The Wealth Under
Georgia's Earth
Activities of the Georgia Department of Mines, Mining and Geology are designed to: expand production and income of the mineral industry of the state; provide for proper utilization of petroleum and mineral resources to obtain maximum benefits for the citizens of the state; insure the maintenance of an adequate supply of water to the citizens of the state; and provide topographic information concerning all areas of the state.
A recent highlight of progress in operations of the Department of
Mines, Mining and Geology has been the acquisition of a diamond drill rig capable of drilling to a depth of 4,000 feet in hard rock. With this new drill the first deep ex-
ploration drilling on many economic metals will be done. Minerals to be sought include copper, nickel, chromium, zinc, lead, and tungsten.
The Department of Mines is heavily involved in the development of the minerals of the coastal regions. The heavy minerals industry,

petroleum, sands and gravels, kaolin, and phosphate have a tremendous potential in the coastal areas of Georgia.
Oceanography and the development of the coastal zone is becoming increasingly important, and the department is presently involved in the development of a section of oceanography and coastal studies, which includes urban geology, ecology of the mining and mineral industry, and the production of economic minerals.
The department has recently produced a large scale Mineral Resource Map that precisely locates all known mineral prospects and deposits throughout the state.
Another important development has been designated by the Governor as the coordinating agency to develop mine health and safety standards.
Georgia's mining industry is already large and is growing at a rapid pace. At the present time, mining and the processing of mineral products contribute more than $260 million annually to the economy of the State.
There are more than 300 mining operations in the state, located in all regions of Georgia and in more than 100 counties. More than 10,000 Georgians earn their livelihood either directly or indirectly through the mining industry.
Georgia is the fifth largest industrial mineral producer in the United States and leads all states in the mining of kaolin, granite, and

Bracken Fern Can Poison Animals
In late summer or fall or during dry seasons Bracken Fern or Brake Fern (Pteridium aquilinum) may cause poisoning of cattle and horses in Georgia.
This is our only species of fern that is especially dangerous to livestock. As with many of our poisonous plants, it is usually eaten only when the animals are lacking proper forage.
Bracken Fern is easily identified by the leaves which are 10 to 40 inches tall, triangular in shape and usually divided into 3 main parts, each of which consists of many small segments. It typically grows on poor, dry, sandy soils of woods, roadsides, and hillsides.
It is most abundant in the open pine woods of south Georgia but is found in every county in the state. It is poisonous both in the fresh condition or when dried in hay.
The enzyme thiaminase found in the Bracken Fern causes thiamine deficiency in horses.
The symptoms in horses include unsteady gait, nervousness, timidity, congestion of visible mucous membranes, constipation, staggering and dilated pupils.
In cattle, the Bracken Fern causes internal bleeding, high fever, difficult breathing and salivation.
If poisoning is suspected, a veterinarian should be contacted. -Dr. Samuel B. Jones, Jr. Department of Botany, The University of Georgia.
A Bird, Flower, Tree,
Symbols of Our State
When Georgia was founded in 1733, no state symbols existed. As the state grew and its people developed a culture of their own, symbols began to be desired to designate a separate

