The House And
Agriculture
The shift of the rural population to the urban areas during the last decade has been tremendous, leaving only about 5 I/ 2% of the people on the farm producing food and fiber for the rest of the nation.
This fewer people must do an efficient, effective job of production and processing in order that the consuming public might be fed and clothed.
To protect this small group from the masses and to protect the masses from c o n taminated foods, whether the contamination be at the processing or production level, requires a lot of research, a lot of legislation,
and a lot of trained inspectors to provide an effective job in these fields.
The all-important Agriculture Committee of the House is where we provide means and ways to effectively do the job of aiding the farmer and at the same time protect

the consuming public. Legislation, research programs and
inspection programs must be instigated by law each year to cope with the changing situations that exist in this mad world in which we live.
To enact legislation and to provide these services, the Agriculture Committee of the House and Senate is made up of people from all walks of life. Not only do we have bona fide dirt farmers on the Committee, we have lawyers, petroleum dealers, and other related industrial people serving to provide the laws to protect the people at all levels.
Legislation to repeal antiquated laws, to provide new consumer protection, or to provide the farmer with new laws under which he can fare better at the market place, is a continuing process.
Therefore, the Agriculture Committees of the House and Senate are two of the most important Committees we have in the General Assembly.
Most all agricultural legislation either originates with the farmer or the consumer or those who deal in agricultural commodities in between. The primary purpose is to provide laws to protect all these people and to repeal outdated laws that have become outdated because of new techniques and new scientific advancement.
An Agriculture Study Committee must be set up by the Agriculture Committee of the House to study the

These floating blocks aren't made of the freeway type of concrete but a mixture containing perlite ore as a lightweight aggregate instead of

Wax cut evaporation 100 percent for the area covered.
Wax is easier to handle than most of the other materials, including the concrete blocks. It is applied by squirting molten wax through a nozzle directly onto the water. The wax forms circles 6 to 8 inches in diam-

Spring Barrow Show
Under the American system of marketing you have your choice of a vast variety of wholesome, truthfully-labeled products to suit your tastes and needs. You also have a voice in determining the kind, style, and variety of products put on the market. This is true because every
losses is by sprinkling loose perlite directly from bags onto the surface of the water.
Perlite, like other loose materials, has a tendency to stack up on the lee side of a pond when wind velocities are brisk; however, it redistributes when the wind recedes.
The 20th annual Georgia Spring Barrow show, to be held at Americus, Feb. 16 and 17, will offer three times more premium money than
any of the previous events. Three new activities are also
planned: a show of breeding ani-
mals, a sale of fall boars and gilts, and a special awards banquet.

No appreciable reduction in the
size or number of fish was noted in ponds during these studies, and livestock did not appear to be bothered by any of the materials.
Along with saving water, the materials reduced weeds and algae in ponds by cutting off sunlight and inducing cooler temperatures.

Dear Editor:

I read a request in the BULLETIN for information on how to crack nuts to remove the meats whole.
If you notice, nuts have what looks like a seam all the way around. When you crack nuts, crack them half way between
the seams and you break them in half and get much nicer
meats. You can sometimes get the whole meat and most always half.

Trailing Abrutus, Mayflower, Ground Laurel, Winter Pink, common names for the genus Epigaea repens (from the Greek upon the ground)--so called because of its prostrate growth, is a woody herb of the Heath Family. It is perhaps our most fragrant wild flower. Look for them in April under the dead brown leaves of last year; especially under pines and in light sandy soil.
In New England they are called Mayflowers being sold in the streets of Boston every spring as "Plymouth Mayflowers." Whether they owe this name to the ship, which is responsible for so much, or to their blooming season might still be an open question if we did not have the authority of Whittier --attributing it to both causes.
The poet says: "The trailing arbutus or Mayflower grows abundantly in the vicinity of Plymouth, and was the first flower to greet the Pilgrims after their fearful winter." "God wills it, here our rest shall be, Our years of wandering o'er, For us the Mayflower of the sea Shall spread her sails no more; Yet, God be praised, the Pilgrim said, Who saw the blossoms peer, above the brown leaves, dry and dead, Behold our Mayflower here."
During a dark period in our nation's history these brave little flowers, struggling through the withered leaves, brought a message-of hope ana courage to the Quaker poet, making us feel that these flowers are peculiarly identified with our country's perilous moments: "The Pilgrims wild and wintry day, its shadow round us draws; The Mayflower of his stormy bay, Our freedom's struggling cause: But warmer suns erelong shall bring To life the frozen sod; And, through dead leaves of hope, shall spring, Afresh the flowers of God."
They are advertised in our BULLETIN every spring.

Ag-Committee
(Continued from page 1) effects of new insecticides, new herbicides and varied degrees of fertilization so that laws can be enacted to protect the consumer against the harmful effects that might come from long use of insecticides to control diseases and insects.
The Agriculture Committee provides legislation for checks and balances in the Department of Agriculture. Since the farm population is so small in relation to the urban population, new laws must be enacted from time to time to provide farmers with new scientific research and ways and means of mechanization to produce in a society that demands more and more from the new farmers that are left.
The job of legislating in the agricultural field is a never ending job and we must be constantly alert to the changes taking place in order that the consumer and the farmer might be protected from the field to the market place. The Commissioner of Agriculture and the Agriculture Department are the vehicles through which agricultural legislation is carried out.
Because of the low percentage of people on the farm, a tremendous fight has to be put up by the Agriculture Committee for necessary appropriations to finance these necessary activities of the Department of Agriculture and the various consumer protection programs.
The House Agriculture Committee has some very able men on the committee who serve also on the Appropriations Committee and these men are most important to agriculture and the consumer. We must remember that agriculture is still the biggest industry we have in Georgia!
Air Filter Helps
Poultry Disease
Respiratory diseases of poultry, caused by airborne micro-organisms, appear to be prevented by filtering incoming air and maintaining a higher air pressure inside the poultry houses than outside.
In 3 years, 10 laying flocks that were hatched, reared, and maintained in five filtered-air, positivepressure houses (FAPP) at the Southeast Poultry Research Laboratory, Athens, Ga., have shown no signs or serological evidence of avian respiratory diseases. Also, flocks maintained in conventional houses nearby are infected with Marek's disease, while those in the FAPP houses have apparently remained free of the disease.
In the new system, FAPP equipment filters and cools or heats incoming air. The ventilation blower runs constantly, forcing the filtered air into the practically airtight building, then out through the exhaust ports. The greater air pressure inside the house prevents unfiltered air from entering.
The system could be incorporated into the design of new poultry houses or added to existing houses. Once properly installed, it would not require specially trained poultry workers for operation. The system, however, has not yet been field-tested.
TIMBER VALUE The value of raw forest products harvested in Georgia in 1968 was estimated at $232 million, according to foresters with the University of Georgia Cooperative Extension Service.
