Taxing Peanuts
Is Bad Economy
A Constitutional Amendment of great economic importance . to Georgia and her economy will appear on your ballot in the coming General Election, Nov. 3.
For many years now there has been a tax on the books in Georgia on
edible peanuts held in storage. This tax has been imposed on a token basis only. Had it been rigidly imposed, it is very doubtful that Georgia's peanut industry ! could have
advanced to its current extent and value.
However, this year there has been some talk of imposing this tax in some counties. If this is allowed, it will mean a severe blow to Georgia's economy and possibly eliminate once and for all our world leadership in the production of peanuts.
The proposed constitutional amendment would eliminate this possibility by taking this old tax off the books. The amendment would exempt peanuts grown in this state and stored in licensed or bonded warehouses, regardless of ownership, from all ad valorem taxation.
All states bordering Georgia and every other major peanut producing state in the nation provide exemptions

in some form for peanut inventories. Should Georgia impose this tax it would put Georgia at a distinct disadvantage.
Georgia at present produces over 38% of the nation's total peanut production, more than any other state. This year Georgia has had a bumper crop producing 552,347 tons, over 95 thousand tons more than last year. All areas of peanut production have had substantial increases this season which will cause the already keen competition between the production areas to become even tighter.
Due to the highly competitive market and availability in other states, such a tax-cost could not be passed on to end-users. There is not an end-user in the United States who would pay I/ 4 per pound more for peanuts just because they were grown in Georgia. Low market margins are such that this additional tax cost would be impossible to absorb by Georgia shellers.
Peanut products manufacturing firms in Georgia could not store their inventories subject to taxation when they could move across state lines for tax-free storage. Georgia communities would lose their volume business and income source.

At Darien on the site of Fort King George, a blockhouse which was erected prior to the colony of Georgia for protection of South Carolina, the Commission has erected a museum to explain the several important eras of this one site - a Spanish mission, the old fort, and sawmilling which was carried on for 200 years here.

The top Jayer should be soil to prevent the leaves from blowing away. It should have a slight depression in the center of the bin or pile to channel rainfall or water from your garden hose down into the pile.
Composting is not difficult and it can contribute to your success as a gardener. Under no circumstances should we burn the leaves because of air pollution, danger of fire, and in some areas you will be violating local laws or ordinances. SCALLOPED OYSTERS l quart oysters l/ 2 stick butter or margarine l/ 4 cup celery, chopped fine l medium onion, chopped fine 1 clove garlic, grated 2 cups toasted bread crumbs 1 pint milk salt and pepper to taste Grated American cheese (enough to cover dish)
Cook onion, garlic, and celery in butter. In baking dish, put a layer of bread crumbs, layer of onions, celery, garlic, and oysters until baking dish is full. Pour milk over and cook until juice from oysters and milk has almost evaporated. Remove from heat, and add grated cheese. Serve hot.

Halloween is not complete without a pumpkin decoration. Whether you choose the old-fashioned jack-o-lantern or new imaginative tricks. Halloween lacks some of it's famous "spook" without the familiar snaggle-toothed
pumpkin on this trick or treat night.

Nature lovers, claiming that certain herbs have a magical effect, will always lead you to a patch of tangled greenbrier and begin gathering the tender young shoots that terminate the stout vines. They make a salad well worth eating and must be perfectly harmless as people that have eaten large quantities of this for long periods of time have had no ill effects. These tender shoots of the vine are also delicious as a cooked vegetable, bound in serving-size bundles and boiled or steamed, as one does asparagus.
One man seventy-three years old, a member of a nature club on a walk, mentioned that he had been up until 3 A. M. the night before teaching some young people Russian dancing. Despite the late hours and strenuous exercise of the night before, he was as fresh and chipper as anyone in the group and could outwalk, outclimb, and outgather any of the young people in the
group. When asked about the secret
of his perpetual youth, he said that it was due to eating certain wild foods, fresh and green, and said that he believed he could stay young and vigorous until he was a hundred years old if only he could get blaspheme-vine shoots the year round.

Although jack-o-lanterns are the most popular use of pumpkins at Halloween, we have many other ideas for you to try this year. Why not make a Pumpkin Man by using four pumpkins of increasing size cutting out the eyes, nose, mouth, and teeth, making buttons out of black felt or other type of material. For an extra accessory tie a scarf around the Pumpkin Man's neck.
You may use the pumpkin as a container for fruit or other goodies for your guests Halloween night. Just cut the top off, scoop out the meringue and allow to dry. A small pumpkin may be used as a candle holder. Have you thought of making a witch by draping a small round table with a black cloth and sitting a pumpkin on top. You can put a hat on her head and a broom in her hand and presto ~ a witch.
With proper care, the pumpkins you do not use will keep for several months. Store only well-matured fruits that are not damaged and do not attract insects. Pumpkins keep better if they are cured for ten days at 80 to 85 degrees Fahrenheit. Curing hardens the rind and heals the surface cuts.
After curing pumpkins, store in a dry place at 55 degrees to 60 degrees Fahrenheit. When stored at 50 degrees or below, pumpkins are subject to damage by chilling. At temperatures above 60 degrees, they gradually lose moisture and become stringy. Do not store pumpkins in outdoor cellars or pits.
Make this Halloween a special one for you and all the witches and goblins who knock on your door. After Halloween enjoy pumpkin treats all winter long.

Horses of Georgia
Welsh Pony
With seven and one-half thousand head, the Welsh Pony comprises slightly over five percent of the horses and ponies in the state. This increasingly popular breed has added a new dimension to many a Georgia child's life.
The true origin of the breed is not known, but these hardy ponies wandered the rough terrain of the Welsh mountains for generations. They proved themselves very durable in the coal mines of Wales. Later, selective breeding was practiced to develop a pony of the saddle type for

use as a child's mount. The Welsh Pony was imported to the United States in 1884. Its popularity grew gradually, and the Welsh Pony Society of America was established in 1906.
Weighing usually under five hundred pounds, the more desirable Welsh ponies stand about twelve hands and are considered an ideal intermediate youth mount.

Now you know we can't do that. The State Revenue Department "advised" us not to publish recipes for alcoholic beverages. It seems some people are inclined to make a certain product, illegally, for public sale. Some of the "old timers" in your neighborhood should be able to help you. We feel sure you are planning to use this for medicinal purposes.
I would like to get information from someone concerning the Georgia poultry industry. I became interested in poultry as a 4-H club member and since that was 20 years ago, I know there have been many changes since then. I would like to start an operation on a small scale and grow with the market. The county agent at that time told me that the profit could average around 10* per dozen eggs and 10$ per pound for broilers. However, broilers were selling for 18 to 20 cents per pound then and I don't recall egg prices. I need information on flock size and other factors.

You're right, the market has changed - drastically. May we suggest that you sit down with your county agent and discuss your plans. He needs such information as how much you are able to invest, expected profit, and if this is to be a full-time occupation or part time. He will be able to advise you on the proper persons to contact. Hope you aren't shocked by price changes. Inflation, you know.

Taxing Peanuts

posed, the counties will not lose any revenue they are now receiving. If imposed, the loss to Georgia's economy would be far greater than the revenue received from the tax.
