Alien Ecker
New Devices
For Bug Control
Restrictions on the use of chemicals such as DDT that have residual environmental effects are causing serious problems in insect control. Inadequate methods to control pine reproduction weevils and pecan weevils will have a significant effect on Georgia Agriculture. Also, boll weevils continue to be a problem to farmers throughout the Southeast.
In the Electronics Division of the Engineering Experiment Station at Georgia Tech, Mr. W. E. Sears, III, is
leading an investigation of alternatives to insecticides for killing insects that have an economic impact on the Georgia farmer. Currently, microwave radia-
tion shows promise for destroying insects in the larva or pupa states and for preventing development into mature insects.
The heating property of this energy has been well understood for many years and is applied in microwave ovens for consumer and industrial uses. With properly

designed equipment, this same type of energy can be controlled and focused without the use of enclosed metal containers as are found in microwave ovens.
The effects of both the intense heat and high electric fields on the larva, pupa, and mature stages are being investigated. Insects may be more or less vulnerable during different states in their life cycle.
It appears that microwave radiation may be very effective during the winter when many insects remain dormant in the ground or in trash above the ground. Instantaneous destruction may not be necessary if the radiation brings the insect out of its dormant state during winter or prevents the forming of a mature insect.
Our experiments indicate that pine reproduction weevils, pecan weevils, and boll weevils can be killed in the larva and pupa states with practical levels of microwave radiation; higher levels are required to kill the mature insects instantaneously. If the insect larvae are in materials such as wet earth, pecan hulls, or cotton squares that absorb microwave energy, the larvae are killed more quickly.
Although very encouraging, our results are preliminary and more extensive tests are required. Also, a thorough study must be made to determine if microwave radiation equipment to control insects can be made economically justifiable and practical for use by farmers.
Fishing, Hunting
Facilities Wanted
For New Map
Spec/a/ Horse Edition
In this week's FARMERS AND CONSUMERS MARKET BULLETIN, on page 7, there is a calendar of horse shows and sales planned throughout Georgia for July, August and September. The above horse photograph was made by Georgia horse photographer Lyle Hart and won first place in a national contest of over 2300 contestants. The horse, an Arabian gelding, is owned by Miss Nancy Goodwin of Atlanta.
If you have hunting or fishing facilities on your property, there are many people, in Georgia and tourists, that would be interested in knowing about it.
Because of this interest, Dr. Bill Morehead of Carrollton, Contemporary Living SOUTH, a monthly newspaper, the Georgia Press Association and several state agencies are working to secure the location of all hunting and fishing facilities in Georgia. This information will then be made available through CLS, Welcome Stations and other media in map form.
The information sought is location, size of pond or field, hourly or daily charge, whether or not reservations are needed and the name and telephone number of the land owner.
"It is hoped" Dr. Morehead said, "that the publication of such maps will cut down on trespassing as well as enhance the income of farmers and other land owners who wish to open their ponds and fields to hunters and fishermen."
If you wish to be included on the maps, send your information to the BULLETIN office, Room 227, Department of Agriculture, Agriculture Building, Capitol Square, Atlanta 30334.

Meat Inspection
Commissioner of Agriculture Tommy Irvin has announced the appointment of Dr. Henry G. Woodard of Stone Mountain as Director of Meat Inspection for the Georgia Department of Agriculture.
In this capacity, Dr. Woodard will supervise the meat inspection program in more than 200 processing plants in Georgia.
The appointment was made possible through the employee interchange program with tjie U. S. Department of Agriculture as he has previously been associated with the meat inspection program as Federal State Cooperative officer.
Dr. Woodard was in private veterinary practice in Tennessee prior to his association with the federal meat inspection program.
He is a graduate of the University of Georgia School of Veterinary medicine where he was a member of various honorary and scholastic societies.
Woodard makes his home in Stone Mountain with his wife and four children.
For Outdoor Cooking
Summer's here with lots of great weather for backyard barbecues. It's time

Dear Editor:
Several months ago in the "What Is" column you gave instructions on growing avocado trees from seed. After weeks of tender loving care, I still just have a seed. What am I doing wrong?
Eugenia Lawhorn Douglasville, Georgia 30134
(Editor's note: Germination of an avocado seed can take from 2 to 4 weeks. The container needs to be on a warm sunny window sill and the water level should be replenished as needed. May we suggest that you write the Florida Cooperative Extension Service, University of Florida, Gainesville, for their circular 340 on growing avocado trees which will give you more detailed instruction. )

