Protection
Starts With You
Today people in Georgia and the nation enjoy protection or a guarantee from some agency or association on almost every item purchased.
This is fine in that we have virtually eliminated many diseases caused by improper processing of
foods, beverages and drugs. It has also resulted in higher quality merchandise being offered for sale; "culls" have all but disappeared from the market place.
These protection agencies have contributed to the high standard of living we all enjoy today. But there is one area of caution! We must not grow complacent. When this happens, it creates a breeding ground for fraud and misrepresentation.
Our grandfathers lived by the motto "Buyer Beware" when spending any of their hard earned money. In 1970, we can relax a little and feel safe in our purchases as long as we follow a few rules of caution.
The most important of these is reading. In the grocery reading the label on meats can assure you that they have been inspected by the state or federal government. Canned goods labels should also be read for ingredients if there are allergies in your family.
When purchasing seed, a quick look at the tag can tell you exactly what you are buying and the rate of germination you can expect.
If a pest control operator calls on you, a good look at his state license and number may save you hundreds of dollars.
When purchasing any major appliance or service, be sure you read the small as well as large print on the contract or guarantee.
Generally speaking, services, mail order purchases and other "sightunseen" expenditures should not be paid for until the order is completed and you are satisfied. (There are of course some exceptions to this rule where reputable, known companies are involved.)
We in the Department of Agriculture, and I know this is true of other state and federal offices, are doing everything possible to protect the consumers of Georgia. Only you can help us to serve you better by: 1. Reading the labels, tags, licenses, and contracts, on any item you purchase, and 2. Reporting immediately to this department any irregularities in your purchases.

The manager gets fresh eggs daily and puts 20 to the carton. These eggs are large, usually two yolk. His store is not air con ditioned and he does not refrigerate his eggs. I have found these eggs to be very good. Should eggs be refrigerated and are double-yolk eggs better?

painted a coltsfoot leaf on the door so that those that could not read would know that herbal medicine was sold there. It has been called "nature's best herb for the lungs and her most eminent thoracia."

Our Egg section tells us that cartoned eggs are not more than 24 hours old before being placed in grocery store. The date stamped on the carton is the date the eggs are placed in the carton. Eggs are taken out of stores after 8 to 10 days. This is the store manager's responsibility and if you should find eggs with an old date on the carton, the store manager should be notified at once. The double-yolk eggs sold by the neighborhood store you referred to are considered abnormal and given a "B" classification. All double-yolk eggs are considered abnormal. Eggs should be refrigerated at all times. We have asked an egg inspector to visit you personally to talk with you about eggs and government regulations on eggs.
I would like some information on truckers who would like to buy water melons that will be ready on June 20th. I have 4 acres of Cobb Jim and Black Diamond which at present count should yield about 60,000. I also have 7 acres of Jubilee melons which will be ready about the same time. Should I sell by volume or pound? How do the truckers pay when they get the melons?

All ancient physicians praised its healing powers, being considered one of the safest and best ways of treating a cough-partly because the flavor is so palatable it was no trouble at all to get children as well as adults to take the remedy.
Botanically the plant is an oddity-being one of the first flowers to appear in spring. It has perennial spreading white roots from which come little yellow flowers on stalks resembling tiny asparagus shoots.
The large leaves give the name coltsfoot because the outline resembles the track of a young horse.
Europeans used to smoke dried coltsfoot leaves like tobacco for stubborn coughs, asthma or bronchitis.
Pliny, the great GrecoRoman naturalist of the 1st. century, directed that one build a tiny fire of cypress charcoal, drop dried and crumbled coltsfoot leaves on them and inhale the smoke through a hollow reed.

New Method
To Analyze
Plant Nutrients
For years Georgia farmers have based their evaluation of a plant's nutrient content on its outward appearance and on soil tests. Now, thanks to a new technique, they can determine specific amounts of nutrients in their growing crops.
The new technique is plant analysis, now being done by the Cooperative Extension Service in a new laboratory on the University of Georgia campus.
Mailing kits, which are available at county Extension agents' offices, must be used in submitting plant tissue to the laboratory. Jones explained that a kit includes a mailing envelope, a questionnaire and sampling instructions.
The collected sample, along with a $3 check or money order made payable to the University of Georgia, should be returned to the county agent who will forward the sample to the laboratory.
FISHING FOR DOLLARS
A recent survey showed that the value of commercially-produced earthworms exceeds over $1 million annually in Georgia.
Almost every county has some beds in production, but counties in the southwest and northeast parts of the state reported most of the commercial enterprises.
If the industry continues to develop as rapidly in the future as it has in the past, perhaps we will soon have a hybrid worm that will be able to grab and hold onto that fish for you.