unity among the states. One of the first state symbols
chosen by Georgia was the Cherokee
Rose as the state flower. Adopted as the state flower by the Georgia Federation of Women's Clubs and confirmed by the State Legislature in 1916, it grows in all sections of the state.
Although the Cherokee Rose was originally thought to be indigenous to southern soil, it is now believed that the rose was introduced into Georgia directly from China or from China by way of England in the 18th Century.
The name is derived from the Cherokee Indians who widely distributed the plants. The rose blooms in early spring but favorable conditions will produce a second flowering in the fall of the year. The rose is waxy white in color with a large golden center. Because of its hardy nature, it is used extensively for hedge purposes throughout the South.
The next symbol of the state to be chosen was the Brown Thrasher as the state bird by official proclamation of Gov. Eugene Talmadge in 1935. The Thrasher is common in the eastern United States ranging north to Canada and west to the Rockies.
This migratory bird is almost a foot long and one of the finest songsters native to America. It has a rich brown color with a white stripe on its wings and brown feathers accenting the creamy white breast.
the Thrasher is related to the mockingbird and a true friend of the farmer because of the grasshoppers, caterpillars, and worms which it destroys.
Another symbol which is closely related to our early history in the Georgia state tree. An act of Congress in 1937 adopted the live oak as an official symbol of the state. The live oak flourishes along the Coastal plains and is considered native to Georgia.
The Daughters of the American Revolution suggested the live oak for Georgia's tree because of its significance and frequent reference in history, particularly with the lives of many famous Georgians such as General James Oglethorpe, John Wesley and Sidney Lanier.
Fall Horse Show Issue
A Georgia horse, Ace's Sensation of Sugarloaf Farms in Atlanta, has captured the title of World's Grand Champion Tennessee Walking Horse. More than 25,000 spectators cheered as Ace and his trainer, Wink Groover, a world champion in training, received the trophy in Shelbyville, Tenn., at the National Celebration Horse Show. Ace's Sensation, owned by Mr. and Mrs. R. Randall Rollins, has been winning championship titles since he was a two year old.

Dear Editor: In the September 9, 1970, issue of the MARKET BULLETIN under "Straight Line", someone had prickly pear cactus that they couldn't get rid of. I've been hunting this for years as it does not grow around here. I'd like to buy some, and would also like to know if it is winter hardy or would one have to keep it inside?
.(Editor's note: Prickly pear cactus is considered tropical and therefore would not be winter-hardy. It can, however, be enjoyed during the winter if brought inside.)
I have really got beautiful plants and seeds from the BULLETIN and enjoy it very much.

The Papaw, also known as custard-apple by some, belongs to a small genus of North American shrubs and trees. The Papaw, Asimina triloba, is the only tree of its family cultivated for its fine foliage, colorful flowers, and, to some, desirable fruit.
The Papaw tree does not usually exceed 25 feet in height and has oblong shaped leaves 8 to 12 inches in length. The flowers, green at first and later changing to purplish red with a yellow center, appear in early spring.
The Papaw fruit, appearing in fall, is fleshy and resembles an old potato in color and shape. The fruit is 2 to 6 inches in length, dark brown when ripe, and has yellow flesh surrounding large flat seeds. It is a highly aromatic with a banana flavor. Some of us, however, do not relish the flavor while others find the large seed a disadvantage.
The tree grows in good rich soil, usually in rich wooded areas, and prefers little sun. It is transplanted with considerable difficulty and grows best from seeds sown in the fall.
This handsome tree is well worth a place in your garden, not only for its bright flowers but its fruit as well.

Please tell me how to store Chinese Chestnuts. Mrs. J.L.B., Donalsonville
Chinese Chestnuts should be picked up from the ground as soon as they have fallen as they become hard and bony if left on the ground. For short storage, place the nuts in a lard can and punch a hole about the size of a 10 penny nail in the top of the can. For longer storage, the nuts must be kept cool. Place the unshelled nuts in a glass jar with the lid screwed on loosely in the refrigerator. However, freezing is the most satisfactory method for keeping chestnuts. Place the shelled nuts in a preheated oven at 150 degrees for about an hour or until they have a rubbery and crisp texture. The bite test may help in this. After the nuts have cooled, place in tight fitting containers in the freezer. Uncooked shelled nuts and boiled nuts may also be placed in air tight containers in the freezer for longer periods of storage.

Georgia Mines
. (Continued from page 1) marble. This state is second among all in the nation in the mining of fuller's earth, rare earth concentrates, and some forms of mica. Twenty-three different commercial products are mined in Georgia.
As great as is the present status of the mining industry in the state, even more impressive is the projected growth of the industry within the next few years. It is estimated that by 1976 - only six years hence -- the dollar value production of Georgia's mining industry will grow to between $300 million and $500 million yearly. In 1969, mining production value in the state increased by 16 percent over the previous year.
