Agribusinesses

Serve Att Ga.
In this week's BULLETIN there is a notice concerning the state's first agri-business survey. Conducted by the University of Georgia's College of Agriculture Extension Service and Experiment Stations, and by the Agribusiness Council of Georgia, this is a significant undertaking of vital importance to the economy and welfare of this state.
It is estimated that the state agricultural income of more than one and a fourth billion dollars annually
is compounded I three or four times by I agribusinesses in ^ the state.
And yet, I am constantly concerned that too much of what is produced on our farms in Georgia is shipped to other states for processing and back to Georgia for consumption. One of my prime goals is to see more agribusinesses located in the rural areas of the state. This would result in (1) a boost in our overall economy, (2) a slackening of the rural migration to the cities, thereby alleviating many city problems and allowing those young and old who want to, the opportunity to remain and earn in our rural communities, and (3) lower prices to the consumer for items processed at home. The Georgia Agribusiness Council along with many other state and local organizations have been working towards this end. They have encouraged many plants to locate and expand in Georgia.
This survey and other efforts by these forward thinking organizations should be supported by all of us who are interested in the future prosperity of our state and of rural Georgia.
4th Farm Show
Coming Nov. 17
Commissioner of Agriculture Tommy Irvin will open the Fourth Annual Southern Farm Show November 17 at the Atlanta Civic Center.
This show will be an exhibition of everything that is modern and up-todate in Southern agriculture. It will embrace every new device for making farm chores easier and more efficient.
The show is sponsored by the PROGRESSIVE FARMER MAGAZINE. Show hours will run from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday, November 17; noon to 8 p.m. Wednesday, and from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Thursday, the closing day.
State Commissioners of Agriculture from other states are expected to be present for this event which promises to be the greatest of its kind ever presented in the Southeast.

This new state grain grading and testing facility at Gainesville and another new facility in Valdosta will greatly speed the processing of the state's grain reports, thereby better serving Georgia's multi-million dollar grain industry.______________

All grain reports are required to be completed within 24 hours after receipt. This previously has been a difficult task with only one facility in Atlanta. Now this
requirement can be accomplished easily.

Advisory Committee

From Gold To Gunboats
In its plan to prnter-t and show at least one imnnrtant hnilHina nr nhippt of all leading episodes in Georgia's history, the Commission has sites throughout the State. One of the most important and least known is the gold story as told in the restored courthouse in Dahlonega, the scene of the first gold rush.
This fine building erected in 1836 saw much of the drama of gold rush days. Exhibits in the building tell the story.

"The regulations have not been changed for about 10 years now," Irvin said, "and they need updating."
"Realizing that the market belongs to and is utilized by all Georgians, I am calling on members of the Farm Bureau, National Farmers Organization, County Agents, Vo-Ag teachers and other interested groups to help me formulate an advisory committee to assist in the revising of our regulations and to make other suggestions for improving the Atlanta Market."

I have some peacocks but I am unable to keep them because they create so much noise when they holler. Can they be devocalized by an operation and would this have to be done when they are small or after they have developed the stronger vocal cords? They are the best pest control fowl I know of since
they eat bugs and snails. P.C.W., Atlanta

College of Agriculture, is sending you some information on devocalizing your

peacocks which should be helpful. * * *

I have 3 large Chinese Chestnut trees growing in my front yard. They make fine shade trees, and are very prolific in producing a huge crop of nuts yearly. My problem: what good are they? Do you know of any way in which they can be used in cooking, or any other use to which they can be put? I'll be happy to send you a sample of them, if you so desire. One nut will be enough to last from now
'til Christmas as they are that hard. L.A.W., Colquitt

Shell them and eat raw. Roast in a preheated oven at 150 degrees for an hour and eat. Boil in salted water and eat. They can also be substituted for other nuts in various dishes such as green beans and casseroles.

(Editor's note: We have for several months been looking for any reference to the Cairo or Grady County tobacco shed mentioned in this article. We have had absolutely no luck in substantiating this statement. In fact, since there is no reference to it in several agricultural histories we have checked, I am inclined to agree with you that you were right and we were wrong. Thank you so much for calling this to our attention and, again, we apologize for the error.)

THE MARKET BULLETIN

The Seventh Annual Paintin' and Pumpkin Show attracted many visitors with exhibits ranging from produce to kitchen sinks. The Show, held at the Atlanta Farmers Market October 10th and nth, was sponsored jointly by the Forest Park Business and Professional Women's Club, the Atlanta Produce Dealers Association, and the South West Artists League.

