New In Georgia
This week in Georgia, the Department of Agriculture is launching a Georgia agriculture promotion campaign which is designed to increase demand for the state's farm products.
In addition, one of the long range aims of the program is to increase local processing of Georgia's agricultural products.
To launch this campaign, the above little "g" with a green leaf at
the top has been adopted as a symbol to be used to designate a Georgia product. This little "g" will stand for Georgia, for growth, and for green. We think it can become the
biggest little letter in the alphabet. I have been surprised to find as I
travel throughout Georgia and in other states that many people are not aware of the various products produced in our state even when in fact we lead the nation in the production of several of these products.
It is hoped that this symbol will serve to educate people about Georgia's diversified and abundant agriculture and to promote further use of these products.
In addition, we hope to reverse the trend of producing quality raw products in Georgia only to have them shipped out of state for processing and returned here for consumption. Much of this processing could and should be done in Georgia.
We will use this symbol in every way possible to promote Georgia products with plans for it to evolve into a symbol that processors may eventually use on labels or containers of raw and processed agricultural products originating in Georgia.
If you have any ideas or comments concerning this program, I would appreciate hearing from you. Lets make this little "g" with the agricultural leaf the biggest letter in the nation.
Miss Holtzclaw looks over the reports on
food items that have been checked for label correctness. The label on all Georgia processed foods must state the exact contents and all ad-
ditives.
Miss Sheila Holtzclaw, Home Economist for the Georgia Department of Agriculture looks over foods processed in Georgia that are checked regularly in the department laboratories.

Horse Edition
ine July 7
The quarterly Horse Show and Sale Edition of the BULLETIN will be published July 14. Deadline for notices to appear in this issue is July 7.
For best results, notices should be listed separately and should include the following items in this order: (1) date, (2) time, (3) name of event, (4) very brief description of activities, (5) sanctioning organization' or association, if desired, (6) location, (7) name, phone and address of person who can give additional information.
Ga. Egg Producers
To Meet In Macon
The tenth annual meeting of the Georgia Egg Association will be held July 7 and 8 at the Dempsey Motor Hotel in Macon.
Due to distressed prices received for shelled eggs, several topics pertaining to this problem, as well as other changes in the industry, will be discussed.
New federal laws and regulations, production controls, new egg products and pollution problems will receive attention. All egg producers are encouraged to attend.
Peaches Decrease
Commissioner of Agriculture Tommy Irvin has announced that this year's Georgia peach crop will be smaller than last year's crop due to cool weather in May and hail damage in several areas.
Irvin said this year's crop is now forecast at 140 million pounds or 20 million pounds below the 1970 production figure.
The current harvest activity in south and central Georgia is a week to 10 days late but seems to be going well, the Commissioner said, adding that some harvest of early varieties should get underway in north Georgia next week.

What
Agricultural
Calendar
, Costmary or chrysanthemum balsamita is a hardy perenial herb which spreads from un derground parts, forming clumps. The stems from these clumps are from three to four feet high. The foilage is quite thick with leaves having a sweet, minty, lemony fragrance.
Costmary was introduced in Europe by Greek physicians who searched for plants they felt possessed curative powers. It was called by several other names such as "sweet Mary" or sweet tongue."
The name "Bible leaf" comes from the use of its broad, long leaves by the early colonists as bookmarks in their Bibles. It was used by the English to flavor beer and ale and called "alecost".
Costmary was one of the sweet herbs strewn on floors and used for scenting the washing water at meals during the medieval times.
It is also a favorite herb in teas. Fresh leaves may be used to flavor cakes, game, meats, and poultry. As the flavor is rather strong, one must exercise caution in its use.
This herb is a native to western Asia but will grow in all temperate zones. It was planted by the English in their herb gardens and brought to America by the colonists. It is seen growing wild on the edges of old orchards or near old farms in the eastern and mid-western parts of the United States.____________
Regaining Lost
Cotton Markets
A good opportunity to regain lost markets is opening up for cotton growers in the United States, according to Alpha A. Fowler, Jr., Georgia Farm Program Official, provided an adequate supply of cotton can be grown and harvested to meet the demand.
The opportunity is both this year and long-range. If producers can bring supplies into reasonable balance with demand, chances are good not only for keeping present world markets for out cotton, but also for regaining markets that have been lost in recent years to competition.
The challenge to cotton growers is right now -- this growing season. With world cotton supplies tight and much of the potential U.S. cotton production hampered by bad weather, every effort is needed to get yields up as high as possible.

Our Veterinary division advises that goats keep grass and underbrush down, thus preventing snakes from having a hiding place. Snakes do not stay in clean areas.
