State Legislators
Need Your Help
This week we welcomed to' Atlanta and the Capitol the 132nd session of the Georgia General Assembly.
Each session of the State Legislature abounds with decisions which ultimately effects each and every citizen of Georgia and the 1971 session is no exception.
Therefore, every Georgian should take an interest in his State Legislature - to try to be aware of the
r business it will | take up, the bills i and resolutions it i will hear.
It is only then, through awareness, that , your representative can do his [ work most ef1 fectively. Only through your interest in the affairs of state can your state senators and representatives know your feelings and represent you effectively. I know from many years in the State Legislature myself, that it is frustrating to try to represent your people properly when you are not aware of their feelings. It is beneficial to you and your representative to let him know by calling or writing what you think about certain issues. Besides the usual business of reapportionment, passing new bills and resolutions, and amendments, the legislature is also considering several bills of particular interest and importance to both the farmer and consumer. One of these is a bill to amend the Georgia Food Act so as to define the term Food Sales Establishment. If passed, this bill will require all retail food outlets to obtain a license, thus strengthening the Georgia Food Act. A bill of particular interest to both farmers and consumers will prohibit the feeding of garbage to certain animals.
The last several cases of cholera that have occurred in Georgia have been traced directly to the feeding of garbage to swine. I feel that this is a necessary step to be taken in order for Georgia to become a cholera-free state.
Two measures of prime importance to all Georgians are the two bills to amend the Georgia Meat Inspection Act.
The first bill would allow custom slaughtering of meat animals by people who produce meat for their own use. This applies to the slaughtering by any person of animals of his own raising to be used exclusively by him and members of his household, guests, and employees.
The second bill would provide inspection of meat and meat products by the Department of Agriculture in retail and food service establishments, thus allowing meat to be inspected at the retail level. Half the

National Meeting
For Peach Growers
To Be Held Here
Between 700 and 1,000 peach growers, representing about 35 peachgrowing states in the U.S., will meet in Atlanta next month for the 1971 convention of the National Peach Council.
The meeting is scheduled for February 21-24 at the SheratonBiltmore Hotel. State meetings of the Georgia and South Carolina Peach Councils will be held in conjunction with the national event.
A Georgian, R.L. (Bob) Dickey of 5043 Wellington Drive, Macon, is slated to move up to president of the national organization during the meeting here. He is currently serving as first vice president.
C. D. Spivey, horticulturist with the University of Georgia Extension Service, is general chairman of the upcoming convention, and W. C. Carter, executive secretary of the Agricultural Commodity Commission for Peaches, is vice chairman.
Meat & Fish
ThawingTime
Most frozen meats and fish may be cooked either with or without previous thawing. But extra cooking time must be allowed for meats not thawed first - just how much will depend on the size and shape of the cut.
Large frozen roasts may take as much as 11/ 2 times as long to cook as unfrozen cuts of the same weight and shape. Small roasts and thin cuts, such as steaks and chops, require less time.
Frozen fish, fillets, and steaks may be cooked as if they were in the unfrozen form if additional cooking time is allowed. When fish are to be breaded and fried, or stuffed, it is more convenient to thaw them first to make handling easier.
Thaw frozen meats and fish in the refrigerator in their original wrappings.
For best quality, cook thawed meat and fish immediately.

Curtains, draperies, and bedspreads made of fiberglass should be hand-washed unless the labels suggest otherwise. Be sure to launder all fiberglass articles separately.
A good place to wash bulky items is in the bathtub. A soak in sudsy water helps to remove soil. After laundering fiberglass items, be sure to scrub the tub thoroughly to remove any traces of fiberglass residue.

Brucellosis Lab Aids

Farmer And Consumer

The brucellosis laboratory of the Georgia Department of Agriculture is a joint state-federal program designed to help the farmer have healthier animal crops, thus providing the consumer with more and better meats.

In addition "to the 350 thousand samples tested for brucellosis in

Mr. Bill Carmon, head of the state brucellosis lab, tests blood samples for salmonella, a disease costly to both poultry and beef producers.

