hunt for new and handy places to store things can be an exciting game. Start looking for storage possibilities in unused corners, under a stairway, the wall space on both sides of a window, the wall space between rooms, and on the front and back porches.
Think of every inch that might be set free. I'm always looking for storage space in bathrooms.
In one I found the shower separate from the tub, making it possible to have storage space above the tub. There was room for several shelves or built-in-cabinets.
You may need an extra bath. Turn dead space under stairs or at the end of a long hall into a powder room, extra bath, or tiny, private sitting room.

Onion Buying Time
Planning to buy some onions while they're in plentiful supply?
Look for hard or firm onions that are dry and have small necks. They should be covered with papery outer scales and reasonably free from green sunburn spots and other blemishes.
Avoid onions with wet or very soft necks, which usually are immature or affected by decay. Also avoid onions with thick, hollow, woody centers in the neck or with fresh sprouts.
Straight line
I am a hog producer in south Georgia and was sure sorry to hear about the cholera outbreak. But I knew this was coming because of the way the stock yards were doing. There are two stock yards in a town near Glennville. One of these yards buys pigs on their regular sale day. These pigs are held until their feeder pig sale at which time they are inspected by a local Inspector.
This is not right, and is one of the reasons things like cholera happen. These State Inspectors need a good talking to. Inspectors are not doing their job when they let this go on.
No Name
If you will furnish us with the information as to what barns are doing this and the inspectors in volved, we will be more than happy to investigate. We could have helped you much sooner if you had included your name and address with y*ou*r *letter.
How can I get rid of ground moles? Also, my gardenias have white flies around them and a black something on the leaves. What will get rid of this?
Mrs. E. C., Hortense
Plant mole beans, also known as castor beans, for control of moles. The white flies around your gar denias causes the black mold. Spray with Cygon for control of the flies and then wash the leaves of your plant with a mild detergent to get rid of the mold.
Could you identify the enclosed beetle? I have found several in my house and wonder if they cause damage similar to termites.
Mrs. R. K., Twin City
The insect is a spider beetle. He feeds on other dead insects and animal products. It is harmless to wood in the home.

EATING POTATOES Potato consumption, which went down in the 1950s, was back up to 110 pounds per person as the decade of the '70s started. The reason: the wide use of processed potato products. And the leading form of processed potatoes? French fries, of course! Every year, nearly 35 million 100-pound bags of potatoes go into fries.