Common Sage (Salvia officinalis) is a hardy perennial with oblong, woolly, gray-green leaves. The leaves are usually in pairs and both branches and leaves are covered with short white hairs.
This is a showy herb with fragrant purplish-blue or white flowers. Sage grows to 2 feet or more in height and has a tendency to sprawl. However, if planted close enough, it can be clipped to make a low hedge.
Sage is easily propagated from seeds, division of rootstocks, or by cuttings. Open, sunny positions, light, well-drained soil, and plenty of water in dry weather is required for this important bee plant.
This is one of our most familiar condiments enhancing the flavor of almost all meats and dressings. Not only are the leaves valued for seasoning, but also as a cure for common sore throats and colds when boiled as tea leaves. Oils from the whole plant are distilled to make delightful perfumed soaps.
The woody stalks of this perennial savory die back only a little in the cold winter months. To harvest, the leafy tops of the stalks are cut about 5 inches long before flowers appear and hung in open shade until dry.

I have enclosed 2 foreign objects I recently encountered while eating some crab rolls. Much as I hate to say it they do look like the legs of those famous Florida waterbugs or ugly roaches. Can you identify them?
Mrs. R.L.O., Warner Robins

Yes m'am, grass twigs. You can inform the store or restaurant where you

purchased the crab rolls but we doubt there is little that can be done now. The

twigs wouldn't have hurt you if swallowed by accident and were probably in

your food by accident.

***

I would like to know if you can help me get in touch with a dealer who buys uncut gems such as rubies, sapphires, etc.?
N.L., Cohutta The Mines, Mining, and Geology Department has mailed you a list that should help you sell your stones.
***

When is the best time of year to transplant fruit trees? V.F.I., Marietta

December and January. May we suggest that you contact your county agent, Mr. Ernest Wester, to help you*m*o*ve these trees.
Please identify the worm I mailed you. I found him in my garden on the tomato plants. This creature hangs on the underside of the stems and leaves and eats holes in the fruit. It is so perfectly camouflaged until it is almost impossible to see.
G.C., Rome

Thank you for the pretty pickled worm you sent us. You should have seen our mail girl when she opened the package and out rolled a bottle with a fully grown tomato horn worm in it. She hasn't opened a package since. You can control this creature with Sevin dust or spray.

State Plans First
Agribusiness Survey
Agribusinessmen of Georgia are this week receiving forms for the first survey conducted in this state to determine the impact of agribusiness on Georgia's economy.
Information obtained from this survey will be kept confidential and is expected to show the effects of new industry in different regions of the state. Everyone receiving a survey is encouraged to complete and return the form as soon as possible.
The survey is being conducted jointly by the Georgia Agricultural Experiment Station, the Cooperative Extension Service, and the Georgia Agribusiness Council. It is expected to open many doors in the analysis and development of economic growth of the agribusiness sector in Georgia.

trading post before that war and is considered by architects to be the finest frame building of its period south of the Potomac River. It has been restored and painted its original color - blue with red shutters.
In Watkinsville the Commission tore away several additions to a large stage coach stop and found encased inside a small very early tavern, now restored and furnished as a typical one.
Six miles east of Toccoa is Traveler's Rest, an early building with a long history. It is being restored to its prime, in the 1880's and the dramatic story of Jesse Walton, Revolutionary soldier and Indian fighter who was killed by Indians, and later owners will be told in the building. It is solidly constructed with a porch 90 feet long where generations of Jarretts entertained Georgia notables, Confederate soldiers, and travelers on the road between

Augusta and North Carolina. In Washington, another center of
early valor and culture, there is a plantation home, preserved and furnished by the Commission, and one of the finest Civil War collections in the South. It includes Jefferson Davis' camp chest which he left in Washington after meeting with some of his cabinet and officers as the war was ending, some original Ku Klux Klan regalia, muster rolls, armament and countless other items.
The latest project of the Commission is a small house in Waynesboro that will contain an interpretive museum memoralizing the great contribution of the people in original Burke County which includes several surrounding counties. The next project will be a plantation containing all of the equipment that made our plantation economy almost self-sufficient - the cotton gin, carpenter shop, blacksmith shop, planing mill, threshing machine, barn, wagons, carriages, and buildings.