Georgia each year, the laboratory also does tests for various other animal diseases such as leptospirosis, salmonella, and serology - the testing of serum.
About 1,000 cultures of feed sample components are tested each year for salmonella, a disease which causes both poultry and beef to be an added expense to the farmer.
In addition, the brucellosis lab is responsible for all the paperwork involved in sending supplies to veterinarians and livestock inspectors over the state.
Referral samples for anaplasmosis, which causes animals to go off their feed and become extremely weak, and screwworm larvae are sent to the U.S.D.A. Animal Health Laboratory, Beltsville, Maryland, for further testing. Various viral disease samples are referred to the lab in Tifton.
The lab tests all larvae found in animal wounds for possible screwworm infestations. Due to this constant checking, there have been no screwworm larvae found in Georgia

since 1962. Samples to be tested are taken in
two parts. The first is the screening for possible diseases of all animals sold through sale barns for either replacement on farms or slaughter. The second part is the testing of infected herds and the removal of infected animals. When an infected

I have two blackgum trees I would like to kill. They are approximately 2 I/ 2 feet in diameter. Five months ago I skinned all the bark off the trunks to about 4 feet high. Worms have gotten into them also but the bark is still green. I have burned old truck tires at the trunks also. I can't saw them down because they are too close to my pecan trees and barn. Can you help me with this problem?

We Get Letters

Dear Editor:
Is there anything that will remove clear varnish from vinyl floors without harmful effects. If there is, I would like to know what it is. I have tried numerous suggestions but to no avail.
Miss L.J. Soperton
Dear Editor:
I am interested in trying some raw sugar, but have been unable to locate any. Every grocer, it seems, carries only refined sugar; and I understand that even "brown" sugar is actually just refined sugar colored brown.
Can you please tell me where I might purchase raw sugar? Also, whether there is a place in the Decatur area where organically-grown fresh fruits and vegetables are sold?
Mrs. Leo Salter 448 Eastland Drive Decatur, Georgia 30030

THE MARKET BULLETIN

Time To Plant Roses In Georgia

For Spring Enjoyment And Beauty

Spreading dogbane Apocynum and rosaemifolium, also called honey-bloom and wild ipecac, is a member of the Apocynaceae Family. This Family includes several old garden favorites like the periwinkle and oleander . . . also, over 1100 species of herbs, shrubs, vines or trees, scattered all over the world but are largely tropical.
The flowers, though small and inconspicuous, are very beautiful if closely examined. They are small bell-shaped pink that are in loose flat clusters. The deep pink veining suggests nectar -- which probably gives rise to its English title, dogbane, supposedly poisonous to dogs when they eat it. There are two long slender seedpods resulting from a single blossom - often appearing while the plant is still in flower.
Writers state that from the stems a thread similar to hemp can be woven into cloth and from the pods, cotton, from the blossoms, sugar. In Webster's Third New International Dic tionary the dogbanes are referred to as Indian hemp - probably because of this tough fibered stem, formerly used in cordage.
This spring, they can be very attractive and useful in borders because they are so easily cultivated preferring open, sandy soil, and will stand considerable drought. They are propagated by division of the roots in spring or fall.
State Legislators
(Continued from page 1)
expense of this program will be paid by the federal government.
In addition to these, a new feed law which would completely revise the state feed law is being considered.
Let me urge each of you to become familiar with the business of this General Assembly. Now is the time to let your representatives know your views and opinions on the measures which are of particular interest to you. It is only through awareness of your feelings that your representatives can best act in your interest.________________
SHOE FIT?
Speaking of ill-fitting shoes, Mark Twain said, "They sure take your mind off your troubles." If the shoe fits wear it: if the shoe doesn't fit, by all means don't wear it, advise Extension clothing specialists. They say ill-fitting shoes can bring on foot problems that bring on foot problems that even ill-fitting shoes can't make you forget._______________
PIE ANYTIME
One way to have a pecan pie ready to serve anytime is to bake a supply and freeze them. Then all you have to do is take one out of the freezer, heat it and serve it.

No other plant in Georgia has such a distinguished past as tfie rose. History tells us that roses have ministered to man's hunger for beauty for more than 4,000 years. In fact, man's migration can be traced with some degree of accuracy through the rose.