Agricultural Calendar
Nearly everyone who has ever run barefoot as a child has a stinging acquaintance with the common stinging nettle. Common along roadsides and in waste places, this plant causes a painful smarting followed by a red rash when contacted by a bare ankle. And yet, this detested weed is one of the finest and most nutritious foods in the whole plant kingdom.
Unlike many health foods, nettle greens are really good as well as being good, for you. In addition to their good taste, they are rich in vitamins A and C, amazingly high in protein, filled with chlorophyll, and probably exceedingly rich in many of the essential trace elements.
Although America has some native nettles that are edible, the common nettle, Urtica dioica, was originally a European plant. It was early introduced into this country, quickly became naturalized, and is now found wherever conditions are suitable for its growth.
It is usually a small plant, one to two feet high, but in-rich stream valleys it may reach a height of six to eight feet. The leaves are opposite, heart-shaped, finely toothed on the margins, and tapering to points. The small green flowers are borne an branched clusters that spring from the axils of the leaves.
The whole plant is downy and also covered with stiff stinging hairs. Each sting is really an exceedingly sharp, hollow spine, and arises from a slightly swollen base. This swelling contains the venom that is released through the hollow spine whenever the plant is brushed. The venom is partly formic acid, which accounts for its sharp sting, for it is closely related to the sting of a bee.
Only the tender tops of young, first-growth nettles before they begin to bloom are used for eating. These are cooked much as other young greens. Nettles are reputed to be useful in treating such diverse diseases as bronchitis, asthma, gout, consumption, diabetes, ague, and even "the stings and bites of venomous creatures and mad dogs," and as an antidote for poisoning by hemlock, henbane, and nightshade.
Because of its high vitamin C content, it actually will cure scurvy and was used for this purpose by herbalists hundreds of years before the term "vitamin" was coined. Its high vitamin A content will help brighten the eyes, improve night vision, and
Aids Mechanization
The term "engineer" has over the years stood for many things to many people. Originally, engineers were military men who designed, constructed, and employed structures and machines of war.
Upon separation from the army,
these men began to engage them-
selves in public works of a non-
military nature and the civil
engineering profession emerged.
With the advent of hydraulic power
and the machine age, those engineers
specializing in this activity became
known as mechanical engineers.
Before long electricity came into
its place of service to mankind and
electrical
engineering was
recognized. Similarly, other groups
were formed, each based upon their
identity of interest and specialized
training which enabled them to
perform special services for an in-
dustry or an area of science.
Those electing to provide
engineering services for the
agricultural sciences and industries
make up that part of the engineering
profession known as agricultural
engineering.
Georgia's Agricultural
Engineering program rates high
nationally. It claims the third largest
enrollment of its kind and is housed in
the largest and best equipped
physical facility for agricultural
engineering instruction in the United
States.
The selection of courses which
comprise the curriculum and the
content of individual courses is done
so as to provide meaningful in-
struction of highest quality and to
earn full accreditation by the
engineers council for professional
development. The department is
proud of its program leading to the
fully accredited BSAE, Bachelor of
Science in Agricultural Engineering,
degree and of its reputation as one of
the nation's leaders in the profession
of agricultural engineering.
In the past 25 years, and
significantly in the past 10 years, the
American agricultural picture has
moved toward total mechanization.
Large acreages, large machines, and
minimum labor requirements are
now accepted. The agricultural
engineer participates, in fact leads, in
the march toward full mechanization.
A plan for cooperative training is
available to BSAE students. The CO-
OP Student is assigned alternate
working and academic quarters.
The department also offers a new
program in agri-business-
mechanization. This new effort to
serve the needs of industry provides
about equal amounts of instruction in
agricultural science, business and
agricultural mechanization. Students
in this program receive the BS in
Agriculture degree with a major in
agricultural mechanization
technology.
add gloss to the hair, if their loss is caused by lack of vitamin A.
Nettles have long been used in home remedies and herbal medicines to treat mankind's ills. A lively soft drink can be made of nettles that is reputed to cure the aches and pains of the aged, but it makes a pleasant beverage of all ages.
Even the sting of the nettle has been thought to be beneficial. Urtication, stinging the flesh with nettles, was an old herbalists' remedy for chronic rheumatism. In herbal literature this herb, cooked, is recommended as being "very efficacious in reducing corpulency."
Straight Line
How do you make sassafras tea? Mrs. C.S.G., Charing
To make tea, boil the roots in water as you would boil tea leaves.
***
How can I stop snails from getting all over my dog's food bowl every night? This is getting to be a problem.
L.S., Rome
Our Entomology division advises placing the bowl in a larger container and pouring beer or salt in the container at night. Beer kills snails and should soon eliminate your problem.
***
Can you tell me if the poke salad leaves growing near a septic tank line or drain would be harmful or distasteful to cook and eat as turnip greens?
Mrs. R.L.S., Doraville
Our poke salad man says the leaves will not harm you nor will they be distasteful.
***
Please tell me what causes my chickens to peck feathers from one another. They look like rumpless chickens.
Mrs. B.M.M., Trite
This is a form of cannibalism. Your chickens should be debeaked and also fed oyster shells to curb this.
***
When are blueberries planted? When are cuttings from raspberries taken and when replanted?
W.J.P., Ball Ground
Blueberries are planted in the winter. Take cuttings from raspberries in the summer and replant them in the winter.
*** Please tell me what the enclosed weed is and what I can use to control it. It is all over my lawn.
0. S., Dawson
Your sample was too small to identify. Also, we need to know what type of grass you have in your lawn before we can advise a control measure.
Buying Birds
(Continued from page 1) and roasting.
The key to a successful barbecue is starting with a solid bed of glowing coals - without flames. Light the fire at least 30 minutes ahead of time so it can burn down to ash-gray coals before you start cooking.
When the fire is ready, brush poultry with melted butter, margarine or your favorite barbecue sauce. The center of the rack is hotter than the outside, so place the smaller pieces on the outside.
Cooking time ranges from one to one and one-half hours depending on the size and thickness of the pieces. Turn and baste occasionally to assure even cooking.
When cooking on a rotisserie, a rule of thumb is to allow about 20 to 30 minutes per pound for doneness. To test for doneness, protect your fingers with a paper towel and grasp the end of the drumstick. When the leg moves easily, the bird is done.

Important Notice
To Soybean Growers
The ACC for Soybeans Commission, following a public hearing ,held July 8,1971, recommended that a 30 day referendum period be established during which time ballots will be mailed or furnished to every soybean producer in Georgia giving him an opportunity to vote for or against the proposed marketing order and commodity commission for soybeans.
The referendum will be from July 15 through August 13, 1971. Every soybean producer is urged to vote in this important referendum.
PECANS GROWING During the seven-year period 1963 through 1969, pecan production in Georgia increased 41 percent.
