Georgians Vote
On Soybean ACC
Georgia's progressive agriculture has been alert enough to cash in on the opportunity offered by the booming soybean industry. In the six years from 1964 to 1970, the value of soybeans produced in the state increased from $6.1 million to $34.5 million.
During the same time, two giant soybean processing plants were constructed in Georgia. Together they can process 30 million bushels a year - about 2 1/2 times our annual production.
So soybean acreage in 1971 is expected to increase greatly.
Production, however, will still be far short of the beans used each year by Georgia's poultry and livestock -about 35 million bushels.
No doubt about it, soybeans offer the Georgia farmers a lot of advantages. Excellent markets that pay a premium for this crop are available. And soybeans is a crop that has no surplus problem. They are also an excellent crop for rotation with small grain. In fact, a 12-month land use plan can be carried out by proper variety selection.
Soybeans with winter grazing or grain can be completely mechanized, and thus require very little labor. It is a low investment crop, requiring less cash input than any other commonly grown field crop in the state. Soybeans can be an excellent cash

crop. At current market prices profits of about $100 per acre can be realized if high yields are produced.
A need exists, not only for more acres of soybeans, but more importantly, i'or higher yields. For example, the average Georgia farmer produced only 22.5 bushels per acre in 1970 while some farmers produced 40 bushels or more. This difference in yield is the difference between a highly profitable crop and a barely break-even crop.
For Georgia farmers to consistently produce 40 bushels or more per acre, much more know-how is needed. Agricultural research has lagged in soybean production until recent years. Consequently, yields have not kept pace with many other crops.
New and improved varieties are needed that will perform better under our conditions. More research is needed on weed control, subsoil fertilization, row spacing, trace elements, irrigation and other

Is it true that a mare in foal will abort if she eats fescue blooms? Also is there anything that can be used around horses that will kill flies? We have tried spraying them but need more control.
J. H., College Park
Our Veterinary division advises that although it has never been proven that fescue blooms cause abortion in mares, it has been highly suspected. They advise using any commercial spray that contains Malathion on stall walls, barn walls, and fences. * * *
How can I get my bantams registered with the American Bantam Association?
T. L., Dawson
Dr. John Schutze, Cooperative Extension Service, Athens, advises that you contact the American Poultry Association, Inc., Box 337, Great Falls, Montana, for information. You might also contact Poultry Press, Box 947, York, Penn.

What is the enclosed insect? F.M.L., Columbus
Entomology identified it as a little old harmless spiney-bellied spider.
Is it too late to plant October beans?
J.T., McRae
No, sir. ***
How can I kill the meal worms (maggots) that thrive in my worm bed? I put laying mash in my bed to make the worms grow but they don't seem to get any bigger because the meal worms eat all the feed and multiply. Now what?
C.H., Hortense
The Game and Fish worm expert, ("wriggles") mailed you a pamphlet which would clear this up.

What is wrong when tomatoes rot before maturity?
Mrs. B.C., Dalton
If your tomatoes are oft the ground and rot at the bottom end, they have blossom end rot. Use Blossom End Rot spray now and lime before planting next year.
I am enclosing some leaves from my azaleas. What is causing this damage and what, should I do?
G.L.H., Warner Robins
You and a lot of other Georgians are having this problem. It is a leaf gall caused by a fungus. Burn all of the old infected leaves as they will be a source of infection next year. Spray next spring during the blooming season with Manzate. We have mailed you a pamphlet on azaleas which should be helpful.
Tom Kirby, Director of the Weights and Measures Laboratory, checks the units of measure of a tape measure on the length bench.
Weights such as these used to check grocery store scales are calibrated at the lab before being used by department inspectors.
Weights And Measures Lab
Protects Ga. Consumers
Although services to the farmer and the agri-business industry have increased in keeping with modern farm technology, the biggest increase in department activity during the past few years has been in the field of consumer protection. Today, nearly half of the department's efforts are spent in this area of
activity.
A vital cog in the business of protecting consumers is the ultramodern weights and measures laboratory located at the State Farmer's Market off Interstate 75.
The laboratory assists the scale industry in the manufacture and proper calibration of scales and also works with manufacturers of volume
Stop Silo Fires
Before They Start
Silo fires are a threat to farmers. These fires are almost impossible to extinguish permanently before they burn themselves out-and that can take months.
On the record book are, one fire that burned from October to January and another that began in fall and was still active the following April.
Silo fires can get their start with only the slightest amount of outside air-air that filters through supposedly airtight walls, leaks through cracks or bolt holes or enters at unloading ports or doors.
Micro-organisms in the forage use oxygen trapped within the silage at filling time to cause the initial heating up, explain Extension forage specialists. After this oxygen is gone, outside air must enter to support slow oxidation and eventually spontaneous combustion.
There appears to be a critical moisture level-researchers believe it may be 45 percent-below which silage is apt to burn.
Consequently, unless a silo is known to be definitely airtight, it should not be filled with alfalfa, clover or grass silage containing between 20 and 45 percent moisture.
containers such as milk jugs and cartons to insure proper weight of such containers as well as proper volume.
In measuring milk, the contents are first checked for volume by weight which should be 8.6 pounds for one gallon. The contents are then poured into a special gallon flask to be checked for volume. Other sizes are also checked by this method.
Carbonated beverages are also weighed for volume. The weight is recorded, the beverage poured into a special measuring flask, and the can weighed. The can weight is then subtracted from the total weight, leaving the total weight of volume.
Ice cream is measured in fluid ounces for volume by mathematical formulas. One ice cream maker in Georgia was found to be putting too much ice cream in his containers.
Units of measure such as carpenter rules are checked to insure accuracy. A ten pound weight is attached to the end of the measuring tape to hold it flat on the length bench while the units of measure are inspected under a microscope.
Fabric that is sold in certain widths and lengths is checked for correct measure Knit fabrics stretch and cannot be measured in the fabric measure graph as is ordinary fabric. They must be measured by a yardstick. Both the measure graphs and yardsticks are tested in the lab to insure that they measure correctly.
A "problem child" of the iab is

