Agrirama Museum
To Preserve Past
Some day soon, hopefully by 1975, the doors will officially open to the Georgia Agrirama, a facility many feel will quickly become Georgia's third major tourist attraction.
To be located on a 47-acre site adjacent to 1-75 at Tifton, the
Georgia Agrirama will feature an agricultural museum for artifacts dating back to Indian agriculture and including a "Futurist ' c Section" on farm and rural life of the future, a farm village and farmstead, a 12-acre lake and an official Georgia Welcome Center.
The purpose of the Agrirama is to preserve the past, explain the present and predict the future of agriculture in the South while

providing a major South Georgia tourist attraction. The idea was introduced several years ago by State Senator Ford Spinks who suggested the establishment of a small museum to preserve agricultural relics.
Senator Spinks mentioned the project to the University of Georgia College of Agriculture Alumni Association which readily adopted the Agrirama as a special project. The General Assembly passed a bill allocating $100,000 for initial construction and naming the facility a unit of the University System and an adjunct to the Coastal Plain Agricultural Experiment Station at Tifton.
Construction of the lake is underway now and work on the first building will begin as soon as sufficient funds are available.
The Agrirama will be administered by a 14-member Board of Governors representing various state and professional organizations. Once completed, the Agrirama will be self-supporting using nominal admissions charges for the museum, the farmstead and the village.
The museum will contain farm implements typical of southland cultivation. Many donations have already been received. Included in the museum will be a souvenir shop, a conference room for meetings and lectures, and a dining area.
The farmstead will typify scenes from a small, family-sized homestead at the turn of the century and will include a farmhouse, a

Pruning Time For Muscadines
CUTS M*OE MERE
TRUNK
POST-
.cr-CANE
..
A method of pruning muscadines.
Pruning of muscadine grape vines is not difficult if done every year. December is the best month for this job. Pruning in early fall or late winter causes excessive "bleeding" and may weaken the plant.
What do you remove in the pruning process? The-main arms trained along the trellis wire have nodes and internodes (joints). Buds at the nodes or joints grow into canes during the summer and must be pruned off in the winter.
The current season's growth is cut back to two or three buds, forming short spurs from which new growth is produced the next spring. It is important to encourage this new growth (by pruning and early spring fertilization) because this is where the fruit is produced the next year.
Greenery Requires Special Handling
The greens and reds symbolize Christmas. They not only bring beauty and joy into our homes at this season, but in these days of artificial decorations, they also bring a feeling of nostalgia thoughts of Christmases of by-gone years. , The greens of Christmas should not be a problem, but rather should be enjoyed. They should be longlasting and safe. To make them so
requires some special handling. When cutting greens for indoor
decorations, take a pail of water along and place the branches in it as soon as they are cut.
If this is not practical, use a large plastic bag in which you have placed several water-soaked paper towels. This will help the branches retain their moisture.
Back home, split the stems two to three inches at the base and sub-
merge all of the branches in cold water for eight hours or longer. Select a cool place, such as the basement, in which to condition the
branches. Wooden, earthenware or plastic
containers are best for this. After eight hours, remove the branches but leave the split ends in water until you are ready to take them inside.
"Living Gifts" lor Christmas
Offer Unlimited Possibilities
Why not a "living gift" this Christmas? Your thoughts and generosity will be
long remembered.
Just think of the wide choice of shrubs, trees, vines, bulbs, and perennials that are adapted to Georgia conditions, not to mention the wide choice of house plants
available. Today's market has many
beautiful tubs, urns, bird feeders, fountains, pottery, and garden statuary that make welcome gifts.
Plants offer unlimited possibilities for gift ideas. Fruiting plants such as hollies and pyracantha make
Stems-of the Christmas cactus arch gracefully from a hanging basket.
Seedling Hollies
Not Desirable
The American holly is an excellent specimen tree for Georgia yards. In most areas of the state seedling American holly can. be found in abundance in the woods. However, homeowners who collect hollies from the woods are usually disappointed in the results.
First, only the female plants will produce berries. It is not possible to know if a plant from the woods is a female until it becomes large enough to produce flowers or berries. Therefore, the collector runs the risk of obtaining a male, nonfruiting plant.
In addition, it is possible that the plant is a female but is a shy berry
beautiful gifts. With the red berries and glossy green foliage they can be wrapped most attractively. Balled
and burlapped plants or container grown plants may be wrapped with
green burlap and tied with a big red bow.
What better gift than a couple of
trees or a group of shrubs? A small tree such as a nicely branched dogwood, crabapple, or a large tree such as an oak, pine, maple, hickory, elm, holly, or beech would be most useful and desirable.
Pot plants and hobby plants are a
joy to give as well as receive, but make sure you know what con-
ditions are best for them. If you receive one and have questions, call the florist who delivered the plant. He will be happy to help you keep your plant in its most beautiful
healthy condition. Plants for Christmas is not a
unique idea, but by careful selection you can find a most welcome and
unusual gift.
producer. Also, seedling hollies vary a great
deal in plant shape and foliage characteristics.
For these reasons, it is desirable to purchase a named variety of American holly from a nursery instead of collecting it from the wild. This way you can be assured of desirable characteristics.
A Living Tree
lor Christmas
Why not a living tree this Christmas? The traditional cedars, pines, yews, hemlocks and spruces are more closely associated with Christmas, but other trees can be used.
This may not strike a familiar Christmas note, but a well shaped dogwood may be trimmed to make ^an attractive holiday decoration.
Whatever kind of living tree you use, the ball of earth around the roots should be handled carefully to prevent breaking. Placing the ball in a ceramic tub or planter makes for an attractive base, as well as one you can put water in to keep the tree alive.
Damp peat moss or vermiculite packed around the ball will help hold the moisture. This will give the tree a better chance of living after you plant it in the yard.
Poinsettia Plants
Need Tender Care
Many Georgians will be receiving poinsettia plants during the holiday season. If your poinsettia plant is to stay in good shape throughout the Christmas season, you'll need to give it tender, loving care.
The poinsettia is a native of the warmer regions of Mexico. This is our main clue to its care a warm, humid atmosphere.
This means that we should study the temperature, light, humidity and freedom from drafts of the various locations where we might place the poinsettia.
Select a location where the plant will have the most uniform temperature of 60-75 degrees during the day. The best night time temperature will be around 60-degrees. The location should also be one which receives bright light ... but not direct sun.
Poinsettias are very sensitive plants. Drafts, too cool or too warm temperatures, sudden temperature changes, low humidity, improper watering or dim light all adversely affect the plant.
It must be remembered that a pot plant like the poinsettia, once in the home, is in a very different environment from the one in which it was grown. It must be given plenty of care.

