Soybeans - Ga's
Cinderella Crop
Only a few years ago soybeans didn't look too much like a "Cinderella Crop" for Georgia farmers. Times have changed and soybeans are really showing economic muscle in our state. A thirty five million dollar crop in 1970 puts soybeans almost equal to cotton in value to Georgia farmers.
Soybeans have a market in Georgia. The processing industry in state can handle approximately 40 million bushels, which means imports
of 28 million bushels. The (poultry and turkey industry in state uses soybean meal from 31 million bushels.
The March 16 intentions indicate a 34% increase in Georgia soybean acreage or 737,000 acres for 1971. This is the largest increase of any state. The farmers of Georgia could increase the acreage in a few years to supply the 40 million bushels needed in the state. This production would put soybeans second only to peanuts as a

cash crop. It is the only cash crop with unlimited expansion possibilities - a real growth enterprise.
Farmers in many counties of Georgia would be in a serious financial squeeze were it not for this crop; even bankers are beginning to show their appreciation.
As Georgia agriculture becomes more and more livestock oriented, the need for better land use increases to ease the labor squeeze as well as the cost-price squeeze. A small grain soybean system is an ideal system for using land all year without high labor costs.
Machinery can also be better utilized. Good management will give good returns. Too often we have treated soybeans like an orphan instead of a rewarding crop. Treat it well and enjoy the benefits.
Soybeans have no acreage restrictions and we want to keep it that way. Market promotion and research are the keys to keeping this crop free with expanding markets. Demand creates profitable prices. Export markets are greater for soybeans than for any other U. S. crop.
Fifty percent of the U. S. crop is exported. A few dollars and a lot of hard work by the American Soybean Association, with some assistance from government and processors, have helped create this export demand. All soybean growers need to support this effort and we will continue to have a "Cinderella Crop".

Livestock Assn., Ag Dept. Cooperate

To Protect Consumer

Commissioner of Agriculture Tommy Irvin accepts a replica of a Black Angus bull from John Robinson, Executive Vice-President of the Georgia Cattlemen's Association, Jim Vogt, Executive Secretary of the Georgia Angus Association, and Bill Terry, Southeastern Regional Manager of the American
Angus Association.

The Georgia Cattleman's Association and the Georgia Department of Agriculture have announced a cooperative effort to further protect the consumers of beef and beef products in Georgia.
Tommy Irvin, Georgia Commissioner of Agriculture, and Cattle Association Executive Vice President John Robinson, have joined forces to eliminate the uses of deceptive display lighting in retail meat markets and the unlawful use of trademark of identification of inferior beef as "Georgia Beef".
Complaints from consumers from throughout the state have been received concerning the use of pink or other colored lighting in retail and meat display areas and cases. "This practice is not only deceptive but borders on outright fraud", Robinson said, "and we intend to insure the

Swine Exemption Georgia's Wild Flowers,

Effective May 1
Since Georgia has become declared a hog cholera free state, Commissioner of Agriculture Tommy Irvin feels that an additional exception may be allowed to the statewide quarantine pertaining to the controlled movement of swine.
Farmers who offer swine for sale at livestock auction markets will be allowed to "no sale" these swine if they do not obtain the price they desire for these swine.
The "no sale" swine are to be returned to the farm of origin under automatic quarantine and isolation for a period of at least 30 days prior to them being moved into channels of trade again. This exemption will become effective on May 1, 1971.
It is hopeful that this will be advantageous to farmers whose swine are not of a grade and class that will command a fair market price.
They will be able to return these to the farm of origin and improve their quality during the 30 day period to the point that they will bring better prices.
The Georgia swine industry and all other people connected with it are to be commended for their efforts in Georgia obtaining hog cholera free status.
Know?
Don't look now, but Arkansas has just edged out Georgia as the No. 1 broiler producing state in the nation. After 19 straight years as No. 1, Georgia is now No. 2 - at least until the score is in early next year.
Still, Georgia has more chickens than any other state - when you count the number held for broilers, hatching egg production, and commercial eggs.

A Springtime Treasure

Have you ever walked through a woodsy area on a spring day and discovered pink and or white clusters of trailing arbutus, white bloodroot or pale blue hepaticas? Have you ever taken a stroll down a little-traveled road to come abruptly on a roadbank of golden dandelions? If you have, perhaps you've yearned to bring some of that natural splendor into your own yard.

Straight Line
Is running okra as good to eat as other okra?
G.A.B., Millen
According to our area horticulturist, running okra is not okra but a member of the gourd family. It is edible when the fruit is in an immature stage but is tough and full of fibers when the fruit is mature. Running okra is harvested and prepared as regular okra but is known as a novelty.

Moss is covering my fish pond. What will kill it and when is the best time to fertilize my jonquils?
Mrs. H.S.W., Moultrie
As we don't know what kind of moss you have, may we suggest that you send a small amount of the moss in a container of water to the Game & Fish Commission, 210 Washington Street, S.W., Atlanta, 30334, for identification and treatment. Fertilize your jonquils right after they bloom.

Please tell me what the enclosed bug is and how to kill it.
Mrs. M.L., Ranger
Your bug is an ant. Our Entomology division advises spraying or dusting with Chlordane, following directions. We have also mailed you a pamphlet on ant control.

