Christmas Trees--
Another Ga. Crop
Georgia only produces about 15% of Christmas trees now being used in the State, but this percentage is rapidly increasing yearly. This state could become a large producer and eventually export yule trees.
Georgia's long growing season, soil and terrain adaptability to
grow several species in the mountains and coastal areas should cause more farmers to become interested in this low cost venture.
Specialized knowledge and some work is the key to producing quality yule trees. This knowledge can easily be secured through becoming a member of your Georgia Christmas Tree Growers Association. Attending growers meetings and talking with and visiting successful

growers are a few of the basic rules in trying to produce a good tree.
Keeping weeds and grass to a minimum and shaping trees is a must in this business, plus developing your local market as you grow. Only one to two acres are recommended to start, as the general idea is to grow into this business, instead of going into it.
Georgia farmers are reminded to check with the Christmas Tree Growers Association, Box 48, Tifton, or your local county agent before signing franchise growing contracts.
It is much better to be sure of the company or persons you plan to deal with. This will prevent waste of time and money.
Always secure Christmas tree seedlings from nurseries in your area. The plants will have a better chance of survival as they will be more climatized to your area.
Christmas trees by the millions will soon be harvested in almost every state of the Union. They will supply the demands of American families who want a real tree for their Christmas.
Millions of trees now growing on plantations will continue to provide this country with a substantial clean air resource. Through the photosynthesis process, Cristmas trees change polluted air into clean air.
An acre of growing Christmas trees will produce the daily oxygen requirements for 18 people, so take a deep breath when you visit a
Christmas tree orchard. Two research projects are now un-

Poultry Manure

As Plant Nutrient

As a source of plant nutrients,

poultry manure is a valuable by-

product of the poultry industry with

Georgia'a annual production having

a potential value of about $8

million.

This conclusion is drawn from

results of recent research conducted

in the University of Georgia College

of Agriculture Experiment Stations

by H. F. Perkins, professor of

agronomy, College Station, Athens,

and M. B. Parker, assistant professor

of agronomy, Coastal Plain Station,

Tifton.

The research scientists point out

that efficiency of plant nutrients in

poultry manure may not be

equivalent to the same quantity of

nutrients from commercial fer-

tilizers.

Also, excessive use of poultry

manure in single or repeated ap-

plications may be detrimental to

yields of some crops. They warn that continued use of

heavy rates of manure may result in

accumulation

of

some

micronutrients in amounts that

could be toxic to plants.

Dr. Ellington
Named Extension
Service Director
Dr. Charles P. Ellington has been named Director of the Cooperative Extension Service. He succeeds L. W. Eberhardt, Jr., of Athens, who retired August 31.
A Georgia native and 1950 graduate of the University of Georgia's
College of Agriculture, Dr. Ellington has been program director for the Maryland Agriculture Board since 1963.
Prior to holding that position, he served years with the Maryland Cooperative Extension Service. He received his master's degree from the University of Maryland in 1952 and his doctor's degree from Pennsylvania State University in 1964. For two years he was manager of plant research at the University of Maryland's Agronomy Department and joined the Extension Service as assistant extension specialist in soil conservation in 1952.
Dr. Ellington also served two years as a project leader in extension agronomy at Maryland. He is a native of Lindale and a graduate of Trion High School.
Mr. Eberhardt is now serving as Assistant Executive Secretary of the Georgia Cotton Commission.

It's Strawberry Time

In South Georgia

Strawberries are well known as a delicious fresh fruit for making pies or

cakes, freezing, preserving as jam or jelly, or just plain good by themselves.

South Georgians can get an early start with the earliest ripening fruit available,

as October and November are the months to plant strawberries in this section

of the state. Middle and north Georgians will have to wait until February or

March to plant.

S,traw.berries can .be grown suc-

cessfully on a wide range of soils,

but the best soils are those ranging

from a sandy loam to a very light

clay loam. Good air drainage is

essential to avoid late spring frosts.

Select a soil that holds moisture

fairly well.