RUSTY TOOLS
Here's a tip for removing rust from garden tools. Dip a soap-filled steel wool pad in pure kerosene or turpentine and scrub. When most of the rust has been removed and while the fluid is still on the tool, wad up a piece of foil and rub the tool briskly with it.

THE MARKET BULLETIN

We Get Letters
Dear Editor:
I am very interested in the culture of Ginseng. Does anyone raise it in Georgia and if so do they send it to China? Please tell me anything you know about this or who to contact for this information.
Mr. James R. Park 5931 Forest Ave. Birmingham, Alabama 35223
("Editor's note: It appears that you are not the only one interested in Ginseng, Mr. Park. We have had numerous inquiries about this perennial since we featured it in our "What 7s" column last year. To our knowledge no one in Georgia specializes in this plant but we have located additional information about its culture. This popular wild flower is featured in our "What Is" column again this week.)
Dear Editor:
I really do enjoy the MARKET BULLETIN. I would like for someone to send me recipes for cantaloupe preserves and pickled cantaloupe. I would appreciate if some of your readers would send this to me.

Recipes of the Week
YEAST CAKES I/4 cup hops l cup water 1 medium size potato I/ 4 cup flour I/ 2 cup corn meal Water to cover
Place V 4 cup hops in a pan and cover with 1 cup water. Let this corn reach a boil/ reduce heat, and simmer 20 minutes with pan covered. This should yield I/ 3 cup hops water after straining. Peel and slice the potato into another pot. Use just enough water to cover and boil until well done. Drain. This should yield 1 cup of potato liquid. Mix hops water and potato liquid, and while still hot, pour over I/ 4 cup flour and I/ 2 cup corn meal making a stiff paste. Let cool; then roll into cakes, using 2 tablespoons of paste for each cake. Dip cakes in additional corn meal and roll until easily handled. Dry for several days on wire rack, turning daily. They may be used immediately, but they must be perfectly dry before storing in cool place or the refrigerator. Yields 16 cakes.
Ms. Anneliese Boerste 2609 Bridge Road Augusta, Georgia 30906
PEACH JAM
To each pound of peeled and sliced peaches, allow 3/4 pound of sugar. Crush peaches, combine with sugar in alternate layers and let stand until some of the juice is extracted, about 3 or 4 hours. Then heat slowly until sugar is dissolved, stirring meanwhile. Bring to boiling and cook, stirring constantly until peaches are clear and the jam somewhat thick. Pour into hot sterilized jars. Process in hot-water bath at simmering temperature 15 minutes.

Animal Science Has Calendar
Not too many years ago Ginseng seed was featured in American seed catalogs with instructions on how to grow it as a commercial crop for its tuberous roots which were to be shipped to China. The Chinese believed they possessed aphrodisiac as well as other medicinal values although this claim has never been substantiated. Nevertheless, Ginseng was grown and collected from the wild and has consequently been wiped out of many areas where it
once flourished. Ginseng as well as the dwarf
variety is a shade lover and is most at home in a woodland garden where humus-rich soil will retain moisture in periods of drought. The preferred planting time of Ginseng is fall when plants propagated from seed can be sown for spring germination.
The foliage of this plant is deep green with compound leaves on a long petiole divided palmately into five segments. Each leaflet is about two inches long and has toothed margins.
The flowers are not particularly attractive due to their greenish color but the cluster of red berries in early fall adds autumn color to their woodland habitat. The Dwarf Ginseng has much prettier flowers, sparkling white or pink, in a lacy cluster and displays yellow berries in the fall.
Ginseng can make an interesting accent in the woodland garden with its stiff symmetrical form, although the Dwarf Ginseng is preferred for its more appealing personality in the garden. Both species, however, are very difficult to dig and should be left in their natural state if possible.
The best reason to grow Ginseng is as a conservation measure since it has disappeared from so many areas.
Weights & Measures

