FARMERS & CONSUMERS
Georgia Department of Agriculture Tommy Irvin, Commissioner

VGLUMK

Wednesday. August 19.

NUMBER 34

Tommy Irvin
Tobacco Committee
Reduces Buyers
The marketing procedure for tobacco is, at best a complicated system. When this system is further complicated by a bumper crop, too few buyers and not enough selling time, the results are costly and inconvenient to Georgia tobacco farmers.
Since before this season began, I have been meeting and working with
the 35 man industry-wide tobacco committee, which sets the selling time and number of buyers on each
market, trying to secure our farmers sufficient selling time to get the best possible price for their tobacco - in other words to have sufficient time for an orderly marketing
season and ample time to sell the tobacco crop without rushing.
I am extremely disappointed that after all of this preliminary work, the 35 man industry-wide flue cured tobacco marketing committee has allowed only eight sets of buyers on our markets this week and next (the fifth and sixth week of sales.)
Last year there were 90 sets of buyers operating at one time in Virginia and Carolina. This year, even if my request for 16 sets of buyers had been granted, there would have been only 83 sets of buyers on all markets on the entire tobacco belt.
In my opinion this committee is showing partiality to the Carolina and Virginia markets in allowing more buyers and more selling time in these states than they do in Georgia.
We had also asked for an hour additional selling time each day for the fourth week of sales but were granted one half hour only.
Georgia warehousemen are to be commended for their efforts to make the best of this situation. They have established a rotation system wherein over a period of time every market will have buyers for extended sales periods when the number of buyers is reduced.
In addition, the warehousemen have been cooperative in their efforts to secure more buying time and buyers for the Georgia belt.
On the brighter side, this year's crop of tobacco has been of the finest quality in recent years. This has been reflected in the high average price farmers are receiving for their tobacco.
Household Hint
An easy way to remove the core from a head of lettuce is to hold the lettuce head in hand and hit core against the wall. The core pops out, and you can easily make some lettuce leaves for your salad.

Ag Dept. Officials Being Impersonated
The Department of Agriculture has received reports that one or more men in the North Georgia area have been posing as officials of the department and trying to collect fees and fines from farmers.
This is to advise that all Department of Agriculture officials carry proper identification at all times and that fines are not collected on the farm and are never imposed without due process of law.
If you have any knowledge of this type of impersonation please report it to Commissioner of Agriculture Tommy Irvin, Agriculture Building, Capitol Square, Atlanta 30334.
Profit In Grapes
There's potential profit in growing muscadine grapes.
C. D. Spivey, horticulturist with the University of Georgia Cooperative Extension Service, says a commercial grower who applies recommended practices can produce four to six tons of fruit per acre once his vineyard is in full production.
Spivey adds that the present contract price of grapes is $125 per ton. A grower who produces four to six tons per acre can expect a gross return of $500 to $750 per acre. Returns from roadside market sales go much higher.
Commissioner of Agriculture Tommy Irvin congratulates Johnny Whitlock, Grand Champion Award winner at the Fifth Annual Northeast Georgia Junior Market Hog Show and Sale held in Athens recently. Sponsored by the Banks County F.F.A., Johnny won with a 230 pound Duroc Barrow. Kim Cook of Oglethorpe County was first place winner in the showmanship contest and Harrell Jordan of Banks won reserve champion.

Management Helps

Georgia Forests Grow

Georgia is well endowed with forest land, leading the nation in privately-

owned forest area. Its forests not only support industry, which contributes

approximately 1.3 billion dollars annually to the state's economy, but provides

abundant wildlife, recreation, good soil and water conditions and aesthetic

values.

To help the woodland owner

obtain his management objectives,

the Forestry Commission

management program, under the

leadership of W. H. McComb,

prepares and furnishes the individual

landowner a detailed management

plan. This includes an aerial photo of

his tract and a scheduled procedure

for him to follow. The plan enables

him to manage his forest on a

business-like basis.

The encroachment of poor quality

or weed trees prevents the state's

forests from reaching their fullest

potential. There are more than 24

million acres in this state of privately

owned forests. To meet this problem,

the Forestry Commission provides a

Forester and landowner check soil service to landowners of spraying

bank planting.

these areas with the most modern

tractor mounted mist blowers. This

service, as well as timber marking, is

done on a contract basis.

The Forestry Commission

provides protection on Georgia's 25

million forest acres from insects and

diseases through surveys utilizing

aircraft and a specially designed

camera.

Utilization specialists work with

forest industry or their manufac-

turing problems. This includes

analytical studies and recom-

mendations to help improve their

operations, and make them more

economical.

Through a metro forestry

program, urbanites are receiving

increased services. The requests

When are "dog days"? S.L., Greensboro
According to Grier's Almanac, 1970, "dog days" begin July 28th and end September 5th. The ancients gave this name to the hottest season of the year, consisting of 40 days, when the sun rose about the same time as the Dog Star, Sirius. It was believed that dogs more frequently had the disease of rabies at this time.
There is an old man living next door to me who has a hog pen next to my yard. He refuses to move his animals and the odor is terrible. I am a widow and cannot do anything about it myself.
Mrs. B.C., Thomaston
Why not bake him one of those good old-fashioned pound cakes, take it to him, and talk it over with him. He might be tired of hogs for company. Remember the adage, "kissing wears out, cooking don't".
*** Will tomatoes hurt calves? One of our calves had rather eat tomatoes than feed.
Mrs. D.H., Rome
They won't as long as they don't have an insecticide or pesticide on them. *** (Continued on page 8)

Dear Editor: I would like to know how to make hot pot holders made on a little gadget made of a round piece of wood with a hole in the middle and 4 nails on top. It was very popular in Georgia about 50 years ago. I am an old lady now but want to teach my little great granddaughter. I still have the little gadget but can not remember how to make the hot pot holders.

The gourds may be used as mugs, baskets, or as a flower planter for live or artificial flowers. When using as a planter for live flowers, plant the flowers in a glass dish and insert the dish in the hole of the gourd. This will keep the gourd dry and free of decay.
Gourds may also be used as individual containers for nuts or candy, as a scoop, or as a novelty holder on your desk. You might make a toy animal for your children or let them use a gourd as a buoy on their fish line. You could

We asked a home economist who advised us that coarse salt, also called dairy salt, is coarser than table salt or ice cream salt. Although table salt may be used in making cucumber pickles, coarse salt is thought by some people to produce a tastier pickle. Iodized salt is not recommended in making pickles.

involve homeowners wanting shade tree information relating to insects and disease, pruning, fertilization, damages caused by mechanical equipment, earth fills and others. A forest education program for tree owners, youth groups, civic organizations, garden and women's clubs, on all phases of forest conservation, is provided.
The forestry phase of the following agencies' programs are serviced by the Forestry Com-

mission. They are ASCS, ACP, Farmer's Home Administration,
Small Watershed, Resource Conservation and Development, Naval Stores Conservation, and the Georgia Crop Improvement Association's Certified Pine Seed Program. The Soil Conservation Districts are assisted with their forestry plans and programs.
The construction of new and expansion of established wood-using industries in Georgia makes the job of encouraging use of good forest management practices an imperative responsibility of the Georgia Forestry Commission.