Emigrating tribes and adventuring pioneers carried a root or a carefully guarded "slip" of the rose along with their house-hold belongings as they spread throughout the world.
The rose was probably developed from the simple five petaled flower of by gone ages. A few of today's varieties have occurred naturally. Most, however, are the result of selective breeding by specialists and rosarians.
Beginners and "old pros" can profit from the experiences of others in selecting varieties. The Horticulture Department of the Georgia Experiment Station, Experiment, Georgia, has a list of varieties found outstanding in tests at the station, available upon request.
PICK A SUNNY SPOT
Many rose failures can be linked directly to poor site location. Pick a site that will give your plants sufficient sunlight, good soil, and a good air flow.
Roses require a minimum of six hours of sunlight a day. If possible, the plants should get morning sun as this will dry the dew (a real trouble maker) and cause less trouble with leaf diseases. An ideal location is one that receives both morning and afternoon sun.
The soil should be well drained, moderately fertile, contain a high humus or organic matter content, and retain sufficient moisture for plant growth. Most rose growers prefer soil with 20 to 30 percent clay content.
Air space between soil particles is essential. Sandy soils generally have adequate air spaces between particles. Organic matter and/ or sand added to heavy clay soils will increase air spaces.
Roses are generally more suc-

cessful in mass plantings or beds, making it easier for more uniform watering, fertilization and control of weeds, insects, and diseases.
PREPARING THE SOIL Prepare the soil in an entire bed three weeks to a month prior to planting. Plow or spade the area thoroughly to a depth of 12 inches or more, remove any rocks or debris, and add organic matter. Peat moss, ground pine bark, leaf mold, compost, rotted sawdust or barnyard manure, all excellent forms of organic matter, should be spread two to four inches deep over the entire bed and worked in thoroughly. Rake the bed, leaving a slight slope to insure runoff of excess rainfall. A soil test, used to determine
fertilizer and lime needs, will help avoid unnecessary labor, extra fertilizer costs and the risk of losing your plants or having poor plants.
BUY QUALITY PLANTS Although price is not always an index of quality, plants of better quality generally cost a little more. Buy from a reputable source - a licensed garden center or nursery, an established rose company or a wellknown mail order house. Top quality plants will have several fleshy, firm roots with masses of fine roots. Container-grown plants have a more extensive root system and may be transplanted without severe shock or a slowing down of growth. Roses should be planted from November until March, the earlier the better. This allows the plants to develop a good root system before foliage and canes begin growing. There is also the added advantage of higher quality and wider variety in selections in early season planting.

Brucellosis
(Continued from page 1)
slaughtered. Brucellosis is not a curable
disease in animals and is barely curable in humans. In the past, this disease was gotten from drinking milk. Now it is caught from working in slaughter houses and labs. Veterinarians and slaughter house personnel are the only people who were infected with this disease in the past few years.
According to Dr. David Dreesen, D.V.M., State Public Health Veterinarian, the number of persons in the U.S. infected with brucellosis a few years ago was high. In 1947, 6300 persons were infected, in 1956, 1400 persons, in 1962, 500 persons, and in 1969, 231 persons were infected with brucellosis in the United States. Only 8 persons were infected in Georgia in 1970.
Georgia is presently classified as a modified, certified brucellosis free state. As the incidence of brucellosis

Lab
decreases, Georgia is moving county by county to a certified brucellosis free state. There are now 37 brucellosis free counties in the state and 3 more up for approval. This certification will allow Georgia animals to move more freely from state to state, making them desirable as disease free animals.
Herds that are disease free have a herd certification from the brucellosis laboratory. These herds are tested each year and receive herd certification status if no diseases are found.
Any other animal is tested upon request, provided the sample to be tested is submitted by an accredited veterinarian. Goats, horses, dogs, buffalo, and wild brahmas have been tested in the lab.
The brucellosis laboratory is presently working toward the elimination and eradication of all animal diseases in Georgia.

You want those trees to die, don't you? The Forestry Commission advised that if you girdle the trees all the way around, being sure to cut through the

cambium layer at least 3/ 4 inch deep, your trees will die. It may take a year,

but theyJ will die.
