Soil Stewardship
Everyone's Duty
"The world and they that dwell therein," is the theme of Soil Stewardship Week May 16-23. I think that this is particularly appropriate in view of the damage that we have perpetrated on the universe.
In Genesis it says, "And God saw everything that He had made, and behold it was very good." I wonder how it looks to Him today?
Man was created in God's image and granted dominion over the rest of
creation. To my way of thinking that entailed a continuing responsibility for the wise stewardship of God's gifts - the soil, water, and as the bible says, "The fish of the sea, the fowl of the air, and every living thing that moveth upon the earth." I'm sorry to say that man has not done too good a job of stewardship. Almost the reverse has happened. We have polluted our lakes and rivers, poisoned the atmosphere, and eroded the countryside. However, many things are happening on the environmental front
(Our guest columnist this week is Jim L. Gillis, Jr., Chairman, State Soil and Water Conservation Committee, Soperton, 30457.)
that I consider as emerging signs of hope.
There is a spreading spirit of stewardship abroad in the State, conservation goals are being established and schools are beginning to integrate environmental education into the curricula. There is a wider use of land capability information based on soil surveys, and urban interests are beginning to realize that protection of the environment is their responsibility, not somebody else's.
Of particular interest to me, as Chairman of the State Conservation Committee, is the fact that Georgia's 27 Soil Conservation Districts, which blanket the State, are broadening their programs to include a variety of environmental benefits; this in addition to the traditional work of soil and water conservation.
I think that we may have started a course of action which will establish a better relationship between "the earth, the fulness thereof; the world, and they that dwell therein,".and I hope that Soil Stewardship Week will add impetus to this growing recognition of our responsibility to protect and wisely use the myriad of related elements making up our environment.
This calls for the total involvement of every Georgia citizen. As State Conservation Committee chairman I urge the people of Georgia to cooperate in every way possible in this worthy movement which means so much to everyone.

Wood Market
There is a relatively new and fast growing market for wood products. It's mobile homes. Georgia Extension Service foresters point out that estimated production of mobile homes is now between 400,000 and 500,000 units. By 1980, mobile home production may be as high as 700,000 units. That's going to take a lot of wood.

Stored-Products Studied At Savannah Laboratory

People everywhere need and desire the proper diet of nutritious and good quality food. In Savannah, Georgia, at 3401 Edwin Avenue is located the USDA's Stored-Product Insects Research and Development Laboratory, the world's

largest institute devoted exclusively to research on the control of stored-product

insect pests.

The presence of insects Or their

damage rapidly lowers the quality of food, feed, seed, and fibrous materials.
The Stored-Product Insects Research and Development Laboratory is a multimillion dollar research complex. Ten buildings
provide approximately 65,000 square feet of research space including a new $800,000 Administration-Laboratory Building which was completed and dedicated last year.
Twenty-eight entomologists, physicists, and chemists supported by 40 technicians and administrative personnel under the direction of Dr. Robert Davis make up the permanent staff.
During the summer months the staff is increased to approximately 90 with the employment of local high school, college, and graduate school students.
At times during the year the laboratory is also a laboratory away from home for visiting scientists. Scientists from the faculties of major

Each year several hundred scientists and industrial representatives from throughout the United States and many foreign countries visit Savannah to consult with the research scientists.

Questions and Answers on ASCS Loan Programs

The Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation Service has been making loans to farmers for erecting storage structures or purchasing drying equipment since 1949. The requirements and restrictions for making these loans has varied during different periods of time.
The purpose of these questions and answers is to acquaint you with the present program and how it may be helpful to the farmers in Georgia in providing needed storage and drying equipment.
WHAT TYPE LOANS ARE
AVAILABLE?
For erection of storage structure, either bins or building that will safely

store grains or similar commodities.

The equipment needed to handle or

condition the commodity can be

added in the cost of the structure.

Equipment may be defined as

perforated floors, dryer units,

transition assemblies, ladders,

augers, and other equipment.

Drying equipment. Dryers could be used for peanuts, (including

wagons), corn or soybeans. Dryers

may be a separate unit or included with the loan for the storage structure.

WHAT

SECURITY

IS

REQUIRED?
Where the loan is less than $10,000

and there are not lienholders on the

property on which the structure or equipment will be located, the producer will execute a promissory note and chattel mortgage, and a Financing Statement.
If the loan is $10,000 or more a mortgage on the property and a portion of the real estate where the structure is situated will be required.
WHAT IS THE PERIOD OF
LOAN?

Dear Editor:

I saw in the MARKET BULLETIN where someone asked how to remove the hard shell or hull off seeds.

Please tell your readers to remove the screen from a small hammer mill, run the seed through at low speed. If they are dampened a little, it will prevent the kernels from cracking somewhat. Then put the whole works in a tub of water. The kernels will sink to the bottom while the chaff or hulls will float and can be easily removed.

Place a cloth on a screen, spread kernels on cloth out in sun. Be sure they are perfectly dry before storing.

