Swine Growers
Promote Pork Fare
The aims of the Georgia Swine Growers Association, which is more than a quarter of a century old are:
1. To promote the swine industry of Georgia to a point where we at least produce all of the pork we consume in Georgia.
2. To promote pork consumption through improving the quality of pork and cured meat.
3. To give Georgia's agriculture industry a better balanced program.
For many years Georgia has been one of the leading swine producing states east of the Mississippi river. It

ACC Ballots Out
For Tobacco, Peanuts
The referendum period for the reballoting of the Georgia Agricultural Commodity Commissions for Peanuts and the A.C.C. for Tobacco began January 14. All producers have been mailed ballots to mark and return and are urged to return this ballot prior to February 12, 1971.
If you are a tobacco or peanut producer and did not receive a ballot, contact the Georgia Department of Agriculture, Commodities Promotion Division, Room 324, Agriculture Building, Capitol Square, Atlanta, Georgia 30334.

It's Time To Fertilize
For Good Pecan Yield
R. L. Livingston, Head Extension Horticulture Department
University of Georgia Pecan trees are like any other crop - such as cotton, corn or peanuts - they need to receive annual applications of fertilizer elements. The pecan nuts are borne on current year's wood at the terminal end of twigs, and they are best supported on twigs that are six to eight inches in length. To ojbtain twigs of this nature a good fertilization program is an absolute necessity.
Pecan trees are the latest of most trees, domesticated and/ or wild, in our region to bud and begin growing in the spring. Even so, this process does begin each year either in late

among the states in swine production. As the swine industry continues to move south we hope to improve our ranking. In 1969 the swine
industry returned $98,000,000 to Georgia farmers.
Forty years ago most hogs in Georgia were finished by "HoggingOff Crops" in the fall and winter. The main crop hogged off was peanuts in South Georgia. Today practically all hogs are finished on corn and protein

The way you wrap meat and poultry for storage is important in maintaining wholesomeness.
Wrap products loosely for refrigerator storage, but tightly for freezer storage. Always wrap meat or poultry items for freezing in a moisture-resistant material, such as aluminum foil or freezer paper.
You can refreeze meats and poultry if they still contain ice crystals or if they're still cold and haven't been held at refrigerator temperatures longer than two days.
However, refreezing can lower product quality.

This pecan tree shows the full effects of a good fertilization program over a successive number of years.

fertilizers should be applied to the soils approximately six weeks prior to the time the trees begin growing, which means a February application.
Generally, the basic fertilizers that are needed for pecans include nitrogen, phosphorus, potash and zinc. Sometimes they require calcium, manganese, magnesium and iron.
A pecan grower should never lime his pecan soils without first taking a soil sample to determine the pH. The ideal pH is around 6.0, and lime recommendations begin when the pH drops below 5.6. The NPK, which is nitrogen, phosphorus and potash, is

supplement and a large portion of this is in confinement on concrete or slotted floors.
To carry out the original aims of the association, the growers sponsor state 4-H and FFA swine projects, yearly swine short courses and two state barrow shows, as well as promoting other county and state swine shows and sales.
Perhaps the most important program sponsored has been the Boar Test Program at Tifton where breeders enter eight week old pigs meeting certain requirements, to be fed individually so that comparative growth rate, feed efficiency and back fat thickness may be determined. Georgia has been a leader in swine testing and this program, over a period of twelve years, has done more to improve the economic characteristics of our swine and to improve pork quality than any other one thing ever done for the swine industry in Georgia.
The association has cooperated with the State Department of Agriculture and Animal Disease Diagnostic Laboratory in eliminating hog cholera in Georgia. It also works very closely with the extension service and others in the university system in programs promoting swine.
The Georgia Swine Growers
Association is an organization through which the swine producers are trying to help themselves. Its membership is open to each and every swine producer in Georgia, no

15. This fertilizer may be added as dry,
granulated material distributed on the soil with power equipment, such as tractors, trailers, trucks or even by human hands where only a few trees are ipvolved. The same formulations may be applied in liquid form by machinery.
The rate of application on a peracre basis of trees that are considered mature - and this is usually those that are twenty years old or older - is 1,000 pounds of a 10-10-10 per acre per year applied in February.
For younger trees, the rule of the thumb is to use three pounds per inch in trunk diameter, measuring the trunk two feet above the soil line, or the same rate for each year the tree has been growing. A 15-year old tree or a tree that has a trunk diameter of 15 inches would receive 45 pounds of fertilizer materials.
Zinc sulfate may be needed to correct or ward off a condition known as rosette. Rosette is a dying back of* many of the short twigs all over the trees due to the lack of zinc.
About three to five pounds of zinc sulfate per tree will be adequate for two or three years, and before a second application is applied a soil test should be obtained to determine the amount of zinc present in the soil.
Next August pecan growers are invited to obtain leaf samples and have them analyzed through their county agents to determine what elements are present in the trees and

matter how large or small.

We Get Letters

Dear Editor:

I have a mirror that is damaged on the back. Can this be repaired or redone at home; if so how and with what? If it will have to be done by a professional, please send me a name and address. Your help or that of a reader will be
welcomed. Mrs. E. Donaldson, Jr.
R.F.D. tt 1, Box 41
Metter, Ga. 30439

(Editor's note: While there is a "home remedy" for mirrors, most home economists do not recommend it as safe or practical. Best results are achieved by a professional and we have sent you several names of people who do this kind of work.)

Dear Editor:

In response to the letter to the Editor of your Jan. 13th issue, The Monastery of the Holy Spirit has organicallygrown vegetables for sale.