We Get Letters
Dear Editor: I have boiled my last egg this morning. I picked pieces of
shell for 10 minutes. Isn't there an easy way to take the shell off a hard-cooked egg?
Lillie Seaton Carrollton, Georgia
(Editor's note: After you have brought eggs and water to a boil, reduce heat and cook about 20 to 25 minutes. Put eggs in cold water until they are cold enough to handle and roll the egg gently between hands to completely crush the shell. Hold eggs under cold running water while peeling.)
Dear Editor: Thank you so much for sending me the information on
controlling mildew. I would like to add one thing to your information on keeping mildew out of the bathroom. After you bleach the ceramic tile, be sure to rinse with cold water. Then scour the tiles with ammonia to kill all mildew spores. This prevents them from coming back.

Although cranberries are not commonly grown in Georgia, we are all reminded of their importance during the holiday season.
Our native cranberry is a creeping and trailing plant, somewhat woody and with minute elliptic, evergreen leaves. The nodding flowers are borne on short erect stalks, each corolla divided almost to the base into four separate petals.
The cranberry plant thrives on marsh land, bogs or peaty swamps from Newfoundland to Minnesota, south to Illinois and North Carolina. In the fall these bogs turn a vivid red and the large, firm, tart berries are ready for harvesting.
In the old days, harvesting was done by men crawling through the vines collecting the berries with a wooden scoop. Now the berries are collected with machines pushed through the bogs like lawn mowers. In some places, the bogs are flooded and the berries float to the top, making collection easier.
From the fields the berries are taken to a packing plant where they are cleaned and given the bounce test. Good cranberries bounce ... bad ones don't. Here they are fed over a series of "baffle boards" and are divided according to how well they bounce off the boards. The least lively of the lot drop out and are discarded.
In order to pass inspection, fresh cranberries must be clean, mature and firm, and free from damage. Cranberries don't bruise as easily as some fruits but crushed berries and those that are leaky should not be used.
Agrirama Museum
(Continued From Page 1)
barn, complete with corn crib, hay loft and animals, a poultry house, a smoke house and a cane mill capable of grinding cane and making syrup.
The village will include a small church, a one-room schoolhouse, country doctor's office, dentist's office, cotton gin, livery stable, village blacksmith and a cotton warehouse, all designed with appropriate furnishings.
Other features of the village will be a turpentine still, country store, post office, barbershop, drug store, lawyer's office, hardware store, small town depot and a rooming house.
Visitors, will see actual crops growing, too, in several small plots which will emphasize Georgia's leading agricultural crops.
As you can tell, the Georgia Agrirama is an ambitious undertaking, one which we feel will be of significant value to the state. We are encouraging donations for the museum. Arrangements can be made through Dr. Frank King, Resident Director, Coastal Plain Experiment Station, Tifton, Ga. 31794.