The sycamore tree (Platanus occidentalis L.) is a large timber species with probably the greatest diameter of any eastern tree. It is 80 to 100 feet high and 3 to 8 feet in diameter with a continuous tapering trunk breaking up near the ground into several large limbs.
The leaves alternate with blades 4 to 7 inches in diameter. They are smooth above but hairy along the veins below; base of the leaf stem is hollow enclosing next years bud. The flowers are borne in globose heads on the tree. The globose head is about one inch in diameter; the small unit fruits ("seeds"), each with a circle of hair at the base, become detached at maturity or during the winter and following spring.
The bark which is mottled creamy white and <brown is the most striking feature of the tree. The creamy white is where the bark peels off. The base of the old trees is almost entirely brown and flaky.
The sycamore tree is found on stream-bank and bottom-land trees scattered in mixture with other hardwoods. In appearance, this is perhaps the most distinctive of eastern hardwoods with its massive mottled trunk and "button balls" swinging high in the air.
The Illinois French made dugout canoes of sycamore. The small fruits are eaten by a few birds; deer browse the twigs, and muskrats are known to chew the bark. The wood is also used for such items as butcher's blocks.
Livestock Producers Complain Of Warts
Some Georgia livestock producers have been bothered by warts in cattle this spring.
These warts are non-malignant tumors and are believed to be caused by a virus. The virus gains entrance to a new animal through skin abrasions coming in direct contact with infected animals.
There is also some evidence that warts may be transmitted indirectly from an animal by means of halters, nose leads and leashes -- and perhaps even by external parasites such as flies.
Cattle of all ages are affected. However, the incidence is generally higher among calves and yearlings.
Warts.usually go away. But there are many treatments. Warts on a cow's udder, for example, may respond to daily applications of castor oil or sweet oil. Glacial acetic acid or iodine has given beneficial results if applied before the warts become excessively large.
Perhaps the most reliable way of removing warts is the administration of a wart vaccine. This vaccine is helpful. It is not, however, 100 percent effective. Repeated doses must be injected.

ASCS Programs Stored Products

(Continued from page 1)
deferred for a short time or extended for a year at a time due to certain conditions or circumstances.
WHAT IS THE RATE OF IN-
TEREST?
Fifty cents per $100 or fraction thereof for each calendar month or fraction. This interest is always calculated on the outstanding balance. (Equal to 6 percent)
HOW MUCH MAY I BORROW?
Eighty-five percent of the net cost subject to maximum outstanding balance of $35,000.
WHAT ARE THE EXCLUSIONS?
Oxygen-free or silo-type structures designed primarily for "wet" storage.
WHO APPROVES THE LOANS?
County ASC Committees for loans less than $5,000, and the State ASC Committee for loans of $5,000 or over.
WHERE MAY I OBTAIN THE
LOAN?
County ASCS Office where farm records are maintained.
WHO IS AN ELIGIBLE
BORROWER?
Any person who as landowner, landlord, tenant or sharecropper produces one or more of the eligible commodities on the farm(s) to which the loan application relates.
Eligible commodities are corn, oats, barley, grain sorghum, wheat, rye, soybeans and peanuts. Corn, grain sorghum and wheat must be produced on a farm participating in set-aside program.
WHERE CAN I GET AD-
DITIONAL INFORMATION?
Contact your local county ASCS office.
Growing Apples
Georgia apple growers can learn the latest control measures for diseases and insects attacking apples through a revised bulletin entitled, "Georgia Apple Disease and Insect Control Guide".
Prepared by University of Georgia plant pathologists and entomologists, the bulletin tells about control of such insects as apple aphids, woolly apple aphid, codling moth, leaf rollers and others, as well as about control of such diseases as fire blight, scab, leaf spot, cedar apple rust, powdery mildew and crown gall.
The backyard orchardist can also use this guide by changing the acreage rates to smaller doses of the recommended pesticide. The easy-tofollow guide is free at your county Extension office.

by the farmer until they are completely utilized by the homemaker.
The laboratory has no responsibility for extension, regulation, enforcement, or the application of
control methods. Research and development en-
deavors are not limited to Savannah, Ga., alone. Scientists on occasions
conduct research in a number of locations throughout the United States and in several countries
overseas. Proper implementation of new
and better methods of insect control requires close cooperation with farmers, food processors, grain elevator operators, wholesale and retail warehousemen, packers, shippers, and pesticide manufac-
turers. Since its beginning in the late
1940's the laboratory has grown in size, personnel, and areas of responsibility. Today, teams of scientists work in the eight research areas of biological control, biophysical control, physical control, chemical control, mothproofing, insect-resistant packaging, natural product chemistry, and pesticide
residue analysis. Continued growth is expected
with man's increasing concern for the quality of his environment. Possible removal of the organochlorides, such as DOT, for use as pesticides, has challenged the laboratory's program to find new pest control methods.
The biological, physical, biophysical, and radiation control sections are engaged in searching for new nonchemical methods of controlling stored-product insects.
Areas under investigation include the use of light, infrared, microwave, and gamma radiation; carbon dioxide and nitrogen gasses; and parasites and predators. The laboratory possesses many unique facilities and necessary instrumentation for conducting these types of research.
The only operational bulk grainpackaged commodity cobalt 60 irradiator in the world is located at the laboratory. The research teams of chemical control, mothproofing, insect-resistant packaging, and pesticide residue analysis are actively screening, testing, and evaluating chemical compounds for use in controlling stored-product insects and for their potential in decreasing possible environmental
pollution. The Stored-Product Insects
Research and Development Laboratory is open to the public Monday through Friday between the hours of 8 a.m. and 4:30 p.m.

I mailed you a spider I killed in my house. Can you tell me if it is poison, will it bite, and what I can do to get rid of them?
W.M.B., Abbeville

Our Entomology division advised that your spider -- that was packaged so nicely in a CLEAR plastic box -- is known as the Brown Wolf Spider and is not harmful. We have mailed you a pamphlet on control of these creatures which should answer all of your questions.
***
I recently planted okra and applied a light application of fertilizer. Should a side application be used and when?
J.H.A., Savannah

The okra man says yes. Once when the plants are about six inches high and another when the plants begin bearing heavily. We mailed you a gardening pamphlet which should help some. * * *
Last summer we had lizards to bed around our patio and steps. Is there any remedy for them? We also had bees to get into our roof above our air conditioner. Will they come back and what can be done to control them?
Mrs. C. S., Fairmount

Dieldrin granules or dust will cure the lizard problem. It is possible the bees will return. If they do, a light application of Sevin should be applied for control.