Turn or break the soil eight to ten

The middle plant, set at the correct soil depth, will produce better fruit faster.

inches deep, working organic matter into the soil. Select soil not planted to vegetable crops during the past few years. This soil will have a lower

nematode population.

Summer cultivation every three

or four weeks (from July to planting

time) eliminates most weed growth.

About two weeks before setting

plants, harrow the soil, apply fer-

tilizer in rows, and prepare planting

beds so they will be firm on planting

date.

The fibrous roots of strawberry

In the matted row system, a stand of four to six plants per square foot is adequate for good yields. Beds are generally from 18 to 24 inches wide, leaving walkways to be used for picking fruit.

plants grow mainly near the soil surface. These roots make some irrigation advisable during most years. For new plants set in the fall, irrigation usually is needed to establish a good stand.

If irrigation is not supplied bet-

ro

ween harvest and November, many plants may die (mainly in September

and October) from lack of moisture.

Plants should be set at the same

depth that they grew in the nursery.

In the hill system, runners of plants are pinched off to prevent daughter plants, the first plant to develop on each runner, from developing. The hills can be set in one, two, or three rows per bed.

Submerging about two-thirds of the crown and leaving one-third of the plant above the soil line places the plants at proper depth.
Row width for planting strawberries is usually four to five

Rates Superior
The University of Georgia's Agricultural Information Division has tied with two other states for second place in the nation in the number of awards received by states from the American Association of Agricultural College Editors for excellence in agricultural communications.
The University of Georgia, Pennsylvania State University and the University of Illinois each received 18 awards at the annual conference of the Association in Cocoa Beach, Fla. Cornell University led all states
with 23 awards.
J. P. Carmichael, Extension editor and chairman of the Georgia Division of Agricultural Infor-
mation said that the communications critique and awards program is designed to recognize superior performance by information staff members in producing teaching, information and communications materials.

We Get Letters

Dear Editor: I have a nutty idea and am having trouble working out
some of the important details. There is a definite demand for Praying Mantid Egg Cases.
This insect eats other insects and is particularly fond of nice, young, tender aphids. Partly due to the fact that there is so much interest in proper environment and so much animosity towards chemicals that the demand for this is growing.
I find that they are available from various sources in California, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, etc. However, I understand from Dr. Woolford B. Baker that this insect is indigenous to our area and that they could easily be collected. I guess that's easy for him and not easy for me.
I'm wondering if there isn't available a teacher or a group of high school scientific minded youngsters who would collect Praying Mantid Egg Cases that we would then offer for sale.
I have tried to find someone at the University of Georgia, College of Agriculture, Department of Entomology interested in this "wild" idea but have been unable to do so.
I would appreciate anyone who is interested in my idea getting in touch with me.

THE MARKET BULLETIN

The Goldenrod that is blooming now along highways and in fields is an old friend to many of us and an annual enemy to hay fever sufferers. It is doubtful that many people want to have Goldenrod in their flower garden, although it is truly a beautiful autumn flower with rich color and feathery blossoms.
However, according to Mrs. Marjorie J. Dietz, author of FAVORITE WILD FLOWERS, Goldenrod is not the culprit responsible for hay fever; the villain being Ragweed which usually grows right alongside the lovely Goldenrod. If Mrs. Dietz is correct, many home gardeners might like to add this clumpy, upright plant to their home landscape for fall color.
Most Goldenrods are sun lovers although some species make pretty patches in open woodlands. A few, mostly those native to the mountains, are compact enough for rock gardens and retaining-wall use. Most are best in informal sunny borders in meadows, at the edge of woodlands, along drives, and in short, where nature put them in the first place.
The small ray-and-disk flowers are yellow and gold and are packed close together in panicles or racemes. They bloom continually through late summer and fall. The foliage of these plants varies greatly but most have numerous leaves which are sometimes coarse.
Goldenrod is easy to grow and will tolerate the poorest of soil. The flowers are especially long-lasting. Most Goldenrods perfectly fit the description of a weed: a plant out of place. They self-sow, but seedlings and mature plants are easy to pull up by hand.
The species most common to our area is the Solidago canadensis. This perennial is native from Newfoundland to Florida. It needs full sun and is too tall for all but special situations such as along fences or at the edge of woods.

derway in Georgia to find superior Christmas trees to be grown in this state. One project is under the guidance of Dr. James T. Greene, School of Forestry, Athens. The second is under the direction of Mr. Turner Davis, Georgia Experiment Station near Griffin.
Georgians are very fortunate to have these institutions doing research to replace some of our vanishing row crops in this state with an evergreen Christmas tree.

