Georgia Harvest
Looking Good
During the past few weeks, I have had the opportunity to make several quick trips through the state and see and talk to many farmers about this year's crop conditions.
After many marketing problems Georgia tobacco farmers were able
to dispose of their crop in a fairly orderly manner without the necessity of a clean-up sale.
It took quite a bit of perseverance to
maintain enough buying time to market our tobacco. However, the quality and quantity of this year's tobacco was excellent and therefore afforded growers a good return on their efforts. PEANUTS A similar situation has existed with our peanut farmers. Although the quality and quantity of this year's goobers are excellent, the rain and wet delayed harvest. Then with excellent harvest weather breaking, everyone was trying to market at one time. This has caused some chaos. But due to record yields of 2,300 pounds an acre, excellent harvest weather and good prices, most farmers came out fine when the rush was over. Florunners yielded exceptionally high and were being graded high, bringing as much as $300 a ton. CORN Corn harvesting also ran behind schedule. But due to the same good harvest weather that helped peanut farmers, it is coming in rapidly now. County agents and farmers tell me the crop looks exceptionally good for '71, especially after last year's blight. Forecast is 83,048,000 bushels a real improvement over last year's blight production of 44,206,000 bushels, and maybe a record crop for Georgia. Prices are down some due to the high yield, but farmers should be able to make this'up with quantity. SOYBEANS Soybeans were called "good" by most farmers and agents, and pastures looked good except those
counties having spittle-bug problems.
Up around my home area, Habersham County, apples and vegetables were being harvested and looked good to me.
Some pecan groves were continuing to drop the crop - perhaps due to scab, but a substantial production increase over last year looks promising.
COTTON
Georgia's 1971 cotton crop is forecast at 300,000 bales. The estimate is 10,000 bales above last month, 8,000 bales above the 1970 crop and 18,000 bales more than produced in 1969.
Yield per acre is indicated at 374 pounds ~ 6 pounds per acre more than the 1970 average.

When a state has an inspection program at least up to the level of federal inspection as does Georgia, consumers can be sure any meat products they buy have met high standards of wholesomeness.

Before a processing plant is granted inspection, it has to have blueprints of its plant, equipment and facilities approved by the Georgia Department of Agriculture, to assure that it can be kept clean and is capable of producing sanitary products. Georgia has approximately 275 processing plants.

Among the important people in the meat inspection program are the veterinarians who are stationed in plants under inspection. Their professional training is basic to preventing unfit livestock and poultry from becoming food on your table.
Inspection for wholesomeness co'vers all steps of packing and processing. It starts out in the holding areas, where livestock are still alive and where any obvious sickness can be detected. It continues after slaughter and throughout all steps of processing.
Inspectors detect any abnormalities and it's the job of the veterinarian to rule on any unusual condition and to condemn animals or parts of animals suspected of being diseased, and thus of being unfit for food.
Inspection provides the best assurance that the meat products offered the Georgia consumer are wholesome and safe to eat.

FARM INCOME
Gross farm income in 1971 will grow by about $1 billion from last year's $56.2 billion. Most of the increase, according to USDA, will come from crop receipts. USDA points out, however, that realized net farm income will trail last year's $15.8 billion. This reflects the persistent rise in farm expenses.

Bergamot, also known as Beebalm and Horse-mint, has always been widely cultivated. The three species of Bergamot are all popular and sought after for their lovely flowers and aroma.
Monarda didyma variety (commonly called Oswego-Tea after the tribe of Indians who used the leaves to make tea) is probably the most familiar with its lovely scarlet heads. This member of the Mint family is most often found in moist meadows or along stream banks where it usually grows to about 3 1/2 feet tall. The bright red flowers are very showy, each individual flower resembling the claw of a cooked lobster. The leaves are deeply veined and strongly aromatic.
Monarda fistulosa, otherwise known as Lavender Bergamot and Horse-mint, makes lovely drifts of lavender along country roads in midsummer. This variety is tallgrowing and is usually found in semi-shady and moist surroundings from Maine to Florida.
Monarda didyma is much smoother in texture and far less aiomatic. The lavender flowers are also claw-shaped and emit a very delicate mint fragrance when they flower in July and August.
All Bergamots are long-lasting when in bloom. They adapt well to a variety of soils and are easy to establish. Their only fault is that these are strong plants and will crowd out more fragile flowers.
There is no technique for growing the Bergamots. They will tolerate any soil that does not become bone-dry although they do prefer moist conditions and will soar to as much as 6 feet if given proper nourishment and attention.
The Bergamots are perfect for naturalizing for bold effects. Drift them along split-rail fences, against stone walls, along drives or paths where their minty fragrance can be enjoyed. They make good companions for naturalized Daylilies and as an added feature, the flowers are long-lasting in arrangements.

Please advise what causes grub worms to get on my carport each fall?
G. H., Buford
According to the grub worm expert (Grubby), dry weather in the fall causes these worms to move around. Spray or dust Sevin around your car port for control.

I am planning to build a REAL log cabin and need to know what to chink between the logs with.
L. C., LaFayette
According to Mr. Paul Crawford,
Jr., Director, Extension Engineering
Department, Cooperative Extension
Service, red mud was the traditional
material used to chink between logs.
It occasionally had to be replaced
but the cost is almost nothing.
Another method is a mixture of
cement and sand made up into a
rather stiff mixture. Cracks that are unusually wide might need to have
some nails driven in part way to help
hold the chinking material until it
sets.
****
Can you advise me of a pet shop or
commercial establishment that has bats
for sale? I have had no luck trying to
locate some.
S. F., Vidalia
The only place we were able to locate where one may purchase such creatures as bats was Animal World
of Miami, Inc., P. O. Box 4487, Hialeah Lakes, Florida 33014.

I save my garden seed each year and
need to know what I can do to keep
them from being eaten up by bugs and
insects.
Mrs. E. S., Farmmgton
According to Mr. E. E. Winstead,
State Seed Analyst, these seed should be completely dried. If you have
small quantities, they can be stored
in glass containers. These can be
protected from insects by sprinkling
Malathion dust on the seed and
mixing them up before placing them
in the containers. If you have a large quanitity of seed, treat them with
Malathion, put in bags and check
every two to three months for signs of
insect damage. These may be retreated as needed. Be very careful
that no seed, such as lima beans, which have been treated with an in
secticide are later used for eating
purposes.
****
Please identify the enclosed bean; is
it edible?
E. M., Statesboro
This was a sword bean and is edible. However, like most of the large beans such as the Jack bean and Horse bean, it would be rather mealy.

We found a snake that was black, yellow and white, and had an odor. What is it and is ii poisonous?
Mrs. C. S., Bogart
Mr. Hubert Handy, Chief of Game with the Game and Fish Commission, advises that this was probably a rat snake, common to your section of the state. When caught or disturbed, these snakes may excreet a fowl smelling fluid from glands at the base of the tail. They are all fast active snakes and are non-poisonous. Mem bers of this family are beneficial to man since they prey on rodents that harm crops, grains, and vegetables.

the weeds. Five to seven pounds of seed per acre usually give the desired stand of one plant per six to twelve inches.
Excessive lodging is likely to occur at higher populations. Cultivation is necessary to control weeds for four or five weeks after planting. Treflan may be used to reduce the number of cultivations
needed. In about ninety days the seed will
be mature. An additional two to four weeks will be necessary for the