polyethylene. This is checked in a special machine for thickness and "fish eyes" -- defects in the plastic.
The laboratory is responsible for insuring that weights used by department inspectors, such as store scales, fertilizer scales, and feed and seed scales, are accurate. The laboratory also works with many segments of industry, providing special services and research. For instance, the lab recently worked with a major rubber company on methods for testing tensile strength of fibers used in tires.
Pre-packaged foods, such as fresh meats and vegetables, are also weighed by inspectors in the stores as well as in the lab to guarantee that consumers get accurate weights and measures in all purchases.
Specialized services of the department's weights and measures laboratory are virtually unlimited in today's modern world and extend into areas of commerce and industry far removed from agriculture alone.
Challenge, Excitement
Animal agriculture means farms, ranches, feedlots, processing plants, charcoal steaks and so forth. It means world starvation, malnutrition and disease. It means food and clothing for billions and employment for millions. The challenge and opportunity in animal agriculture is unprecedented and unparalleled. The world's population will supposedly double by the year 2000. Consequently, the world's food supply must more than double as we keep pace with the population explosion and endeavor to raise the standard of living of the world's population.
The great wealth of food produced by America's agriculture is topped by livestock products, particularly meat. MEAT - red, juicy, flavorful, strength giving meat that makes our nation great.
Meat is not just something to eat. It is fuel for real living. It is packed with high-quality protein, loaded with minerals and_ vitamins, and its

consumption allows Americans to live longer, run faster, hit the ball harder, think straighter and do things better.
Equally as exciting is the study of meat production and the actual production itself. The animal science curriculum is not easy but it offers an opportunity to study those vital subjects such as genetics, nutrition and physiology as they apply to the proeducation of beef cattle, swine and sheep.
Also, basic agriculture such as forage and crop production and the economic principles which apply to any business are covered.
Animal scientists devote their efforts to getting a better grade of meats on your table. They study ways to make their animals gain the maximum amount of weight. That makes for more meat.
They even go so far as to wage war against those diseases which cripple domesticated animals. Did

practices. Results of research needs to be
given the farmer quickly so that it can be profitably used. This stepped up research and educational effort must be supported by the soybean farmer and this can be accomplished through Soybean Commission funding.
The other primary need of the soybean industry is to maintain a healthy market. Limited market promotion by the American Soybean Association and the soybean industry has provided the good markets soybeans enjoy today. These must be maintained and expanded.
The financial support this requires can be provided through a Georgia Soybean Commission and similar commissions in other states. Existing commissions of other states are now largely supporting this market development. More financial help is needed.
There are presently a number of Agricultural Commodity Commissions operating in Georgia. Soybean producers will now have an opportunity to vote on whether or not they desire to establish a soybean commission. This proposed soybean commission has the objectives of supporting expanded research, education, and market promotion. A I/ 2<t per bushel checkoff is proposed.
The voting period for the proposed soybean marketing order ends August 13. All soybean producers are urged to express their opinion in this upcoming referendum.
you know that hogs get arthritis? A great deal of practical work
with herds and flocks on the Animal Husbandry farm at the University of Georgia is also included as is participation in the Block & Bridle Club, which is the organization on campus for animal science students.
Also, there is an opportunity to represent the University and the department as a member of the livestock judging team which participates in national and international contests all over the United States.
Best of all, this training and experience qualifies students for a wide variety of jobs which range from actual production on one's own farm through v farm and feedlot management to positions with breed associations, feed companies, drug companies and meat packing firms to name a few.
Positions in sales, advertising, journalism, processing and management are available, and we do not have enough students to meet the demand.
Certainly Animal Husbandry offers a chance for an active, productive and interesting career where the limit of financial reward depends only on the student's ability and ambition.
Georgia Student
Branch Selected
For the 12th time in 16 years the Georgia Student Branch of the American Society of Agricultural Engineers has been selected as the best student branch in the nation.
Competition for the honor is based upon curricular and extracurricular activities by members of the organization.
In the 16-year period since 1956, the Georgia Student Branch has won top honors a dozen times and finished second twice. Only in 1960 and 1966 did the Georgia Branch fail to place in the top two spots.
New Pecan Variety
A new pecan variety, named Cheyenne, has been released by USDA.
This variety is the result of 10 or more years of research to develop a variety superior to those now grown in characteristics important to Southern farmers, processors and consumers. The development of new varieties is part of a continuing cooperative effort by USDA's Agricultural Research Service and state agricultural experiment stations.
Cheyenne resembles Clark in form, branching and leaf. Nut maturity in autumn is about midseason for commonly grown varieties, according to Southern Extension horticulturists.
The new variety is a heavy bearer of excellent pecans for shelling. Nuts are moderately blocky in form with blunt rounded ends and are of medium size with 55 to 60 nuts required to the pound.
Budwood of this new pecan variety is not yet commercially available to pecan growers.