Potato Christmas Cards Agricultural
Are Original, Creative
Everyone finds pleasure in creating something for Christmas all by himself. One of the easiest things for old and young alike is the potato Christmas card.
For materials, you need one solid potato, a scratching tool (pencil, round-nosed scissors, or orange stick), white construction paper ~ the larger sheets may be cut into eight cards, a paint brush, tempera paint in Christmas colors, an absorbent cloth for wiping off the potato, and a black felt-tipped marking pen.
Cut the potato in half so that each surface is flat. The potato should be relatively large to avoid breaking
while printing. With the scratching tool, draw the design into the flat surfaces of the potato, keeping the
design as simple as possible. Use the paring knife to cut around
the design about 1/8 inch deep. Then remove the background by cutting the outer part of the design away, giving the design a raised ef-
fect. After the design is finished, cover
the surface of the design with tempera paint and press the potato down on a scrap of paper to test the print. A single application of paint will make three or four printings.
Several colors can be applied to
the design at the same time to provide an interesting effect. The natural moisture in the potato will make the colors blend, producing more colorful designs.
After the potato prints are dry, add to the cards by taking tempera paint and a brush with a flat edge and painting around the edges of the card for a framed look. Although not necessary, the framed effect adds a nice finishing touch to the card.
Next take a black felt-tipped pen
and letter the cards with your own Christmas greeting. Don't try to be perfect. Little imperfections add to the originality. Don't forget to sign your name on the back of the card. Envelopes can be bought at the dime
store.

When cotton seed meal loses its bright color, does it lose its high protein also?
V. M., Newnan
CANDLE HOLDER
Equipment needed: 1 half gallon milk carton with the pointed end folded flat. 1 half gallon carton cut in half, velvet wrapping paper or felt, decorative trim, styrofoam, Christmas flowers, greenery, grapes and a candle. (Fill the carton with sand, paper or a heavy substance.)
1. Cover 1/2 gal. carton smoothly. 2. Cut other carton in half and cover smoothly. 3. Place the whole carton on the longest side and place the cut carton centered with the cut edge up. Fill top with a block of styrofoam. 4. Trim with decorative trim to suit your taste. 5. Place your candle on top of the styrofoam. (stick with florist clay) 6. Arrange greenery at the base of the candle. Fill in flowers and a cluster of grapes.
HOMEMADE CANDLE
1. Melt paraffin wax in a boiler. (4 packs make a qt. size candle) 2. Tie a string on a pencil. Place pencil across top of carton with string
hanging inside. 3. Place ice cubes around string in the carton. 4. Pour melted wax into the ice filled carton.
5. Allow to harden and time for ice to melt. 6. Peel away carton and cut wick off pencil. (If you desire a colored candle, sliver a crayon and stir into wax)
Mr. Cecil Spooner, Feed and Fertilizer Division, advises that based on studies done by his division, cotton seed meal does not lose its protein value or con tent when the color loses its brightness. In many cases, this is just a color change only, mostly based on the environment in which it is stored. The meal itself is just as good as it w* a*s *before.
How many days should bulls be stable fed before they are slaughtered for the meat not to taste of wild onions? Also, how long should beef be aged before it is packaged?
Mrs. G. C., Jefferson
Can you plant dogwood berries, if so, when?
L. C., Commerce Dogwood berries can be planted in fall or spring. Rub off the soft coating on wire and dry. Then plant. Follow the same procedure with holly berries. If you have the berries and have not planted them yet, put in sand in a jar and store in the refrigerator until spring.