A garden of wild flowers - what could be more appealing or simpler? Wander through nearby fields and woods, choose what you like, transplant, and there you have it.
Unhappily, it is not all that easy. In fact, it's extremely difficult to accomplish successfully.
Most wild flowers are hard to grow and do not easily take to a new environment. Some can be moved successfully - by an experienced gardener. Some ~ and unfortunately many of those most desirable for the wildflower garden - very rarely survive the operation.
Unless one has skill and experience above what is usual, and a sufficient area of natural woodland, swamp or meadow ~ it is best to leave the wild things to flourish in their own places.
Nevertheless, it is possible to create a completely wild garden or mix native plants with cultivated varieties, even in a miniature city plot. But it is a delicate job that requires patience and all the love you have for gardening.
There are 6,000 to 8,000 kinds of wild flowers in the U. S., and your first and most important step is to find out all you can about those that grow in your area. Good places to aid in your research: public and university libraries, botanic gardens, arboretums, horticultural societies, local garden club headquarters.
With a good guide in hand, roam the nearby meadows and woods, taking careful notes on the flowers in

Burdock

also called

"gobo" and "great" burdock

is thecommonnameforArc-

tium minus or Arctium

lappa. It is an Old World

plant now widely distributed

and naturalized in this coun-

try. It has strong smelling

biennials resembling a

thistle but with only the flow-

er head and fruits prickly.

They have large leaves and

small purplish flowers fol-

lowed by bur-like fruit and

heads, armed with hooked

bristles which aid in spread-

ing them.

The minus species with its bur-like bristles sticks to clothing which is probably the main reason it is listed in garden encyclopedias as one of the fifty worst garden weeds. About the only way to eliminate this bothersome weed is to cut it off below the ground.

Although the lappa species is not as common in the U.S. as the minus, it is much grown and cherished in the Orient (especially Japan) for its large edible roots. These people believe that the roots, "gobo", have magical and medicinal qualities of the highest value.

Versatile Vinegar
One of the most versatile items that can be bought in the store is - a bottle of vinegar. In addition to its obvious uses, it can be used for cleaning, healing, deodorizing and for preserving.
Dishwashing can be made easier by adding vinegar to the dishwater. The acetic acid will help cut the grease. Getting rid of fish smells is simple. Just add some vinegar in the hot frypan after frying the fish.
Vinegar can be used to bring wilted vegetables to life. Wrapping cheese in a cloth dampened with vinegar will keep it moist.
Vinegar is also used to soak out clothing stains caused by coffee, tea, .alcohol, soft drinks, fruit juices, salt water and perspiration. It can be used in the removal of mildew in clothes or on furniture.
A teaspoon of vinegar in a cup of water is good for a sore throat. It eases the sting and itch of bites of insects and the pain of sunburn.

Morgan Horse

Less than one percent of the horses and ponies in Georgia are Morgans. This is more understandable when one remembers that these horses all descended from one remarkable horse - Justin Morgan.
The strange saga of this "sire of sires" has doubtless been enriched upon but none can deny that this was

truly a great horse. It is difficult to separate fact from legend but points presented here appear in several accounts.
About 1791, a teacher named Justin Morgan went to collect a debt owed him by a farmer. Part of the debt settlement included a blood bay colt of unknown heritage. This colt, grown to stallionhood, was to become the progenitor of a new breed of horses.
After the colt had been broken to harness, he was leased to a neighbor named Evans, who had contracted to clear timberland.
A team of mature horses were usually used for such heavy work but this half-grown colt proved equal to the task. On another occasion Evans

learned that there was a pine log near the local sawmill that none of the other horses could budge.
He confidently went to the tavern and struck a wager that his horse could move the log to the mill in three pulls. Upon arriving at the log, Evans declared the log too small for a fair contest and asked three men to ride it to the mill.
The Morgan breed sire did it in two pulls and earned a gallon of rum for his master. Later, the losers staked a fast horse against Evans' mount in a quarter-mile race. Despite the fact that the Morgan had just finished a full day's work, he finished several lengths in the lead and beat three other horses the same evening.
The reputation of the "Morgan Horse" was established. This remarkably versatile horse possessed another all important trait - the ability to transmit to his descendants the characteristics that made him famous.
The mark of Justin Morgan, the horse, was so distinctively borne by his get that the modern Morgan still bears great similarity to his statue on the University of Vermont campus.
Despite the fact that his life was cut short by the kick of another horse, this bay stallion established the only breed of horses that was named for a specific man.

Georgia consumer that the product he purchases is wholesome and not misrepresented".
A recently passed law makes it unlawful for retail stores to use the trademark Georgia in the marketing of beef or beef products unless the product has been graded by the U. S. Department of Agriculture, received a grade of good or better and did originate in the state of Georgia.
According to Ed Pope of Washington, Georgia, President of the Georgia Cattleman's Association, "Beef produced in Georgia is of the highest quality and should be accorded a place of prominence on the consumers table. We feel that the consumer has a right to know what he is buying and that the product is everything it is represented to be."
Consumers having comments or complaints should contact the Georgia Cattleman's Association, Perry, 31069 or the Georgia Agriculture Department, Division of Consumer Protection, Capitol Square, Atlanta, 30334.

Wild Flowers

their natural habitat. The closer that you can ap-
proximate the environment that a flower enjoys in the wild, the greater your chances of success.
Before you transplant any wild flowers, know the local law. It is illegal in many states to pick or dig up certain native plants and shrubs.
One way to acquire many native plants is to pick up the seeds in forest or meadow about a month after the flowers bloom and then plant them in a flat for later transplanting.
Veteran campaigners for the preservation of our native wild flowers recommend placing each kind with stem and sometimes basal leaves in an envelope or transparent bag with a notation of the name, date and place collected.
You also can buy wild flower seeds, plants and bulbs from a number of companies around the country that specialize in them.
The plants have been propagated from seed, by division or by cutting in specially prepared beds.