At this time of the year, we are limited to turnips, rutabagas and a few sweet potatoes. This spring we hope to have a variety of organically grown vegetables for sale here at the Monastery store.
Brother Anthony Monastery of the Holy Spirit Conyers, Ga. 30207

Dear Editor:

I would like to know if any of your readers have or could get sweet green onions and the large, flat sweet Bermuda onions. These cannot be found in Louisiana. We really enjoy receiving the BULLETIN and especially the recipes.

Mrs. LeNora Long Apartment 133 3700 East Brookstown Baton Rouge, Louisiana 70805

(Editor's note: We have sent you a list of nurseries that can supply these onions. A good supply of garden catalogs will provide a source for almost any plant. These catalogs are free for the asking from most nurseries.)

Want someone to furnish springs and custom plant 60 acres to Coastal Bermuda, get in touch with me at once. P.T. Patton, Shady Dale. Ph. 468-6869.
Will cut and clear hardwood trees from your farm. Ralph C. Swafford, Hickory Flat Rd., Woodstock. Ph. 9265111.

THE MARKET BULLETIN

Wednesday, January 27, 1971

Alligator pear or avocado, common names for Persea americana is a many branched evergreen tree easily grown in warm tropical locations. Although it is grown more in Florida and California where there is not likely to be frost, we can still buy one from the grocery store, enjoy a delicious salad from its fruit, save its seed, and have one of the most attractive and interesting house plants imaginable. To make the plant stick three toothpicks into the broad end to support the seed in a tumbler, keep the water level just touching the base. Within a few weeks the seed will sprout, thrusting a long white root into the water and then a stem bearing handsome glossy leaves, straight upward. It can be grown like this for some months, then by gradually adding soil to the water the plant can be transferred from a water to a soil medium and then carefully potted. If protected from frost it can be grown to a good sized plant or shrub which can be put -- pot and all - in the garden over summer and brought back indoors in the fall when frost danger increases. If they can be kept from frost, they grow easily and fast in well drained fertile soil on your own home grounds and this delicious fruit can become everyday fare.
Fertilize Now
(Continued from page 1)
in what quantity and what fertilizer recommendations should be made in February of 1972.
Pecan growing is a big business in Georgia. The gross income to growers in 1969 was above 25 million dollars. The yield in pecan nuts in 1969 was 88 million pounds. The 1970 yield was 45 million pounds, and even though it is somewhat early to predict at this time what the yield will be in 1971, it probably will be larger than the past year of 1970.
Fertilizing is only part of the game in producing pecans. The soil needs to be managed from a standpoint of weed competition, and insects , and diseases need to be controlled through a spray program.

Budget Your Money

To Stretch Income

A budget is a tool to help you spend money wisely and reach your goals. Each family should design a budget which can be adapted to its own needs and income. Preparing a budget takes planning and following a budget takes

be included in the planning. The first step in making a budget
is to set your goals. Decide what your family may really need or want.

years, and long-term goals. Of course, goals change as your family changes. You should revise your plans and your budget as your needs change. A family budget may cover any amount of time. However, if its your first

income. You need to know how much money you will have during the planning period.
To estimate your income, write down all funds you expect to receive during the planning period. This should include wages, salaries, social security benefits, pensions, allowances, and any other payments of all members of your family.
After you have figured your income, you should estimate your expenses. You can use records of family spending as a basis for your budget.

Plan expenses so that they are spaced at intervals. Keep your estimate of expenses where you can refer to them as necessary.
You can now set up your budget, basing it on the goals, income, and expenses of your own family.
You should set aside money for major expenses and future goals. Keep your set-aside or saving funds separate from your other money so you won't be tempted to spend it. The best way to do this is to set aside this money first. If you wait until the end of the week or month, you may not have anything left to save.

1 Straight Line

I have tried freezing french fry potatoes in my freezer but the potatoes turn dark brown or black. Can french fries be frozen and kept in the freezer?
M.F.M., Acworth
First, peel and scald the potatoes for three to five minutes depending on the size of the potato. Cool, drain, and package whole or sectioned in moisture proof bags. We mailed you a pamphlet on freezing foods at home which should be helpful.
I just bought a cow and want to pasteurize her milk. How do I go about this?
G.J., Powder Springs
Heat to 143 degrees stirring constantly. Let stand for 30 minutes at this temperature and then cool as quickl*y* a*s possible.
Could you please tell me if the 2% fortified lowfat milk is real cow's milk? H.L.N., Sharpsburg
Our Dairy division advises that this is real milk. It meets all the requirements for Grade A milk except that all the butterfat but 2% has been removed. Nonfat milk powder has been added to build up solids and make it more palatable.

I would like to know how to "rot out" mimosa and chinaberry tree stumps. I do not want to harm the nearby plants and flowers.
M.C., Cochran

Put nitrogen fertilizer on the stumps often and cover with soil. Keeping moist will cause stumps to rot much faster. Safe also.

I have heard that in planting watermelons you should choose a different location each year to get the best melons. Is this so?
R.G.B., Calhoun

It is always wise to rotate crops, n*o*m*atter what the crop is. I need some information on pastures. I have one with soil too hard to plow and would like to know the best grass seed to plant.
S.B., Cumming

We have mailed you a pamphlet on pastures which should answer all of

your questions.

I have two big oak trees in my yard. They have ivy growing up the sides and all in the tops of the trees. Will the ivy hurt the tree?
J.H., Summerville

Ivy will choke out the trees if left there, according to the Forestry Department. Cut the ivy about head high and let die off. Cut again when it grows back.

CRABAPPLES
How many crabapple trees in Georgia? There's no telling, says Cooperative Extension Service horticulturists. Incidentally, the fruits of these crabapples are ideally suited for spiced pickles or jelly. Some varieties will be ready in late August, others in September.