I have green algae growing on the white brick of my home. I have tried washing the brick with regular detergents but they don't work. There is also a black mildew on the white woodwork of my home and I would like to
paint the woodwork. vMrs. R. W., Cochran

The brick man advises using Copper Sulfate, available at your drug store, to kill the algae on the white bricks. Wash the woodwork with Sodium Hychorite, available at your paint store. Then use a good mildew resistant paint. Your dea*le*r *should have several available.
My walls are molded from the floor up about 12 inches. I am planning to repaint but it will be wasted money if I can't get rid of the mold. How can I kill it?
P. H., Woodstock

Wash the mold with tri-sodium phosphate, available at your paint store. This will also kill the spo*re*s *causing the mold.
Judging from the signs around our farm an alligator is killing our calves. There is a creek near the pond and apparently he came from the, creek. Is there a law in Georgia that makes it illegal to kill an alligator; if so, how do we capture this monster and what do we do with him when we do?
B. T., Vidalia

The Game and Fish Commission advises that it is against both federal

and state laws to kill an alligator. For further information, they suggest

that you contact J. D. Atchison, Deputy State Chief for the Southern

Region of the Game and Fish Commission, Law Enforcement Division,

P. O. Box 358, Metter.

Will gourd seed produce plants next year if planted in the spring? Mrs. G. C., Abbeville

The seed people advise that the seeds will produce plants next year if

plants in the spring.

***

What is the name of the enclosed bug? Is it poisonous? It bit my husband on the thumb.
Mrs. J. M., Acworth

Our Entomology division advises that it is a stag bettle or pinching

bug, not harmful.

***

Enclosed is an insect found around my boxwoods. Is it harmful? It makes a bed similar to ant beds.
Mrs. F. B., Chickamauga

Your bug is an ant lion or "doodle bug" -- harmless to plants. We have mailed you a pamphlet on boxwoods which should be helpful.
***
Please identify this skin. It was found inside a cabinet around electrical boxes.

Strawberry Time
(Continued on Page 8)
south Georgia, three-foot rows are satisfactory for less prolific varieties such as Dixieland and Pocahontas. Allowing for an 18-inch-wide strip to become matted, plants may be set 18 to 24 inches apart. Matting usually occurs during the first growing season.
In the hill system, runners of strawberry plants are pinched off to prevent daughter plants from developing. A daughter plant is the first plant to develop on each runner. The hills can be set in one, two or three rows per bed. Plants usually are spaced from 9 to 12 inches apart in the row and across the row, except in the one row hill. Reduce the number of leaves to about one-half, removing all diseased and injured leaves.
In general, on soils to which no manure has been added, 600 to 800 pounds per acre of a 5-10-15 commercial fertilizer should be broadcast before setting plants. An application of 300 pounds per acre of this fertilizer, applied June 1 as a sidedressing, helps in runner plant formation. Repeat a 600-pound application again in October to aid in the development of buds for the next year.
Fruit bud formation takes place in the short days of the late fall and early spring months.
Use only two applications of fertilizer on plantings after the first year. Applications should be 600 pounds per acre after harvest and again during early fall. This is at the

rate of approximately 1 1/2 pounds per 25 feet of row.
Broadcast the fertilizer over the entire bed when the foliage is dry. Remove the fertilizer from the leaves immediately with a broom or some other suitable object.
Using sawdust as a mulch around strawberry plants and in the middles will help to keep weeds under control and eliminate cultivation. Sawdust not only holds moisture, but helps to prevent soil temperatures from injuring the roots of the plant. Pine straw and other mulch materials are good also.
Your county agent has additional information on the care and selection of plants best suited to your area as well as information on insect and disease control.
